Here's My Nikon Z8

With all the rumours on the web, all saying the Z8 is coming, I thought I would add to the conversation by asking Nikon; as a full-time commercial photographer based in the city of London, using Nikon as the tool of my choice for 30 years. Here is what I wish the Z8 to be.

Nikon Z Series adding GPS location data to images
Nikon was actually the first!! But didn’t follow through.
how good is the Z 6 iii withe F mount lens
Interesting question. My viewpoint would be that the lens is the most important piece of equipment apart from the photographer. The palette, atmosphere and character that the lens gives are paramount to the photographer's vision. With the AFS and Manual F Mount lenses that I've used with the F2Z adapter. I've experienced no real problems, however the newer Z mount lenses are considerably sharper due to the advances in manufacturing and technology.
Nikon Z8 can receive GPS data from an Android phone through the SnapBridge app, which allows you to transfer location information from your phone to the camera, essentially "geotagging" your photos even if the Z8 itself lacks built-in GPS functionality.
I just wish they didn't cripple the controls compared to the Z8. Give us "Recall Shooting Functions" and "Cycle AF-area mode".
thank you for your feedback.
Nikon really dropped the ball when it comes to GPS in their Z Series 😢 That's the reason I switched to Sony... A GPS receiver chip is dirt cheap and uses minimal power. Nikon should have let the customer decide if they want it ON or OFF...
I understand your frustration, I suppose it's about profit, and unit sold. I'm hoping the Z7iii to have GPS, and disappointed that the Z8 was missing this functionality

60 or 70 mp doesn't provide any real benefit and that is also true for 100 mp. The entire Purpose for Photography is to produce an image for Display and Human Eyesight is not that good. I happen to have 20/10 vision so I can see details most can't and I just can't see any difference between a print done with a 46mp camera and one from a 100mp image. Fact is that it's quite difficult to see the difference between 24mp and 46mp cameras when viewing a print. Note, I am talking "normal" viewing distance without using a magnifier. Basically the only benefit for higher resolution image files is for Pixel Peepers and for additional Crop space. BTW, I consider needing "crop space" as a bad habit, take the time to compose your image well and you don't need to do any cropping.
thank you for your kind words
It makes a difference for archival work, art preservation, science related work, some kinds of macro shooting, etc. Mostly for cropping to see the details.
@@amermeleitor thank you for your thoughts
True, and yet: 1. everyone pixelpeeps, including your grandma: watch how people view photos on their (high res) viewing devices (phones, tablets, etc). One first look at the whole image, and immediate gestures to squeeze into details (the eyes, the faces, the clothing labels, the wrinkles, the flowers, the junk in the background, etc, etc). It has become a habit, an automatic behaviour, across generations and cultures. More MP means more and better details to dive into. In that scenario, 45MP has become an expectation (including from phone cameras). If you shoot exactly the same scene (identical subject, pose, light, composition, etc) with a Z6 and a GFX100, the 100MP image will generate more applause from more people. Even from grandma. 2. For the large poster picture on a wall, you are right, 24MP is more than enough. But the ability to crop can transform a meh picture into a stunning one. Why not "cheat" and benefit from the ability to fix composition in post when the shooting conditions and the lens on the camera did not allow the perfect framing when you triggered the shutter? There again, 45 or 60 or 100 MP beat 24MP.
Z6 also had memo note
thank you, yes the Z6, Z6ii and Z8, plus Z9 all have voice meno
I use many years products from Dawntech. They have GPS options for Nikon. I have for my D850 and Z5. It is fast and accurate.
Currently shooting a Z6....among others. Headed to a local camera store, today. Nikon reps making their semi-annual demonstrations. Thank you for your thoughtful analysis.
thank you Bob, I hope you enjoy your time with your Nikon reps
Totally agree with buying from the local camera shop instead of online
I only buy online from reputable retailers where the price difference is just too vast
I’m tempted to buy the 6iii but I’ll wait a bit longer for the 7iii.
Good luck with your future endeavour

Hello Mark, very much like your informative video. I still own a GP-1 device from the old D800 days and would love using it on my current Z6iii. However, the cable terminates with a round pin connector, which does not work with the current Z6. I have been looking high and low on the internet for a suitable replacement but cannot seem to find any. Would you have any good advice for me? Thanks very much and cheers!
Here’s the manual - cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/GP-1.pdf
The cable you require is the GP1-CA90 still available from a Nikon dealer
@@markology Thank you so much, Mark. Really appreciate your assistance. Will try my luck with the dealer. Cheers!
Great video Mark. Keep going.
Thanks 👍
thank you for your introdution to the Z6iii. Mine arrives this afternoon.
hope you enjoy yours as much as I am with mine
It is a really nice camera indeed. I bought one a month ago and I’m still learning it but the first videos I did with it came out really great. The mic quality is impressive to a point that in some situations I only recorded with it. And the photos look really nice as well. My stills camera is a Sony, but I am growing fond of Nikon’s image and video quality, not to speak about ergonomics. It feels easy to use and very comfortable on the hand. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You’ve got a sub :)
great news, thank you

