Always fascinating and a pleasure to see you do your “magic”. Very helpful comparison and as always fantastic images. Thanks, Richard, keep ‘em coming!
Great comparison between the II and the III! You demonstrated that those primarily focused on astro photography don't need to spend a huge amount of money. I commend you for using real-life examples, as I agree that these are the best recommendations to offer and, more importantly, to show. Great photos as always! :)
Thanks Alan. I think the reference charts are useful but there are so many people who treat them as the be all and end all of all knowledge, without ever taking any images.
Fair Dinkum mate.......funny how the correct exposure works better, well said Richard. Having had the pleasure to watch years of your video's and meeting you and your lovely wife at your amazing course, you are one of the few I can count on for saying it how it is. Great video, great photos as always, I believe the Z6iii is a great all rounder, now that is has the auto focus features of the 8 and 9 which will come in handy for many people and I know you will make great use of it. Until we meet again have a great weekend.
Superb again! The aurora this week, it would have been awesome if we hadn't been so spoiled in May! It was soo cold - but it felt like 10% more stars in the sky due to that, and with the meteor shower going off, it was like shooting stars every few minutes
Brilliant review as always Richard. Can’t agree more about the Z6 II, still an absolute beast for astrophotography and as a landscape photographer I definitely can’t justify the cost of the Nikon Z6 III when the mark II and even mark I are still doing the job. BTW that puddle shot is special. Well done!
You probably need a power bank with a PD rating. Mine is an Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh PD 45W with 60W PD Charger, not cheap.Excellent video , my freind. If i had the cash i would change systems.
Just got my new to me z6 ii and a new Viltrox 16mm, but the clouds have not cooperated all summer, too humid so when it cools off at night clouds form. So instead I am watching all you videos to learn more. Thanks for the hard work. Cheers from the New Jersey Shore.
Hi Richard, yet another super informative video. It was really interesting. I have the Z8 but do think the Z6s are slightly better specifically for nightscapes. It was interesting to see you were only using the LR denoise slider, do you use either the AI denoise function or DXO / Topaz ? Maybe a video specifically on noise reduction would be of interest. As for the results, stunning. In particular the lake and the big stone shots. Thanks for such great content.
Thanks so much David. I do usually use more noise reduction techniques when editing more heavily. .as I did with some of these images. I use Topaz De-noise Ai.
Really appreciate the comparison Richard. Excellent as always with practical demonstrations/images IMO being more practical to explain the differences. And of course loved the images. Thank you
Great video and superb images Richard. I'll be in your area the first week of September, so I may ring you for subject location. We are clouded out again this month in NSW. The Sony A74 flip screen also has rotation limitations. Luckily the Canon R5 mk2 follows all other 5 series cameras and has the remote in the front.
Yes Keith. The Nikon Z8 and Z9 also have the remote port in the front. However that becomes an issue with the Atoll mount. And you still have the usb-c input on the side on all of those cameras.
Great video, Richard. I have been pondering over the Z6 III, as I think I probably will switch over to mirrorless soon, so this was really useful. Some beautiful images, too!!
Richard, thank you for the fabulous camera comparisons and image breakdown. I agree a real reviews better than looking at specs, charts and graphs. Many photo workshops I'm primarily the lone Canon shooter. All others Nikon and maybe a Sony. Trust me, I've seen my fair share of excessive shadow noise in my older Canons even when shooting several minute long exposures. My canon R5's pretty good art night and still lags a Sony A7 III I use. I've always marveled at the Nikon night image quality vs my Canons. I'm actually considering ordering a Z6 III provided the skies here in the northeastern US actually clear at night.
Amazing content and work Sir Richard! I purchased the 6iii ( back up for my z9) and so far i really like it. Thank you so much again for all this inspiring work Sir
Thanks Robert. Yes I think they are squeezing in lots of speed and video features into these new cameras to make them hybrid models .. this may have the side effect of reducing some features from previous models.
