I did stop like you in 2015. we are often moving due to business and i was so fed up to pack containers...
I went down from 200 Bags and 300 Pair of shoes over time to 50/100, then more and more - now owning 5/20.
I invested the money I got from reselling into the best of the best in classic stuff... same for everything in the household... invested in travels and also in my "bank account" ...
Having a great time without any worries, heading to great places, eating out every night, every week Michelin... don't work anymore, move with my husband with 12 suitcases and trunks...
I wake up when I want, do what I want at any given time.
And meanwhile can watch videos or browse stores online just for fun without feeling the need of buying and never go into stores when travelling bc you get everything everywhere and there are other things to do

My issue isn't with buying luxury/designer stuff. It's that I buy an over abundance of affordable stuff. But if you buy 100 things for $1 each, it adds up to $100. That's the problem. I feel like I'm always unsatisfied with my wardrobe and I think if I just add these things, it'll be perfect. But it never is, because sometimes I have nothing to match something with, or eventually I'll get bored of it and won't want to wear it anymore. I just buy way too much random stuff and gadgets too.

      @busibuthelezi 7 месяцев назад +2

It was really helpful for me to get honest on the types of things that actually suit my body and things I like. For example, I don’t like the way drapery tops look on me, I feel like I spend all day adjusting the top to sit just right. Now I will buy a silk shirt that has a more structured construction & I find more flattering but has the soft feminine feel that I was after.
Also reading the style books. They really help. Trinny London is a fantastic resource for finding things that suit you and “wear it well” by Allison Bornstein is also a good read.

They were the height of unfashionable when I was growing up in the 80s to mid- 90s. Now I love the look. Good for us, being comfy instead of developing bunions and hammertoes, haha.

I went loafer crazy in 2023. Love them all. Realized that they replaced my comfort shoes ( Skechers) and elevated my outfits with a casual sort of preppy look. All very comfortable too.

Shopping addiction is hard to break! I’m looking to do a low to No buy year and I’m gearing up for it by winding down now. I want to pay off my small amount of credit card debt (about $1900) and a loan from my dad for when my cat needed emergency surgery during the height of the pandemic, and actually start saving. I am saying no to:
-ANY new clothes because I have more than enough of everything, and don’t anticipate my winter jacket breaking (the thing I only have one of in the warmest parka level) anytime soon.
-nail polish. I like nails…but I have a ton, and not much time to do so
-Books outside of a couple of authors pre-orders I have in (and I am a huge bookworm). I have a local library that carries just about everything I could want, plus 100+ books at home I haven’t read yet.
-music unless required for my teaching (I’m a music teacher)
-Craft supplies unless someone orders a project I don’t have the materials for. Especially yarn. I have enough yarn for 10-20 years in the house
-Stickers, which I guess also fall under craft supplies, but I mostly use them to have fun with my daily journal
-Journals! Have enough for several years
-Sheets and any sort of bedding. Have enough, and none is looking to wear out anytime soon
-Most hygiene products as I have several body wash and hand creams unused, as well as several bars of fancy nice soap. I also am not allowed to buy any new reusable female products as I have more than enough in my stash (must say, having invested in them though, it is nice not having to buy pads and tampons anymore)
-Shoes. With the possible exception of winter boots, as mine as starting to wear down a little bit, but probably will last this winter.
-be more intentional with groceries. Look at cupboards and the freezer before buying anything.
-I will still allow myself to get Starbucks or Tim Hortons or a coffee from 7/11 on my way home from my morning teaching job, but if I want it-I have to walk to go get it. No Uber eats or skip the dishes allowed!
-Dvds or shows off of iTunes. I have enough for quite some time.
-Try to only get my cats’ supplies when there is a sale on. I’m already pretty good at that, but I’d like to be even better with it. Speaking of cat things….they also don’t need any new toys or other non food/litter/dental care/vet care products right now. Got them one on Amazon during Black Friday days, and that‘s enough.
-towels, table linens, anything of that nature. Have enough. Even Dollarama level purchases add up!
-Cleaning services for my house. I’ve used it once or twice in the past when my muscles were flaring with an autoimmune condition, but that has resolved itself (hopefully forever) and I am perfectly capable of doing all cleaning myself, which I really do prefer anyways.
-Office supplies unless critically needed (such as printer ink). Have enough pens, just bought a huge thing of paper, etc.
-Working to fine tune what supplements I actually need/benefit from.
-right now, most cleaning supplies as I bought on bulk package buy a while back and won’t need most for quite some time. Exceptions being laundry detergent/sanitizer, and I need some metal cleaner for keeping my kitchen sinks as clean as I can and have run out.

