Very good review hitting a lot of the new features and how to apply them. I bought my Z6III the first day it came out to replace the original Z6 due to the frustrating auto focus. Thank you so much, it's great to hear that you liked my suggestions! Makes me feel a bit relaxed, because I often think I'm the only one saying them :)
Nice video - a few comments though: With respect to your criticism that the eye track should take over one you put the box on the person there is a reason that this does NOT happen. That is because the point of the box is to be able to quicly select different targets - if the box disappeared and the eye tracking took over you would not be able to switch to another target easily. What you are looking for is the use of subject detect with 3D tracking mode as you do later in the video. In 3D tracking with subject eye detect turned on you can select a target with the box and then the eye detect will take over until you let off the AF/shutter button - in this way you can select a target and then let the eye detect track around the frame. What you have described is not a bug - it is a feature and a good one. Also, you can set function buttons all over the camera to activate any AF focus mode including 3D - so if you want 3D to activate when you hit OK you can - it is much better to do this with the AF ON button however - then the shutter button can be ALL Area which you can immediately override with the AF ON button. -PD
Thank you for your comment! I tried to set it up for the OK button, and it didn't work. Tracking around the whole frame: I absolutely understand that is why 3D tracking is, but I find that the 3D tracking box is quite small. On Sonys at least you can configure it's size (S, M, L). If I use the Custom box on the Nikon Z 6 III, I was expecting the camera to track the found eye as long as I was holding halfway down the shutter button (or Af-ON). If I want to find a new target, I would just lift my finger off. Anyways, to me it was surprising, because Canons track the subject around the whole frame even in custom Area AF mode.
@@miklosmayerphoto Understood - I see what you are saying. BTW at 14:30 your shots are less in focus because of the lens. That's why there is 70-200 F2.8 S lens it has better AF motor. 70-180 has slower AF motor from the tests.
Very interesting point about the slower AF motor, it would be worth checking side by side! In this video, I did the same test with the Nikon Z8 and 85 mm F/1.2 lens, and it was way better (I don't know how fast that AF motor is): ruclips.net/video/v__ZAhr5I6E/видео.html The screen is really a big thing in how much you like using the camera, so if you don't mind the extra weight, I'd go for the Z8. As someone who shoots mainly wildlife, go Z8 if you can afford it. z6iii is fine if you don't need MP. But personally I crop a lot with wildlife and feel I truly need the MP from Z8. I absolutely love my Z8. Best camera I've ever used.

The AF was good , but it did strigle in some situations that I think the Z9 would find focus. Overall great camera , I may add one at the begining of next year.
Thank you for your insights! Though I did not test them side-to-side, I also had the feeling that Z8/Z9 has a tad bit better AF. I just checked and Nikon claims that the AF is inherited from the Z8/Z9. So maybe it was the difference in lenses I used them with.

I reassign the front F1 button to playback solving the problem of top left on older versions. Agree this better, “out of the box” but can the playback on Z6 iii playback be customised? Still has the non locked card slot door I notice.
Thanks for your tip, I never thought of assigning the Fn button for playback! Great idea! Yes, all the function buttons can be customised separately for shooting, and for separately for playback.
I'm still a bit confused about all of the autofocus options, and maybe there is an idea for another video or two here. One question I have is if it's faster and easier to use User Profiles settings instead of custom buttons to switch focus modes? I'd love to hear the pros and cons of doing that, if it's possible to do that. For me, I mostly shoot street photography (people, sometimes 1-3 in frame, sometimes more) and then landscapes and architecture. Would it make sense to just have one User Profile for single-point autofocus, where not much is moving in the frame and where I pick the focus point and then re-compose, and then to have U2 be "I need to track a moving object" that has 3D tracking on, with human-face recognition? Also, would love to see a video about using the camera display to select a focus point. Isn't that faster in some cases? Would also like to see a discussion of when or if to use the joystick vs locking focus by pressing shutter halfway down. When do you use the joystick?
Great question! You can of course do that with User Profiles. But there are so many other things you can also assign to User Profile (WB, drive mode, file formats, metadata, exposure settings, etc)... So I think it would be a waste to assign User Profiles just to have different AF points / zones. Instead, you can set one of the customisable buttons to cycle between AF zones / points. So for example, you have full Area AF, but then you press the Fn button and it jumps to 3D. Then you press the Fn button and it jumps to single AF point. In the Menu you can select which AF area modes the Fn button would cycle between. I hope this helps!
The 3d traking you can set to use the display button and then use the af on button to normal focus. And I then also use the fn1 button to single point auto focus. So I have 3 different buttons to autofocus. No need to go into any menu to change autofocus modes.
Could you actually set it up to the DISP button? You're in Auto Area AF mode, you press it once, and it jumps into 3D tracking mode? Because I tried the same but with the Fn1 button, and did not work.
@@miklosmayerphoto my disp button is set to 3d tracking. So as long as I keep it in it will be using 3d. When I leave it it goes to the autofocus mode I am shooting in. Then my gn1 button is set to single point, as long and I keep it in it single point focus.
