I'm a therapist and I work with a lot of youth and it's incredible the amount of insecurities and self-esteem issues there are out there amongst young girls who are sometimes so beautiful, yet they are comparing themselves to unrealistic beauty standards, a lot of it influenced by social media. That's why I have unfollowed a lot of influencers that I used to follow for their fashion content because it always looks so extremely perfect all the time that it makes me feel like I am lacking, even for me that I am someone who is normally not insecure in the way I look. Thanks for this video!

The one I hate is when the influencer is talking up a lower market jewelry line, saying it is their favorite, but you see their go to jewelry is actually very expensive. Also, the influencers who seem to get facials every other day or are applying so many different skincare products constantly. How have they not worn away their faces, lol? They just looove every cream.

    • @thehappyproject7117
      @thehappyproject7117 Год назад +6

A lot of them have really bad skin because they are constantly using so many different products and use filters to cover it up, if they don’t use the product and they want to make money they fake like they have been using it then they get called out for being fake and pushing a product they don’t use.
Celebrities do this to. Some even sell Free products they receive which I think is shady. I think they should give it away to friends or giveaways.

Thank you for this video! I’m old and worry about our youth being fed so much nonsense by these influencers. They are living in a fantasy world (the influencers). Meanwhile young women have easy access to all of this. Mothers don’t seem to be aware OR they themselves are easily sucked in. Imho the internet is a very dangerous place for young women, and young men, to be involved in. They are gullible……..Again, thank you for this video. ❤️

Hi Katherine. Some parents aren't aware how many female influencers are trying to keep up with their peers by becoming sugar babies through this group called "Seeking Arrangement" and it matches mostly undergraduate/college girls under 21 with men over 25 to middle aged men. These men take them to nice dinners, nice places, buy them nice things, and there's the expectation by most of these men for transactional sex in return. Parents need to watch their daughters, their daughters' friends, nieces, etc. closely.

Thank you Caitlin for another great video. There is an RUclipsr that is selling constantly stuff and her pitch is always “it’s a game changer”. All the products are “game changers” and we never get to see her using those products again. I can’t stand when people are selling me stuff and try to make it sound that it’s the best thing after the sliced bread. Recently this fake blonde woman did a sponsored video with Walmart. Obviously, she said that it’s a game changer, she wears mostly fancy designer clothes so I can hardly believe her that Walmart stuff was up to her specs.
Have a great day and keep up the good work.

I agree with you fakes and the ones that are borrowed or loaned. There are a few that do nothing but buy bags and very expensive ones I have stopped watching influencers all together. I used to watch people who buy a Hermes bag every week and many other bags and honestly after buying into the hype I have now realized the danger in it. I’m now reducing my collection and getting back on track.

Caitlin, I absolutely love your videos. As someone who is self admittedly a little bit naive about influencers being more genuine than they sometimes are, it has been brought to my attention in another video that these girls are not your friends. They may address their audience as besties, they may legitimately be very kind people, but at the end of the day they are promoting themselves, their brand, their products, etc. we have to remind ourselves that these girls are not really our friends so if they insist that you go buy some thing because it will make your life great don’t take it to heart like you would an actual friend.

Yes the fake questions are so cringe. Filters are very odd. An influencer/clogger I follow put a strong filter on her face this last video and it was so startling. She didn’t look real. You can see it with forehead wrinkles which look blurred out when they move. She is not super pretty and has bad skin sometimes but we loved her for her content and personality. Such a shame.

As a cynical, jaded, pessimistic person I think ofc, yes. People do these things. But that is with the context of having grown up through the beginning of insta and photo editing and filters. And is a big deal? Not in one case or specifically one person but when I see so many pictures or videos of this curated lifestyle and think of what a preteen girl might think it is honestly so worrying. Like, they aren't critical of anything but themselves at that age. So, yeah, great points. Love this conversation.

Why would I try to kid anyone, worst of all, myself? I take care of my skin and follow a healthy life and that shows :) It's what I try to promote and was once called an old slut with an old closet because I talk about shopping your closet. Love the video . In regards to the fake bags thing , I think it is more wide spread than anyone realizes . There is no way a lot of these young women could financially afford to purchase the amount of designer goods eg; bags , shoes as they portray and pay for a nice apt. or house that they just so happen to be renovating and normal everyday expense's unless they come from a wealthy family and have trust fund which I would say most don't . Keep the video's comin' .

Love this video and the topics you chose. I personally cannot stand the filters people use (yes, men included in this) because of their own insecurities about how they actually look in real life. Whenever I see a “perfect” complexion, I automatically feel pretty confident that a filter of some kind is being used. So very sad that people won’t accept and embrace their own individual, natural self ☹️

Thanks Caitlin this is great info! One influencer always asks her own questions. I thought it was suspect that she's always saying "hey ask me anything" and she only answers one q and it's about a product she owns or has a commission link to. It's very misleading as they are promoting something without proper disclosures to the consumer. I love supporting others but not when they are being dishonest.