Amazing photos. Thanks for sharing. I also took the milky way photos and they came with a lot of noise even after stacking them. Anyway, love your work
Great review as usual Richard, fantastic images, loved the wide angle image with the MW across the top along with the water reflection one but they are all great.
I have a INIU PD 65W 20000 mAh BI-B62 power bank and can confirm this works with the Z6III and the Nikon suplied c-c cable. I love my Z6 III with its F3 inspired red side stripe detail.
Great video, as always. Thank you. I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on the Nikon Z6iii and appreciate the time that you put in to bring us this information.
I'm glad the z6iii came out. I don't have any plans to get one, but I've found that Nikon brand F-mount glass has come down considerably since its release, so I'm picking up some good deals on AF-S lenses. The problem I've had since upgrading to mirrorless is that, unlike my old D600, my Z6 doesn't register the aperture changes in the metadata on my lenses that have manual aperture control, and AF only works if the motor is in the lens. Good Z glass is still a bit expensive for my budget, but I'm watching for the deals. For now, im happy to use the FTZ adapter.
Thanks for tuning in Derek. The original Z6 is a wonderful camera for nightscapes. I used the FTZ adaptor for many years on that camera with great results.
Excellent practical review Richard! To be honest, if I'd have to choose right now I'd just go for a Z6II and save a little money to invest in a lens. Very helpful, thank you!

Valuable insights there Richard that price though ouch! Great images all round and how to shoot using the new baby by adding light or extending the shutter. 👏👏
Hi Richard. You are so much more than an inspiration, more like a Guru lol. Just a quick question. I was looking at one of your older videos from about 7yrs ago, "Seek and you will find" using the Nikon D610 and a Samyang 14mm 2.8 lens. I wanted to compare your images then to now to see how different they are. I was wondering, how do you feel the change in camera technology over the years has helped you in your photography? Thanks mate, still loving the content.
Thanks so much for your great support. Yes there is no doubt that the camera gear has improved since those times. The other thing is that software has a lot more options as well to make the editing easier. But the creative side is still just as elusive as ever.
Thanks Richard and definitely enjoyed the video and comparison. I love the Star Light view on Z8 and good to see in this camera.. I will be happily keeping my Z6II and Z8 combo for a while though (one day, Z6II will get Astro Mod ).. Enjoy the weekend and great images
Good video from the user perspective with the Z 6 III, the photos are fantastic. As a Nikon user, the Nikon Z 6 III has new features that I would like to have (Starlight mode, the rotating screen, faster and more precise focusing...) but I don't think I'll update my Z 7 II and Z 5 yet. Richard, any camera in your hands takes fantastic photos, regardless of the dynamic range. Until your next video, hugs.
Richard, Great videos on astral photography. I am "binging on them currently, trying to learn from your experience. I will be shooting the Milky Way and Comet with a 14-24 Z lens. I have a Z6 and Z6iii. Is the Z6 preferred for astral?.... Thanks, Ken S.
Richard, first of all, I congratulate you on your anniversary! I wish you health and great success! Continue to delight us with great photos and useful lessons. Excellent review, and even though I have a Nikon D780, I was interested.
I purchased the Z6III to compliment my Z9, and it is a good all rounder, with the AF vastly improved, however, for night sky photography, at this point, I don't really see an advantage over the Z6II. I still use my Z6 frequently and get very good results, however, it doesn't have the extended shutter speeds, and the ability to run off of a battery pack, which means needing a intervalometer and battery grip to get the extended capability. Personally, I am questioning whether or not I should have just ponied up and extra cash and gotten the Z8, but I will need more shooting time with the Z6III in all different environments before rendering a final opinion.
