That’s why I protect myself from social media. I can post twice a month here and there but I DO NOT scroll a timeline. Everybody who really matters to me - simply calling me and sending messages and pictures on my WhatsApp personally. Other stuff doesn’t exist for me - I’m not triggered 😅

I post for my family because my husband and kids likes to look through it every now and then. It’s an online family journal/ album for them. They would go through and reminisce about the experience. I barely allow any followers. Just close family and friends.

    • @hettijayne

I agree. My partner hates posting on social media and hates having photos taken. And I’ve always felt bad or compare other people sharing their relationship online and felt like he didn’t love me as much because he didn’t want to share it. When actually it’s got nothing to do with that. A lot of those people over sharing stuff have broken up. And we’re still together. It doesn’t mean anything.

The 'icks' come across to me as people really going out of their way to find something in the other person to take issue with/find fault with.
Overall, I've always found the oversharing of relationships on social media a bit weird, but maybe that's because I'm a very private person. I remember seeing a quote several years ago (can't remember who it was from) along the lines of, 'relationships last longer when nobody knows your business,' and that's something I very much believe in.

  • @nejackson9570
    @nejackson9570 7 месяцев назад +16

Caitlin, I do agree with you! I’m not on Instagram etc at all anymore and my husband never had been-he’s incredibly private and if I posted his messages to me I’m sure it would make him very uncomfortable. Just to start with.
A dark side of this-haven’t we all heard the joke/meme that the couple that loooooooove each other super publicly (always texting, doing elaborate things, buying hugely expensive presents), and it all becomes very performative. Those are the couples that usually break up. It’s almost like the woman is looking for validation from others or trying to project a relationship she doesn’t have. Someone I’m close to almost divorced, the entire time posting mushy things about breakfast in bed. It’s weird and sad.
Men are different. Women are different. Stages of life are different. My husband isn’t a naturally romantic person and he’s not the sort to do anything like this. Imagine having a social media post be the “expert” advice that says he’s “wrong” or “settling.” Loooool

Hi Caitlin! I had to chime in 😀. I think in addition to making some women feel badly that their spouse hasn’t done anything elaborate for them, I think it also may make men feel terribly that they either didn’t think of something like that, or couldn’t afford to do something elaborate for the person they love. It’s a really damaging two way street on that one. I think the gift of someone’s time is amazing. The thought that someone could be doing any number of things on a particular day, but they chose to spend their time (which they will not have back) with me is just enough for my heart. I hope that made sense 😊

I dont pay attention to other peoples relationships so I cant help you there, but man, i fly all the time and my husband picks me up all the time and i have late/delayed flights all the time and let my husband know. and he just says 'no worries. ill grab you a cup of coffee while i wait' i guess we're just doing it wrong. no. no we're not. id rather have the starbucks or timmy's waiting for me when I get off the plane than a stupid text with smoochie faces and then have it posted all over social media. I think you're right with the INTENT behind all of it.. they want the ATTENTION and the VIEWS and the LIKES and the FOLLOWERS and the WHATEVER. The only time my husband EVER put my shoes off or on was after I had surgery and literally COULDNT BEND OVER to put them on or take them off. And no, I didnt have to ask. I'm a grown woman. Normally I can put my own shoes on and off LOL. I bet most of these women are also women who hash tag everything with #bossbabe (major pet peeve of mine!) LOL My husband doesnt have a romantic bone in his body, bless his heart. But he would take a bullet for me, without a second thought. He gives me his heart every day. I don't want for anything. Could I BUY luxury items? Yes. Do I? no. Its not me. ;) Do I have the ability to do the things I want to? Yes and I do. And.... it's not publicized. we are perfectly imperfect together. even if he is from canada and eats poutine. ick. ;)

Aaaaaaaaah just got to the ending of the video about the shoe thing. First of all, never in a million years thought of that being a thing. My husband has helped me with my shoes-when I was nine months pregnant and IN LABOR 😂😂😂 something I find so bizarre about these social trends (as someone who only experiences them through RUclips) is how completely unsustainable/immature they are. The man of your dreams shouldn’t be defined by something only possible with certain time and financial and life stage limitations. Real non-performative relationships grow and change and that’s absolutely what they’re supposed to do.

