When fidget spinners came out I had just gotten married. My husband loved them and got a decent size collection of them. He has adhd so he never actually stopped using them, they still help him focus and now our kids play with them. Trends can be short lived but I think it’s good to remember that they might be benefiting a group of people in the long term after the hype dies down. Somebody out there is drinking enough water finally because they found the water bottle that is perfect for them and that’s a good that came come from a trend.
The Pokemon Go trend. I was the person outside collecting and playing with pokemon lol. This also shows that nerds will go outside if outside becomes fun lol.
This was the least toxic trend ever. I live in the desert where summers are usually 115 degrees. Didn't stop everyoneeee going outside touching grass, exercising, and socializing.
Water, salt, baking soda, dish soap, and 2 tbsp of rice and shake vigorously for about 5 minutes. This should remove buildup and smells. I've had my hydro flask since 2020. Doesn't smell bad. Be sure to clean the gaskets. Sometimes those should be soaked in hot boiling water for a bit too.
I have even used coffee grounds to eliminate smells. I just take some from my recently brewed filter and scrub it around the sides then let it sit for overnight then wash it out in the morning and smell and taste is nonexistent.
@HeyLauraVan not mixed together, they cancel each other out and you end up with water that didn't accomplish anything. Use baking soda to scour then rinse and use vinegar as a deodorizer
i was a poor kid in the 2010’s when rainbow loom was at its height. my dad taught me well about consumerism and knowing what we like/want/need. i asked for the rainbow loom around the time and he got me a cheap knock off one and a ton of bands. i was grateful regardless, but i still remember my friends and cousins laughing at me for my dark green loom my dad had gotten me :( i ended up HATING the rainbow loom bracelets due to sensory issues so it went unused after the novelty wore off. but because of it, i ended up getting into weaving friendship bracelets and working later on too with textiles. it’s one of the first times i can remember my dad doing his best to educate me on consumerism, spending money, and being resourceful. growing up with that outlook has fundamentally shaped me as a person and has helped me more than ever with the new digital age clashing with overconsumption and consumerism. i’ll forever be grateful for my papa bc of it
Get denture cleaning tablets, fill the water bottle with hot water and add one tablet. Wash after 30 mins. Not only it is sanitized but also any residues and lime scale is removed.
I think it is hilarious that you refer to crackle nails as something novel that hasn't been seen before, because I remember the last time they were super popular in the 90s. I love them, and I still have a bottle of crackle black.
I think I was around 11-12 years old when rainbow loom was super popular so definitely the target demographic. I was really into arts and crafts (and I still am) so I loved the creative aspect of them and my friend and I would go on RUclips and look for video tutorials on how to make the super complicated bracelets and the keychain charms and all kinds of stuff like that. The problem was, those plastic clips that held the bracelets together always broke or fell off and got lost. They weren't made to last so a lot of it just ended up as little bits of plastic garbage.
I still play Pokemon go and it’s so fun and a great way to be social with fellow nerds. Although you can play for free, I definitely spend more money than I’d like to admit to do raids with my friends across the country, buy more pokeballs (you only get so many for free) and if you are catching many Pokemon daily, they run out fast.
Recently found you and have been binging your videos! Rainbow looms are STILL a very hot trend in kids! At least it's still going strong with my 9 yr old & her elementary school. And she's been into it for the past few years. I feel like we had similar type crafty things as kids. Those loom things that make potholders, perler beads, pony beads to make little lizards or other animal things with string and beads. I definitely feel like part of crafty stuff and crafty hobbies is having tons of color options/supplies. But any crafting can become more about the collecting aspect vs the actually making things aspect. It gets that way with most crafty hobbies. It sometimes seems that the collecting and purchasing can be just as fun as the creating.
Glad to have you here and that you've been enjoying the channel! The rainbow loom does remind me of some of the creative 'toys' I saw growing up like light bright and the crafts with the tiny beads that you'd heat up and they'd melt and solidify? I have no idea what that's called. I have high confidence that I would have loved it if it came out when I was younger. I'm glad it's still around and your daughter is enjoying!
