Did anyone else realize that Matt Smith looks right at the screen, the audience when he says “I’ll always remember when the doctor was me” he was making us a promise
I love how you can tell it's not just the Doctor but Matt Smith speaking when he says "I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me."
Yess, he looks like he was holding back tears as well, it felt so real when Matt said those lines and how you can tell it was Matt Smith talking not the doctor. if that makes sense
His era was full of fresh new audience members, a lot of young children started watching the show with his run. So his words about remember who you are as you grow and change... That's very much, like a Mr. Rogers moment, talking to the children in his audience. Matt was always particularly good with the kiddos.
Very good, Blandy! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ That must be why 12 never wears a bowtie! I was thinking of dressing up like 12 for Halloween, but was going to accessorize my costume with a bow tie anyway, but now I know better. ✔️
I think the saddest thing about what 11 says is that it ends up not being true for the Doctor, he later forgets his time with Clara. It's always felt like more of "this is Matt Smith speaking rn" line anyway though.
One of the reasons I love the part where Amy is descending the stairs is because it shows that after all those years, Eleven remembers everything about her, the littlest details, right down to the nail polish she wore
That duo is so true, so strong, there was definitely something between us... two words and we cry, I hope to see Karen again one day... loved her with Smith
This is definitely the most emotional regeneration yet. Simply based on the fact that he didn’t try to fight it. Smith somehow both was able to portray both how energetic he was as the Doctor, as well as how tired he was.
@@umai5332 Well, weakest was 9 but most emotional one was 10th. This comes close. But 10 remembered everyone while 11 didnt even care about Rory and River and only saw Amy. That was a deal breaker for me
If you remember, this was the exact opposite of what River told the Doctor in her very first appearance. She said the 10th Doctor had such young eyes, and that was how she knew the Doctor didn't know her. One of the reasons I love Doctor Who so much is that they do small yet impactful callbacks like this so amazingly.
@@babachacha8214 I don't remember Shakespeare saying that to the Doctor but I could be wrong. Been while since I've seen that episode. But River definitely says it. It's on her last day with the Doctor. The day she dies. And the first time the Doctor meets his wife. It's an incredibly amazing bit of story writing in my opinion. One of the world's most tragic love stories.
@@babachacha8214 Hm pretty cool then since it's an even earlier plot point I missed that's very important to The Doctor. It's one of my favorite little call backs in the series as the Doctor's eyes always tell the truth of his age even if his face doesn't. Just a great show.
@@babachacha8214 By the way, River says in in the library episode with the carnivorous shadows in case you want to look for it. Its like the 3rd thing she says to him after realizing he doesn't recognize her.
Its interesting cause matt despite obvs being young always portrayed how old the doctor actually was deep down. You can see how tired he is, how affected and scarred by his experiences he is. Matt was a phenomenal doctor.
I just love the quick turnaround from bawling my eyes out at 11’s heartfelt speech to laughing my ass off at 12’s exchanges with Clara. Clara’s face is absolutely PRICELESS.
This is by far the best regeneration in all of who. 11s exit music personified change and moving on and 12s entry music is a perfect reflection of his chaotic character❤❤
Every regeneration since no 9 has been like that. Heartbreaking and then, shortly after, you can´t deny the new one! I haven´t seen the old doctors and season eight and the following yet, not sure how the next regeneration will feel.
There’s something that always strikes me about Matt Smith’s/Eleventh’s regeneration. It felt less like he was dying, but someone exiting the stage. I always felt the Doctor as a showman, they manage to captivate an audience with their presence. Him just dropping his bow tie represents the end of his act, and stepping down for the next one. This right here will be one of my favorite shows ever, and it always will be.
It's what makes it the best Regeneration Speech of all the Doctors. It's not 11 saying good bye to the face. It's 11 (and in turn Matt Smith) saying good bye to himself, cause he knows he is done. He will not return. This is the one speech, imo, that is the actor saying good bye to The Doctor.
"I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me." That sounded like Matt Smith speaking, to me.
