- The Wyle House, a masterpiece conceived by architect John Rex in 1961, stands as an architectural marvel. Reflecting the hues and textures of the vast 3,000-acre ranch that cradles it, the house retains its original furniture, meticulously crafted by the renowned woodworker Sam Maloof, exclusively for this residence.
Originally acquired in 1959, the land, then a third of its current size, laid the foundation for a thriving farm initiated by Stephen's father. The introduction to architect John Rex came through a family friend, who, upon learning of the family's desire to build a home in such a remote location, found the idea intriguingly audacious. Constructed primarily from wood, glass, and on-site dynamited granite, the house emerged a few hundred yards from where the stone was sourced. Stephen fondly recounts his summers spent dynamiting stone and contributing to the foundation work with his family. The memories etched in his childhood are woven with adventures at the ranch - camping, horseback riding, and cherished family moments in the home.
The Modernist design of the house, tinged with a Japanese-esque influence possibly from one of John Rex's draftsmen, features expansive floor-to-ceiling windows and a distinctive umbrella-shaped roof. While granite elements abound, the conversation pit partnered with a fireplace stands out as the home's focal point.
Today, this architectural gem invites visitors through Airbnb, offering an experience that falls nothing short of breathtaking. From the architectural brilliance and period furniture to the meticulously landscaped surroundings, the Wyle House provides a retreat that transports you away from it all, enveloped in the tranquility of the 3,000-acre ranch and its endless panoramic views.

It’s such a beautiful and unique house! 👏🏼👏🏼🤩
so rarely do you see a house of such beauty and even rarer the oppotunity to stay in that house. Thank you for making this available for others to experience it
Fr
I am blown away. The energy of that place can be felt through the screen.
One of my favorite films you've done so far. Not only paying tribute to the home itself, but diving into the history of the owner and his family. Thank you!
It has this awesome mix of Japanese and mid-century that brings out this rustic element common to both styles. The living room looks very much like a modern, 21st century take on midcentury with its scale, the amount of glass and volumes that you rarely find in authentic 1960s architecture. The owner is deservingly proud of where he lives.
Wow..Wow..Wow... what an incredible house! Thank you for sharing this incredible space.
Holy Moses, can a house be more beautiful, stately, warm and inviting all at the same time?
The house is very beautiful, internally as well as in relation to its environment. But the story behind it, how it came about, the caring of the original patriarch and the hope that this care and thoughtfulness can be passed on, turns it into a complex and delightfully nuanced treasure. Thanks for sharing!
It is GORGEOUS
The Maloof furniture is exquisite
I know I say it every time, but goddamn this is one of the most beautiful homes you’ve featured!
A whole house full of Maloof furniture. Amazing.
What a great attitude to have for such a timeless property.
Would love buy the Diamond Tail Ranch, the Reservation Ranch and the Steeley Mountain Ranch some day.
We owe such a debt to those who commissioned and created work such as this.
Maybe the debt it owed to the One who created the surroundings in which the house is privileged to be a part of. Without which this structure would be cold and lifeless. As would we all be.
Beautiful architecture with an incredible setting . The ranch with autumnal foliage and surrounding hills and mountains is stunning . Must be such a peaceful experience riding a horse 🐎 around the land and seeing such beauty . The house and furniture are perfect for the setting . You can definitely see the Japanese and Asian influence . The stones quarried from the site makes the house and ties everything together perfectly . I'm in awe .
That fireplace is friggin AWESOME!!!
The original furniture by Sam Maloof and the rich family history adds a layer of charm to this architectural gem 🧡
Another amazing installment! Thank you for featuring the Central Valley we have a good amount of Mid Century Architecture here!
I was fortunate to work for Wyle in the late 90's. No exaggeration when I say it was the best company I had the opportunity to work for. What a treat to see where Mr Wyle spent his time away from the hustle & bustle. ❤
This was a poignant video, thank you.
I appreciate the clear lines of the house & how it dovetails with Mother Nature & not in grandiose opposition.
Most of all: I appreciated how this gentleman spoke of his parents and family friends, how the house came into itself & his hopes for his family -- now, and in the future. We need more of this grace.
Absolute greatness 🤍
Beautiful craftsmaship. The house is like an autumn painting.
Thank you for opening your home to the public.
Wyle-House is a national treasure.
I used to do service work on that ranch. I always enjoyed working with Tom there.
What a project!
Magical , all the natural colours , the light the stone and timber , Id love to head there for the experience .
Wonderful content.
To see so many MCM treasures in one amazingly designed house is rare. A national treasure to be protected indeed!
it has a soul, beautiful home
What a wonderful episode. Thank you and Stephen!
Not the typical 60’s low ceilings
What a beautiful home and lovely video. thanks for sharing
Amazing! So well kept.
Thank you for sharing this with us!
Spectacular house! Distinctive and unique design. Probably my favorite home I've seen on this channel. The fact that it was designed by an architectural firm that specialized in commercial buildings is apparent in the extra large volume of the great room, which was highly unusual in 1961 but is now almost a requirement for ultra high-end contemporary homes in places like Beverly Hills.
What a beautiful home.
Amazing work as always
Architettura,bellezza,pace dell'anima.Grazie!
Just in love with this house
What a sense of PLACE! It exudes harmony from the beautiful way the structure is exposed and how the building sits so perfectly in the landscape. One can almost hear all the past conversations in the "conversation pit"
Beautiful home! Thank you!
It’s beautiful!! I love these mid century homes and the furniture is awesome!

