The ultimate luxury is still having money and freedom from others opinions, just buying a wardrobe that makes you feel amazing, no matter what it costs you.

I agree that quiet luxury is more about quality, timeless, elegance.
But thats why I think you can get good quality leather (non branded) bag or a nice linen dress (non designer)- and have that quiet luxury look. So you don’t have to spend the excess money. Its about showing you admire quality and elegance. Let people just wonder where you got your items from.

I have to say that your revelation about the luxury lifestyle being not for you is so refreshing. I have pretty much stopped watching You Tube channels such as Tamara , Victoria, Lydia etc etc etc. I have started to view their excess as vulgar and ostentatious . I've really heard enough about the designers and the MUST HAVES. I also like watching a home grown Aussie too, keeping it real!

I think the problem I have is that everyone just wants to look the same. To me, style is supposed to communicate who you are as a person (not just if you have money or not). When everyone wears logo, it’s boring cuz like who are you? When everyone is trying to wear “quiet luxury” it’s also boring AF! Wish we were having more conversation around all the different styles and people were more interested in matching the outside to their inside instead of just everyone looking the same. Yawnfest

Love the comment, I do agree, people look alike with no personality. I also agree with trends where kids get to explore styles. Everything in moderation. I’m from the Caribbean and wear linen and cotton. I was raised by my grandmother who said “dress properly so people will respect you.” Your style is a statement where it’s a time in your life or season or mood. So wear what you want to wear. Look like a fool or like a Prada bag who cares.

What people need to start asking themselves is …If I was in permanent lockdown would I still buy this? If no one ever saw me in this would I still buy this? If the answer is no then you probably shouldn’t buy it at all people really need to be buying these things for themselves no matter what it is. I’m sure billionaires don’t think about the cost of something they just buy so it could be $10 or $10,000 and they don’t worry about it cause they don’t need to.They truly just buy what they like with no cost worry probably never even look at the price.

People always view rich people as another species, but they are still human. So maybe the price tag wouldn't matter to them, but one thing they do care is the feeling of getting "ripped off", and similarly if there's a deal, they will still be attracted even though it doesn't matter financial wise with or without discount. Ultimately, people are either buying to address a need or feel good. They will stop buying if the purchase doesn't make them "feel good".

Yes, this!!! There are of course some wealthy people who are all about showing it off but then again, some of the wealthiest people I've known in my life (my mother even comes from an extremely wealthy family on her father's side and her father despite living in a mansion and owning tons of land- keep in mind this is Latin America and not North America- LOVES shopping at Goodwill and Salvation army😂) anyway, some of the wealthiest people I've met will buy bags from Chanel and Hermes... And then also in their purse collection they will have bags from Target. They just buy what they like because they can and whether it's inexpensive or quite costly they don't have to worry about the price.

Being close to 50, I’ve seen every trend rise and fall a few times as the fashion pendulum swings, and they usually come back with different names and values attached to them. This whole “quiet luxury” style was at different times labelled “dated, traditional, classic, minimalistic, professional, neutral, elegant, passé, mature, and so on. This time around, it’s being tied to both our desire for and rejection of rising über wealth and power. It is a more political iteration and therefore it seems to be more provoking. Clearly, quite fitting for the tempestuous times we live in. I feel that for some, it is a style that resonates with their nature, personality, and taste beyond what it represents for society. They ought to go at it with gusto and haters be damned… I’d say.

I really don't care if someone wants to dress quietly or loudly; but I think it's *bizarre* and *disgusting* that there's full-grown adults telling people that they must be poor if they buy loud logos or they must be a show-off or they must have used their rent money to buy loud monogram bags.
It's disturbing that this trend has given people permission to make assumptions about people's financial situations and what their purchases *say* about them. I can't wait for this trend to end so all of this judgment can go away!

I was bullied a lot in school so I decided if they weren’t going to like me, I’d give them a reason. So I spent money on things that were easily identifiable to separate myself from them. Didn’t make me happy… but I thought I was smart. I’ve since learned this isn’t healthy and who cares if they don’t like me!
Now I wouldn’t say I’m about quiet luxury. I’m just about wearing things I like and cloths I like (silk!).

I don’t think you can look rich, because not all rich people look the same… I think instead of people saying they want to look rich they should say sophisticated or elevated or elegant or classic or whatever they want to dress like. What you wear doesn’t tell the world if you have money, it’s kind like how you can’t buy class, you either have it or you don’t.