I literally loose it every time I watch this scene. every regeneration scene, honestly, but something about Matt Smith's delivery of that wonderful, beautiful line.. just omg lol hits me right in the feels
It is Matt Smith talking. Every time right before the doctor regenerates, they’re asked to give their final thoughts being on the show. A goodbye, basically.
@Nathan Morgan well david(his doctor) stoll had so much to do,he wanted to stay more, while matt regenerated of old age,I actually cried a lot, when both regenerated, but still, david's regeneration broke me into pieces...
9's last words. 'You were fantastic, absolutley fantastic. And you know what, so was I.' 10's last words 'I don't wanna go.' 11's last words 'I will always remember when The Doctor was me.' 12's last words 'Doctor, I let you go.'.
i wish he had stay like that but then they changed a lot his personality, i had the feeling a 12th chaotic Scottish was going to be the best, sort of a Malcolm Tucker Doctor, but then they turned him aaalmost on a Disney character, i say almost cause that only happened with 13th and 14th
@@Bobbyandmog probably had to do with the massive evolution special effects went through during the five years in between. They got so good that James Cameron was finally able to do Avatar.
There are most regenerations... and then there's the regeneration from 2 to 3. Have you ever regenerated so hard that the whole universe became coloured?
I love Matt Smith’s Doctor. He is probably the one I can resonate with the most - a lonely man, hiding his pain behind his goofiness and aloof personality, which is a bit of an upgrade to my favourite 9th Doctor. I feel like the only reason why people hated on him was due to the fact they didn’t want David Tennant to leave.
One hundred percent that is the reason people hated on him in the beginning at the very least because it was right if of the tenure of the longest running doctor in nuwho era it was to be expected but that hate is sometimes how to know the fan base actually still love the show not like the hate most of us garner towards the current show runner Chris chibnal
I was one of those people…. But now? I actually think he is the best Doctor in this show. He wasn’t narcissistic or overly angry like the others. He was the most human Doctor. The very flawed one who tried.
My fav Doctor has and always will be David Tennant but god damn do I love Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor Fun Fact: I call people Fantastic as the best compliment thanks to number 9
I'm not the biggest fan of David's Doctor, but 11 was a step down from that. The stuff beneath his somewhat grating antics doesn't get explored very well, in my eyes, and that leaves his comedy to carry most of the main role and it's simply not up to the task, and when we do see his sadness it's so flatly done it doesn't leave any impact. We only get really brief moments where the script wants us to focus on the nuances of 11 the character and that's not really enough.
"I'll always remember when the doctor was me" as he stares into the camera. Combining this with Matt Smith being asked if he'd rather play the doctor again or play in Morbius 2, I feel like this was his favorite role ever.
I mean it mightve been his favourite role, but what a stupid question, like of COURSE he'd rather play the Doctor again over a sequel to some shitty movie he was barely in. A tougher question would've been to ask if he'd rather reprise his role of the Doctor or do another season on House of the Dragon
Sir, didnt realize that.. its a fraccion of a second: you see his eyes watching nothing and suddenly looks DIRECTLY to the camara. Now I love Matt 11 more times !!
The fact that he looks at the camera, implying that he was happy that the Doctor was him is a 4th wall break that even the breaks would burst out crying
@@TSears2010 Where did you hear it was impromptu? Because that's false. This scene was scripted exactly as shown here. In one of the behind-the-scenes specials, there's footage of a table read with all the actors where Matt Smith starts crying while trying to say these lines.
I remember liking this quote as a teenager, but now as a young adult it hits different. I changed so much since then, I experienced much grief, but I also became more happy with who I am…his words really resonate with me. Because I am not who I was in high school, but I also won’t forget who I was then. Both version of me deserve respect
Coming into this comment late but it resonated with me. I am unsure which doctor this resonates more with. But, I had a similar experience albeit darker. Near the end of my teenage years I realized how horrid my behavior has been and hated myself for how I'd been. I spent a long time in despair and was angry with myself. I tried everything I could to justify living, to be better. Constantly reminding myself of every transgression so I didn't repeat it. Shame and guilt were the things I used to prove maybe I had some hope of being a good person. I genuinely believed those two feelings were the only good things left in me. Now though, things have changed, a bit like the number of people on Gallifrey I haven't fully forgotten my mistakes. But I no longer see as much point in fixating on them. I'm not proud of who I was, I'm deeply ashamed of so much of myself back then. But for all my faults back then I am glad for one thing. I was still able to see where I was wrong. I recognized that I needed to be better and choose to try. So, to my old self I say this, good job.