Would you say that the Z6iii is at least as good as the Z6 or Z6ii at night scape. Meaning it is not a reason to not get the Z6iii? I have a Z6 and don’t want to lose the nightscape ability. Thanks
@@doriangray8007It’s a tough one to answer as it depends what else you shoot. To let you know i have a Z6 (Astro Modded), Z9,8 and a 6iii. I professionally shoot football/soccer and i got the z6iii mainly as my second body to my main Z9 (Z9 with 400mmnTC and Z6 with a 70-200mm). The 6iii is great for that. I shoot nightscapes in my spare time and love my modded Z6. I have just come back from a test shoot with the z6 vs z6iii. Basically my take away is the difference between the two is marginal for Astro landscape (but is noticeable). The 6iii is by far the best all round camera out of the two so if you are shooting lots of things (especially fast action) get the 6iii and you will love it and it still holds its own shooting Astro landscapes. If you just shoot night landscape Astro then just stick with the original z6.
Is there a reason why you stick with the Z6's over higher mp Z cameras? Trying to figure out if i go with the Z7 or a Z6. For context i would use it for nightscapes, with some family stuff chucked in there. Thanks for the great content.
Great test, thanks! You’ve confirmed my finding as well, that the Z6III is fussy about power sources and cables. Very odd. And internal batteries! I bought a pair of SmallRig batteries supposedly compatible (and they are on earlier Z6s) but not on the Z6III. It just powered up enough to provide a warning about the battery incompatibility and then refused to work. Maybe after a firmware update. And yes, the dynamic range issue is a RUclips fueled tempest in a teapot. I have found the Z6III is about one EV less tolerant of under exposure than earlier models - it can’t be underexposed by more than 3 stops where the Z6 could withstand 4 stops under exposure and still look OK when lifting the shadows. So, yes, it is worse - the price for having the faster readout sensor for other benefits, most of little use to us astrophotographers. But as you say, even 3 stops under is more than you should ever have to deal with if you expose images properly to begin with. And the features like Starlight View, extended shutter speeds and the red menus are great for us. I’m finding it’s also not bad for red sensitivity. Nebulas show up pretty well for a stock camera. I’ll be interested in your impressions against your modified Z6. Cheers!
Thanks Alan. I didn't try any non brand batteries but I have heard similar stories from others. I'll have to do further testing between it and the modified camera. I'll look forward to your thoughts on the camera as always.
Richard Another great video, wish I could find a person that explains sony cameras as well as you do with Nikon. If I didn’t invest in Sony so heavily you would have another Nikon user. Good work
Great work as always Richard, just wondering if the Z6 mark 3 has the same amount of manual focus assist maginification as the z6 mark ii. You touched on this subject in a comparison video regarding the Sony A7 iii. I'm currently using the Sony A7C mark ii which goes upto 13.7x magnification.
Thanks for watching Steve. Yes the mk3 version has the same amount of focus magnification as the mk2 model .. no issues there. It seems it's only the low megapixel Sony A7S3 that has the limited focus magnification of about 3.5 times.
Cheers for a wonderful compilation, Richo, as always, living vicariously through you! Absolute stunning photos! If you can ever get your hands on the original z7 or z7ii, I would love to see what you can tweak out of those high-DR high-resolution sensors. Enjoy that side and greetings from a chilly Melbourne.
What an amazing review Richard, thank you ! Although I'm a Z9 addict, (only have one :) ), looking for night scape body down the track Regards, ................. Gary ........................... AU (Adelaide)
I've been debating whether to get the Z6II or the Z6III for my nightscapes, I think the difficulty of the external power supply may have convinced me to go with the Z6II. By the way I have an H-alpha-astro modified Z6 that is incredible but I can't use it around a lighthouse without getting a red halo that I just can't get out. Thank you for the review!
Thanks for watching Lisa. Yes the red halo is a well known issue with astro mod cameras . .happens also when you shoot toward the moon in the night sky.
About USB charging, as a power engineer, I have the following suggestions., the USB charging of Nikon camera are use PD Chat protocol, so you must look for a power bank with Type C output.(must use two type C cable) and make sure the output must have 7v/9v/12v. And I also observed a phenomenon. When I plug in the USB to charge my zf camera, I have to wait for about 10 seconds before charging starts. This time is really long.
