For Capaldi to appear BEFORE he "officially" became the Doctor? Single greatest trick of "time travel" ever seen on television. LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! :-)
Personally, I love Capaldi but I don't like that much this decision of 'time travel trick' in this episode 'cause if you watched it before 'Time of the Doctor' (which is my case and, I think, the case of everyone else), the entire episode 'Time of the Doctor' get spoiled because you don't have this fear that the Doctor really dies since you already saw his following incarnation, as River would say : 'hush now, Spoilers', and I kinda they'd follow this advice instead of spoiling what could've been a great moment of uncertainty
Actually Capaldi has appeared in an episode(fire of Pompeii) which released in 2008(David Tennant's era episode) & also the spin-off show "torchwood" before but he is not portrayed as the doctor
@@lucasaymeric9627 Yeah but its Doctor Who and with a confirmed season after series 7 the tension and uncertainty if the Doctor will live or not is completely gone. It's like a "save the world plot," the audience will never fully believe that the world will end or won't be restored later because if the world actually did die then there would be no more story to tell.
I love how for parts of this speech, it isn’t one doctor saying it. It’s split up amongst the group, because it’s THE Doctor saying it. With every fiber of his being, every incarnation as one.
"Calling the War Council of Gallifrey! This is the Doctor!" That's a wonderful reintroduction to the long dead William Hartnell. He was actually the only Classic Doctor who was given a new line. This episode treats him with such reverence that he seems like a legendary figure and the man they got to record that line sounded exactly like him. They also perfectly infused previous lines into the scene. After Hartnell showed up, the rest of the Doctor's lines until Matt Smith's grim "Okay" was all archive footage. However, it was chosen carefully so that it sounded like each Doctor was contributing to the rescue mission whilst giving each other encouragement and confirming calculations in the process.
8365th Doctor: Theres more of me you know. @@fmlazar I think it's more of a "damn it, now I've gotta come up with a catchphrase too". Hurt's Doctor is, ironically, the young guy trying to keep up with the old men in this scene.
Well, it’s not like some classic doctors didn’t have catch phrases. 2nd Doctor: When I say run, run 3rd Doctor: Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow 4th Doctor: Would you like a jelly baby?
I swear to god this was the coolest thing I've ever seen in a tv show and it's so unique to Doctor Who that you can't even rip this off. This is such a special moment and I'll never forget how I felt when I first saw it.
I am not saying that Doctor Who ripped this off, but this was done in Star Trek The Next Generation. The Episode "All good things...." Captain Picard focuses a beam into the same place in three different timelines that all happen simultaneously thanks to the judgement of Q.

Even now, seven years later, this scene still leaves me SHOOK... And I will always appreciate and admire how Capaldi entered the role of the Doctor: EYBROWS FIRST...
The "Attack Eyebrows" actually bookend his time as The Doctor - in this episode the first thing we see are his eyes; when he regenerates into 13, the "morph" occurs during a closeup on his eyes. They're the first and last things we see of the Twelfth Doctor.
There's one dramatic scene where Clara is just staring very intensely, and the doctor goes, "What are you doing? You're all eyes, why are you all eyes?! GET THEM! UNDER CONTROL!" And like three of my friends mumbled "says. Mr. Eyebrows" in response.
@@MaskedMan66 Oh really? I thought 11th was in charge in Day of the Doctor. It was all centered around him and Clara. 10 and War had their moments, but 11 was the boss obviously, because it was his series, it was during his run. He had the last say during the rescue operation (when speaking with the general, it was 11, who made the final decision).
When I saw it for the first time on television, my heart jumped a little; he was my Doctor alongside Ten, and I was sad Eccleson didn't return for the anniversary episode.
Yeah, the reason "Grandad" exists is because of 9. 9 was going to join "Sandshoes" snd "Chinny" but Christopher didn't or want able to come back so they made the War Doctor, who wishes Ecolstein came back?