Can we also talk about the annoying platitudes people post on Facebook? It the ones where the woman is essentially trying to describe herself in third person. It'll be one of those generic wordy posts like "she is seen by all as strong and fierce. She is a rock, but deep down, she is a soul crying to be understood with so much love... blah blah blah." It's like, no, you're clearly in need of validation. You want people to look at that say, oh yes, that is you. It's just cringe. Agreed 200%…!! The fact that we’re at the end of 2023 and bout to go into 2024 in less than 2 weeks baffles me that people are still desperate for attention and most importantly followers! I mean if it was 10 years ago or when Instagram just came out I would totally understand it… Desperate for followers were like back in my 20s when Twitter was the rage…

And yeah I personally think if a guy or the partner really cares for you it’s not all about these materialistic things. How about making sure that we have a roof to sleep under and food to eat. That’s what true love is. Just cause he don’t want to untie your heels he’s not good enough like are you for real? Or are you disabled that you can’t do what even small kids could have done on their own…

I never thought that showing presents could harm someone, but I definitely agree with you on that point now when I think about it. I see that top bloggers quite stopped to show presents/unboxings right now, and maybe soon it will become a “unfashionable vibe” overall. I have seen your videos a few years ago and now I must say I love the transformation of your personality and your channel much! I am also on my way to minimise purchases and decluttering my wardrobe ( I got rid of approximately probably 300-400 pieces for past few years) and now realising more and more that if I buy smth it may be very similar to what I had before. I have to disagree with most of these. The bar should be set higher, not lower. It's great guys are seeing that it's important to most woman to make these grand gestures on birthdays, anniversaries etc. If any of these makes you (not you Caitlin, but anyone watching) feel 'bad' that their significant other doesn't do these things, well that means you want these things, doesn't it. I refuse to settle for mediocrity. If anything, it should be 'normalized' to have immense appreciation for your partner vs taking your SO for granted, not caring about birthdays etc. Some people might not care about birthdays etc, but generally the majority of people do. Loved the video and all your videos and it's great hearing different perspectives.

I agree with this! (On that note, sorry I haven't been around in eons, tons going on in my life, most of it not good) I think I'd be weirded out by anyone posting every intimate detail of everything we do on social media. I'm a kind of affectionate guy who does romantic stuff but I'm not someone who ever does these overly elaborate things. I hate to admit it but when I see those overly elaborate rose petal arrangements, part of me wants to grab a leaf blower and go to town and laugh like a cartoon villain. All kidding aside though, I think a sixth trend I'd like to add to this list (thankfully haven't seen much of this in recent years) is the posts that shame people for being sad over not having a date, the ones that go "if you're feeling sad about not having a Valentine on Valentine's Day, some people don't have a mother on Mother's Day" type posts, as someone who lost his mother three years ago, I don't appreciate people using my trauma to shame people who are feeling lonely. Anyways, I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year's.

I’d be pretty pissed If my husband spent that much money on balloons and flowers and chocolates at every anniversary. That’s so much money on temporary things and we have shared finances. We do a weekend away for our anniversary, and we don’t do gifts on events. Sometimes we get each other presents but it’ll be a random thing, like I came home to a new puzzle when I had a few days off. Presents don’t matter, we’re adults, we can but the things we want for ourselves. What’s actually important is how we treat each other and the day to day care we show each other.

It's insane! We aren't encouraging self-awareness, introspection, accountability, no! It's all how you feel is how it is!
Conclusion- We are all doomed and need Jesus!
Thank you Caitlin for addressing this, much needed!

Fortunately I’m middle age and most of my SM peers doesn’t follow these trends. But there are a couple that post those annoying huge lovey dovey paragraphs post about their spouses. But DM me venting about their spouse and kids later. Even considering leaving her husbands for the most pettiest reason. I had to talk her down.

It's a strange world we are living in....on the one side we go onto the barricades for protecting the little of the privacy we are still allowed to have and......then we splatter our most intimate/important/special moments/details for the whole world to piss on it😮😮😮. Sounds sick to me and no kidding!

I'm not even the type of person to use social media. I have a facebook account and that's it. Just use it to find events and keep in touch with people. Change my profile picture once a year maybe. I had an ex who would get upset that I didn't post things of us ever. I had all the validation I needed within my relation ship but I don't understand peoples obsession or measurement of a good relation ship by what is shared with others online or how much you share.

