Re: Flying first class - I was a flight attendant for several years and 99.999% of those who fly first class on a regular basis are business people. They never take photos of themselves and rarely do they even want anything from us! I've had so many business passengers just get on the plane and fall asleep. When we would have passengers in first class ringing the call button and demanding drink after drink we knew they weren't regular fliers, and they were oftentimes the rudest people on the plane. That, above everything else, screams "classless" to me which ironically is the opposite of what they're trying to convey to the internet!

Im here because i work in an expensive bedding shop. I am 4 weeks in and cant believe what people buy. They come in and spend hundreds on bedding sets and say things like "hmm no not that one, i have a similar set in my villa in spain" or "im here because I'm looking for a change up. Im bored of the sheets I have on now, its been a few months". And I just think excuse me? Do you know the time, effort, land and resources these items have took to make, but you're bored of them after a few months? It has really opened my eyes to how bad things have got. Just 20 years ago we used to keep using things until they were no longer functional, but now people go out and spend £100 on a bedspread every 6 months because they think their bedroom has to always be ready for a photoshoot. It needs to stop, its not normal.

I agree with the flat tummy. A lot of people don't realize that you have to be at a very low body fat percentage (around 15-16%) but also have some muscle built up to look "good". That takes a lot of work at the gym and in the kitchen. Realistically most people can't keep that up long-term. Also, most of them are sporting a good tan - which will help define your muscles/body.

That's exactly what I tell myself when I find myself feeling envious of people I see on social media, whether it's trips or material goods: "It's not normal." Also, things aren't always as they seem. It can appear like people have it easy, or things come easy. Like a family I know just went to Disney for a week, and stayed at one of their very expensive resorts. My first thought was, "Aww! I wish I could do that for my kids!!!" Later, I found out that the parents are both super hard-working, so much that their kids are in daycare very early in the morning, and get picked up very late in the evening. (Not judging - just saying how it is.) Meanwhile, I'm a stay-at-home mom, so we've had to make sacrifices (a one-night trip to Niagara Falls is our idea of a vacation.😆) but I'm thankful I was able to be at home with my kids, and they get dropped off and picked up my me. So many great points. I stopped getting my nails done regularly because of the lockdowns in 2020, I realised how much time I was wasting getting them done & never bothered to go back again once everything opened back up, now I just keep them neat, tidy & buffed myself. I don’t feel any less for it. My incredibly modest handbag collection already contains more than I use on a regular basis, so there’s no way I’m adding anything that I don’t have a direct purpose for. Same goes for clothing, I have an average amount & still forget about particular items I already own, no need to overwhelm myself with excessive amounts of new purchases there either.
As one of the few freaks who has a naturally flat & toned tummy it’s still not like that all of the time, I bloat after a big meal, when I’m stressed, or at specific times in my cycle just like everyone else. So a completely flat tummy isn’t normal for ANYONE all of the time, not even the few people blessed with a body that doesn’t store much fat there. So how about we all decide that a little bit of a poochy belly is actually quite cute & leave social media influencers to influence each other.

Agreed. Also, it is not normal to pretend you can have and do everything. People for example cannot be a top lawyer while also being at home to raise kids. People pretend on social media that you don’t have to choose life priorities and that it doesn’t have consequences. And to make it worse many of the “compromises” screw up both things instead of just one. It is a very unhelpful delusion that leads to poor planning and decisions.

I was in line at TJ Maxx surrounded by women who looked like they could be Instagram models. They had the hair, make up, spider lashes, long nails, Stanley cups and status bags. I was dressed normal in jeans, sneakers and my TN Titans hoodie. My hair was in two strand twists. I have been working on my skin this year. Anyway, a man came all the to the front of the line just to tell me how beautiful I was, that my skin was beautiful and how refreshing it was to see a "normal" woman because everyone is starting to look the same. Then he went back to the back of the line. It was nice getting a compliment for just being "basic".