I could hear the entire theatre draw breathe when the Attack Eyebrows appeared. They did the impossible and we experienced a future Doctor. Utterly incredible

The First Doctor’s face is from “The Daleks”-with the voice provided by mimic John Guilor-while the Second Doctor’s face comes from “The Tomb Of The Cybermen” and voice from “The Seeds of Death.” The Third Doctor’s face comes from “Colony In Space” and his voice from “The Three Doctors.” The Fourth Doctor’s face is from “Planet of Evil” and the Fifth’s is from “Frontios” while his voice from “The Five Doctors.” Both the Sixth Doctor’s face and voice come from “Attack of the Cybermen” and the Seventh’s come from “Battlefield,” while the Eighth’s face comes from the 1996 TV movie Doctor Who. Which just leaves the Ninth Doctor, whose face and voice came from “The Parting of the Ways.”
So #9 says "And for my next trick" in the episode that is taken from Captian Jack was on the tardis at that moment. I like to think that Jack was there helping to save Galafrey.
There's a theory that in the episode when 9, Jack and Rose face off against the Dalek fleet and the TARDIS gets shot as it's coming at the fleet, 9 and Jack came to this moment to help the other Doctors save Gallifrey quickly and then they go back to the Dalek fleet to get Rose. The theory is helped by the fact that in that episode, the TARDIS is seemingly destroyed by the Dalek's weapon and the next time we see it, it materialises on the Dalek Emperor's ship next to Rose.
"Oh hundreds and hundreds. But don't worry, I started a very long time ago." At this moment there was a sonic disturbance emerging from the screams of joy from the millions of Classic Doctor Who fans all over the Earth.
@@MaskedMan66 My interpretation of why they didn't show them in colour is mainly because they weren't really there and it would have just been snippets from the classics. Thus if you showed them in colour there would be a weird quality difference. I mean even with the small glance we got of Eccleston, there was an odd quality difference. So just imagine if they showed Hartnell in colour.
It's a cheap trick. Davies destroyed Gallifrey to make the concept of the Time Lords and Gallifrey much easier to follow for new fans, it also allowed a new dimension of the Doctor to explored and added an incredibly interesting and unique part of the lore, aka the Time War, to be introduced. This made it even more impactful when The Master returned in series 3 and finally when Gallifrey and the Time Lorfs returned as a concept at the end of Davies era. Chibnall is a hack. He destroyed Gallifrey essentially to push the Doctor in the same narrative arc when we've already seen it done much more competently and with far higher stakes.
As someone whose never watched Dr. Who, it's weird to watch a bunch of phone booths in space flying aggressively into an exploding planet... yet it makes so much sense.
Actually the clip of 9 used here (and later when they show John Hurt's face subtly morphing into Christopher Eccleston's when he regenerates) really makes me tear up. Knowing about how Chris was going through mental health struggles during his time on the show, it's understandable why he ultimately didn't decide to come back for this episode but my heart was still happy to see him represented onscreen like this.
@@jamiestewart48 Ooh, that could've been really good. I'm going to guess it's because the scene that line was in didn't take place on the TARDIS set, tho they still could have used the audio the way they did with the Classic Doctor actors.
They'd love you to think that's all it was. He had issues with people actually making the show too. He never says who, whether it's crew or actors or the bosses, but given Barrowman's general behavior I wouldn't be surprised if he were one of the problems. (And look how Chris behaves around him in the role. Nothing but sarcasm.) They *were* in talks with Eccleston about coming back. They actually thought they might get him; they issued early posters showing his jacket. Looks like he gave it a good think and thought, "...Nah."

A small but impressive part of this scene is so impressive because it easily flies completely under the radar, at least for casual viewer. "Calling the war council of Gallifrey" was never spoken by (first Doctor) William Hartnell, in fact the name of the Doctor's home planet wasn't even established until the third Doctor era. John Guilor, a voice actor famous for his impression of Harnell, provided the new dialogue.
@@NiennaFan1why didn’t they get the first doctor? I don’t know, maybe it has something to do with the fact that he died. Just a thought. Not like he died in 1975.