I don’t like logos at all. I think they look cheap even when they are from an obviously very expensive brand. I don’t worry about buying certain brands so much as the look, fabric and feel of the item. I buy natural materials, mostly neutrals, as that’s just what I personally prefer and many times they are secondhand. I do not have a lot of money, but sometimes I am assumed to. I had a comment made about me at my last job by a coworker about that I probably live in this neighborhood that is very expensive and elite and meanwhile I’m over here in the cheapest apartment I can find that isn’t in the hood 😂🤷‍♀️. I busted out laughing and corrected the person and then asked why in the world they would think that. He said because of how I dress. Go figure. I hadn’t heard of “quiet luxury” until recently, but guess that’s what this dude thought.

I like how honest you are. There are many people who wear luxury branded items to cover up their insecurities and to boost their low self esteem. It's OK if they are aware of it, but some people misunderstand that they are great just because they own luxury handbags.
For example, Amal Clooney is a successful international lawyer and her husband George Clooney has a net worth of 500 million dollars, but I have never seen Amal wear Chanel, Hermes, Dior, or Louis Vuitton bags, even though she can buy all the bags in the world. She is not even embarrassed to wear a Michael Kors bag. She proves that you can be an incredibly beautiful and talented woman inside and out without any luxury branded items.

Given this recession people probably gravitate towards quiet luxury as a survival mechanism. Crime has risen and people don’t feel safe wearing loud luxury and driving anything too flashy for fear of getting attacked or robbed. Especially in Europe and America. Much of the middle class has fallen off the grid after pandemic so the environment is changing. I see nowadays so many young people buying luxury but I don’t know how much money they make. It used to be more of a upper middle class type of thing. Now it seems basic and you buy whether you have the money or not.

The reason I lean into quiet luxury, it has the upside I can wear it to work; I don’t work in a particularly high-flying office, and I don’t want to step on toes bringing in my logo’d Lux, when no one else does designer.
I still have logo pieces I love, but a little bit of the bloom has come off that rose since 5/7 days of my week, I can’t reach for them 😭
And as for knockoff quiet luxury; cheap brands have been doing it for as long as there’s been designers, loud or quiet.
Here’s my favourite game. I go into Big W, Kmart, TkMaxx and play Name That Bag.
….. every single one has had multiple quiet luxury bag designs they’ve just straight out ripped off.

The most important issue you raised IMO is not about the difference of “quiet” vs. “logo” luxury, or even about fashion as a whole- it’s about the emotional/ physical pain you were trying to cover up by thinking that “luxury” items can cure it. The problem is not in our fashion choices, but making them as a cure for some problem in our life, by buying a fantasy that is different than our real world. It usually doesn’t work, you even said it was damaging to your well being. I am interested in what brought on this realization for you?

Okay, i am going to expose my age, but when I was young some of my elders would have described logo-wear as tasteless, vulgar or bourgeois. So yeah definitely classist. I do prefer not to wear logos and was probably influenced by that view to a degree but then I have never wanted or been able to invest in things that date. I could not afford to flaunt wealth i didnt have with logo-wear and faking it with knock offs is not for me. It was also just not my aesthetic. The thing I find most strange is why anyone needs to actively seek to look like the uber- wealthy or be part of a secret club. I would rather have wealth than exude it. But I dont so I just live my life and wear what makes me feel good. What others wear to make them feel good is their own business.

Quiet luxury is just another trend term and way to dress as if you belong. Rich people don’t care THAT much on how they look. They’re mostly into less superficial stuff to maintain and grow their money.
Plus, rich people don’t want to look rich, they are. They don’t care. And they don’t want to jeopardise their wealth by flaunting it.
The truly rich and successful don’t talk about this stuff. They rather do things for themselves and their business. It’s so crazy people want to look rich, because you can’t look rich. You can just be or not be rich and feel or not feel rich.

I think the ultimate luxury is finding good quality investment pieces and feeling put together when you use them and not having your wardrobe overflowing with useless items.
A lot of people act like buying something with good fabrics means spending an obscene amount and while it is difficult to find a lot for affordable prices, you can still choose to get a couple of nice shirts made of 100% natural fibers for 80 dollars or something.