If you are in the US (which is what I know) - you can get literally any book (if it is in any US public library or US public univiersity library) on what is called "interlibrary loan". it will be sent to your local library, checked out to you, for you to pick up. note loan times are shorter and late fees can be high ($1 a day at mine).

I need to no longer buy clothes for a long time - full stop! I think it's taken me a very long time to realise that I am no longer a city girl with a city life. I keep buying city girl clothes. The reality is that I live in the country, walk my dog in muddy puddles and rainy weather, and work with my hands making skincare, so I'm usually covered in oils. Not the scenario for pretty clothes. Yet I keep buying cashmere jumpers, beautiful bags and tailored trousers that hang in my wardrobe; unused.

This is a really difficult concept. I work from home and not in an office anymore. I'm struggling with the transition bc I don't need the work attire. Yet, I still like that style. I mean, where do I even go?? Walk my dog, errands, some dinners, and back to errands, lol. A basic quality wardrobe will do. Yet, influencers who also stay home will make you feel you need a full glam wardrobe.

I have personally stopped buying too much makeup especially NUDE /NEUTRAL eyeshadows...they look good and what I use the most but most of them are similar and the difference truly never reflected on eyelids.
Also I have stopped buying unnecessary skincare Lipmssk, sheetmask, eye bag mask

And my skin looks very much the same like when I used to use 7 stel routine.

It's getting harder and harder to resell anything. I used to be able to sell things fairly easily on Ebay but now there are so many other sites, plus FB groups and Buy Nothing groups, and a surplus of THINGS out there that now my stuff sits unsold for months, even years. Even high end stuff is really difficult to sell unless you cut the price extremely. Just not worth it. I prefer to use my money to travel, keep my cats in vet costs ($$$!), and what I need to survive so I don't have to work a lot.

I've read that 5 new pieces of clothing is an ecological amount of clothing per year. We know that fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world so I think everyone should really consider long and carefully weather to buy new clothes.

Oh dear God, grocery prices are nuts here in the U.S. I’m being much more careful what and how much I buy now. I do still have my 21 year old twins that live at home, so they will usually eat the excess, but still. It’s too expensive to waste any food these days. I’m Gen X and pretty much all I wear is Birkenstocks for shoes. I did get a pair of Blundstone boots this year for winter. They were very expensive for me, but I love them. I’m with you on trying things on. I won’t buy if I can’t try on. I’m quite small and most shoes don’t fit well, I wear a 3.5 in AU size, that’s the Blundstone size I got. And I’m short so pants are a struggle. I’m also buying only natural fabrics now. They just last longer and feel better to me. Oh and I’m on a no bag buy as well. I had a bag problem too 😅. No designer thank God, can’t afford them, but still even too many cheaper bags is still a problem. Great video ❤

Hi Caitlin! I’ve been following you for a while now and have enjoyed your journey of realization regarding shopping as an addiction. I feel like we have both been going through this evolution together, so thank you.😘 I’m still buying, but much MUCH less after acquiring so much crap during Covid, I realized I was a shopping addict. Also blowing through my savings. Now I only buy things I absolutely LOVE and know I will use. Also prices of luxury goods have gotten insane with all the price hikes and lack of quality, it’s really turned me off. I see others are taking notice as well. Vacation shopping I can also relate to…expecting to buy something, but why? Girl you are speaking my language, and just loving how you give new perspectives on how ridiculous our addictions once were. Glad to see you are grounded in your newfound identity as someone who recognized their addiction, worked through it, and is now helping others. Much love ❤️ Kelsey in Texas🤠

Lipstick! I bought none for two years during the pandemic but it’s slowly creeping in again and I don’t need any. The ones I own are perfect for me and are beautiful formulas from Chanel, Dior and Chantecaille but the problem is they are an affordable treat to self. I stopped buying huge bottles of perfume too. I have a summer and a winter staple, 50ml lasts 2 years. If I really fancy a new one I buy the 10 ml version because that’s enough for a season and next season I’ll no doubt want something else.