See, now THIS is Doctor Who. So emotional, so triumphant, so awesome. Also, the "all 13" line is underappreciated, because that is the ONE THING they all thought was literally impossible, an immovable law of their species.
They clearly have the power to grant extra regenerations though, so I doubt it's unprecedented. Also, 13 is the magic number. Since they have no reason to know that Tennant's doctor burned a whole extra regeneration, they have no reason to suspect that he didn't just regenerate the usual number of times.
Technically time lord's have twelve times they can regenerate, but that means thirteen faces in total. However, the doctor had already used all twelve of his regenerations at this point (iirc ten regenerates but doesn't change face or something like that), so it was in fact impossible, just not in the way you were thinking :)
@@J75Pootle Ten created a clone of himself with his "handy spare hand" when regenerating once during an invasion by the Daleks when Donna was his companion. Moffat counted that as a full regeneration.
@@Streality13 true, but my headcanon is that when they forced the doctor to regenerate into Hartnell's doctor and stripped them if their memories they also imposed the 12 regenerations/13 faces rule. Imagine if they hadn't: the doctor (who I would assume the timelords hoped would just end up being some background bureaucrat or something) dies for the 13th time but still somehow regenerates, then they have to come up with some excuse as to how that happened, it would be a whole PR mess lol. Also it's obvious that they were physically capable of restricting the number of regenerations because in the timeless cold episode they state how they deliberately limited it to 12 when they gave it to the general population
Such a pity Ecclecstone refused to play in this episode. I would have loved to see Capldi runite with old doctors, especially 8 and 9. I don't think that will ever happen :'(

I just wish they'd used some more classic Who footage as we barely saw the classic Doctors and there is enough footage of them to include a close-up shot.
Capaldi is my favourite doctor. To think that in the beginning I was exactly like Clara and mourning Matt Smith, angry at this ...old... scottish man. Long live 12 !! He made so many great speaches!
I just realized. This is the moment Gallifrey knew they had to grant the Doctor more Regerations. Matt Smith was number TWELVE. At this point, the FINAL Regeneration. But the thrower of the Switch that saved their world was Number 13. Thus granting him more Regerations became a Fixed Point, if they didn't, the resulting paradox would annihilate the universe. The Doctor more or less RIGGED THE UNIVERSE to make the Gallifreyan High Council grant him another set! [Update: Stop bringing up the Timeless Child, this is officially now a What If Chinballs Was Actually Clever theory.]
huh... Y'know, I never realised that... though technically Smith was the 14th regeneration, when you include the War Doctor and Tennant's use of regeneration energy to revive himself and create the human-like clone that stayed with Rose. You are correct though... it was the final lifetime, with no more regenerations available to him.
Nice theory, but there's a small, glaring hole in it. You see, Smith's Doctor was the final Doctor, the 12th of the cycle when you add the War Doctor. He had also wasted a regeneration, resulting in the Meta-Crisis Doctor, which meant that while usually, the 13th incarnation is the last incarnation, for him, the 12th was the last. All of this you pointed towards in your comment. However, one thing you missed is that the Time Lords did NOT know about the Meta-Crisis. They counted all the Doctors, and the conclusion they would have reached would be that Smith's Doctor was the penultimate one. Therefore, the Time Lords giving the Doctor a new cycle did not become a fixed point. It is also not a fixed point because if it was, we could never have seen the Doctor's grave on Trenzalore, since that was an alternate future in which he did not get a new cycle. If a new cycle had been a fixed point, that alternate future could not exist
Fun fact: The line spoken by the First Doctor in this scene was not actually spoken by William Hartnell in any of his episodes. The line was voiced by John Guilor due to the fact that Gallifrey was never mentioned during Hartnell's time as the Doctor.
@@MaskedMan66 "Time Lords" was mention in "The War Games" not "Gallifrey" yet until the Pertwee era. We got see a little bit of Gallifrey, but the name wasn't mention yet until "The Time Warrior."