The chokehold Toms had on us was so good! I remember in 2008/2009 I was in college and one day it was “Toms Day” where a bunch of students were walking around barefoot in solidarity of the one for one program Toms had at the time. 😂 what a time!
Shutter shades, neon and splatter paint were popular in the 80's...my childhood era! Hardly anything is actually "new," especially when it comes to trends. LOL
I was gonna say vinegar too, I use the cleaning vinegar from dollar tree, I think it's like 5%/6% . Really makes a difference in the coffee machine and to get rid of mildew smell
For cleaning steel thermos’ and bottles I add a spoonful of dishwasher power to the bottle and fill it with hot water and let it sit for 30 min or more. If you have tea or coffee stains it just lifts them off, no scrubbing needed. I soak any rubber gaskets or plastic caps in the mixture too. It could help with the smell too!
@@shawnaripari I just dump some food safe chlorine in the bottle, fill it with water and leave it there for a day. By the next day, all smells are gone and it's good as new. Just rinse it well and you're set
Swell /chilly were designed and marketed as a similar shape and volume replacement for the disposable water bottle. Similar to the keep cup being barista standard/shape so they couldn’t be refused under the machines.
i also worked at indigo and i still have the swell bottle they gave me when i got hired! mine has a purple/blue marble pattern. i still use it. it’s still functional. it takes me back so muchhhh
Love getting the Canadian content about these trends! As an 80s kid/90s teen, it’s amazing how much has changed (ie social media) and how much it will always stay the same. You mentioned tattoos and the first thing I thought of were the horrible tribal barbed armband tattoos of the late 90s! Lol
Ive recently found your channel and I’m really loving these discussions as I’m trying to refocus myself away from over consumption and the “buy” mindset influencers push. And oh my gosh you unlocked a core memory I forgot about with those shutter shades 😅 those were SO popular back in the day lol
I just realized that for some reason bracelets in particular are constantly coming in and out as fads. I’ve been thru the height of WWJD bracelets, then jelly bracelets (if you don’t know the lore go look it up), they eventually got banned from my school, and then Livestrong rubber bracelets.
I've had a pair of Toms since about 2015 and I still wear them every summer! I remember buying them because a RUclipsr I was obsessed with wore them and I thought they looked comfy. One of the local shoe shops near by still sells quite a variety of toms so they must still be a little popular
My water bottle isn't a S'well, but it is that style. Somehow, and very bizarrely because I cannot stand fish, it picked up the odour and flavour of fish 🤢 I managed to get rid of it by soaking it in warm water and bicarbonate of soda. I did it a couple of times, over a period of days, because I wanted to be absolutely sure that the next time I drank from it, I wasn't going to want to vomit. It worked a treat and i still use it today.
Me and my sister made so many things out of rainbow loom definitely felt for that trend. We had so many that ended up collecting dust. We eventually gave them to a school so the kids could use them. I can definitely see now the overconsumption that they created and it’s wild to think about.
When my dog was ill, I had to blend a special food and water mix for her and inject it directly into her stomach. For the blending I used a Nutribullet type of appliance. After her recovery, the thought of using the Nutribullet grossed me out. Tried hot water, dish soap, vinegar and bi carb but didn't work. Only thing that worked for me was using bleach. Start by using the mix proportions on the label for kitchen cleaning. If this doesn't work then try undiluted bleach and rinse out very well to encourage breaking down of the bleach. Good luck!
Clean the bottle with warm water and then pour vinegar in the bottle. Leave it for like at least 2 hours. Then clean it with dish soap. Then put baking soda in the bottle and pour hot water in it. Leave it for some time and wash it and it shoul be odor free.
I am glad I ran up to you in your RUclips channel. I enjoyed the real realistic ad advice that I need to hear every day in my life had to manage my money. Your advice has helping me a lot. Thank you! taking your time to do this video make a solution for this delusional society.
I’m a kid of the 90s so Beanie Babies was my niche. When my dad said we had to let them go, I struggled. I had sooo many. I memorized their names. Had the collector books. I was in deep.
