I hope they remake it someday, confirm Dante's attitude in the game is due to his loss of purpose, and keep the characters but expand the dialogue and bring the combat to proper modern DMC standards.
I think erasing it is also a bad idea, we should elevate it so that it can be loved like the rest.

It's also worth noting that during the time period DMC2 takes place, not only had Dante 'supposedly' killed Vergil for good, but he'd finally achieved what he set out to do years prior, Avenge his mother. Achieving your life's ambition must leave you pretty directionless afterwards. Add this to the fact that Trish had left him and gone solo during this time period as shown in the anime. It makes perfect sense for Dante to feel pretty depressed. I like to think him becoming a pseudo-mentor figure to lucia managed to pull him out of his funk and encouraged him to reconnect with Lady and Trish.

I think dmc2 deserves a remake. There is so much potential especially with how it fits into the current timeline. It'd be a chance for them to actually finish the game and give it depth. The development of dmc2 was rough. We dont even know who the original director is. It really needed better staff and more time in the oven.
The setting is really unique compared to the other games with it mostly being gothic and dark cityscapes. I think the RE engine could make it look amazing.
Why remake a game thats already perfect when you can give a lackluster game a second chance?

Things I love about Devil May Cry 2. Im not starting in one place, going to a new place, then going back to the first place. It started costumes that can all be on one file. Dont have to start all over again. If you put in the Super Mode cheat the drawback was no regenerative health. Started Bloody Palace. Started Chapter Select. Where Devil May Cry 1 started changing devil arms mid game, Devil May Cry 2 started changing guns mid game. Started shooting in two different directions. Could shoot rain like. Created the Majin/Sin Devil Trigger mode.

The only reason Capcom put DMC2 after 4 was so that players could skip it, which btw feels really scummy to me cuz they're the ones who decided to launch a sequel to capitalize on the first game without even asking the director of the first game, suddenly they're acting like "no we're with you guys, we also think this game sucks, please", anyway it never made sense to me that DMC2 would take place after 4, what Dante got younger out of nowhere? I think DMC2 had a lot of good things going for it! it was the first game to give you very different DT transformations, it gave us a great female character who was also playable and I wish they'd bring her back, and I really like Dante's look in the game.
I think what held it back was Capcom being super weird about how they handled sequels to their new IPs at the time. Both DMC and Onimusha got sequels that were completely different from their first games, because they were given to totally different development teams. Not to mention DMC2's original director leaving the project partway through. Its honestly pretty impressive that DMC2 turned out to be any good at all.

I will say, I think Devil May Cry 2 has the best aesthetics in the series. That's purely subjective of course, but I just can't get enough of its style that's like a cross between an old school anime and the cover art of a metal album. It's so over the top edgy that it actually comes off as very comedic, like you just know someone had a blast drawing everything. It's like an 8th grade boy's notebook doodles were turned into a video game, and I daresay I don't think I've seen any other game quite like it.

There were so many things I appreciated about this game, from Dante's downer and quieter personality after going through what he just experienced with Vergil.
The enemy designs aesthetic wise were really amazing and well thought through. They really looked Demonic and otherworldly. I honestly prefer DMC 1 and 2's enemy designs to DMC 3's(despite DMC 3 enemies working better in gameplay)
Also, the gothic style was toned down from DMC 3 onwards in my opinion. You could take almost any level from DMC 2 and it wouldn't be out of place in a horror game.
I also like the story, characters, and the little twist at the end with the coin flip still shows Dante is cocky, but true to his character.
Finally, I'm glad they kept the theme going on through all these games of "all this crazy sh*t going on, and it's just another Thursday for Dante".
This game wasn't the best, but what it did well, it went all out.
(PS. DMC 2 might just have the best Dante outfit in my opinion)

One thing I can add at the top of my head is that not only was Arius the first human antagonist introduced into the series, he was also the most competent. It was revealed that Agnus from DMC4 used to work for the Ouroboros corporation. There has been multiple statements in the DMC lore that Demonic power corrupts humans weather it is in the presence of demons, demonic items like the devil arms etc. Arius was able to harness demonic energy and use it very well. He was able to summon a demon powerful enough to push mid game DMC2 Dante into going devil trigger (That is mostly a power scaling thing that I'm not gonna try to write an essay explaining that here. Plus Arius' company could've provided the world the means to be able to fight demons.