+kelly wilson whitehead Let's be honest, we would have had to of done so many takes if it were us in the scene. I know I would be in tears aswell saying goodbye to Dr. Who
I always cry when Amy shows up, he's about to go and the last person he wants to see is her, literally the best doctor/companion relationship in the entire series.
Eleven is my favourite Doctor, but the best Doctor-Companion relationship has to go to Twelve and Clara. By "best" I mean best-written because let's face it, it was completely screwed up and they were a completely toxic friendship. So if you mean best like in terms of an actual friendship, then yes Eleven and the Ponds are up there lol
I'd probably go with 3 and Jo Grant or 4 and Romana 2 for best doctor/companion relationship. For most interesting doctor companion relationship: 6 and Peri or 12 and Clara would be a tough competition. Of course, it also depends on if you're looking at the show as one series or considering modern and classic separately.
AngryRedJuiceBox would be nice but no, weve had direct quotes from the show that he literally becomes a new person. So no, That was the doctor saying he wouldnt forget that itteration of himself.
skye crothers It's both, really. What makes that last line so genius is that it's not only a nice way for this incarnation of the Doctor to say goodbye, but it also perfectly applies to Matt Smith himself. I like that a lot, it manages to sort of break the fourth wall but it also doesn't.
To me this is the best regenaration. Matt keeps it minimal, yet sincere. Then Amy appears and makes people cry with only 4 words, and then in a seamless blink of an eye, it's done. Perfect.
9: Went with it 10: Didn't want to go 11: Went with it 12: Didn't want to go Noticing a pattern? Let me add some more: 9: Companion present 10: No companion present 11: Companion present 12: No companion present (probably) Is it that the Doctor is trying to act stronger in the presence of friends? The classic series further supports this as 2 was the only doctor (aside from 7 - who was in a coma) to regenerate alone and also protested. The exception to this is the War Doctor, who was alone and did not protest - but probably because we wanted to leave behind his role in the Time War and happy that he did not destroy Galifrey.
Did anyone notice, “I will not forget one line of this, not one day I swear” And he didn’t forget Amelia. Pond was such an integral part of him that he hallucinated her. This regen could be pretty simple without the inclusion of pond and no one would’ve complaint but Moffat kept sure to include this. So great!
@@YourFellowRNRSisterFan98 no, she’s something else… she’s human, they are not genetically related. But the relevant part is that she was the first face his(11) face saw. She was a little girl when he met her, and he loved her as a guardian
The Long Song from Rings of Akhaten playing in the background just hits you differently and just makes your start crying. For me Matt Smith was the bets Doctor.
I always found this amazing and I like to think it's because in Rings of Akhaten he has his whole epic speach about memories and now amy appears as his memory
Agree about the music selection being poignant & has you already feeling the emotion of him leaving before he even began to change. Especially as we knew to expect him to immerge with an entirely different personality and new face. That was a really great episode, a terrific child actor. But the speach about the power of possibilities a single life possesses, is so true & powerful. Plus, 11's speaches were always well delivered, & able to evoke a lot of emotion when hearing them. Even years later, especially this episode & the Rings of Akhaten.
When i heard that, there were tears. When amy said "raggedy man, goodnight" the whole dam fucking broke dude. Waterfalls, literally waterfalls streaming down my face
The War Doctor leaves knowing he won't remember saving the Time Lords The 9th Doctor leaves believe he destroyed the Time Lords The 10th Doctor leaves believing he destroyed the Time Lords for a second time The 11th Doctor leaves knowing he saved the Time Lords the first time around
Can we all take a moment to appreciate how the musical motif from "The Long Song" (from the episode "The Rings of Ahkaten") plays when the Doctor says "I will always remember when the Doctor was me?" "Rest now my warrior Rest now your hardship is over Live Wake up, wake up" Pure musical and directory genius right there!