My thought process now is "if this had no label, is it worth the price?". I'm sure I've commented before about how 90% (honestly probably more like 98%) of my wardrobe is opshopped/secondhand. I've got caught up in the labels before, either outside logos or the tag on the inside; especially as the items I buy are heavily discounted from retail price. I noticed many times the quality was no different, or worse, than cheaper brands. I'm getting to a healthy midpoint of "I'm putting more money towards a QUALITY piece" and "The cheaper/non branded item is just as good". Expensive to me is definitely not expensive to others- I couldn't afford (or justify) spending $100+ on a tshirt (tbh I cringe at $50 lol); opshopping/ebay/depop etc has allowed me to have these items in my wardrobe. My $300 jeans (that I literally paid $4 for) are definitely better than my ones from cotton on. But would I walk instore and pay $300 for them again? No.

However I just wanted to add that it does not have to be black or white: I wear mostly timeless classic pieces and my color palette is mostly neutral, but I do love a little logo sprinkled in there as well (eg. a LV monogram bag, a litte chanel CC or Hermès H detail). Knockoff quiet luxury are brands that advertise a lifestyle like J.Crew, Abercrombie, Banana Republic. However, they’re often polyester instead of silk, cotton blend instead of linen, plated gold instead of gold, assembled in skilled labor factories in poor countries instead of by artisans.

I’m new to your channel but I’ve binged the last like 10 months of your videos and I’d just like to say I love your channel. Personally I’ve never made enough money nor do I live in a place (western Colorado) where luxury brands would be appropriate. It’s strange that here we are so casual and granola that “Patagonia” is like the “brand” that screams oh she’s got money lol, luxury houses are just so out of place here and bizarre that if I see someone with them I know they’re from out of town and visiting their home in Aspen or Veil. Lol. All that to say I still personally love timeless classic French style. And quiet luxury is definitely what influences me how I style myself. I’m someone who goes to thrift stores and antique stores with my Pinterest board open and I look at older clothes with good textiles. The amount of “old money” vibes you can find at the thrift store is awesome, if you know how to style it and take care of your over all appearance you can look very classic and timeless with thrifted clothes. Not to mention it gives you an over all mystery.

Personally, I think the concept of quiet luxury is ridiculous unless you are genuinely a millionaire mogul who needs to keep their wealth under wraps in fear of being robbed or kidnapped. Outside of that, there’s no real reason why anyone needs to indulge in the trend unless they genuinely like the clothing or brand for reasons outside of it being “quiet and luxurious”.
Rich people wear logos and wearing a monograms Gucci shirt isn’t going to take away from that. You’ll find rich people from African and Asian nations tend to be more ostentatious about their wealth, which again, doesn’t make them less wealthy or a wannabe. You don’t need to be pretend if you genuinely have it.

I think the “quiet luxury” thing turns nasty in one way.
It’s when someone sniffs at something like LV and sees people who wears louder things as lesser. So these videos lauding quiet luxury as “better” come off classist, racist, etc
If someone likes quiet luxury because they enjoy the simplicity and timelessness of the pieces, that’s fantastic. I’m like that myself!
I think we could just let everyone love what they love. I wish people weren’t weird about it.

it's literally anti classism, especially the WASP version (here, upper-class dress like the working class) it's mocking the vintage gatekeepers sneering at jeans-wearing women, Not Like Other Girls style. It's national but as the normcore version of each nation, that is to be expected. For example, Kate Middleton wearing British clothes, that is logical considering she's from there and lives them, it's anti-LARP. Including wearing jeans, if appropriate. It's mocking the dress expensive crowd by showing you DON'T need to wear some over-priced designer thing to claim you look feminine. Some examples I've seen were thousands for ONE outfit.

This is very true. I think it has to do with looking at what truly improves your life versus what merely appears to do so. A massage gun makes my neck hurt less without having to run to a masseuse. That is a luxurious thing that is wonderful. But, actually choosing what seems luxurious to you requires self awareness and confidence that not everyone has. Ironically a luxurious life often means we opt out of the quick easy fixes that so many people choose to go for. And it is not about being a snob but just wanting quality. For example, a really good cook will probably be hell to go out to eat with because they know they can make better food than many places. So how do you pick where to go? Is it worth it? Would they rather just cook themselves? Do they have a list of the only 5 restaurants in the city they will eat at?