  • @bigcat9765
    @bigcat9765 2 года назад +6

Gosh! The gameplay of DMC2 is such an interesting subject though? Because it's a huge precursor to later games!
DMC2 gave us the moves that eventually became the Trickster and Gunslinger style. (Jumping into the air and then shooting your guns downward. Or standing on the ground and shooting each gun in a different direction. Using the spare face button as a dedicated improved dodge roll over the standard lock and and press jump while holding sideways. Running up and along walls for increased mobility.)
And DMC2 gave us a powered up Devil Trigger form, with its own special attacks and abilities. Some of which are strangely similar to the Sin Devil Trigger abilities seen in DMCV!
I know that all of these abilities are underdeveloped, and the game is badly balanced around them, badly balanced even to the point where many players just did not know that some of these moves even existed in the game! But it's clear that these ideas were the basis for what eventually became core to later games in the series.
I don't know if I want to see DMC2 get a remake though. Can it even be remade? Do you keep Dante depressed or make him fun again? What does that mean for the wider fiction? How much can or should the gameplay be revised? Would Dante keep his Majin Devil Trigger? What does THAT mean for the fiction? I changed my mind. I'd love to see a remake of this game, because then that would mean lots of new discussion about where or even if it fits into the series. My favourite theory has always been that DMC2 is an offshoot timeline where Vergil never had a son and never escaped hell, so Dante is completely alone and has nothing left but to go to hell! I'd love to see what would happen to that theory if we got a remake.

Devil May Cry 2 has some interesting ideas and themes.
Sadly the gameplay and presentation are holding it back. It is, as you said, unfinished.
Lucia is by far the best element of this game.
I like her human and devil trigger form and I'd love to see her in either a remake (like Resident Evil 2 and 3) or have her back in Devil May Cry 6.
Maybe she will even appear in the new animated series. She deserves at least that.
Also something I just realized watching your video: Dante has white hair, and red and black clothing; Lucia has red hair, and white and black clothing
Since you mentioned the DmC Reboot (in text only), I would be interested to hear your opinion of the Reboot.
While I understand why fans disliked the story and the characters in that game, we have to remember that the Dante in that game is essentially a pre-DMC3 Dante (in an alternative universe).
The Vergil's Downfall DLC started with Vergil dying from his wound from his fight with Dante, and ends with him being strong enough to kill all his inner demons which in his mind hold him back, and the armies of hell kneeling to him.
This DLC really sets up a DmC 2 which in my opinion could have had some elements of DMC3.
I still think it's possible for DmC 2 to happen, even with Ninja Theory being part of Microsoft now. I'm sure they wouldn't have an issue with the game even being released on PlayStation.
Since multiple games from Microsoft already are on PlayStation and Microsoft even said that they will keep releasing games from the Blizzard acquisition on PlayStation.
And I think the DmC and DMC games are different enough for both to co-exist.

Great video! I was just waiting for a video with a title like this to show up in my recommended feed 😂 I didn't expect you'd cover the topics you did though. Fascinating stuff. I always admire when people are able to find the good in games that are considered bad by the majority, especially to the extent you do in this video. Definitely gonna subscribe.
I personally didn't have any fun with DMC2, not least because of the whole game feeling like wasted potential, but regardless this is a really great analysis of DMC2s distinct art style/inspiration... I don't know if this makes it a good game though. If anything it just cements that feeling of wasted potential all the more for me.
If the game had the same combat as DMC1, better bosses and enemy AI, that would fix up a lot of the issues for me. I would love to see a return to the art style of the first two DMC, if not a flat out remake of 2.