Oh my gosh, I worked out of school and those rubber band bracelets were all the rage. Teachers had to ban them from the classroom, but the kids could play with them outside.😂
I wore Toms for pretty much every year of high school. They were my main shoe, I loved them. Compared to the shoes I have now though (normal sneakers) they def had a much shorter lifespan due to wear and tear getting holes/falling apart. I'm not gonna lie I've considered trying them out again a few times over the years out of curiosity but I have not... yet. I would need to try them on at a store in person to see if they go with my style still or not. But then again, I think I'm in my "high-quality" era and my interests lay in shoes that will last for as many years as possible, which TOMS most def do not.
I actually still wear toms! I’ve stopped falling for the lure of the cute seasonal colors and patterns but I still wear my plain black toms basically every day. I buy a new pair about once a year, and have probably gone through 6 by now? But I wear them because I find them very comfortable and they fit my fairly simple ‘style’. I don’t think I bought them originally because they were trendy, although I’m sure that’s why I knew of them. But I definitely see fewer people wearing them now than when I first bought a pair!
Those Toms shoes are "alpargatas", which are actually one of the best type of shoes! They are proven to be super healthy, the sole does everything right: breathable, weight distribution, grip, toe space and molds in the foot shape, AND they are 100% biodegradable, cost 5 dollars a pair, made and sold locally, last for a long time, can be washed in the washing machine... they are like, the best shoe for us, the economy and the planet ❤ idk what Toms does wrong cuz they should not smell or be so disposable wth. I think the problem is adding an inside sole
This was a great video! I do think, though, that you should have talked about the jelly bracelets from when we were teens in the same section as friendship bracelets, silly bands, and rainbow loom.
For me, I got one in an effort to drink more water. I’m very accident prone so having glasses of water around the house isn’t great. I drink lots of water through out the day and at this point it’s an emotional support possession. I love my water bottle, I like decorating it with stickers, she’s like a constant friend 😂😂😂
I was in elementary school when rainbow loom was at its peak. I had a mini business and everything. I even went back to the hobby at 16 when the pandemic started 😭
@@shawnaripari ye, no money involved but I would trade charms and bracelets for other “currencies.” Like this one girl promised to draw me a cartoon pig if I made her a panda charm LOL
To clean the metal water bottles and lid put a table spoon of baking soda and add boiling water. Let it sit for 2 hours and rinse with clean water. If it does the trick at first, perfect, if it doesn't, do it a few more times. Never store your bottle with the cap on to avoid smells.
I was a silly bands kid and rainbow loom tween. I used my braces rubber bands to make rainbow loom bracelets, and my orthodontist hated me because I never actually used them in my mouth
I personally have never been good at getting smells out of water bottles lol but I’m an actor and in the acting field people spray alcohol (usually vodka) on costumes to get the smell out. So maybe try leaving vodka in it for a few hours lol
I've never heard of Swell though despite being in the US and of the age group. However that particular shape of bottle I do remember for that time. I think at least in my circles we didn't care about brand name, and it was likely that Amazon had dupe bottles selling in the same shape with many color options.
I’m older but for me in the 80s (when i was a kid) it was putting safety pins with beads on them on your shoe laces where the tongue is - now it sounds ridiculous 😹 and you would swap pins with your friends like friendship bracelets (which we also did but with embroidery floss)
Not sure if you've fixed your bottle yet or not, but denture tabs! If use one on my metal tracel cup at the end of my work week as a maintenance but if I forget it in my bag over the weekend and it's really gross I'll use 2 instead lol. They're basically the exact same thing being sold as metal bottle or cup cleaners but way cheaper!
Toms had such a choke hold over me in high school (2014-2018) I still own a pair but I haven’t worn them since 2021 probably. They had so many cute prints and colors but they left a killer tan line which is a big reason why I retired them lol
I had a swell with a white background and gold stars. I used to bring it to the gym with me all the time, it got kind of beat up and had like black spots on it from the rubber of the machines. The only problem is, which is my biggest problem always, is the amount of liquid. Mine was relatively small 500ml, and then I got a bigger water bottle but it was too big or heavy. I have neither of these anymore.
