  • In a hurried trip that was planned and executed in a span of just 2 weeks, this journey on the MG Passenger plying between Akola and Mhow was important segment. These Puny YDM4 locos once upon a time hauled trains from as far as Ratlam to places like Purna down south. While we managed to catch up with this fading section towards the end of 2016, what was remaining was only a small 291km stretch between Akola in Maharashtra and Mhow; near Indore in Madhya Pradesh. A fine November morning finds two Railfans waiting to board the 52974 morning service to Mhow. This energy sucking 11hour journey would later be cherished as a memorable one. Leaving delayed from Akola; the 7 coach consist hauled by a MHOW YDM4 meanders its way out of Akola as it heads north. The rail line twists and turns its way about, slowly negotiating halt; one after the other; before landing in the District HQ of Akot; which is famous for its Samosas. A couple of Samosas are tasted even as the south bound overnight passenger from Mhow departs in the opposite direction; the first of the 4 crossings in this entire journey. Although quite slowly; the trains in this route make their way into the Melghat Tiger Reserve and then onto the famous Spiral; which is frequented by many a Railfan - the chaar ka aakhda at Dhulghat. The second crossing; another Akola bound Passenger is waiting at Dhulghat; after which the run is uninterrupted till Khandwa. The speed of the train throughout this journey doesn’t exceed 45kmph. For many people living along the line, train is the only mode of transport. This ensures that scope of getting a seat is almost nil throughout the journey. After departing from Akola delayed by 15mins; and accumulating more delay on the way; we reach Khandwa just 10mins late.