Upon a deep dive into this channel, I immediately unsubscribed from the AD channel. I just love the tone and pace of your pieces so much. Why not subscribe to both? I'm just not satisfied with their content anymore in that comparative light. I could watch each of your pieces again and again. Keep up the great work. 🥰
Wow. Such a beautiful presentation and home.
Absolutely beautiful!

Stunning home, and I love the lack of pretense explaining how the property came to be
Amazing

Beautiful legacy
Lovely house 😊😊😊

Tiene algo de excéntrica y es a la vez cálida y original. Gracias por compartir la belleza de esta propiedad y lugar.
Beautiful but spooky.
Looking forward to this one, notification turned on :D
Modern House and big Area ❤
Twin Peaks (cult TV series) meets Scandinavia. Love it. 😊
So cool
Lucky man!
wow what a house. not sure his father was smart about gifting 30 people some of the ranch unless it didn't include the house.
I think the house is left to Stephen Wyle and his sister and the land is gifted to 30 other relatives. I hope none of the people sell off their share of the ranch to outsiders - perhaps the family members should get the first refusal. It would be a shame if some grubby, vulgarian billionaire bought it and tore down the house to build a gigantic billionaire's lair.
это потрясающая история
Чудесный дом. Шикарные виды из окон. Прошло больше 60 лет, а здание не утеряло привлекательности и актуальности.
Such an amazing property and blending of styles. Are those early Sam Maloof pieces (Dining table, benches, pedestal table and chairs)?
The Japanese art of the simple beauty
I like the design. It looks like an Albatross though.
This is a beautiful designed house. However, the score in the production is kinda eerie.
As a man with property and in my mid 40s with a big family, I hope that my family, future grandkids will all be able to share and enjoy. I felt the man’s hesitancy on what some of the shareholders will do to the property. So many people sell out for short gains.
❤
Anybody know who makes those sofas?
Can someone explain the part where he says that he gifted shares of the ranch to his 30 some odd family members? Is he saying that he created a contract in which the 30 or so people all owned part of the ranch and could decide to "cash out" if they wanted to. Does the person with the highest share get to live there? I have never heard of such a thing and don't even know where to begin in googleing it.
I don't know either but you could try looking up "limited partnership"
Sounds like a potentially massive headache, especially as it appreciates in value
may have left in a trust?
I think the house belongs to the son, Stephen Wyle but the land is given to members of the family as shares. I am sure the property is held in a trust with certain stipulations regarding if/when someone wants to "cash out" in the future.
Very dark, but interesting design. I wouldn’t want to live in such a dark interior.
Dark? It is full of light from all the huge windows!
Now, that you've... don't start to forget when you see and ✨'s
This house is gooorgeous. Did anyone else get kinda patriarchal/aristocratic vibes though?
Very aristocratic, but in the best way. Great house and gentleman.
No, but a certain gentleman-farmer-rancher type vibes.
@@jamesallison4875 there are great ways to be aristocratic!?
now listen here if this glass house get destroyed by tornadoes you need a glass replacement for the Glass-house and it's not a greenhouse it's glass house.
Didn't love this house. I usually love open space houses. But this one had a weird vibe.
какой смысл показывать интерерьер при одинаковой картинке на 70% времени...
ulme
Very nice modern and cozy house in a fantastic natural environment.