I bought so many clothes and shoes and bags from good brands that I couldn't wear them all. We moved and I saw how many things I had. So I decided that I have to wear every item of clothing for this winter. What I don't wear will go away. What is too small or too big will go. Bad fabrics or bad cuts will also go away.
Now I choose what to buy with precision.
Three years ago I bought my rottweiler dog. I walk her a lot and I don't need too many pretty clothes for that. My needs have changed. Now I want my clothes to be practical and comfortable. I definitely dress well for work and try to wear the most of what I have. 😀

    Caitlin , Great Channel!!
    As a former shopaholic….
    Here’s a little advice!!!
I had to learn how to grow outta of this mindset that spending
400.00 or more on one item somehow makes me better than the others 😳🤦🏾‍♂️😳 .
    Talk about immaturity 🤦🏾‍♂️
Ok so that’s the 1st break from wasting my hard money on
    Silly , Kiddy , novelty items !!
    Ok , here’s the real deal !!
Before I realized buying a home
Is way more important then buying clothes , bags , cars , etc etc !!!
I was like so many people….
I just want to look like I have money - I live in an apartment
But I dressed like I was doing better in life 🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️
    I stopped shopping for
Designer clothes and invested my money in property.
My money is better spent investing my capital in assets that appreciate ( overtime)
Vs tossing my money away on items that I can’t sell yrs later !!
Anywhoooooo , again, great channel, keep up the good work!

Either I order clothes and shoes online and then return 50% of those, or I buy beauty products, or I buy groceries and then throw away so much, or I buy pet products, or I buy my hobby supplies, OR (when I finally decide that I need a no buy month) I still spend money on kindle… I would read with such speed and in August I actually spent a lot of money on books, buying a new one every third day... For the life of me I do not remember one book I read… But, the problem persists. That urge to buy, whatever… to spend money… then the cycle starts again, same order… I struggle and I know what I should do and have all the tools needed to stop this madness, yet, results are not there… Thanks for your video, I actually feel better after putting all this in writing ❤

Things I no longer buy (due to lifestyle changes and cancer recovery) > 1. Heels 2. Designer clothes 3. Really expensive makeup like Hourglass palettes 4. Excessive clothing like 10 pairs of flare pants in different fabrics 5. Anything on 'sale' just because the price is soooo affordable eg Boxing Day sales 6. Christmas presents for ppl I stopped shopping after covid and after I got sick 7. Excessive groceries 8. Decorative items for my house 9. Storage containers (I started decluttering since 2020 and tried not to bring items home unless I have space to put things away without trying to buy storage containers). 10. Pretty work clothes > I used to work in the fashion industry so I felt the need to look my best everyday. Now I work in a medical center, I am in scrubs all day long...😅

I will say the running theme with the things I no longer buy are anything that I won't actively use in my life. If I can't imagine using it frequently (and gladly), I know it will sit there, take up space, and make me feel guilty. I think I used to be prone to buying impractical shoes for my "fantasy self". Never anything designer or particularly expensive, but the cost still was very significant.

I try and stay away from Instagram Fashion/outfit inspo accounts I know that these posts are staged but at the same time I can fall for it and have done in the past…I try and stick to only buying pieces that fit my lifestyle and that can fit into what I already own and tbh have built up a wardrobe now that coordinates with most of what I have so can put multiple outfits together… at nearly 40 I have finally figured out ‘my style’ saying all that two days ago while ill I went down a rabbit hole and got involved with posts about winter coats and ended up buying a gorgeous winter wool coat thinking about it now although extremely practical it won’t fit my lifestyle so will try it on when it arrives but will be returning would love to keep it but it isn’t in keeping with my rule for myself unfortunately did however buy an oversized blazer which I think will fit my lifestyle xx

I the luxury influencers really drilled the idea of having to buy a designer item on holidays. I felt pressure to buy something designer last time I went to france. I guess you could say I did but only somehow ended up with things I love and use. I used the budget tracker you suggested all year and its been really eye-opening. I've set myself a yearly spend budget for next year. Im getting there. One of my worst categories used to be going out dresses and walkable heels. I used to have 100 pairs of shoes and would look for dresses all the time to buy. I feel like I have enough rn. I did buy a couple for my birthday this year but havent looked or gone overboard.

I have become like you. I’m no longer in search of designer stuff. I have way too much as is and I don’t need anything. I literally told my husband to buy me jigsaw puzzles and embroidery kits cuz those are the only things I want for Christmas. lol 🤷‍♀️

I was buying a different purse every time I was at a second hand store from the time I started using a purse until two years ago when I found a purse that I loved and it was $50, the matching wallet was $20. The most I had ever spent on a purse and wallet. I have not purchased another purse since. I have purchased a Fanny pack and a metal wallet to protect my cards for when I’m not using my purse.

Going through the same thing! Especially regarding shopping while on holiday. I’m really focused on what I need. Not saying I won’t buy luxury while on vacation anymore but just doing it with more intention.