The flip LCD screen colliding with any cable plugged into the ports on the side of the camera is an issue that a lot of cameras have. A port on the front of the camera would surely eliminate this ongoing problem. It would be a helpful advance if the designers of new models of cameras took note of the problems that users find in the field and then incorporate the changes into any new camera release. Great images of course Richard and I liked your reflection image the best. 😎👍😁
Thanks so much Geoff. Yes I think the collision of ports is something that does get overlooked. They assume only video operators are using things plugged in when shooting from behind the camera. Usually on a nice head high tripod.
Thank you for all your great work! Can I ask a technical question? You mentioned aperture v extending the exposure here I think. I have the Nikon 14-30 f4 lens. I also have the 20 1.8. However, I was wondering, even tho the f4 lens is pretty slow, can that be 'compensated' for by simply extending the exposure by using a tracker? Or does signal/noise maths mean that larger aperture will ALWAYS beat longer exposure? I thought if I can get 60 seconds on a tracker on the f4 lens, it might be equivalent to say a single shot of say 15-20 seconds on the 1.8. Probably some law of light that means the f4 will be a compromise I'm assuming!
Yes I think if you're using a tracker then you'll be fine with the f4 aperture. There are other factors at play . .for example Light Transmission . .many prime lenses are better than zooms at this. This manifests in vignetting etc.
Greetings Richard, I'm a new follower to your channel and wanted to engage and ask a question. Do you use the Nikon the in body NR functions/ levels during your captures or just apply NR in post with adjustments/ programs? Looking for tips ahead of a up coming night of Perseids photography here in BC, Canada (if the clouds and/ or forest fires smoke do not impact the skies)
I think I'll get the Z6 mk2. Would you say the NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is good enough for amateur star trails and time lapses? I think being able to use what cable and power bank that fits me is more important. I don't really see myself needing a top of the line day time camera for just doing good vacation shots.
AGAIN ., I love love love your work & videos …. In Minnesota the misquotos are horrendous… i have never tried light painting., it feels daunting. I need to get moving ! Thank u for all u do ., i ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT ❤
Yes I think you're right. Obviously all of my nightscapes are generally 800iso and above. But I did shoot a lot of portraits and general daytime shots at iso100 and didn't notice any particular issues. .but I didn't under-expose any images either.
Very nice Richard, love your finished shots and I can pick your work out, and would know it was your's. That camera will probably never be in my sights, but I do still really like my Z5 for fun shooting, flowers/insects.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I would love to see or hear again how you do your light painting. I noticed your settings on the light painting images, but would still love to see your length of time of lighting shiny building, vs grass or the rocks around the water. Could you do a shoot, with the intent of just the light painting? I'm sure I"m not the only one who would like to see it in action! Appreciate all you do do, and yes, I'll go back and watch your older vids :)
@@jessicaeiss2541 I do have lots of videos demonstrating the lighting techniques. . but it's really difficult to show this in real time on video in pitch darkness. This video is probably the closest I have: ruclips.net/video/u1qlbtnPP5M/видео.html
Great video and amazing shots. I just bought a z6iii (with the 24-120 lens). Have only just set it up and taken a few shots of my daughter playing basketball, and some shots of my old camera (d7200) and lenses that I’m about to sell. Going to purchase a prime lens next (might splurge on the 85 1.2). Looking forward to getting back into photography like I was a few years ago. This video has inspired me to do some night time photography. What lenses would you recommend for this? Thanks 😊
Great review and stunning images! For all who complain about the dynamic range of this otherwise excellent camera: learn how to expose your images properly and you will never ever have problem with dr :P
Richard, how do you go about light painting an image when you also need to focus stack foreground for detail (depth of field)? I go back and forth between camera and light paint each area at a time that I have in focus - maybe you have a better technique! As always, enjoyed your photos and watching you work.