The whole crackle nail segment I was sitting there quietly thinking about my couple bottles of cracking polish 😅 I have never seen advertisements for it, I just love the effect it gives (especially when the polish layer is thin in the one I'm used to - it doesn't flake apart so dramatically, leaving only thin stripes of the colour underneath peaking through), so I have a couple different colours, and used to have even more before they dried out
Lol I still wear crackle nails. Especially during Summer. But also during halloween and Mardi Gras. Or if you're going to a rock concert. They just look super cool to me and I love mixing and matching the different colors lol
i was obsessed with rainbow looms but at the start my mum only bought me the starter pack because she thought it was a waste of money then after the hyped died i got so many packs on clearance because i was still really enjoying making them and i still have a ton of bands left and occasionally make stuff
Same! I love that thing. I use it for water and flavored fizzy water. My husband still loves his hydro flask. But my swell has taken a beating. I got one with a colorful design. But it has never leaked. And it’s only got one dent and that’s a long story. But I only bought one 🤷🏻♀️. I love it.
I fell SO HARD for rainbow loom bracelets. Someone gave me one and I disassembled it and reassembled it into different designs that didn’t require the loom. Even after I got the loom, I would reuse bracelets that I made because I didn’t have access to many bands. I did very complex designs an would silently judge those that had basic designs because they weren’t into it enough.
I am probably one of the very few people in the country who genuinely thinks crackle nails are cute. A few years ago, I tracked down a crackle nail polish from Amazon. I always wanted crackle nail polish since I was a kid.
I had a pair of Toms that I LOVED & wore from 6th grade through 9th grade, when I finally grew out of them. I remember thinking the 1 for 1 model was so cool! Also definitely didn’t play Pokemon Go in its prime, but got super into it in college & still play it now! I’ve never spent $ on it but I know people who do because it’s a hobby for them to go on walks and play. Also definitely had a few of the feather hairs back in the day.
I’ve never liked the splatter paint even as a kid, specifically because one of my friends in elementary wore a shirt from Justice to school and tried to tell everyone that it looked the way it did because Justin Bieber had splashed paint on her when she went to meet him over the summer 🙄 As if we were all blind and couldn’t see the heart logo and the stupid little monkey mascot on the front of the shirt. Or that we never went outside and saw the same shirt on the rack in store lol.
That incident planted the seeds of distrust in trends in general, and thankfully I have found things that make sense for me rather than making sense for internet
I only heard of s'well because i worked at starbucks at the time and saw them rolling in. I didnt like them becasue they looked hard to clean as i had a metal water bottle with a small opening like that when i was in school and it was so annoying to clean and it stunk like fish and the smell would not go away.
I have a Swell x Lilly Pulitzer water bottle and I really loved mine but the cleaning it is such a nightmare 😮 I’ve soaked mine with baking soda and hot water and that works but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s still not clean if that’s making any sense
I usually don't follow trends, unless they fit my style and since I don't have social media profiles RUclips is the only place where I hear of them, I'm less expose to the crazyness lol.
Near me Hydroflasks were way more popular than Swell bottles. Also I remember when everyone had Ugh boots and Northface Denali jacket on. At least I still have my Northface and I got it in middle school, I’m 30 and I still wear it sometimes lol.
the justgirlythings tumblr posts now are mainly a throwback because the creator came out and was like "oh the reason i loved talking about girl stuff is because i LIKED girls"... she's married now :)
I had a couple of Swell’s for me and my kids. We have one left that hasn’t been lost. I had Tom’s. Used to love them but you are right on the no protection in the toes and the stink was real 🤢
Silly bandz, I still have one of those and wear it every now and then. Also pokemon go is still very active but with us people that has never let go off pokemon as a franchise.
I’m turning 35 Friday. I still use my swell. I play Pokémon go. I wear Tom’s lol. Like it’s like when people stopped wearing Birkenstock clogs. I still wore mine. I finally had to get a new pair actually this year. And replaced my sandals (got lucky thrifting) But lol I’m not in style 😂😂😂😂 and I do not care. If you see me walking around in a pair of Tom’s, drinking out of my swell playing Pokémon go then wave.