Something most people forget from this moment. 1:14 "Because the alternative is burning" "And I've seen that" "And I never want to see it again" Even though they managed to change their own personal timeline the 10th and 11th Doctor's still have memories of destroying Gallifrey. Similar to how Rory has memories of being the Last Centruion even though the Big Bang 2 happens. Gallifrey might fall no more, but the Doctor still remembers it falling.
And it ruins everything. Because screw having actual consequences for one's actions. I loved how the Time War was something that couldn't be avoided and couldn't be changed. But like every show they have to go and ruin a good thing because reasons.
@@kevinfanning8027 You do know classic who didn't have a time war, right? The Time War more or less tongue in cheekily represents that cancellation and rebirth of the show into a new era lmao. A literal regeneration.
Not really, this scene meant it always happened this way, but no version of The Doctor before Matt Smith remembers it. The previous versions just knew Gallifrey was there, then it wasn't, so they assume it was destroyed and that they did the destroying.
Eleven: Geronimoooo! Ten: Allons-y! Nine: Fantastic! Eight: Blazes! Seven: Come along, Ace! Six: Aha! Five: Sorry, must dash! Four: This calls for a jelly baby! Three: Reverse the polarity! Two: When I say run, RUN! One: Hmm? What are you all talking about? War: Oh, for god's sake! Gallifrey stands!
If you stop to think about it, the time lords were FORCED by the Doctor to give him more lives because they would not have had Capaldi's Doctor to help save them unless Smith's Doctor regenerated.
Except they would have had no way of knowing that Capaldi was the 13th regeneration. As far as they knew they were only seeing one life cycle since there was no repeat of 10's face.
I think its a bit of both. They couldnt stand the Doctor before. Just look at how the General saw him. But after saving Gallifrey, that had to have gotten Doctor a bit of gratitude from them. They gave up their only way of returning to the normal universe (the time/space crack) to give the Doctor another round on the regeneration clock so to speak. But at the same time, they shouldnt have known about Capaldi's Doctor at the time so they might have hoped that giving him another regeneration cycle would allow him to come back to Gallifrey
I can't think of a more fantastic or ingenious way to introduce Peter Capaldi's Doctor to the audience. Say what you like about Steven Moffat, but that short, ominous shot is a master stroke!
@@Vereid Yeah I liked it better when stories were complex and very imaginative even though it meant the resolution could be too simple or flawed. To be honest I can handle a little magic trick to solve a great plot (like series 10's trilogy with the monks: the end with Bill's memory was not incredible but the whole plot over the 3 episodes was one of the best of the entire show!)
All the actors when they got the role, always said, i was a big fan as a kid, but definitely Peter Capaldi is the ultimate whovian, he has watched the series in real time, was part of the original fan club, and fought to be the president of it, i can´t imagine how happy he was on the scene.
2:11 if you pay closest attention here, you'll notice that when they get hit in the War Room, you can see the exact moment a shot hits the War Room on the holo-map. Pay very close attention because you can miss it
This scene makes me think the Time Lords didn't give the Doctor a new set of regenerations in the Time of the Doctor out of kindness, but rather out of necessity. If the Doctor would've died on Trenzalore like he was supposed to, his 13th incarnation wouldn't have been able to help saving Gallifrey. The Time Lords may be able to fix paradoxes from time to time, but maybe not one as big as to influence their own existence.