Hey Kerry, in this case I lit each shot of the image separately. I may need to do a couple of shots to get it right. The 2 shot focus stack image in this video was shot at 14mm so it only required 2 images to get everything sharp. Also, I generally stop down the aperture on my close foregrounds which also increases the depth of field.
Hey Richard, very nice video. Thanks and greetings from Slovakia. I do have a question regarding the lens collar which can be seen at 29:40. What type is it? Thanx
@@nightscapeimages.richard Many thanks. One more question. I wathced your videos on Nikon Z 20mm and Viltrox 16mm Z. If you didn't have any of these lenses, which one would you choose for landscapes and astro?
You need a power bank that supports power delivery (PD). A lot of new devices are only supporting charging via power delivery. The advantage is fasting charging
I have not used a Z8 but I don't think the Z8 would be any better than the Z6iii. I think the Z6ii is slightly better regarding noise levels, but after editing you won't notice any difference.
Hi Richard, Thank you for the comparison of the Z6iii with your Z6ii. I have been wondering if you have tried the Z7, Z8 or Z9 to see if the higher resolution is worth the extra expense. Or have you concluded that doubling the megapixels aren't necessary for making large prints?
For all the photography I've ever done I've never wanted more megapixels for any of it. I do a lot of printing and the 24 mpx is fine . .as well as that I often shoot panoramas and that makes the pixel density quite large.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Thank you, Richard. While your pixel density is ;arge with panos, it also aids in reducing noise. I appreciate your dedication to sharing your knowledge and talent with other nightscape photo artists.
Hi Richard, thanks for the very thorough tests and comparisons, that must have been a lot of work... I noticed you used the 14-24 f2.8S this time, how did it fair compared to your usual Nikon and Viltrox primes, if I may ask?
Thanks for the review, but I didn't quite understand the most important point - does the Z6iii have more noise than the Z6ii? Maybe you compared them side by side, with the same lens and the same settings.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I did a lot of testing between the Z6ii and the Z8. I have been thinking for a long time whether I can change the Z6ii to the Z8 as an astro camera. My conclusion is that the noise level is about the same in both (when looking at the same size photo). However, the Z8 has better colors and no red tint, hot pixels when making long exposures. In this area, the Z6iii can also be better because of the new sensor.
Well the D850 is probably the best DSLR camera ever made. But these new mirrorless cameras have many extra features packed into a smaller package. But image quality won't be a lot different.
Can you see good number of stars to focus on at night ? Can you see the Milky Way core? I noticed Sony cameras shows way more stars in the sky than my Z6 with same settings in the live view before pressing the shutter.
It will depend on how much light pollution you have. . but I have not noticed any difference at all. I can see plenty of stars . .but it always depends on what lens you are using. I like fast aperture prime lenses because of this.
Thanks for watching. I'm using the Silence Corner Atoll bracket. It attaches to the bottom of the camera and the lens fits through it. It allows easy rotation from landscape to portrait orientation. See here: silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series I'm using the "C" model.
Regarding the USB power issue. Have you tried a USB-C Adaptor? I don't know if this would work or not? I know another connector is not ideal, but I happened to buy one recently due to some limits connecting a few data items to my laptop. I bought it from Bunnings(!) an 'ANTSIG USB-C Adaptor' C female to A male, it says it's "for charging and data sync" Keep up the great work and videos.. Cheers, Mike
A note on the dynamic range. It's only in the 'base ISO' so high iso it isn't behind, it's quite good. BUT shooting well lit landscapes at ISO 100 it shows less DR than others in its class. This is all just based on measurements from photons to photos website refer to their "Photographic Dynamic Range" charts. Z 6 III falls well behind II and I. Once all are set to ISO 800 and above, they are closer. only below that does the Z 6 III show less DR. For how YOU shoot nightscapes, Richard, I highly doubt you'll tell a difference or be hindered! That said, I also don't think the sensor warrants an upgrade for you unless you wanted to shoot like, raw 6K video which IDK why you would for vlogs
i am considering buying Z6iii aiming to get a better Video features , i own D750 and Z6i for my Astro timelapse. Few question please (1) As i understand so far now, The low DR for Z6iii is at 800iso and below. If I shoot at 3200iso, there should be no significant difference in noise between Z6ii and Z6iii, correct? (2) Moreover If i don't extremely adjust the Shadow slide bar in LR that much, i won't get much noise image using Z6iii, correct ? / thanks
Yes basically all of that is correct. To be honest I think the narrative regarding the dynamic range reduction on the Z6iii is blown out of proportion. I didn't notice much difference at all and all the images I've shot with the Z6iii even at iso100 have been brilliant.