Anonymous Gamer agreed. Personally I hate Tenant’s (not for lack of acting he did great). Hated how his first episode, and the character in general, is all about how despite regenerating he is the same person just with a new look. Had to talk Rose down when he changed and tell her how regeneration is nothing and it’s still him with a new face. But then at the end of his time he just blathers on about how he doesn’t want to go and acts like regeneration means he ceases to exist and is the complete opposite of what he had put forward. Loved how with 11 he calmly accepted it and talked about remembering his past and who he was and that he’ll always be the Doctor. It had the refined dignity that I would expect from the character and not childish blathering.
@@joshberninger8355 I see where you're coming from. However I think David's last lines was not only for himself but for the showrunner who was also leaving. Since after the showrunner leaves the doctor will no longer be the same person as the showrunner made him to be through the 9th to 10th doctors.
@@joshberninger8355 thats cos 10 thought he would die im sure. And if not, he did know it would be his last regeneration before he dies (obvs before he was given a new set of regenerations) so he knew he would be one step closer to his death
This is more powerful. He's leaving and it's obviously sad and emotional, but there's a triumph to it as well. 11 goes out with dignity and a smile on his face. 10 went out having a temper tantrum because it's his 11th go and he hasn't quite gotten used to it yet.
I like how each regeneration since Christopher Eccleston has been the actor basically saying goodbye to the role of been the Doctor. I like how he said about people changing to a different person through different stages of their life it made me think and I feel I've become a different person than the person I were two years ago but I aren't going to forget all the different people I used to be
Everyone says this is one of the saddest doctor who moments. I think it's more uplifting and fulfilling than sad. David Tennant's death was sad because it felt like he wasn't meant to go and he was so beloved no one wanted him to leave so those final words and the music were made to be sad. But Matt Smith's story was drawn to a satisfying conclusion and showed us it was his time to go, even if you don't like the next one you'll always have his fantastic story arc and a "Always remember when the doctor was me,"
matt smith left at just the right time before he got stale.eccelson left way too soon but tennant really saved the series.capaldi is great as new doctor great change
I love how he says "hello" at the beginning you can tell he's sad he's about to change but is so happy to see that she's ok, one of the best regeneration in my opinion
“We all change, And when you think about it we’re all different people all through our lives, And that’s good you gotta keep moving so long as you remember all the people that you used to be” - Matt Smith, The 11th Doctor | I want this to be my senior quote next year because this is a very good statement
It was so very hard for someone to replace David Tennant in the role. But still he did that, he did it so beautifully that he became the most beloved doctor of all time.
@@sudenaz619 see the above link, no offence, I personally like David a lot, he's one of my favorite (right beside Ashton Kutcher), and I believe story wise David's era was the best, but character wise I would rate Matt a bit higher than David
@@navalkumarshukla9447 All 3 of em are the best and I have truly the hardest time choosing. 10th though will always be my Doctor but 11th speech of akhaten was amazing. So is 12th with his speeches! zygon speech, where I fall.
I like how both 12 and Clara are panicking in the same time after that emotional moment with 11 and Amy. Dr Who always knew how to quickly switch from one emotion from another
Love how the Eleventh Doctor knows he's dying throughout this scene and is really trying to put on a brave face for Clara, but there's this deep sadness to his last speech, because, while perhaps not as vain and egoistic as Ten, he's still really sad to be leaving. I think Matt might be the greatest actor ever to play the Doctor and this scene breaks my heart every single time.
11th really was the best. I grew tired of Tennant, but I could never get enough of Smith. I hope to rewatch doctor who in not too long, and I hope to have forgotten enough to get to live through Smiths magic again.