I had Tom's and I really loved them for the cool patterns on them until my feet got too big(women's 12) and they only had up to 11 Silly bands were intense and if you didn't have a glow in the dark dinosaur you weren't cool I still have rainbow loom rubber bands to this day and now I just use them for my hair
God, so much of this was a blast from the past! Not long ago I found one of those bottles at Goodwill for a buck and was blown away since I'm used to them being sooo trendy and expensive! As for PokemonGo- I was one of the folks anxiously awaiting for it to come out and even ran the PoGo group for my town lol. Thing is, I was already in the know- I had played Niantic's previous game and PoGo is pretty much a (much better!) dupe. You find landmarks and try to win them over for your team and battle others, etc... But then I got the email saying they were scrapping it for a Pokemon game and my friends and I were over the moon! I think you kinda just already had to be in the game sphere- whether mobile or Pokemon- to have gotten wind early on! I'm kinda sad to learn that Toms are kinda not the greatest though. I still think they're remarkably cute but they're still pricy for me- plus they don't really cater to bigger feet 🫠
When fidget spinners came out I had just gotten married. My husband loved them and got a decent size collection of them. He has adhd so he never actually stopped using them, they still help him focus and now our kids play with them. Toms and anything that dumps tons of free clothes undermines local industry, which is something to look into when during for the charity aspect.

They are proven to be super healthy, the sole does everything right: breathable, weight distribution, grip, toe space and molds in the foot shape, AND they are 100% biodegradable, cost 5 dollars a pair, made and sold locally, last for a long time, can be washed in the washing machine... they are like, the best shoe for us, the economy and the planet ❤
idk what Toms does wrong cuz they should not smell or be so disposable wth. I think the problem is adding an inside sole
This was a great video! I do think, though, that you should have talked about the jelly bracelets from when we were teens in the same section as friendship bracelets, silly bands, and rainbow loom.
adding...livestong bracelets (yellow bands), "Italian" charm bracelets
I LOVED and still love crackle nails. ❤
What is with the water bottle obsession 😂😂😂 people have I don't get it
For me, I got one in an effort to drink more water.
WAIT you had a rainbow loom business in elementary school. I would like all the details on this 😅
@@shawnaripari ye, no money involved but I would trade charms and bracelets for other “currencies.” Like this one girl promised to draw me a cartoon pig if I made her a panda charm LOL
To clean the metal water bottles and lid put a table spoon of baking soda and add boiling water. Let it sit for 2 hours and rinse with clean water. If it does the trick at first, perfect, if it doesn't, do it a few more times. Never store your bottle with the cap on to avoid smells.
I have been storing it with the cap on so this is contributing. Thank you!
I was a silly bands kid and rainbow loom tween. I used my braces rubber bands to make rainbow loom bracelets, and my orthodontist hated me because I never actually used them in my mouth
Lol I still have a swell just like that , pink, and I love it
I still own Tom shoes! lol and I keep buying them cuz they are my favorite to wear when doing errands
Never heard of swell bottles was it just in USA?
They're based in the US so it does make sense for them to have had a big impact domestically. I'm not too far away so that also makes sense too 😅
I’m older but for me in the 80s (when i was a kid) it was putting safety pins with beads on them on your shoe laces where the tongue is - now it sounds ridiculous 😹 and you would swap pins with your friends like friendship bracelets (which we also did but with embroidery floss)
Does it? Because to me it sounds creative
I do remember this safety pin stuff and did make myself a safety pin bracelet when I was 13! Thank you for unlocking this memory
I’m probably your age. I was 8-18 in the 80’s and I remember the safety pin thing.
fistilled white vinegar inside the water bottle for smell! dilute w water and let sit😊
As like a twelve year old, crackle nails were sooooo cool to me. Just girly things had the biggest hold on me omggg
I think mine is the 700ml one and also felt like it wasn't a ton of water but super heavy especially with the metal so I totally feel you on this!
I own chillys water bottle (same shape as swell). I own a dark green one since 2017(I think). I have bashed it slightly, but I still use it
The whole crackle nail segment I was sitting there quietly thinking about my couple bottles of cracking polish 😅 I have never seen advertisements for it, I just love the effect it gives (especially when the polish layer is thin in the one I'm used to - it doesn't flake apart so dramatically, leaving only thin stripes of the colour underneath peaking through), so I have a couple different colours, and used to have even more before they dried out
I'm glad you still love and enjoy them!!
