I was watching your video yesterday and suddenly remembered that I bought a 3rd party GPS receiver from ebay some years ago. I planned to use it for my D850. I was not using it so mutch so it stayed hidden in one of my older camerabags. Bur now I have tested it on my Nikon Z8. It works fine and inserts EXIF files to both RAW and JPG photos. The manufacturer is Aokatec and the type of GPS is AK-G1s GPS Receiver.
Nikon Z8 can receive GPS data from an Android phone through the SnapBridge app, which allows you to transfer location information from your phone to the camera, essentially "geotagging" your photos even if the Z8 itself lacks built-in GPS functionality.
For the Z5, is there a way to have gps data synced to the photos automatically as they are being taken or is there no other option besides sinking the photos to a gpx file afterwards?
Nikon UK removed the in-body GPS function a few years ago. It was left on by mistake. You can use the Snap Bridge app on your phone or an external device like Nikon's GP1
Nikon really dropped the ball when it comes to GPS in their Z Series 😢 That's the reason I switched to Sony... A GPS receiver chip is dirt cheap and uses minimal power. Nikon should have let the customer decide if they want it ON or OFF...
I understand your frustration, I suppose it's about profit, and unit sold. I'm hoping the Z7iii to have GPS, and disappointed that the Z8 was missing this functionality