@@MaskedMan66 Errr... Sorry dude, you're wrong. Russell T. Davies said that it didn't count as a full regeneration in interview at the time, but Moffat later retconned it so it did. Matt Smith was on his final life. He would have had two incarnations left, but the War Doctor & Tennant's vanity regeneration meant that there were no more left (12 regenerations = 13 incarnations). He was then given a new regeneration cycle & became Capaldi. THE DOCTOR: "Everyone gets stuck somewhere eventually, Clara. Everything ends." CLARA: "Except you." DOCTOR: "Have you been paying attention? I'm an old man now." CLARA: "But you don't die. You change. You pop right back up with a new face." DOCTOR: "No, not for ever. I can change twelve times. Thirteen versions of me. Thirteen silly Doctors." CLARA: "Okay, so you're number eleven, so..." DOCTOR: "Ha! Are we forgetting Captain Grumpy, eh? I didn't call myself the Doctor during the Time War, but it was still a regeneration." CLARA: "Okay, so you're number twelve." DOCTOR: "Well, number ten once regenerated and kept the same face. Moffat has written some of the best episodes of Doctor Who since the new series started, and his first series as showrunner (5) is arguably the best season. The specific problem I have with his writing for 12 and Clara is that in order to make her look smart, he frequently makes the Doctor look stupid. In Day of the Doctor, three Doctors combined are so stupid that they are planning to commit mass genocide against their own people until Clara tells them "no, you're better than this", and only then do they decide to think harder and come up with a different plan. I think they were already going all out. A tiny fleet was enough to nearly liquidize the Earth. Gallifrey's defences are strong enough to stop the current firepower. And remember, most of the Temporal Abominations are still alive on the Last Day. Most likely fighting was still happening elsewhere, and the moment 13 Doctors arrived, the Daleks called for reinforcements, so the firepower increased.
This is where Twice Upon a Time should have ended. Leading to this moment, the First Doctor begins the calculations, the Twelfth finishing it, and saving Gallifrey.
My theory was always that they save Gallifrey and then we cut to 12's eyes which then suddenly turn in 13's eyes. Missed opportunity from Moffat. But the rest of the episode was good.

Too bad Peter Capaldi completely failed to live up to the hype until he was at least halfway through his second season. He was miscast and Doctor Who started going downhill because of it. Honestly, it really pisses me off because Seasons 8 and 9 could and should have been two of the greatest seasons. Unlike Jodie Whittaker, Peter Capaldi doesn't have the excuse of being given bad stories, apart from In The Forest Of The Night and Sleep No More.
@@tomnorton4277 No, the fault was in Moffat's writing. Capaldi has been a huge fan of Dr Who since he was a little boy, and he clearly understood the character of The Doctor. He played the role with extreme passion.
@@Rose-rl9kq Peter Capaldi played the role with passion but that doesn't mean he was right for it. An actor can love their character and still be miscast. The Doctor's not supposed to be a sociopath in ANY incarnation outside of the Valeyard or the Dream Lord. Steven Moffat wrote Peter Capaldi's Doctor like any other because he strongly believes that he's supposed to be "one man with many faces". Capaldi unintentionally turned the Doctor into a Human sociopath who had to go on a redemption arc instead of an flawed but well meaning Time Lord who's questioning his identity, which is what Moffat was telling him to do. Peter Capaldi was clearly TRYING to be alien but I never believed that he had lived for thousands of years until he literally spent 4.5 billion years in the Confession Dial. Even his "sit down and talk!" speech could have been delivered by any Human military veteran. Matt Smith could convey that the Doctor had lived for centuries with his eyes alone.
Capaldi was there. Bootstrap paradox. If they needed an extra doctor to freeze the planet, then the doctor could of never gotten more regenerations in the first place. Of course, Matt's doctor would not of been able to remember Capaldi's doctor being there, due to those parts being time locked.
T-ZER0 Capaldi would of been the first doctor not time locked to those events, so he is the first to remember, which gets back to Moffat's theme. 10 was the doctor who regrets. 11 was the doctor who forgets. 12 was the doctor who remembers. Kind of ironic how the last season ended, but at the same time, was it ironic, or is the doctor just a damn good liar?
"The Dalek's are increasing their firepower!" They might not have known what the thirteen Doctor's were doing, but there's no way they didn't recognize thirteen versions of his TARDIS. They knew they were screwed and increasing firepower was their version of panicking.
Boy it sure is great to have Gallifrey and the timelords back and usable in the Doctor Who universe, I sure do hope that at no point in the future anything terrible happens for shock value removing any possibility of a longstanding faction being used as a plot point.