  • @GildedFashion

The holiday token purchase is a real problem for me. I often wish I could find a purchase to commemorate the trip. But fortunately they don’t have to be big purchases. I’ve come down to one item per trip which is great! No designer label necessary.
And I no longer scroll shop on fb mkt place, or shop in town because I’m bored. I am finally aware I have enough for my wardrobe and enjoy using old items and restyling them more adventurously!
Plus I travel and move a lot I can’t lug so much around. Only hand carry will do me fine. Save a tonne in lugguage fees and things I didn’t buy due to weight limits.

I really appreciate your anti-haul inspiration! I no longer buy office-y work clothes or heels, and like you I no longer shop while on vacation. My work went full virtual, so I don't need the office clothes. And my feet now hate heels with a passion. I spend my days living in what most people would consider outdoorsy chic. Merino wool tops, leggings, and ski sweaters because I can. And when I do have to leave home for work, I wear a uniform of sorts. Polo, dress pants, done. I have so much more time and money now!

Like a lot of things, I think the luxury handbag era has passed. It's not practical cost wise (most of the bags aren't practical use wise either), and as you get older you don't need status symbols to prove your worth.

I stopped buying expensive things unless I know I will get a long term bang for my buck.
I am totally over the designer names. They are too too expensive and the quality doesn't match the price.
In fact, the actual reason I have no interest in names like Chanel or Lv is because they have become rather common. I see them on RUclips. I see them on most reality TV shows, and I see them as basic boring now. It's terrible to call them that, but they are very common.
So, I buy handmade bags local if possible and something that isn't common looking

Agree 100% with you over the whole collaboration thing. It's just a cash grab and too many people with FOMO. I don't have a particular area I'm not trying to buy in, but I am trying to buy less in general. I've caught myself a few times recently thinking "I should go here/there and go shopping." And then I think about it and realize I need nothing, so what is the point?!

I grew up in Bevery Hills. No one had "designer" anything. It is massively overpriced (like by a factor of 10 or 20 times). And everything is designed by someone, we just usually don't know the name of the person. OTOH I was looking at very inexpensive dresses (you know the companies - they have the ads on youtube) and there were some absolutely gorgeous designs - elegant and interesting cuts, piecing, beautiful drape, the prints were interesting, not fussy. I don't know what the actual garments are like but the designs I saw were superb.

I usually have the same issue on holiday or traveling with buying .. We only have a saks with a small LV boutique here so when I go to like Chicago ( I was there last week in fact ) the first place I went was the fashion mall .. I visited it twice this time tho and I didn’t buy a bag !!! I’m so proud of myself 😂 I did get some mini Uggs but they were sold out online and everywhere ..I’ve been looking for these forever so to me that is not frivolous.

It's funny you mention not buying things you can't try on or check out in person - I never ended up buying much designer stuff pre-covid because I would see it online, love it, go try it on, and instantly be like "eh, not for me." But in 2020, I didn't have that ability! So I ended up just obsessing even more over things until I bought them. Since the world has opened back up, my buying greatly decreased. I did buy a couple of designer bags this year but one of them was very practical and is used daily and the other is a long-time wishlist item, and is the only thing currently on my designer wishlist. Well not anymore because I ordered it as my Christmas present. So now I currently don't have a designer wishlist and that's ok!

Love U❣ In the past when I shopped I always bought 2+ of everthing. It just felt right to get the shirt or dress i loved in multiple colors, like it validated the purchase somehow to love it enough that I would have to have it in multiple colors. Whenever my mom was with me she would say, "You can only wear one thing at a time." Obviously yea, but when I would buy two wool coats from J-Crew in different colors I would hear her saying this and it seemed ridiculous to purchase both. Or when I would buy 3 cocktail dresses at one time?! When I was younger I went out a lot... but still not enough to justify buying 3 seasonal cocktail dresses in one afternoon...?!?

yes same here. i bought a Burberry scarf for nearly 400 pounds but I hardly wear it. I've noticed my mind-shift change because it's just a label we are paying for which is most of the time overpriced. its not worth the money at all. to impress people i don't even like. im concentrating on saving now for my emergency fund. i feel like with the cost of living crisis, an emergency fund is paramount.

for me, i buy what brings me joy, and not because of fomo. people don't realize that they're buying something not because that would give them "joy" but it's because of a happiness that came from the fear of missing out. it may not be material, like food or travel, sometimes people splurge their money irresponsibly because they want what others have and that temporary or superficial happiness that comes with it. as an early millennial i never got into heels. hahaha. sneakers and oversized shirts are something that i grew up with, so i never felt it went away or came back, because i never moved away from wearing converse, nike's and adidas. tbh, i never get the mindset of wearing heels and punishing my feet for the sake of fashion. 😂