@@neromillieI really get your point here to be honest. I think the same but I see that there is no way to communicate to these women that this is not beneficial for them in a long term maybe even short because they always take it as an offence or jealousy or that you are the one insecure.
Obviously almost all of us have something we could improve in our apperance so most of the discussions will end up accusing someone of being insecure. The point that you or me are trying to make is that these women are just doing too much, And I will say it - too much unnecessary damage to their health and psychic just to have the feeling of confidence and good enoughness based on the looks. Their mental health also matters, their bodies also matters. All the industry isnt natural - they tell ypu that everything is safe but based on research that says that small amount is safe. but if the small amount is multiplied by 100 because its coming from everywhere there we have women with cancer at the young ages. Mental health the same - conditioning that when you look good you are getting love, co pliments appreciation so you keep maintaining thatlook because without it you may not be loved anymore. I am not saying everyone has these issues but I am sure I am talking about majority of people. So I know why I will never be telling women to get all the available trash on their bodies or buy designer bags because I know these dont do much for people and they would be much better using stuff to build their self woorth and stay healthy physically = much better lives.
Iused to love fashion but I think it has been taken to the extreme and destroys our lives, the same for cosmetics and other trends. Not a lot of people are interested enough in health. The life we live now its not the life we are designed to live as humans.

My friend that I made recently recommended I should try to get my nails done to "treat" myself and well...I tried, and oh I tried to understand as a woman that part of this woman's world. For one, I am so unfamiliar and uncomfortable with manis and pedis and I grew up in Europe where having a mani and pedis was not such a deeply ingrained cultural thing and also money was tight and my mom only indulged in getting her hair done so that I understood. But now as I've been living in the US for over a decade, just everyone gets their nails done and it's so normal, even stress-free and supposedly relaxing? So, I tried following my friend's suggesting and six months down the line I had a full blown mental breakdown, because it became so overwhelming. Me having to constantly schedule an appointment and also come in for them to fix the chipping. The nail techs were harsh on my nails with the filing, my nails were getting weaker and chipping so quickly even using gel and some builder gel, I felt like they never were listening to me, being dismissive of what I wanted and expected, the proximity was too much, I hated the feeling like I had to do small-talk for an hour straight and the waiting was killing me. None of this was relaxing at all and it made me wonder if I was a woman at all for not enjoying this :(

A new handbag each month (or year!) is deffffinitely not normal in my reality. I've been using the same two handbags (one summer, one winter) for I'd say close to 10 years now. I can't imagine the decision-fatigue I would face each day if I had a whole pile of them! 😳 I have two small clutches and a straw bag for special occasion outfits that call for those, although tbh I rarely use them. I purchased each bag preowned for less than $100 (less than $50 in most cases) and I get compliments from strangers on them ALL the time... probably more than any other part of my outfits. If I had a million dollars I would never dream of spending $6000 on a bag because I'd be scared to take it anywhere! My water bottle leaks in my bag almost weekly, I'm regularly around dirt, dust... hopefully someday children. I'd much rather enjoy being in the moment, and have more spare moments to enjoy than to spend my life saving for, and saving, physical possessions. To whoever is reading this: if you feel like the people around are expecting you to work your life away in order to have a new handbag each time you see them, I can confidently say -- they are not. Or, if they are, perhaps a stocktake on the people in your life is in order.

I do know that she enjoyed them while she was alive and I only kept a few choice pieces as a way to remember her.

I really love these videos! Feel like I would be able to talk and rant to you about these subjects for hours!
One thing I do have to say, when you live in Europe it is really easy to go travelling within Europe. Europe isn’t super big and we have open borders so it’s really easy to travel within when you’re a European citizen. That’s how we (normal people) are able to take 4 to 5 trips a year. We can just take our car and an 8 hour drive gets us to Italy, Berlin, south of France,… plus, a lot of Europeans have a company car, which also cuts back on the costs of travelling by car.
And even travelling overseas is quite ‘easy’ for us, because we are such centrally placed between east and west… but I do agree that those bougie trips occurring non-stop are definitely NOT normal. There is so much fake in the world. And even though we get to experience a lot of those bougie trips, the jet set lifestyle is not the thing you want to have in life. It’s so so so fake.