She is also quirky, she doesn’t care for “quiet luxury” or “logos” she wears whatever Tf she wants. I’m very quiet luxury tho, I love that clean lines, mostly neutral (with pops of colour) type of style

I honestly feel like we are moving towards quiet luxury due to the surge in theft. People don’t want to be bragging with logos anymore not just for a certain aesthetic but also for safety reasons. I don’t agree with the thought that people are moving towards quiet luxury with the reasons such as classism, elitism, or racism. To me it seems like the opposite because now people don’t even know if you’re wearing a $1000 T-shirt or a $40 one. You can look just as chic and put together in a cheap outfit vs expensive. Just my two cents. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Quiet Luxury fashion or Loud Luxury fashion? It doesn’t matter to me, I would go for something that values experiences, sustainability, and the appreciation of well-made, enduring products. I try hard to be aware of wasteful consumerism, excessive consumption of goods and resources, things that harm the earth. Sometimes it is a Designer Brand that would give us that assurance of sustainability if they focus on prioritizing craftsmanship & durability…. But they could be making “loud luxury products”?? Maybe…
On the other hand, quiet luxury seem to align with more responsible and mindful consumption practices, reducing waste and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle. But is that really true? I guess it depends on the brand and their whole chain of production and materials sourcing. It would really be a shame if a fashion house produces “Quiet luxury products” but have bad practices that contribute to the depletion of natural resources, increased pollution, and generating harmful wastes.
Either way, I think we need to play our part in being responsible. ♥️♥️♥️ Great topic Caitlin!!!!

In my opinion, quiet luxury is in many ways related to old money verses new money, which in history included races of people believing they were superior to other races, inequality and disadvantages of minorities. Quiet luxury as of now is being used as a trend, which I feel is wrong. This is not to be confused with subjective luxury or luxury being whatever feels luxurious to you. It’s actually simple, wear what makes you feel good. Feeling good is the ultimate goal, not following some stupid trend.

On the topic of fakes: honestly any time I see a LV, of most kinds tbh, I automatically assume it's a knock off. I'm not casting them in a box of "good" or "bad" people if they are fake, I just automatically think it's from DHGate. "Knock off quiet luxury" is definitely a thing. It's where I see aspects of fast fashion come in, but it fails bc it's fast fashion. Fast fashion places like Shein jump on trends for their target audience, quiet luxury included.

I love love love the direction of your content. Speaking what most people aren't speaking of. As I've said before in other videos, how many unboxings of the same bag can we consume? 🫣 I wholeheartedly agree with what's the intention of what you're wearing? And how honest are we with what we wear? I buy fakes when I like a style but I don't believe it's worth paying the high price. And when people compliment it, I let them know immediately it's a fake, for instance. My collection has a variety of luxury AND contemporary bags. Clothes, I don't pay much attention to. For me it's about the accessories. Which I love. I do see everything I purchase as an investment as well, and I have to admit, for instance, Michael Kors will not hold its value on resale as Coach bags do. Dooney and Bourke is the same. I have found Coach bags sell quickly and I haven't taken a loss, on bags I've sold because I found I didn't wear them as I thought I would. It's a whole breakdown of things when it comes to luxury as you said. It's like having a luxury car, but you live in a tiny room you rent. But driving that flashy car shows off to others you are wealthy. I believe, luxury is well rounded. You own a home you can afford, a well paying career/business, you are able to travel and go out, and buy presents for others, afford to contribute to others and share with others, in other words, have a gifting heart, and then also be able to consume and purchase, while having money to save for a future rainy day or emergency. If we are able to budget for all of these areas, and I may be missing an area or two, like monthly bills, then you are enjoying a luxury lifestyle. But if you are giving an appearance of a luxurious lifestyle and find yourself borrowing money, asking family or banks or credit cards to loan you money, then you can't afford a luxury lifestyle. Or at least. You have to prioritize those areas where you spend. To me is more about the well rounded life, than anything else. When my husband and I purchased our first home, I was clear that I didn't want to be house poor. Pour all my money into my house, because I needed to show off I was rich. I knew we needed cars, and I wasn't willing to also pay for flashy cars. Normal cars would do the job. I knew I wanted freedom to enjoy a well rounded life, affording my bills, affording my leisure, and giving back, and to save as well. Just my 2 cents.