When I heard about influencers, the first thing I thought about is Malala Yousafzai, former FLOTUS Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Late President Mandela etc. Its just disheartening sometimes when you realize the people that can inspire or affect you are people like Kardashians or Joe Rogan who has no substance😢

I am usually watching all those influencers channels as entertainment, as I can not afford all those luxury stuff, like designer bag and clothes, and for the makeup and skincare, I try to analyze it with critic, as I have sensitive skin, and a lot of those don't work for me, but I am afraid younger generation doesn't have such critic and analyzing thinking, as they don't know yet themselves, and are more easy to be influenced by someone they admire. And for the filters, I feel the same, after you try a filter, it is much more harder to accept yourself as you are, even if I understand all this fakeness, and feel guilty for using them in the past. And for clothes, from Zara for example, that influencers post, I look and think: hm, nice things, but when I enter the shops, I see only bag quality things, and rarely it is possible to find something good there.

    • @lanaori5097
      @lanaori5097 Год назад +1

And lately, I am starting to feel little annoyed, that influencers love everything, that they show in videos, I know, that big influencers can choose the brands and products to promote, but still, it's a lot of clothes, and especially makeup and skincare, it is not possible that they use it all.

Thank you Caitlin, this is very insightful… my bestie, she and I were just saying we’re so happy we went through our 20’s (we’re now early/mid 30’s) - with just being ourselves … literally had this convo last night with her n today saw ur video pop up … there’s a lyric by Courtney Love: “You have your youth, don’t waste your money” from song “awful” and I think her “celebrity skin” album was ahead of its time with the way Hollywood creates perceptions and now it’s done with socials like IG …
Now I’m a big time handbag n fashion lover but have come to find the necessity in things more than the straight “want” where I can enjoy but don’t need it all.
But what happens with the young girls we were saying; they change their faces with fillers to look like a filter … then they use tons of makeup that they think they need … then they use a filter and edit it for a picture?
I have no hate or shade towards this - I use a filter too sometimes, but I also take regular pics to make sure I know who I am inside and out. We have done tweaks n small things my friend n I but we look in the mirror and see ourselves…my heart is heavy for the next generation ….
Thank you for your wonderful thoughtful vidoes… human behaviour and social anthropology is a passion of mine too … so this is very interesting.
    Much ❤ from Canada

Let's not forget the youtubers who use filters in their videos. For the extreme users it's easy to tell as their facial features are so blurred out. I think the real problem is in when f.e. makeup influencers use filters when they are testing (promoting) concealer, foundation etc. Of course your skin will look perfect when you're using heavy lighting AND a filter! Too bad the viewers will never get the same result.

I don’t know the stats but I’ve heard plastic surgeons say that they get shown filters by clients to demonstrate the outcome they want from the surgery. The other insidious thing is that plastic surgeons shift all the blame onto filters and influencers and celebrities etc. And while they can make someone feel deeply insecure, one of the things that pushes people into getting unnecessary surgery in the hopes it will solve their insecurities is the social media presence of the cosmetic surgeons themselves. They basically say other people made you feel bad, I’m just helping people feel better (which is a lie). The factors that make it likely for someone to get cosmetic surgery are pretty complex, but these surgeons do intentionally create demand with their social media presence

Hey girl! I love your video, this one particularly! I happen to know someone, who's insta is filled with great pictures, posing all the time, looking gorgeous, but in reality, the person isn't like that. She always fakes everything, even lying and cheating on others, which I think bounces back already on her kids, the way she raising them, and taking "good care" of them. I think it's so miserable living like that. I ultimately hate fake people, fake bags, all these things. I have no shame about not being these "perfect" people. I think my overall health, especially mental, and being myself worth more than being under these influences and trying to live a life that's not mine and not me.

Only say this cuz there’s a K drama called Celebrity that talks about the influencers circle. I find it strange when influencers promote skincare products. Saying this is their holy grail but next month, say another brand is. Also I could think of three big influencers who do have their spouse say how lovely they smell or look with all their brand sponsored items. I have unfollowed many cuz consumerism at its worse.

Not sure if you mentioned this in another video, but I am really starting to hate the fake giveaways. It's starting to be prevalent in the automotive scene. Brand X says "Enter to win this awesome $50K car and $20K in cash" blah blah blah and then it's always some nonsense like "Minimum spend $25 for one entry." Then you see the supposed winner of the giveaway, there's no way to vet if they are real or some friend they secretly hired to appear like they won.