Haha, well you didn't miss anything relating to the aurora. Maybe a dim glow on the horizon .. but nothing more. Although I was distracted by making this video.
@@nightscapeimages.richard yeah by 6pm my app had shown it had dropped from being kp7 most of the day and meant to right up to midnight down to kp4 which is why i didn't bother because it was also too late to get there in time to do a milkyway shoot without needing to do a vertical panorama.
Regarding the power banks not working: I have had issues with my power banks not working with the Z6ii and what I discovered is that if I plug a lens warmer into the bank along with the camera they work. I think it has something to do with the power banks sensing that the camera is drawing power. My theory is that the Z6ii does not draw enough power so the power bank electronics shut off the supply because it detects that the power bank is not in use. I had been waiting for the Z6iii to come out with the idea that I would replace my D500 crop sensor that I use for birding with it, but since it still has the 24 mp sensor and the price is so high, I decided to go with the Z8. I'll have to test the power banks with the Z8 to see if they work. I am planning to try the Z8 along side the Z6ii sometime for nightscape just to see how the higher mp sensor handles the noise and dynamic range. I suspect it will not be as good, but then again having more mp might make the noise a little less noticeable.
Great insights Ken. I've had the same issue in reverse .. Sometimes the lens warmer needs to be turned up high to make sure it draws enough current to remain on. As you've suggested I also often attach both devices to keep it running.
I've been using this one for years now. www.ebay.com.au/itm/186004927172?_nkw=yongnuo+rf603ii+Nikon&itmmeta=01J5H9SKDZEF6813K55QJKM8Y2&hash=item2b4ec1f2c4:g:7asAAOSwfjJizNuX&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlThgwleiaCYi7cZOLq6NFoprf4tOBNBN0iJmQa1DVgQx9Lsf01qJ0t4eZzVeXTmByHkb%2FmUC2H6uQC6qy%2FuJg6ZkC69rB8wBz2xE047Xw24gW5VueGNlwtg%2Fgjd5QzD%2FC4DFiNzq%2Fnwie8bmt8rPOxDiH93okLhEsii17GlA%2FNF4b%2FXnfWq2VrMZD9e6OuqBU6jeQvgaaWfbGKq3xkcEkeb%2FvI%2FCPynYjSv%2B0EHOnnnx4ffY8QXqW614JAId8HdVdL2taJdrJvJgiFWI9z2%2F9T14Ht%2Be1ZHeIdVt%2BNNqFJCw%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMnrfmqaxk

Thank you Richard for such a detailed and insightful review. It helped me get closer to a conclusion to buy a z6iii.
I think it's a great camera Amit. And for nightscape photography where we often shoot at higher iso's I think it's excellent.
Great video, Richard. I have been pondering over the Z6 III, as I think I probably will switch over to mirrorless soon, so this was really useful. Some beautiful images, too!!
You won't go wrong with it at all Simon.
Thanks for watching Richard. I think all of the newer cameras are wonderful .. it's just the ergonomics and smaller details we have to choose between.
Amazing content and work Sir Richard! I purchased the 6iii ( back up for my z9) and so far i really like it. Thank you so much again for all this inspiring work Sir
@@demipita9090 Thanks heaps for watching. Really appreciate your comments.
Superbes prises de vue j'adore bon ciel Richard !
Many thanks Patrick, I appreciate your support.