Having just watched Ep.2 of series 13, we seem to have conjured up another faction of time controlling aliens and wiped them out before we were even actually introduced to them! Perhaps after next year's specials Bill or Nardole will wake up to find Peter Capaldi's Doctor in the shower and the last three series were all just a dream?
This is one of my favorite moments on television. The way they managed to include all the Doctors from the series in a single sequence beautifully encapsulated how far it has come and how timeless it is.
I love how, when the general says “do it, Doctor!” Eleven just.....freezes. He looks terrified for a moment. His eyes. There is so much there. It’s the moment of truth, and he has no damned idea if this insanity will actually change anything. Really says how much this meant to him. He was so very afraid it wouldn’t work.
Well that and he was changing the path of his own history. The Doctor always feared knowing too much about his own personal future and such (see Logopolis for proof of that). That's one of his/her greatest fears.
No he had to do it quickly instead of this freeze moment every second more people dies in gallifrey he should be quick shouldn't wait damn these writers
@@septilevg6897 The writers made him freeze to give the moment more impact and to show that the doctor was still a little hesitant to freeze his entire race in time for however long, even knowing what the alternetives were. Overall, the freeze just gives the scene more dramatic tension and gives him some nice characterisation (something you want to be doing in every moment of a screenplay). I really hope that wasn't a serious critisism, because I have seen far too many people get mad when a character doesn't do everything perfectly even though without moments like this the story would be much less effective. There are actual elements to critisise in this, so if you really want to do that then take a few scripwriting classes so that you have some understanding of what you're talking about.
Technically, there are dozens of things that are calculated by the sonic screwdriver for years and years, like the moment when 3 doctors try to hack a wooden door.
When he says "the Daleks know something is happening their increasing their firepower" I mean their Daleks, the most ruthless creatures in the universe, surly they would be using their maximum firepower anyway.
Well, its likely that there where using maximum firepower but once they found out something was happening they started rerouting power from other sources like Sensors and Shields to add more power to the weapons
the Daleks also value effeciency. At the moment they were attacking the capital without actually getting through, so when they felt the shift they pushed even harder- probably going beyond their effeciency protocols to get the final push in.

And it's not the first time Capaldi appears in Who either.
Fun fact: Capaldi appeared in world war Z as a doctor of W.H.O. Before he was in doctor who
Actually Capaldi has appeared in an episode(fire of Pompeii) which released in 2008(David Tennant's era episode) & also the spin-off show "torchwood" before but he is not portrayed as the doctor
@@lucasaymeric9627 Yeah but its Doctor Who and with a confirmed season after series 7 the tension and uncertainty if the Doctor will live or not is completely gone.

I just realized. This is the moment Gallifrey knew they had to grant the Doctor more Regerations. Matt Smith was number TWELVE. At this point, the FINAL Regeneration. But the thrower of the Switch that saved their world was Number 13.

@@derpedarp9041 The Doctor can be a manipulative son of a bitch when he needs to be.
Was wondering who it was, their impersonation was spot on!
True, Gallifrey wasn't mentioned until The Time Warrior by the Third Doctor Jon Pertwee

Even though they managed to change their own personal timeline the 10th and 11th Doctor's still have memories of destroying Gallifrey. Similar to how Rory has memories of being the Last Centruion even though the Big Bang 2 happens.
Gallifrey might fall no more, but the Doctor still remembers it falling.
Guess that's what happens when you trigger a flashpoint

If you stop to think about it, the time lords were FORCED by the Doctor to give him more lives because they would not have had Capaldi's Doctor to help save them unless Smith's Doctor regenerated.
OMG good point!
Except they would have had no way of knowing that Capaldi was the 13th regeneration. As far as they knew they were only seeing one life cycle since there was no repeat of 10's face.
This comment now has exactly 69 likes. Fantastic!
That's what I was thinking. Also as an added bonus, it seems that the Doctor needed more time to do the calculations as well!