I know a couple that will post "man crush Monday" and "woman crush Wednesday" pics of each other every week, along with matching couples outfits for "date night" every weekend, posing in every picture in a way that will always show off her giant rock on her finger 🤢🤮 I'm sorry, but all of that is just doing waaaaaay too much. When couples are that over the top (and consistently for like 2 years straight) it doesn't make me think "oh wow, they are so in love!", it makes me suspicious that they have to perform for social media so everyone is "jealous" of their relationship.

Oversharing in general drives me kind of nuts. I don't need to know most of this and neither does anyone else! I know someone that used to send out these long "stream of consciousness" emails when they traveled to everyone and it was so annoying. My sister and I used to joke that we were waiting for the one that had every time they took a crap in it. I also think so much of it is fake or someone begging for attention. It's like I've always said--that coworker or friend who is constantly talking about their sex life in reality probably doesn't have one.

A few things- my hubby and I never share gifts on social media. We do buy very expensive gifts, experiences, trips and luxury items, but we do not like the aesthetic of showing off to family and friends. Also, everyone has a different relationship and different personality. If my hubby sent me that airport text, I would assume he was being held at him point and I needed to call police. Finally, given that the average American woman is now 5’4” and 180 lbs, maybe her guy just doesn’t want to see her gross fat feet.🤷🏼‍♀️

Thought it was just me who finds such posts cringy.. Posting to all one's friends and tagging your partner on a quote, throwback photos, etc. hints communication problems in the relationship. I used to be a little like that, but wisdom has taught me to leave my relationship out of socmed. We aren't even friends. I find that just sharing personal photos, dedications, and messages with my partner personally is more intimate. No audience needed.

My partner doesn’t like me posting to much about us (not do I) because he deems it as bragging about our relationship. He’s right. Also we’re both very private and those sweet things and, honestly, cheesy things we do for each other are between us. No need to brag. If I have something to share that he did for me, I just tell my closest friends and my family. I don’t even keep in touch with 97% of the people I’m connected to online so they definitely don’t need to know anything about my most intimate and personal relationships.

What we find attractive is firstly physical and mostly biological/evolutionary, so the whole point of an ick is that it is understood to be irrational, but the people who get the ick can't really help no longer finding that person attractive

It wasn't some stupid arbitrary thing. When I first heard of the ick, it made sense. Someone finally put into words the phenomenon going on in my head, but since then, the ick has blown up and the concept has been greatly misapplied.

It's quite black and white to go from "I don't like when guys are too nice" to "I like to be treated like s__t"...the reality of the situation is a bit more nuanced...the best analogy for me when thinking of the guy that's too nice is to compare him to someone handing something out for free on the street...usually...if you don't have to work for something and it's being handed out for free on the street, it's usually not that valuable...that doesn't mean the girl wants to be treated horribly, she just wants to know that she has a man that is not a desperate pushover and a man that's real and not just putting up a front of being the "nice guy"

Personally, I guess all of things and types of content you mentioned is mainly made for the views and following, yes, some of them can be genuine as text messages, or some celebration preparations, but for me a lot of it seems staged. As for shoes, I think some men care about the women and want to take care of his girl, but it feels strange that people film it=) some men can just have kinks about shoes and feet, it is really harmless kink though=)

As someone in an inter-racial marriage (black/white) I can’t stand inter-racial social media couples acting like their relationship is different because of their race. Of course certain things happen because you are of different races but 99% of the time it just a normal everyday marriage.

Everybody is trying to market themselves. It's the commodification of the self.
Then people wonder why the suicide rate is so high: people's inner world simply isn't matching the reality.
I just watched a documentary on fame, and the pressures thereof. It's quite insane that seemingly 'everyone' wants fame and when they actually get there, realise it's a gilded cage. You cannot go out of your famously large house and compound, because you will be gawped at and mobbed. All interactions become fake and loaded with agendas. It's horrible! It doesn't fix your problems it gives you new ones and isolates you from normal existence.
We should celebrate our ordinary lives, because we have no idea how lucky we are to be in a first world country (speaking for myself there) and also not have problems with privacy and autonomy. If we want to go out to a restaurant it doesn't involve a military operation. We aren't constantly scrutinised and get hate mail. This is why famous people end up together, and why their relationships often fail. There isn't enough normality. Sorry for the extra rant!