This happened with the Sony a7iv, worse than the a7iii in low light, but not necessarily a bad camera, great review🙏
Clear sky!
Anyway, love your work
Thanks so much for watching. A good fast aperture lens will do wonders.
Great review as usual Richard, fantastic images, loved the wide angle image with the MW across the top along with the water reflection one but they are all great.
@@lesladbrook4508 Always appreciated Les. Appreciate your support.
I have a INIU PD 65W 20000 mAh BI-B62 power bank and can confirm this works with the Z6III and the Nikon suplied c-c cable. I love my Z6 III with its F3 inspired red side stripe detail.
Thanks for your insights. Yes it's a great camera.
Great video, as always. Thank you. I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on the Nikon Z6iii and appreciate the time that you put in to bring us this information.
You're very welcome Jerry. Thanks for watching.
I’m a Nikon fan, but look at Viltrox AF lenses...good quality and so much cheaper.
Yes, it seems like a beautiful camera.I couldn't afford that price line either.Beautiful shots Richard.
Thanks Jeff. I imagine the price will lower over time.
Great review Richard
Thanks for checking it out Julie
Excellent practical review Richard! To be honest, if I'd have to choose right now I'd just go for a Z6II and save a little money to invest in a lens. Very helpful, thank you!
I think that's a very wise thing to do as well Jeroen. Apart from the Starlight mode there isn't any advantage in the Z6iii
Great video, can you please do a video of how you light paint and equipment?

Thanks for watching Carl. I'm sure the price will lower after it's been out for a while.
Loved those pics Richard 👍
Thanks so much for watching Aaron
Thanks Richard and definitely enjoyed the video and comparison. I love the Star Light view on Z8 and good to see in this camera.. I will be happily keeping my Z6II and Z8 combo for a while though (one day, Z6II will get Astro Mod ).. Enjoy the weekend and great images
You are well set up there with that combination Virat. Loving your work mate.
Thanks so much for your great support Mario.
I am considering to get one as I loan from Nikon center and tested out in birds photography only.
It's a wonderful camera Graeme
Glad I have my z6ii, if I add a camera it would be a 45 mp Nikon. Good review!
The Z6ii is a wonderful camera Margot. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your terrific video Richard. I'm not a Nikon guy but got something from the video regardless.
I really appreciate you watching.
Thanks for watching Ken. Both the Z6 models you have are wonderful for shooting nightscape photography.
Hope it all goes well.
Richard, first of all, I congratulate you on your anniversary! I wish you health and great success! Continue to delight us with great photos and useful lessons.
Excellent review, and even though I have a Nikon D780, I was interested.
Thanks for your great support, really appreciated.
bloody fantastic!
Thanks so much for watching.
Thanks heaps for your insights. I agree that for night photography the Z6ii is amazing.
@@doriangray8007 It's very capable indeed . .I love it.
You are a pro with astro shooting Sir! a lot to learn from you. Mind me asking which lens did you use for most of your amazing astro shots?
Thanks so much my friend. My favourite lens is the Nikon 20mm f1.8Z
Richard Another great video, wish I could find a person that explains sony cameras as well as you do with Nikon. If I didn’t invest in Sony so heavily you would have another Nikon user. Good work
I'm sure there will be plenty of good Sony shooters out there with content to help you Wayne. Appreciate you watching.
Great work as always Richard, just wondering if the Z6 mark 3 has the same amount of manual focus assist maginification as the z6 mark ii. You touched on this subject in a comparison video
regarding the Sony A7 iii.

Thanks a lot Gary. They are all very goo0d cameras.
About USB charging, as a power engineer, I have the following suggestions.,
the USB charging of Nikon camera are use PD Chat protocol, so you must look for a power bank with Type C output.(must use two type C cable)
and make sure the output must have 7v/9v/12v.
And I also observed a phenomenon. When I plug in the USB to charge my zf camera, I have to wait for about 10 seconds before charging starts. This time is really long.
Thanks so much Jerry. Sounds like what I've experienced.