I just discovered your channel - this is literally my first video of yours - and I want to say BRAVO❣️ I honestly believe that these phone influencers are doing a lot of harm to the young people of today. To be transparent, I am a 59 year old woman who lives in the Canadian Arctic. There are no nail techs, hair stylists, or even doctors in our wee fly in / fly out town of about 700 ppl. We do fly a lot (that’s just a given due to our location), but there is no first class on our flight to a major airport. Everyone flies the same up here. We do, however, try to book first class on every other flight we can. My back is all messed up (I am in a wheelchair) and hubby’s knees are shot so the first class seats are just much more comfortable. Thank heavens that these issues happened when we were financially able to do it. If w3 had been hurt when we were still raising our children, we would have been hooped! The flat tummy thing is a long ago dropped dream. After giving birth to three children - one by Caesarian - as well as three miscarriages and three abdominal surgeries (I just now noticed how prevalent the number three is! lol), there is NO way this tummy is getting flat ever again! It bothered me for a very long time (about two decades, tbh) but I realized just about the time I was fifty that it really didn’t matter. I eat healthy as we cook every meal from scratch and I finally learned to put the dream of my twenty year old body where it belongs…… in the past. This is my NOW, and by looking back I risk issuing what is I the here and now. Since I admit to a tiny bit of FOMO, looking back just didn’t work and I was miserable.
Today I can honestly say that I love myself, flaws and all. That was hard for so long but my grandbabies have allowed me to see through their eyes. I don’t think I will ever make it to their picture of me - one granddaughter told me I was her secret agent superhero - but I try to now everyday and that leaves me no time to obsess on things that just don’t matter.

I love your new direction of the channel! I totally agree with this video on you saying that social media is "not normal" most of the time. I used to think that I was poor because I don't travel overseas every two weeks or so (like what you see online) then I realized that they actually only went for one trip and "cheat" others by taking many different photos and saying that they are there now. I hope to see more videos from you with this kind of direction!

Thank you for the reminder! It is really nice to hear that these are not normal (especially the one about flat tummies).
And I think they don’t even have to be “the goal” to aspire. at the end of the day, there probably are other activities that is going to make happier than spending time obsessively searching for the new item to buy.
& I agree with most of these points - except holidays. But living in europe, traveling is definitely cheaper than Australia (I wanted to go there for the last 3 years, but I am always deterred by the expense). :)

Really glad you mentioned the research for online shopping. Whenever I shop on Amazon I swear I’ve spent HOURS wasting time scrolling & scrolling comparing every item & reading every description, sometimes just to not even find what I really want & it resulted in nothing, the amount of time I’ve wasted online shopping is infuriating

  • @meryemm.2820

Great video Caitlin! It is not normal to travel that much, unless you are doing it as a job or if you are on a sabbatical. I had friends working in the tourism industry always sharing pictures of their new travel destination. From the outside it looked like they were enjoying life better than the others, but when talking to them, they will tell me how exhausted that life is, the family issues of being away, always on the go and changing luggage frequently, etc. Everything comes with pros and cons, we just have to figure out what we value more. Relating to those influencers travelling in first class, I think I saw while ago a RUclipsr exposing them of faking travelling in first or business class. I think you showed in this video one of those influencer girls which had a picture taken in first class, but then on the same flight, a follower exposed her with a picture in her "true" seat in economy! Lol!!! I find this quite depressing, that you need to lie and fake it to keep up the appearance of being wealthy, I find it quite stupid tbh. Lastly, regarding shopping, I agree it takes a lot of time to keep shopping and looking for the next thing to buy. I don't know how many influencers do it, I would give up. A part from the money you waste, but just the energy of researching the next bag to buy, have space in your wardrobe for it, and also have enough occasions to wear it to make it worth the money. I have a friend who has spending issues, I am trying to help. She is seeing a therapist for this, but the amount of shopping she does is incredible. She has 2 rooms just for clothes. I asked her if she needed help when she moved. It was super hard to see how these material things can chain you. I managed to persuade her to get rid of 1 bag full of clothes she never wore. She also experience moments where she spend £2k on clothing online orders, without remembering what she bought the next day. As I said this is an issue, that she is aware of and she is trying to do better.