To be fair, the Tenth Doctor lasted for what, like five years of their life? Meanwhile, by FAR the longest portion of their life was spent as the Eleventh (he was 907 when he first regenerated, and was nearing 2000 in this scene). That’s over half their lifetime. Eleven had a whole lot more time to actually LIVE, and spent much of that doing easily the most impactful things of the Doctor’s entire life (Big Bang 2, stopping the Silence, and of course being the first incarnation of the Doctor to actually REMEMBER what they actually did to Gallifrey, all come to mind). And then, to top it off, he still spent the vast majority of those ~1100 years growing old on Trenzalore before finally kicking the bucket. Eleven did a TON of stuff, got really old, and fully expected to die in that little village. Not surprising that he welcomed his regeneration somewhat.
Matt Smith is one of the greatest actors to play the Doctor, which is even more impressive when you consider how young he was when he was cast. However, THE greatest actor to play the Doctor was John Hurt and he had the resume to prove it.
@@tomnorton4277 Be careful how you word that. The greatest actor, who also happened to play the Doctor- vs The actor who played the Doctor the best- lmao
So, I lost my granddad today. And this speech... well, this speech gives me some joy. Whilst I'm very upset at the moment, this speech reminds me that you have to move on. Love ones will pass away, but that's just a fact of life. You have too keep moving. But they will always be there, In your many great memories. And you should cherish those memories because they happened, move on and remember, there is still a lot of life to come.
The decision to have Clara there was inspired. She represents the audience here, doesn’t want Matt to change, Matt comforts them and tells them it’ll be alright. The tears on her face are ours. Her surprise when capaldi appears is ours too.
When I saw this the first time on tv I didn't cry (when I got the channel it was near this) but after rewatching the whole Matt Smith run and coming back to this I did tear up a little.
I’m a huge Doctor who fan and Capaldi is my favourite Doctor but the way Smith played this is a testament to him as an actor. Honestly it’s the subtleties in this performances, the slight fear in his eyes, the pain but the happiness in all he’s been in this regeneration
@@sophiemiller9527 I started with Peter Davidson when it was repeated in the early 2000s then worked and got to the Paul mcgan movie then they started the revival
What I love about 11 is how he's the "know-it-all" Doctor. He always has an answer for everything, whether it's the truth or a lie he made. Because of this, he's also the one who's very chill with accepting his fate (granted he tried to run away from Lake Silencio). I will always remember when The Doctor was Matt Smith.
I finally realized she says basically the same last line when she was "blinked" away to be with Rory and left the Doctor forever - "raggedy man - goodbye (goodnight)"
He broke the fourth wall when he said "I'll always remember when the Doctor was me." That's what gets me. That and taking off the bow tie. Eleven was my first Doctor. And while Twelve is MY Doctor, Eleven is my first. I'm probably gonna have a harder time when Twelve goes because I adore him so much.
7 was my first doctor (showing my age a bit, although I was very little), but 8 is my doctor thanks to Big Finish. I've loved all of them though, they all bring something unique to the role whilst tapping into previous versions from time to time. 11 had his Troughton moments quite often, 12 seems to have a few Pertwee moments sometimes.
Last words of the Doctors: 1st Doctor: Whats happening!? 2nd Doctor: You can't do this to me! No no no!!! 3rd Doctor: Don't cry Sarah Jane 4th Doctor: Its the end, but the moment has been prepared for 5th doctor: Feels different this time 6th Doctor: Carrot juice! 7th Doctor: I am not human *screams in agony* 8th Doctor: Physician, heal thyself War Doctor: Yes… Of course, I suppose it makes sense. Wearing a bit thin. I hope the ears are a bit less conspicuous this time Shalka Doctor: Looks like the Masters ready to go 9th doctor: Rose… before I go, I just wanna tell you, you were fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. And do you know what? So was I! 10th Doctor: I don't wanna go. 11th Doctor: I will not forget one line of this life, not one day, i swear. I will always remember, when the doctor was me.
I love the musical motifs in this theme. It has motifs from many episodes, including from “The Long Song”, one of my all time favorite compositions from all of DW. I like to think that it’s the Doctor remembering all the times he had. The dropping of the bowtie to signal the end of 12 was very powerful to me too. He’d finally accepted that change was inevitable, and embraced it.