Lol I still wear crackle nails. Especially during Summer. But also during halloween and Mardi Gras. Or if you're going to a rock concert. They just look super cool to me and I love mixing and matching the different colors lol
I totally had the feathers in 1978. I loved them.🥰
Have you tried the cleaning tablets? I have a bunch of thrifted swell bottles. I love them!
Omg, flashbacks to the tickle me Elmo craze I participated in in High School. I wonder where mine is at now....
i was obsessed with rainbow looms but at the start my mum only bought me the starter pack because she thought it was a waste of money then after the hyped died i got so many packs on clearance because i was still really enjoying making them and i still have a ton of bands left and occasionally make stuff
I still have my s'well and still use it regularly. I have a brush I use to clean the inside and I only use it for water - it's held up great.
I always wanted crackle nail polish since I was a kid.
have you tried putting coffee for a while and then washing the s'well water bottle? It's how my family removes smells from kitchen stuff
The Tervis cups too!!! 🥤
Crackle nails had already been in and out by then in the 80s or 90s and have been in and out AGAIN recently. This is why I keep my nail stuff
i still make rainbow loom bracelets sometimes. they're so silly and fun to make
Don’t forget the beanie baby craze!
The metal water bottle smell won't go away no matter what you try. Toss it.
I have a Swell x Lilly Pulitzer water bottle and I really loved mine but the cleaning it is such a nightmare 😮 I’ve soaked mine with baking soda and hot water and that works but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s still not clean if that’s making any sense
I remember this collab! I JUST cleaned mine because of this video and you're so right that it's pain because of the narrow neck
I feel like dewy foundations are a fad also. I have an oily complexion so I just see "dew" as oil and I want to blot it so badly!
I usually don't follow trends, unless they fit my style and since I don't have social media profiles RUclips is the only place where I hear of them, I'm less expose to the crazyness lol.
love to hear you buy what works for you
Near me Hydroflasks were way more popular than Swell bottles. Also I remember when everyone had Ugh boots and Northface Denali jacket on. At least I still have my Northface and I got it in middle school, I’m 30 and I still wear it sometimes lol.
I knew i was forgetting a water bottle!! I also remember the Denali jackets!!
the justgirlythings tumblr posts now are mainly a throwback because the creator came out and was like "oh the reason i loved talking about girl stuff is because i LIKED girls"... she's married now :)
I consume an obscene amount of RUclips content and this is the first I’m hearing about some of these water bottles. 🙃
I think some of these water bottles were popular before influencer culture was really prominent so perhaps that plays into it?
Vinegar for the water bottle
I had a couple of Swell’s for me and my kids. We have one left that hasn’t been lost. I had Tom’s. Used to love them but you are right on the no protection in the toes and the stink was real 🤢
you live in a house or go to a home in the summer with toms 😂
If my water bottles smell I soak them in baby bottle sterilizing fluid. It does the trick and if it is safe for babies then it is surely safe for me!
And replaced my sandals (got lucky thrifting)
But lol I’m not in style 😂😂😂😂 and I do not care. If you see me walking around in a pair of Tom’s, drinking out of my swell playing Pokémon go then wave.
A dishwasher pod and boiling water, let it sit. Cleans my bottles great!
lmfaoooooo TOMSSSSSSS
I’m in my 20s and I still make rainbow loom bracelets :)
it genuinely looks so fun!! When I was making this video I was very tempted to ask around to see if anyone I know still has supplies
I had Tom's and I really loved them for the cool patterns on them until my feet got too big(women's 12) and they only had up to 11
Silly bands were intense and if you didn't have a glow in the dark dinosaur you weren't cool
I still have rainbow loom rubber bands to this day and now I just use them for my hair
so sorry to hear that they didn't carry your size
Try using potable aqua chlorine dioxide water purification tablets for the smell? Leave them in the bottle overnight
What I didn’t like about Tom’s is that they dated so fast and look like hell!😂
Bro slap bracelets were around way before all this nonsense
I made over a hundred rubber band bracelets it was a blast
glad to hear you enjoyed your experience!
blah blah blah
