  • I documented the build process of my cabin in Costa Rica from beginning to end. We built the whole thing from bare land to finished house in three and a half months. I have never built a house before but I had a team of builders who helped me bring this concept to life. I love working with my hands so despite, or more like because, this was a lot of hard work, it was so so rewarding.
If you like the cabin and want the design plans, those can be purchased here. It could save you many many hours of design and thousands on an architect.

My two different builds are up on Airbnb. Save them for your next trip down to Costa Rica:

This build is a dream. Its modern style, natural elements, the glass, and place in the jungle looking over the canopy to the ocean. Well done to everyone involved. You really accomplished something special.

Tropical rain is quite strong and wind can blow in a lot of rain from the side. Since the front wall is quite high, I think it would have been better to extend the roof way more to the front to prevent rain hitting the glass windows at the front bottom. It's also a bit difficult to make everything waterproof since those windows need tiny gaps everywhere. Maybe difficult to maintain this structure in this kind of weather, but it looks pretty cool.

Amazing Sasha what a journey and inspiration! Cement is an additive of concrete. You refer to cement a few times in the video however it’s actually concrete you are pouring. Cement is like the flour when you bake a cake, it’s an additive. When you mix cement, aggregate, lime and water it then becomes concrete.

Congratulations! You obviously did your homework and had planned ahead for every stage of construction. We are currently in the process creating a one bedroom bungalow on a tiny island in the West Indies. We had to build with all wood as the cost of transportation there would have been prohibitive to use concrete and steel. Your building time was amazingly fast, because we are building ourselves (and we work), along with two guys, it’s now two years! Thanks for the inspiration!

  • @MrBezyBez

I've been thinking about this all weekend and I have to admit it looks great and the price is great but there are a ton of issues with this build from a safety and engineering point of view. The local building codes must be very lax to allow this.
    1. The entire envelope is missing a vapor barrier.
    2. No insulation in the walls.
    3. It's a fire hazard - aluminum wiring is illegal for a reason - it expands and contracts to the point it wiggles itself free from connection points. The wood siding is flammable and since the walls are hollow, they will feed the wood fire. The whole thing is a tinder box with cheap wiring. What's more is the electrical panel is beside THE ONLY WAY TO ESCAPE. If the panel catches fire and you're in the loft, your stair is over the fire and you need to jump, but the door out is also next to the panel and the only other door is the patio... man this a death trap.
    4. No AC - when combined with the lack of insulation and vapor barrier, that means that this place will have constant moisture and humidity issues which could lead to mold growth.
    5. Single pane uninsulated, unsealed windows. Drafty and will probably result in dew formation on the windows in the early morning plus allows for bugs and stuff to get in.
    6. The upper level windows don't open, so all the hot humid air rises up and stays there with no way to vent out up there. Does that ceiling fan help enough?
    7. No blinds or shades on a west facing window. So again heat and humid at sunset with no way to vent except the level 1 windows.
    8. No exhaust vent at the stove. This is a code violation in many areas. Does the bathroom have a ceiling fan? Cooking and pooping smells might be an issue.
    9. No guardrails at the deck. Looks sick but dangerous.
    10. Does the roof leak yet? You have unsealed screws penetrating the sheet metal but you don't have a waterproofing barrier. I'd recommend you atleast get up there and seal every single screw point.
    11. Thermal bridging everywhere - expecially the window frames.
This is more of a tent/ shed than a house by modern safety and engineering standards imo. While impressive, there will be serious issues in 5-10 years, if it doesn't burn down first.

    • @nataliefenelon4796
      @nataliefenelon4796 5 месяцев назад +6

Wow! You must be such a positive and supportive person to have around.
Tent? Have you lost your mind?
It is a wonder the world isn't burning to a cinder given the millions of "tents" in Africa, SE Asia, South America, the Pacific islands and so on.
      No aircon...oh dear...

    • @SashaJuliardD
      @SashaJuliardD  5 месяцев назад +39

Hey There! I am glad you spent so long thinking about my cabin :) Some of your points are fair tho an I will integrate for the next time.
As for the vapor barrier that was something that every single builder here never recommended so that isn't a thing here for this climate.
The wood, air then concrete board is enough insulation and the heat transfer of the walls isn't an issue. Walls never heat up as the wood on the outside is a really good barrier.
The aluminum wiring is just the one that brings the power from the meter to the breaker. I guess there is aluminum wiring in the breaker but not running through the house.
      4. There is an AC, I didn't film it but there is a 18,000 but AC upstairs.
5.You are right about the single pane. There is dew on the outside windows in the morning. Double pane glass here is hard to come by and very very expensive. I can live with the morning dew.
      6. With the Ac and the fan it stays comfortable
      7. I installed blinds on the downstairs west facing windows since the construction. It was a problem but solved now.
      8. This is true, no exhaust. Luckily it is a loft so it all rises to the top while cooking. But def a potential issue.
      9. No guard rails. You are right it's a bit sketchy but no kids are allowed there.
      10. roof isn't leaking yet. I was just there and rainy season is in full force. Rain is staying out.
      11. fair point, the thermal bridging with the black metal is an issue. Ac keeps up but not the most efficient.

I am planning on being a fully remote data scientist in the future and plan on being a minimalist ….. this style of life has always captivated me and I am getting more and more motivated to pursue this the more I see these kinds of videos
As climate change becomes more aggressive , more and more people will be cramming into cities where they depend on having to commute to work
    But not me 😊
I can work from wherever I’d like
Finding property out in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming sounds good to me 😊

Im from Costa Rica from the tropical rain forest part . I can tell this cabin is not built to last. termites in CR are sneaky and eat wood and concrete, difficult to control them when you are in the middle of the jungle, I wonder also how did he obtained permission to build in the middle of the forest…

I'M from Costa Rica (the tropical Rainforest part) and I can tell you that termites don't eat concrete (at least not fast enough to cause any meaningful damage within 50+ years (especially when there are other options around to eat).
You're not completely wrong about the wood, especially soft-woods like pine, however this wood is specifically treated, which means that it should not be affected by termites.
There's nothing wrong with this build - it's very well done!