@@mrbadventures8604 Thank you for your prompt reply, that's perfect clarification for me. Thanks for the good review! How did you calculate the IBIS stops though? With 70mm if you compare to 1/80 shutter speed, the 0.4s is about 5 stops (not 8).
Oh God, thanks for pointing that out! I clearly lost my arithmetic skills... :))) Indeed, that would be about 5 stops. To be honest, I took shots at 1.3 seconds as well, but only one came out as sharp enough out of three. That would make it roughly 7 stops, but that's still far from the claimed 8.5 stops
Hello Sir. Please if it is possible can you make a full review of the Nikon FTZ Mark II adapter, on RUclips no one has a real informative review of this product. it will be interesting to see how F-mount lenses from any brand can perform on a Nikon Z mount Camera, how accurate the autofocus is how fast is it, and so on. I think it will be interesting for a lot of people because right now a lot of people are considering buying a Nikon mirrorless camera but Nikon does not offer affordable Z-mount lenses and also there are no real good alternative lenses from other brands like Sigma or Tamron. for example, you can find a lot of perfect lenses for Sony E mount like the latest Sigma24-70mm f/2.8 mark II lens. to make a long story short You know better than me that you can find a lot of good half-price lenses for E mount but not for R mount or Z mount and there are a lot of people including myself want to know if we can buy Nikon Mirrorless camera and adapt F mount lenses without any problem with FTZ adapter and be happy.

I was expecting (hoping) close to same performance by the Nikon Z6III, but was somewhat taken aback by what you were able to show from your video, as the autofocus seemed a bit erratic / was initially slow to find the dog's face. I am looking to upgrade from Nikon Z6, and taking pictures of dogs running (usually straight towards the camera) is one of my favorite sort of pictures to take. And this is an absolute chore with the Z6, which required single point focusing with unreliable results. It seems the Z8 is well capable of this, but I am just wondering how short the Z6 III will fall from the Z8s performance. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
That's a very good question, it would be great to have them side-by-side. If you can afford the Z8, and don't care about the extra weight, I would definitely go for that.
This is a good review. I have the Z50 and, for my needs, the autofocus works well enough in most cases. I don't generally focus on fast moving subjects, so my needs are pretty basic. The Z50 autofocus struggles, however, in low light. (I switch to manual focus and it works OK here). I'm happy to see the Z6 iii is more capable in this area.
Because you often want to limit the area where it should find the eyes. but once you have the eyes locked on, it would make sense to track them around the whole frame. Basically like the 3D mode, but with a box that has adjustable size.
I really wish they would make a Z7III with the expeed 7 and the viewfinder from the Z6III. The Z8 is just too big and heavy if you need to hike long to location as a landscape photographer. Starlight is another addition that a new Z7III could benefit from.
I like what's Nikon it's doing. Nikon offer more for the price than Sony and even Canon sometimes. And Nikon tolerate some third party lenses. ¿Do you know if you can use APSC lenses in full frame mode on Nikon Z cameras? That's a big advantage of Sony over Canon. It would be great if Nikon allow DX lenses be used in FX mode.
No, the camera automatically jumps to DX mode. It would be foolish to let people use that, people who don't know what they are doing would start to complain about the "bad image quality" :)
@@miklosmayerphoto but people who knows can take advantage of smaller lighter cheaper lenses with great image quality. You can crop in post when needed, mostly for video stabilization. And there are a lot of lenses that fully cover full frame, like the Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 at 12mm. Seems like Sony is still my only option 🤔
The price is still stupidly too high in Uk, Australia, Europe, Canada and New Zealand. Its not worth it, get the Z8 much better camera and better value when on sale .
Thank you! That's funny, because that's the first thing that I deactivate on these newer Nikons :) But I totally understand why some people prefer it. The reason I don't like it, is that it also switches in the image review mode, so if I'm holding the camera vertically, I will have to use other arrows to move between images.
choosing best images has allways been in nikon proffesional cameras (protect image) since the d700, and the adobe star system was in the z8 and z9 on launch. The system trickeled down to the z6 which is a prosumer camera
also at 10:30 the option you want is 3d tracking, where you choose an eye with a small af box and it tracks it (in 3d) across everything. The C1 C2 modes are usually used in low light as fixed areas for the AF to focus on. By limiting the scan area it has much better hitrate within the limited zone. That's why nikon has the reputation of best low light autofocus.
For sure, protecting feature has been there, but you don't see those in Lightroom. However, you see the rating stars in Lightroom and many other program.
@@eldengard23 3D tracking: it's good, but it's a very small box, and it's not that easy to put that small box onto someone's head. That's why it would make sense to limit the area where it finds the eyes (let's say, the upper right third of the frame), but then it should track that given eye, as long as you keep the AF activated.
13:50 all nikon MILC cameras have that options. Custom settings>controllsAF area + AF ON. It's programable on display, af-on and middle press of the joystick, aswell as the 2 front custom buttons. This is an awful review, you have no idea how to even use the camera properly. 3D is for tracking in good light, AF Wide S or one of the custom areas with 1x1 size is for tracking low light subjects. You need to know camera settings and how to use it before you form your opinions, wether they be positive or negative
@@eldengard23 I tried exactly that setting, and it didn't work. I have screen recording of it, but didn't include in the video not to bore people. On the Z6 III this setting is only available if you tap on the screen - something that pulls you out from taking photos, costing seconds. Believe me, after 9 years of doing private photo tours for more than 800 photographers, I've used every camera out there, and know their quirks.
