I’ve often thought about this when watching one of my favourite influencers. Her boyfriend often looks so “done” and miserable when they’re on vacation. The poor guy has to be taking pictures of her daily outfits and every meal is vlogged. Once you’re part of that world you have sold your soul. Perhaps some people are better suited to that work but it must feel like a huge demanding burden alot of the time.

I started making some fun shorts. In no way shape or form is it about me as a person. You can only see my taste and editing skills. Planning on talking 😅 but never ever about my privat life. Living in a vacation destination, I see the reality of this influencer “half life” often! Last week at a hotel pool I watched a woman and her partner photograph themselves for 20 minutes, just for her to be visibly upset and re take the photos..I couldn’t help but think of the post she would make it out be, how aspirational it might be to people, that she and her partner would be “relationship goals”. But seeing the reality, that she was solely focused on portraying an image of her on vacation, rather than actually enjoying the vacation with her partner, was just saddening. I’ve also seen this with girlfriends, two or more women setting up tripods in restaurants or coffee shops and pretending to be working or having fun, then cutting the video and sitting in silence editing, no real friendship or work going on there😂

I also think this obsession with making every facet of life into content could be a key reason these influencer relationships always seem to fail.. What pressure! And vanity is an UGLY trait. Can’t imagine being with someone so obsessed with self image.

The world can't make looks overly important for women and then when we get to this point with technology and social media, be surprised that this happens. We pretend to be shocked by the "vanity". But women are treated as objects and valued for mostly looks. It surprises me exactly zero percent that this mixed with social media results in this insanity.

And this is probably what’s leading to relationships failing anyway. Because these people are not bonding with each other at all. On top of that they are in a shit mood when things don’t go “as planned”. It’s getting harder to find real friends these days too.

I deplore people involving their children as part of their content.
Children cannot consent and their privacy is being totally disrespected.
These parents are essentially using their children.
They can discuss aspects of their family life without exposing their children to a world of strangers and exploiting them for views and money.

It sounds like you are just trying to justify your actions because you, in your mind, aren’t like other parents who force their children in front of the camera. I'm a Booktuber and this same phenomenon happens even when you're only monetizing a portion of your life - like a hobby. You no longer just sit down and read because you love to do so, you have to read "aesthetically" so you can get a shot for the next vlog you plan to make. Don't get me wrong, some aspects of that creative process are really fun, but it can very easily become - as you said- overwhelming constantly viewing yourself through the lens of others. Sometimes I just want to read with my messy bun I've worn all day and the sweater my daughter spit up on just before I got her to bed. That reality is hard to be brave enough to show sometimes though.

It’s actually true. I’ve been an aspiring influencer and one day I went to Santorini. I was dreaming about visiting that place for 5 years and when I finally came I felt confused. The island looked nothing like the photos on IG and it turns out that there is this one tiny spot on the island where everyone takes their pics. When we went there, I had the biggest existensial crisis of my life. I saw crowds of people in line, waiting to take a picture at some beautiful spots. Half naked girls running around with tripods in their hands happy or sad about the pics. There was this beautiful facade on one side and then you turn around and the other side looks like a dry desert with no life on it. I felt like I fell the victim and was fooled by fake insta reality. On my way back home all I could think of is how fake everything on social media is. This event trigerred me and after several more months I deleted almost all social media accounts and my life became so much better. I am probably a very very rare marketing manager who hates social media 😆

    2. A married couple in Tennessee who film every mundane thing they do, such as going to get coffee, going to the gym, finding items for their house, having a baby, a lot of it filmed in their car.
    3. Women who spend hundreds of thousands of dollars each year getting and unboxing luxury handbags and shoes.
    4. An interior designer whose home looks to be completely devoid of style
    5. A fashion influencer who dresses head to toe in logos and whose style consists of tight sweater tops, tight pants and short skirts.

I grew up with parents in church leadership, and I didn’t have any language to understand that experience until I watched the D’Amelio show. When they were talking about how being influencers and fame affected them it was the first time I ever felt understood about certain things. Like always being watched, the constant criticism, no one talking to you like an actual person, invasions of privacy, people trying to hurt you just so they can watch you snap, and then blame you for it if you do like it wasn’t their intention all along, being put on a pedestal against your will and people being mad when you fall to the same ground they’re on. You’re not allowed to be human. Even the way people who are supposed to help you deal with it all don’t, and instead treat you the same way. For them it was a therapist, for me it was “mentors”, but seeing that show was the first time I’d ever seen my experiences mirrored. There’s things they experience that I don’t or not on the same level. And there’s things about the religious aspect where it’s the other way. But the similarities scare me because I know how much it messed me up.
Also I knew from a young age that my parents having me benefited their reputation, even if they hadn’t prioritised their reputation over my wellbeing so much I think I’d still have wondered if that’s why they had me. Because even if my parents had done better other people would still have seen me through that lens and when the way other people see you inherently controls so much of your life, it controls your mind too. I imagine the kids of influencers wonder the same thing about whether they’re actually wanted as people, even by their own parents

Sure, being early to a topic or trend can be lucrative for a while, but being lucrative will bring many more to that space quickly until it becomes tired. In the end skill matters towards a good and purposeful life.
As for putting my life on the internet? No way in hell!! I’m an introverted observer and I’m ok with that.