Thank you for this tips!
Any time!
Hey Mark I really like your videos, May I know if I want a fullframe camera, should I buy z7ii now or wait for z7iii? and how long do you believe nikon will release Z7iii. Thanks!
I would wait for Z7III, perhaps the end of 2024, then you can choose Z7II or Z7III as an educated buyer, you will be able to buy a new Z7II at a reduced price, because dealers will be clearing stock.
I pulled the trigger and upgraded to a 6-3 3 weeks ago and can honestly say I wish I did not wait any longer. It just works so well compared to my Z6/Z50. Now my choice is which one to sell of the two older ones. I think the Z50 is my favorite to have really small camera to carry and use for reach on my TELE work.
One question to ask Z50II as it's due soon, sell both Z6 and Z50
7:53 how do you takes these off?
after removing the black cover which just picks off, you are left with a triangle split ring, which you split and rotate over the lug and it pops off.
@@markology thank you
Mark, thanks for the video. Subscribed and hope for more videos like this. Couple of questions: the limited DR of the camera with ISO less than 800 is being discussed on the internet - does it bother you for low light shooting and landscape? The auto ISO - would it be better to assign it to one of the function buttons to turn it on and off rather than using menus?
Auto ISO, hold the ISO button down and turn from dial.
Hello! Have you tried using the Z63 for astro photography yet? And if you have, could you share some of the images, please?
Yes, just back from trip, will publish soon
Thank you for the excellent review greets from Belgium 🇧🇪 👌😉
thank you
💯🇹🇷⭐️👍I have 1 of this NIKON f3 device, it is very clean and for sale, if anyone is interested, there is a video on my RUclips channel.
Mine is on order and should be here in a couple days, moving back to Nikon from Sony and excited for it and Nikons colour rendition. Thanks for the video Mark!
Good choice!
Mark, my wish list for the Z7iii is similar to yours but I’d like to see it have the Z8/Z9 four-way flip screen. That would be the ideal camera for me. Fingers are crossed!
That would be nice, however, I don't believe it will happen as the current size of the camera is not big enough. Also, you have to think about the business model reasons to spend more money. LOL
@@markology Sadly, Mark, I think you are right. I reluctantly agree with you because it would be a lot easier and less costly to just use the Z6iii body; however, I believe the target market for the Z7iii would include landscape shooters, many of whom abhor the fully articulated screen of the Z6iii according to online comments. Also, if Fuji can put the four-way screen in the X-T5 and Sony can put the multi-way screen in the A7RV, then Nikon should be able to engineer a way to put the Z8 screen on the Z7iii. 🙂
Also the same lower-profile round eyecup / viewfinder.
Just get the Z8.
@@markologyThe camera does not have to increase in size. Just look at the Fuji XT5, which has a fantastic screen similar to the Nikon Z8.
Excellent and informative video Mark. Most of my photography is around Devon and Cornwall and I normally know exactly where I took the image from recognition. However, I have stacks of pictures from Scotland in my archives and seldom know where I was!
thank you
Nikon GP1 and GP1A both work with Z6III and Z8. Z8 need the 12-pin cable.
Do you know if the gp1 will work on the Z6iii ?
I can't see why not, its support in the manual
@@markology
I can confirm that the GP-1 and CA90 cable do work work the Nikon Z6iii

How accurate could you track shots a ross internals if a building ?
Sorry, I don't understand your question. If in a building, you won't be able to as you need line of sight for a Global positioning satellite
@@markology ah yep think youve answered my question - so it wont work at all in a building (e.g. train station)
Thanks for this info. Absurd that GPS has been in even the cheapest phones for a decade, but is still not integrated in most high end cameras.
Right and snapbridge connection iOS is crap
Only available in Nikon Z9 terminally
Just subbed keep up the great work! GOD Bless
Thanks for the sub!
Mark, you seem to be living in a time/brain bubble. The z8 has been out and reviewed for some time now and you publish this much delayed video about long past rumors. For your 6 subscribers sake, please get your act together.
This video was an old video of mine, with over 800,000 views, 4000 comments, the majority of which being positive. I've moved it from my main channel, as that's more about the image and not gear.