I can't think of a more fantastic or ingenious way to introduce Peter Capaldi's Doctor to the audience. Say what you like about Steven Moffat, but that short, ominous shot is a master stroke!
I think Moffat is great personally, just not the best showrunner. T Davis and Moffat are LEAGUES above what we have now though. :/
Agreed
@@Vereid Yeah I liked it better when stories were complex and very imaginative even though it meant the resolution could be too simple or flawed. Now are stories that are consistent, solved properly (kinda) but... idk that's just flat. I don't feel like it must be Doctor Who when watching them. I feel like it could be any other show.
To be honest I can handle a little magic trick to solve a great plot (like series 10's trilogy with the monks: the end with Bill's memory was not incredible but the whole plot over the 3 episodes was one of the best of the entire show!)
he wouldnt be responsible (most likely) for that particular shot, it would have been done by a mix of the episode's director and DOP
I had the pleasure of seeing this in a theater, and words could not describe the amount of excitement in the audience with this part, it was amazing.
All the actors when they got the role, always said, i was a big fan as a kid, but definitely Peter Capaldi is the ultimate whovian, he has watched the series in real time, was part of the original fan club, and fought to be the president of it, i can´t imagine how happy he was on the scene.

Time Lords doesn't do anything out of kindness; they always have a goal. They Saved the Doctor on Trenzalore so that he could save them
They might not have been aware that Tennant wasted a regeneration. Saying "all 13" could imply that they assumed Capaldi was his final life.
THE DOCTOR:
"Everyone gets stuck somewhere eventually, Clara. Everything ends."
CLARA:
"Except you."
DOCTOR:
"Have you been paying attention? I'm an old man now."
CLARA:
"But you don't die. You change. You pop right back up with a new face."
DOCTOR:
"No, not for ever. I can change twelve times. Thirteen versions of me. Thirteen silly Doctors."
CLARA:
"Okay, so you're number eleven, so..."
DOCTOR:
"Ha! Are we forgetting Captain Grumpy, eh? I didn't call myself the Doctor during the Time War, but it was still a regeneration."
CLARA:
"Okay, so you're number twelve."
DOCTOR:
"Well, number ten once regenerated and kept the same face. I had vanity issues at the time. Twelve regenerations, Clara. I can't ever do it again. This is where I end up. This face, this version of me."
You must have seen that scene if you watched the episode.
@@MaskedMan66 By your logic all Time Lords lie, considering we saw them give him a new cycle. Originally on Trenzalore, he died. The timeline was later altered so he could live on. @@sofyacab Well that's a pretty big mischaracterisation of what I said. Most likely fighting was still happening elsewhere, and the moment 13 Doctors arrived, the Daleks called for reinforcements, so the firepower increased.

This is the first time we see a doctor introduced BEFORE their debut. It's a fun fact to think that Capaldi's Doctor is the one that solved the Gallifrey problem and not the Eleventh.
Makes this appearance even more relevant when you see how Capaldi's regeneration is done. Love the fact he left using the same shot as he first appeared.
Also makes you think that 11 would have been able to sense the presence of another Tardis past his own. Which should have alerted him to the point of his own regeneration

In the novelization this scene is greatly expanded and is even more incredible. It also explains how they did the calculations exactly: the First Doctor started when he arrived and the TARDIS computer kept working on it over the centuries. That Peter Capaldi tease is legendary
"dear god, theres three of them"
"...all my worst nightmares at once"
"No sir....ALL THIRTEEN!"
Capaldi was there. Bootstrap paradox. If they needed an extra doctor to freeze the planet, then the doctor could of never gotten more regenerations in the first place. Of course, Matt's doctor would not of been able to remember Capaldi's doctor being there, due to those parts being time locked.
Yep, But he would remember saving the planet. And that is really ALL of the Doctor's incarnations.
"The Dalek's are increasing their firepower!"
They might not have known what the thirteen Doctor's were doing, but there's no way they didn't recognize thirteen versions of his TARDIS. They knew they were screwed and increasing firepower was their version of panicking.