I have a love/hate relationship with the internet. It’s good for a dopamine hit and learning new things, but there’s moments when I can’t stand everything and everyone on the internet because everything is a lie and everyone is a liar on here. It’s so soulless and it disgusts me. It makes me wish it never existed.

Wow! I have recently started unfollowing some of the influencers I have been watching since I feel like they just keep pushing products down our throats with every single video they post just to make that almighty dollar. Especially when you never see them with those said products in any of their other videos… aka “half life”. I too have thought of starting a RUclips channel, however, have decided against it for the VERY SAME reasons you have mentioned. I’m not interested in trying to blow up my life just to make content and be “relevant”.

What a way to live, even down to designer dogs. Ugh it makes me want to throw up because they think we are so stupid to believe them. Ugh over it, give me some natural run of the mill everyday life real life and then I can relate and I’m not being taken for a fool.

I know that I could never be an influencer mostly due to the comments that people so effortlessly write that just tear you apart for no reason, and in huge part that you are essentially living for other people and not for your own happiness. You've nailed it with calling it a half life, because you stop living for your own enjoyment and you start living every day of your life for other people who don't even know or really care about you that much. also I am too private of a person, I feel the details of my life should be privileged information to those around me and those who ask me about it because they care. People are so judgemental and I'm not comfortable with putting my life out there to be hacked to pieces especially when I think it's a great life. I think it's getting older and not caring about what people think of me as well, because if you don't know me why would I care what you think. so impt to make decisions for ur own well being and not feel like you have to justify it to people who largely have no empathy or appreciation of the nuance of your decisions ❤

@@abigaelrarts2257 you can get bullied and mistreated anywhere, including jobs. Not to mention being forced to develop relationships with people at the workplace. So you kinda sell yourself as well because you need to compromise your values/standards/boundaries to some point at any workplace. Because of this, from what I know, many people would rather have their own thing rather than work for someone. Regarding privacy, everyone is judging by themselves how much they are comfortable to reveal. I believe they can manage their time, when it's time for work and when not. This comes down to e.g. splitting work holidays from private holidays. It's true that probably the line between life and work is getting more blurry, but it's only down to the ability to manage it so it's improved. Every job has its disadvantages and I believe when you are free to manage your own job you already win because you can set boundaries by yourself. When you work for someone you are always dependent on their will.

"The food is COLD!!!" 🤣🤣🤣Oh my goodness I can imagine. To track my eating, I began trying to get a perfect pictures of my food, after a few minutes I got annoyed and just started eating. Spoiler alert, I never actually got one of those asthetically pleasing picture of my food, am like how do they do it🤣🤣. I was so happy to see you made this video. Lately I've been looking at more lifestyle vlogs, cause am so curious and nosey about how someone else lives their life, but am always annoyed when one of them apologies for being away from RUclips for a while. Especially if I actually like their personality, when they disappear for a while, am like "oh good, she's off living an actual life." When they come back am like, what the heck are you apologising about?
It's interesting though, because of some of your videos, I have come to realize that these "influencers" are what I would have regarded a celebrity to be back in the 90's, they entertain me, they meet unreal beauty standards etc. ... they acted infront of a camera and to some degree, I knew it was all fake and unattainable... I guess the difference with these "lifestyle" vlogs, they kinda look like everyday life and everyday people (in some instances). It's sad to know how it affects their actual life and sometimes I wonder if any of them genuinely love what they are doing🤔
Your videos snaps me back into reality a lot, thanks for making them. Would like to see a similar video on the mental health aspect of it too if you ever get a chance.

Everyone’s journey as an influencer is different based on their lifestyle habits and just their life outside of social media in general. Some people make it their whole life, and everything in their real life falls apart. Some people have great lifestyle habits and just share what they want, and it serves as inspiration, hope, and learning for others. When I was younger, I have looked up to certain people as a sister for certain things in times where I needed it, and it’s gotten me through some dark times. I also watch influencers who are positive and kind people. Honestly a lot of what has been created on social media is unhealthy, but it’s not all bad.

One of things marketerslook at to determine if an influencer is going to be chosen or not is their audience chatacteristics, not really an influencer themselves. They try to make a living by being relatable, relevant, and authentic with their audiences.