I remember by experience with DMC2 when it came out! I sold it and played DMC1 again. Years later I tried again and then realized I had missed nothing because it doesn't matter how good the story and subtext is. It's a hack n' slash game. It should be fun to play and not put me to sleep with boring design and somehow even more boring cutscenes.
At the end of the day they tried to be edgy without realizing why everyone loved the first game so much. That's why DMC3 is so awesome and kinda set the standard for future titles. They just did the opposite of DMC2.

Excellent analysis, and great presentation and narration as well. Along with your other DMC videos, I have to say, this is literally the best content on DMC that I've ever seen.
And good on you for choosing to focus on DMC2, because there really is more than meets the eye and the devs deserve credit for all the thought and work they put into the themes and symbolism and references.
DMC has a bad rap for being a "dumb" action series, which I have tried in vain to convince people of being otherwise over the years. Your content makes that latter argument much more persuasive, even more so because of your self-control when it comes to overreaching. It really lays bare the fact that, actually, the devs intentionally included these deep themes, symbolism, references and so on, but people only see what they are primed for by their expectations. (I wish Capcom would have continued this trend, but I personally feel that they dropped the ball after DMC3).
I tried for years to get that point across, and this is the kind of content that I would have loved to have been able to create back in the day (albeit with more granularity as is my style). You're a DMC fan after my own heart, and it would have been nice to have collaborated with you back when I was in the fandom. In any case, I'm glad I get to relive that old passion vicariously through the fruits of your labor, and keep up the great work.

The gameplay is the primary issue. Just look at what you can accomplish with DMC1 and 3 gameplay, and the bosses of those games, the compared to DMC2. The level design can also be a complete nightmare to traverse through.
This point is more subjective, but people like a more 'fun' Dante than the overly serious Dante in DMC2.
I really don't know how you can't understand all the hate it's received. I started this series with DMC2, and it does have a special place in my heart, but I can recognize when things are of low quality, no matter how much I personally like it.

In case of DMC2 it's both. I refuse to bow down to the court of popular opinion! Well it actually tried stuff such as making dodging easier thus you dont suffer from dumb camera angles, made a sick outfit for dante and and a sweet customizable devil trigger with an additional majin form, it introduced the rebellion for the first time, introduced moves such as double jump, bullet rain and shooting each weapon to different directions, made weapon and gun switching a lot more easier, it also had different sword combos as well(but they forgot to add a tutorial for each of em for whatever reason), wanted try something different by making dante serious just this once so yeah it wasnt really bad when you look at this way. However we cant ignore some facts such as bad story, difficulty being too easy, huge vast areas where you run for a couple minutes doing nothing, fucked up with how op guns were when they actually tried to make him as powerful as how they were cannonically shown in cutscenes, chopper boss fight and stupid minions like tanks and etc. If they fix these problems, maybe remove a couple boss fights, add new enemies, fix the story difficulty and how weapons work ı m pretty sure ıt ll be one heck of a remake just like re4
Edit: when it comes to lucia maybe just like in dmc5 they should give us an option for wheter ee wanna play with dante or lucia on specific missions.

This was a great video. On paper, it seems DMC 2 had something going for it, the art and writing team evidently put in genuine effort. The technical side is where the game fell, mostly due to a rushed schedule, and because of that, the art and writing didn't get to be fully realized. It's still a bad game, but it's nice to see that they at least tried with that they had, instead of the rushed cash-grab many think it is.