"E-MER-GEN-CY! _THERE'S THIR-TEEN OF THEM!"_
“E-MER-GEN-CY E-MER-GEN-CY WHAT THE FUCK?!?!”
@cargyllion That's how you know they hate you, when thirteen versions of you makes them swear.
They know ONE Doctor was bad for Daleks. But 13!? That's hell descending
The Master's come back from worse.
eh, gallifrey will be back.
Chinballs: Too Late, I'm here!
Chibs did more damage to the TimeLords and the Doctor than all of their enemies combined.
This is one of my favorite moments on television. The way they managed to include all the Doctors from the series in a single sequence beautifully encapsulated how far it has come and how timeless it is.
2013: "Don't worry, I started a very long time ago."
2019: "Cap on your left."
Yeah it checks out.
Avengers got 10 years of development.
Doctor Who has 30 years of active timeline and 50 years of history.
Didn't stand a chance, did it.
Gallifrey falls despite standing. It's like Cadia.
Love him or hate him, but Peter Capaldi has one of the greatest and most badass entrance scenes ever... Literally gave me chills...
how can someone hate capaldi he was great.
Biggest lump in the throat moment fo us all.
Matt Smith really did a fine job.
I love that capaldi is first shown here as the doctor without being obvious
Anyone else sad that The Doctor spent his entire life calculating and it was undone by one season finale?
My friend math smith is the best doctor and trust me doctor who ended where capaldi leaved !
which life?
@@konikonitrainerwill5969 All 13.
@@adriansimonsen6533 damn it writers
Technically, there are dozens of things that are calculated by the sonic screwdriver for years and years, like the moment when 3 doctors try to hack a wooden door.
7 years later, Capaldi's line still gives me goosebumps.
Me: They is no way DoctorWho can get better.
Steven Moffat: Hold my beer.
Kinda true
The Angry Badger 2506
there is no way doctor who can get worse
Steven Moffat: Hold my beer
🍺
Tom Baker: hold my jelly babies. The curator scene was the piece de resistance to this show.
@@alaaddinserdar6085 oh tom baker was good in this too with matt smith 😁
I still remember seeing this in cinema with friends. Capaldi's first entrance of him just death-staring the camera still gives me chills.
"But don't worry I started a very long time ago.."
Iconic.
Booty OH! I’m guessing the reason they did the door scene was to give them this idea
When he says "the Daleks know something is happening their increasing their firepower" I mean their Daleks, the most ruthless creatures in the universe, surly they would be using their maximum firepower anyway.
True...
Well, its likely that there where using maximum firepower but once they found out something was happening they started rerouting power from other sources like Sensors and Shields to add more power to the weapons
it's actually not that wise to always go 100% full power all the time. i don't think the dalkes had unlimited energy.
Being part machine, could they possibly have plugged theirselves in to contribute more power?
the Daleks also value effeciency. At the moment they were attacking the capital without actually getting through, so when they felt the shift they pushed even harder- probably going beyond their effeciency protocols to get the final push in.
*What it would've been like if Christopher Eccleston had actually turned up in the episode.*
GENERAL: "I didn't know that I was well off! All eleven of them!"
TIMELORD: "No, sir! All Twelve!"
*Peter Capaldi's face*
*The Doctors prepare to save Gallifrey...*
ELEVENTH DOCTOR: "Geronimo!"
TENTH DOCTOR: "Allons-y!"
NINTH DOCTOR: "Just this once! EVERYBODY LIVES!"
Eleventh Doctor: Geronimo!
Tenth Doctor: Allons-y!
Ninth Doctor: (Rolls eyes) Fantastic!
:( stop making me more sad aboot it
***** How about this:11th: Geronimo! 10th: Allons-y! 9th: Fantastic! For once, EVERYBODY LIVES!?
For twice*
lkgrave Tottaly! :).
Can't believe this came out 10 years ago and this is still one of my favourite moments from the show. How time really has flown by