The 70-200 is heavy and expensive. Agree. But also quite a bit better in all other aspects. I always enjoy your reviews. Thanks. If you want your canon like tracking mode make a custom size box and use 3d tracking.
@@miklosmayerphoto The "Nikon way" is to do a little dance with AF-ON set to "AF-area mode+AF-ON" > 3D Tracking. First, use Wide Area AF to capture the eye. @@miklosmayerphoto to clarify you have to start autofocusing in Wide Area AF before performing the handoff, it isn't enough to let the camera detect the eye, the camera has to actively be tracking it
I didn't say it's a waste. I said, don't waste your money. I know it's a tad bit better in every aspect, but the design of that lens could be so much better. Why couldn't Nikon make it smaller (look at the Canon RF version)? Okay, some people don't like the extending design... Why did they put the zoom ring where it's so uncomfortable?

The Z50 autofocus struggles, however, in low light. (I switch to manual focus and it works OK here). I'm happy to see the Z6 iii is more capable in this area.
What is the point of tracking the eye inside a box and then moving the box? The eye tracking without the box is already doing the job.
Because you often want to limit the area where it should find the eyes. but once you have the eyes locked on, it would make sense to track them around the whole frame. Basically like the 3D mode, but with a box that has adjustable size.
I love mine. Great video review bud
Thank you! Have fun with it!
Great in-depth video. Which is good new z6iii or at same price used z8 for all types of photography.
I loved the Z8, but it's a much bigger body. Depends what you mostly shoot.
Z8 is better in most respects and more mature.
I really wish they would make a Z7III with the expeed 7 and the viewfinder from the Z6III. The Z8 is just too big and heavy if you need to hike long to location as a landscape photographer. Starlight is another addition that a new Z7III could benefit from.
Absolutely agree with you! And they could get rid of most of the high-end video features, most photographers never use them
I like what's Nikon it's doing.
In Hungary, they are discounting it quite much in these days. Still, quite expensive - it's because of its video qualities
Nikon zf or z6iii for family.candid shots?
Both
Nice overview, Miklos. I really like how the screen information shifts to vertical display when shooting in portrait mode.
Yes, finally. Most Fujifilm do this already for some years!
@@liciniooliveira-becas3618 Yes, it’s one of favourite features on my X-T5.
Thank you! That's funny, because that's the first thing that I deactivate on these newer Nikons :) But I totally understand why some people prefer it.
The reason I don't like it, is that it also switches in the image review mode, so if I'm holding the camera vertically, I will have to use other arrows to move between images.
Great review, Miklos.
Thank you!
Did the nikon z6iii is overhit during the video???
It didn't, but I was not testing its limits, I only used it in 4K, 8 bit
how much is the price in HUF body only?
As of 2024.08.12 it's 1 254 900 HUF
How do you adjust ISO?
There's a dedicated ISO button. Press it down, and while pressed, rotate the dial on the top back
@@miklosmayerphoto thank you.
choosing best images has allways been in nikon proffesional cameras (protect image) since the d700, and the adobe star system was in the z8 and z9 on launch.
Good review well done 👍
Thank you! :)
The 70-200 is heavy and expensive. Agree. But also quite a bit better in all other aspects.
I always enjoy your reviews. Thanks.
If you want your canon like tracking mode make a custom size box and use 3d tracking.
That's was my "bug": 3D tracking mode in these Nikons is a separate AF Area mode, so you cannot use with the customized box.
@@miklosmayerphoto The "Nikon way" is to do a little dance with AF-ON set to "AF-area mode+AF-ON" > 3D Tracking.
First, use Wide Area AF to capture the eye. Then start holding AF-ON. 3D tracking will start tracking the eye that was captured by Wide Area AF. At this point the camera will track the eye anywhere in the frame until AF-ON is released.
@@miklosmayerphoto to clarify you have to start autofocusing in Wide Area AF before performing the handoff, it isn't enough to let the camera detect the eye, the camera has to actively be tracking it
Unfortunately a little complicated
@@FawfulDied That's very good know, I will have to check. Thanks!
👏🏻🙌🏻
70-200 a waste? You lost me right there. What a ridiculous statement
To me this is still behind the older A7 IV by a big margin in terms of tracking moving object.
Definitely not. Use both extensively.
Hey Miklós, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, currently I'm looking for more works, do you love to have a logo for your channel's branding to have a memorable graphic based monogram logo to help your audience recognise and follow your channel easier? I would love to design a photography themed logo inspired by your direction for you! Let me know if you interested to make it happen! :-)
Thank you Johnny, at this moment I'm not interested in that.
I think you need a lot more knowledge to become a serious reviewer. I had the Z6 III for 2 weeks and discovered the AF handout feature which will allow the camera to focus on the eye after you remove the wide area box away.
Okay, and can you share it with us? What's the setting? Also, there may have been a firmware update since I published the video.