I’ve been SO guilty of overconsumption. I’ve never been one to jump on trends and buy the next best thing, but I would definitely get really excited about life or I’d feel really on track with my goals, and I’d celebrate by buying a big haul of fast fashion clothes. It was ridiculous and excessive and always left me feeling hollow. I love fashion, but buying new ones every couple of months isn’t healthy or necessary.

yes these are all very good points! it is also good to remember that a lot of people are buying so many things because they are racking up debt either mindfully aware of or because they are wrapped up in consumerism or bad decisions. it's good to note that many people will never buy a designer purse and even most who will will only buy one once a year or every few years. we don't need so much stuff and even if we want it and can afford it then we should really think how much we will actually use that item instead of getting the serotonin boost from buying it and possibly look to other way to get that boost. great video! i also think a few other good things that aren't normal but on social media might seem like: buying a new car every couple of years, getting a new phone or computer every year, too much makeup/perfume/soaps/etc. that will go bad before we ever use up.

  • @flohough1870

Excellent video, especially the part of conspicuous consumption. We need to slow down and enjoy what we buy, but too many people get too wrapped up in social media and the dopamine hit. Social media can be so dangerous, we have a commercial in the US at the moment that reflects on a young girl who gets her first cell phone at 12 and as the story evolves, it's revealed that she has an eating disorder and in recovery at age 19 due to negative influence from social media. So sad, but it really shows just how social media is not always giving us healthy messages.

People need to realize that most of these people don’t own the cars they are posing in. I’ve had people taking pictures for instagram with MY FREAKING CAR. I don’t post about my life on line. And I certainly don’t want others taking photographs of MY STUFF and pretending it’s theirs. They didn’t work for it. They didn’t earn it. But they certainly want to gain followers by pretending to have other people’s things.

Anyone who gets jealous, I tell them it’s only because of what else I DON’T have- no car (I live in a big city), no mortgage (I rent), my children are grown, I rarely get my nails done, not interested in fashion, and I have cut down a lot on eating out. Overconsumption is a huge issue and this idea of lavish lifestyles in your 20’s or even early 30’s. The majority (I know their are exceptions) will never be that wealthy or have access to that excess cash flow until they’re more established. I see so many people going into debt and being obsessed with consuming to fit the “norm” to the point of affecting their overall mental health. Thanks for the video, I hope a change is coming!

It often makes you feel like your either not doing enough and/or comparing myself to other people’s lifestyle. It can be toxic and draining if not monitored. People are extremely disconnected from reality. Imagine everyone on this planet wasted resources like we do? Let's be honest, it's wasteful, expensive and at best meaningless, at worst a symptom for us feeling chased and uncomfortable. Consumerism as a way of desperately seeking out validation and a short rush. I'd like to be kind, but not only is it not normal, it's ridiculous.

It’s sad that young, impressionable people buy into social media. Social media is as fake as professional wrestling. It’s carefully curated, it’s heavily filtered, AND it’s heavily staged. Some of these influencers got exposed for taking pictures of being in a private jet on a sound stage, and they often take pictures in luxury hotel lobbies pretending that they’re staying there. Some of them will rent luxury cars or rent a mansion for the photo or video shoot.
Let’s not forget that for many of these influencers, they’re getting paid and/or getting the stuff for free (including trips) in exchange for promoting on social media.