She posts a short video vlog everyday and then a longer form more professional video every week. Her everyday vlogs are my favorite because she is just doing mundane stuff and not trying to impress us at all. She'll be with no makeup on her, showing us a new cat toy for her cat and how much he likes it or gardening journey and the lack of effort to make everything aesthetic is honestly like a palate cleanse. It feels a lot more like a friend telling you about their day than someone who's trying to look aspirational for all of us humble viewers. For me, when a lifestyle influencer starts to try to make everything wildly aesthetic and you start to realize how many shots they set up just so that you can watch them sitting contemplatively looking out at the beach or lake or whatever, it starts to feel really weird and less enjoyable. Mostly I've been enjoying commentary channels lately as well as some of the classic style videos like makeup or skincare reviews. I really like upbeat, non-snotty people to watch! There are some influences out there that are hysterical and truly fun to watch or listen to. I can't be bothered to watch the ones trying to sell me a million products that will be a "game changer" in my life. Those videos make me kind of sad and irritated at the same time.

people need to understand that creating content on social media is a hobby, not a proper job. That would put things into perspective for many.

This is sort of tangential but this video and the comments got me thinking... I was watching a video on a channel that promotes/ talks about sustainability and less consumption. She said that she doesn't list out (like many creators do!) names or links of everything shes wearing etc. And that inevitability somone will ask "where are your earings from?" And she's conflicted - her whole point is to not encourage buying stuff. So, tying back to this video, IMO the viewers kind of perpetrate or are a positive feedback loop for influencers to share everything because they "want" to know everything and will ask for it if its not freely given. Now, did the influences cause that behavior or did the viewers shape the influencers behavior??? That i don't know!!

I follow no lifestyle influencers. I really enjoy people going in depth on topics they are experts on or have researched, but…I don’t really care about the private life of these people. I actually find it a bit weird to get obsessed with someone’s private life. The few times I watched vlogs, I felt like an interloper in a moment that was not meant for me. I don’t know these people and they don’t know me. I’m still figuring out what craving is being fulfilled by getting so intimately involved in the world of a stranger.

I see a big difference between “influencer” and “content creator”. I see content creators in the same category as an actor or musician where they’re not broadcasting their life. They’re focused on a specific niche, like educational content, commentary, travelogues, and fictional skits (ex: Chelsie Lynn as Trailer Trash Tammy). Influencers are broadcasting their personal life as the “lifestyle standard”.
The attention span of an average social media viewer is lower than a goldfish, which is why many influencers become flashes in the pan. Certain content trends become dated as quickly as it became popular. Also, a number of viewers are becoming jaded with all the skits that are portrayed as real situations, so the viewers get annoyed. Content creators, on the other hand, have a solid fan base, and their shelf life is much longer.

I can’t believe they got divorced. I was subscribed to her for so long and loved her videos. I hope nothing but the best for her. Honestly didn’t expect this video to break the news to me 🙃

I actually didn’t even know who she was but her footage was used because when I typed in those moments like marriage, having a baby and divorce hers was one of the first with the others showed x

Love the video, we need more content like this to really understand that it's all just a lie. No life is this perfect as they want us to believe, and it has a huge impact on people mental health.

I’d rather live my life and be content with what I’ve got in private than to go chasing an unobtainable dream and trying to make others believe it’s being achieved. It seems that there’s something empty inside of these people, which they trying to fill with likes and flexes. Nothing in the material world will ever fill that hole, they will always need more, but just feel emptier and emptier.

They feel empty because ultimately humanity is supposed to be in service of humanity, not our ego. I’m happy to have a small channel that discusses legal topics and policy. It’s so fulfilling because it’s not about me, it’s about things affecting people. I have no interest in putting out my personal life, that doesn’t help anyone.

Seems like a lot of pressure for sure. I can imagine how easy those lines get blurred of not knowing if you are doing something because you genuinely like it or making all your life decisions because of what will go viral

Oh Caitlin...you just telling about Meals you've had with Influencers...believe me: I would become a Tiger, If somebody would going me like you explained it to my Nervs and disturbing me while eating tasty Food to making Photoshots for their fu*** Channel!
OMG....How I would missing and forget my politeness...
I would really say : kiss my ..., you know what I cannot say!
I'm German, and some People say about us, that WE are "rude" - but WE (and I'm) are only honest, in a very direct Way!
This is' so respectless to others to take them out of their Comfortzone while eating!
And our "Style" is not the worst Behavior, this can make your Life MUCH BETTER !
BE sometimes a bit "German" 😂🤗👍🏻❗

Babies are money makers on social media and it's so exploitative. Kids lose their right to privacy and can't give informed consent to their lives being online.

If these influencers are so concerned with how their fans view them, then who is really doing the influencing?

This makes me think of concerts where people are filming loads of it on their phones - if I go to a concert, I want to see it irl, not through the lens of my phone. I'm thinking vlogging influencers are a bit like this. Apart from anything else it's teaching our young people that everything has to be perfect.
And as you say, there's the hate culture surrounding it all as well. I've got to the point on IG, that if someone makes a horrible comment about whoever is posting (or the subject they're posting about), I'll block them, life is too short to get frustrated about nasty, small minded people!