I'm gonna go out on a limb about this game. I think the hate is kind of unjustified. Now, before anyone tries to rip me to pieces for saying that, here's why I think the hate comes off as completely unjustified: I'm not saying the game is perfect, no game is, ever, but the way I see it, the hate people seem to have for DMC 2 is basically them saying this: "This is trash because we don't like it. If it's good enough for us, it's good enough for you." I know that sounds so oddly specific, but fanbases can work on some real bullshit logic that just sounds better in their heads.
Saying a game is bad because you don't like it isn't good enough, and there are sadly a lot of good, or at least decent games, that fall into that same category a lot. I won't name them here, because that's not the point I'm trying to make. Point is, fanbases have really weird mindsets when it comes to games in franchises that are considered 'black sheeps'. Sometimes, opinions will be too embellished for me to believe them.
Edit: Something I forgot to bring up, Dante is a bit more lax and less chipper in the 2008 anime as well, which takes place in between DMCs 1 and 2, so blame that if you don't like how Dante is portrayed in 2.

Finally someone defense this part of DMC. And it is my FAVORITE! I played all parts and a lot of times!
This part has much more improvements from first one than depravations.
    And here is improvements:
    - much more quality fighting system. Because you actually always can avoid/dodge attacks. Yes, first one is a bit more difficulty but more unfinished, because it is pretty bad when you cant avoid attacks. In this part it is really worked out good. Yes, because of that it is a bit simplified, but it is high quality.
    - improvements in movement system. run on walls, dodge in any direction is very good stuff. And guys, the reason why 4th part doesn't have that in Nero is most likely because you reported that dmc 2 is bad, so we loose a lot of good mechanics from that part. This part is really close to souls like games, and it is times of PS2.
    - devil trigger is much better. You don't waste huge part of it during activation, it is wasted much less when you only walk, and it consumes more on attacks. Also flying system much better, you can change position vertically, what is really good too.
    and deprevation:
    - the only one for now I can say, and this is little bit less variation of attacks then in others. But lets be honest, first one has not much more attacks too and everyone loves that part 😁

    • @LeonardoStupidKenway
      @LeonardoStupidKenway 2 месяца назад

U could just avoid attacks by jumping in dmc1, whoch was enough. Also, a downgrade is that instead of improving on the consistent delay combos from dmc1, they decided to add this weird directional combo system that really didn’t work as well. The balancing is also awful, compared to the first game. The guns are almost always the best options. The weapons are also a downgrade. Dmc1 had 3 swords, 4 if u count yamato but that’s omly if u play with LDK costume, but atleast it had ifrit. Dmc2 has just swords. Also, instead of unlocking moves throughout the game with red orbs, that has been replaced with a generic and worse level up system. Oh yeah and the level design is worse aswell. Instead of the tightly crafted levels from the first game, most of the levels in dmc2 are these big empty forgettable spaces. The enemy design is shit aswell. They are super passive and are just so unfun to fight against. Oh yeah and the attacks just feel worse. The animations are worse and much slower (expecially stinger, what the hell did they do to you). The only positives are the devil trigger and without dmc2, we wouldn’t have dmc3, dmc4, DmC and dmc5.

I don't think this video explains why Devil May Cry 2 is a good game. I think for the majority of people, a good game is one that is actually enjoyable and is well made gameplay wise, especially for such a gameplay focused game like this. There wasn't much you defended about the absolute core that determines the good or bad of a game for most people, so I don't think this was a defense video in any way.
However, if you had called this a 'Hidden References in Devil May Cry 2 You Didn't Know About' or something along those lines, it would have been FAR more fitting to what you actually covered in the video. And trust me, what you covered in the video was interesting. Really interesting. I actually didn't know so many of the environments actually had inspirations like that. It's also amazing how much research and knowledge of your own went into this to make this video. The story is passable enough I guess. It’s ultimately a meh game with good ideas but bad execution. I’d certainly rather play those other “bad” games over it haha. Well, except for FFII I guess. Regardless of how I feel about it though, it’s always great to hear people talk about why they love stuff. It was definitely a treat to learn about all of this implicit stuff in the game, even if I don’t think it saves the game overall. A remake for this game would definitely be best.