Interesting topic :-) To my opinon, I am taking with pinch of salt what I am watching/listening with the majority of influencers. You need to be able to identify authentic people online and not easy for sure.... I do like when content creator is "picky" with sponsorship because they are not pushing every single products for money.

I've definitely heard of the QnAs being made up. The point about the gatherings also makes sense because even in those videos of the events, for instance, an influencer would walk towards another influencer to "socialise" with them and that person would be on the phone, filming or reviewing the content they just took

I absolutely love this video!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I think with the filter thing it’s probably more the fault of the viewer as comments can be cruel!!!! As viewers we have to remember these are real people, they have feelings and insecurities and people should be kinder.

And here I thought I was the only one thinking that influencers sometimes ask their own questions on Instagram Q&As... Sometimes the questions are just too convenient and they just happened to be "making a video about this tomorrow", or something like that.

OMG I think I saw someone taking videos at AA first class. Of course they kicked him out once the actual person came in. He was acting so surprised that the first class seat was not the one he purchased, now it makes sense. He was taking all this pictures and videos, even got a champagne. People are insane. How he even got there?

As a marketing professional, you’re so right!
Unfortunately 😅 and I’m not proud of that side of how brands and influencers use some sneaky tactics to sell! I mean, sometimes we can clearly tell it’s staged but people in the comments of these staged videos don’t seem to think the same 😅

Using the filters without labels is shadyyyyyyy! Ugh. The only time I can excuse this is if the video needs extra editing between multiple saved clips, but too much of this I agree is bad for people's brains.

Or they get their Managers or friends/family to ask specific questions. A lot of others don't properly disclose sponsored videos/posts or mention that it is an AD or that a product/gift voucher was gifted to them which they used to purchase the goods they are showing in their "haul". It is super annoying. Also, some people don't understand affiliate links. I am not against them, if properly disclosed. But influencers don't. There was one occasion where a follower (of a RUclipsr) commented "I love how you are always giving us links to what you are buying/showing us that you love - it's so thoughtful". I commented that they were affiliate links and that they were linking it because they make profit off it, and not out of the goodness of their heart (although some do link things not through affiliate, but not on this occasion).

Hi Caitlin great topic. I agree. As many different vitamins i take, it should be sufficient to cover all😜 and after all, i would not trust gummies lol . My hair as well are ok, never had super long. But when i had crisis, one of those cheap conair spinning brushes 😱 i got bald spot after 3 hours my hubby tried to pull out of my hair😫 and after covid, crazy hair loss, so i used some Ayurvedic hair oils, and it worked. The company i used were super holistic, so you would feel when you put on your hair, not like those invisible serums😳🤪 Yes to proven devices. Anything i buy, i do deep research, i dont just jump. The same thing i would say, about skincare. It has to be limit. I do invest in pretty good skincare, but i will not pay 1000, or even 500, for a little jar, that claiming to lift, to erase any wrinkles. For that money, these days, injectables are on another level… no need for those synthetic fillers. PRF and PRF get, all natural , its your own stem cells. So you spend probably 1k, per treatment, here in US, but it will create collagen, and will act as filler, without looking crazy. Thats the only thing i am interested in… now when it comes to skincare, all i look for, even out skin, reduce pores, and glow glow … thats what i believe its great for. Dont believe in vitamins to loose weight, or flat stomach.if that would be so easy, hell no. I made sacrifices all my life, to keep flat😉 i still do, the only things that can chiselled you , are not good for you, in my late 20’s, i used to be in the gym like 5hrs a day, and i did used something, i was very young and very active, so yes it worked, i was super lean super toned, like crazy but what i used was some supplements that contained ephedrine, caffeine and something else, so unhealthy. But it would burn, as long as you work out. No need for that. Eating healthy is a must and then exercise, to get those abs. No miracle yes makeup got me 😂😂🤪 i the last 3 years i probably spent thousands , i could bought some nice piece of jewellery or prf or … i dont even want to think how stupid i was. But lesson learned. This year, i evaluated what aesthetics i like, and bought only very unique products. No impulsive purchases on makeup. Now i i need this technique to adapt on fashion🤪… . I agree about courses. I never get it, why ppl would pay for that. Now you gave a good point. Thats my husband, always telling me that i should teach nutrition, cooking, fitness, even being caregiver, matchmaker 🤣🤣🤣etc… and i always thought its so simple dont anyone knows that already… its so much knowledge on internet, why would someone pay me, well i think caregiver i might entertain, in some way. … because i wish would be some one, who would give me knowledge, when we embarked on that crazy journey. I learned everything as it goes. There is something as mother-wit. And of course first and foremost, glory to God, for the wisdom and strength. When i look back i still amazed how we reached here…. I was like see blood and faint type of girl, so how it is possible…. Have a blessed day🙏💗