Should do one with both cameras side by side using same lens. I do all the time - people love to see that stuff
@@CINENIMUS Yes it does take a lot of time. Don't have 2 of same lenses so would have to swap over.
Super photos and thanks for the candid video. Quick question, what's the lens/camera collar?
Thanks for watching. I'm using the Atoll rotating collar. silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
What is the bracket you have on your lens to rotate from horizontal to portrait orientation. Great video on the Z 6 iii
Thanks for watching Ken. It's called an Atoll Bracket. See here: silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
Great video Richard! Can the screen be flipped and folded back into the back so the screen is facing out like the older 2 cameras?
Yes it can Jason
Very Nice Richard.
Thanks for watching David.
Thanks so much for following along Tony. I apply Noise Reduction later in post processing.
Yes the Z6ii is ideal for this type of work. The Nikon Z14-24 f2.8 is very good for star trails and timelapse.
Obrigado Richard.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hi Richard, my first time hear, really enjoyed the vid....
I very much appreciate you watching. Thank you.
I think where people are saying it struggles compared to the competition is below 800iso. Over 800 it's in line with other cameras

I don't think it will be a problem for shooting nightscapes at all. Appreciate you watching.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I put it to my wishlist, but for now I'm still happy with my good ol' z6l :)
Thanx

@@martinvalkovic I would choose the Nikon 20mm f1.8Z lens every day of the week.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Many thanks for your opinion.
You need a power bank that supports power delivery (PD). A lot of new devices are only supporting charging via power delivery. The advantage is fasting charging
Yes but the older camera seems to be a lot more compatible with more units.
Hi like the practical pictures and honest about noise. Did this noise will be less or no noise if used z8 ??? Is z6ii is less noisy than z6iii???
I have not used a Z8 but I don't think the Z8 would be any better than the Z6iii. I think the Z6ii is slightly better regarding noise levels, but after editing you won't notice any difference.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thank you 🙏
Hi Richard, Thank you for the comparison of the Z6iii with your Z6ii.
The Nikon 14-24 f2.8Z lens is excellent .. however I prefer the f1.8 primes for their massive light gathering power.
Was nice to see you get a shot on an Aurora.. :)
Thanks for watching Mark. The aurora was from last year but others did see one on that same night around the place.
Thanks for the review, but I didn't quite understand the most important point - does the Z6iii have more noise than the Z6ii? Maybe you compared them side by side, with the same lens and the same settings.
I think the Z6ii has slightly less noise than the Z6iii but after editing it's really hard to see a great difference.
This maybe comparing Apples to oranges, how would the z6iii compare with DSLR’s like the D850 ?
May I ask what is the silver bracket on your lens? Size and model? Can it be added to any lens for easy rotating?
Thanks for watching. I'm using the Silence Corner Atoll bracket. It attaches to the bottom of the camera and the lens fits through it. It allows easy rotation from landscape to portrait orientation. See here: silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
I'm using the "C" model.
Hey Mike. That's a very good suggestion . .I'll give that a go and see what happens.
Yes I think that is very true Caleb. I haven't tried the Z6iii on landscapes as yet . .but at some stage I'll give it a go.
Hi Richard, what camera rotator is that you have mounted to the Z6III and does it do continuous 360deg rotation or only 90deg?
Hey Tim. It's the Atoll collar. It rotates 360 degrees. silencecorner.net/collections/atoll-series
i am considering buying Z6iii aiming to get a better Video features , i own D750 and Z6i for my Astro timelapse.

The manual says you need to have USB-C on both ends of the cable. Is that why your power banks don't work?
For some that's the case, but others that supply PD via usb-c still don't work either.
For timelaps, can I see the number of frames remaining on the top small display?
Yes it does do a countdown of frames when shooting timelapse.
@@nightscapeimages.richard its not on Z6 II, it looks like Nikon engineers worked hard on the Z6III 🙈🙈🙈
What is that lens ring/mount?