Not to mention the brass section when Amy walks down really evokes "I Am The Doctor" and the other bombastic themes of series 5 and 6. It really is a perfect musical sendoff. Murray Gold is fucking brilliant man. Shame that he left, but all good things must come to an end.
We all change. When you think about it, we're all different people -- all through our lives. And that's okay. That's good. You've got to keep moving. So long as you remember all the people that you used to be.
Matt Smith, My Doctor. I was first introduced to Doctor Who while flipping through channels. I landed on a certain scene, a scene involving a man riding up the side of a building on a motorcycle. Then the man caught my attention, his style, his flair, his energy. I realized Doctor Who might not have been the boring show I thought it was. I heard there was a 50th anniversary coming so I binged ALL of NuWho. Eccleston drove the show forward, holding the story and showing the Doctor's power. Next was Tennant who was a Compassionate Doctor, he cared for the ones he loved and inspired all around him and I was sad when he left but also excited. Finally some context to the eccentric man on a motorcycle. I saw Matt as a badass so I waited for him to do something really cool, then he ate Fish Fingers and Custard and was immediately my favorite. 11 was truly a kind and pure soul, corrupted by loss and sorrow. Smith could tug on my heartstrings or make me crack up at the drop of a hat. I watched as he recreated the universe, as he defied a locked moment in time. Then Time of the Doctor came out, I shut myself out of all Doctor Who related media so I had no idea he was leaving. When the end came I was absolutely shattered, as he destroyed a Dalek ship. Then it cut to this scene and Smith was still there I was so hopeful. Then he started talking, explaining everything and I shattered all over again. All throughout I was hoping, PRAYING Matt's time wasn't up. What finally made me realize it was over was the bow tie. He untied it and I almost yelled at him to put it back on. And then it happened, and for a long time Capaldi was simply the old man that stole my doctor. I eventually gew to love Capaldi. But to me, nobody will ever match The Raggedy Man Eccleston was a Warrior Tennant was a Protector Capaldi was a Beloved Madman But Matt Smith, The 11th Doctor, The Raggedy Man... Will always be MY doctor. Thank you Matt for the emotions you gave me. And I promise, I SWEAR to you... I will always remember, when the doctor was you. Raggedy Man... Goodnight.
-"Any moment now, he's coming..." -"Who is coming?" -"The Doctor." -"You...you are The Doctor" -"Yep, and always will be. But times change, and so must I. "
I cry everytime i watch Matt Smith's goodbye scene. I've loved doctor who ever since i was a kid and Matt Smith always held a special place in my heart. I just connected to him as a kid and i would watch his seasons over and over again. He always made me feel safe and happy. I never actually watched this regeneration scene until about 2 years ago, so when i finally had to say goodbye to him it felt like saying goobye to my childhood. Which makes his message about change even more profound for me. He was and still is my comfort character and whenever im feeling down i just watch his seasons. Thank you Matt Smith for creating a beautiful and heart felt character that we all cared so deeply for. Im gonna go watch this scene again and cry.
I'm amazed at how well thought through this is. It's very powerful to see the cut to little Amy running up the stairs, and to see how the entire inside of the Tardis is plastered with her childhood artwork to show how her presence still fills the Tardis. And it's all still there when she walks down the stairs to him with her black fingernails and wedding ring. He hasn't seen her in hundreds of years, maybe even much longer. But it's the fact that she's the only companion he remembers that's so very telling. There's a longing that shows how strongly he was attached to her. And then he drops his bow tie, releasing his identity as is supposed to happen when one is reincarnated. And, of course, his instantaneous transformation into the 12th Doctor coupled with the look in Clara's eyes gives the impression that he's transformed into something terrible like a giant insect. At least to her. And the fact that he says he'll never forget a single thing but then after the transformation asks her if she, "happens to know how to fly this thing," is hilarious. And there's so much more. The interplay between the Doctor and Clara, his speeches, the fact that Clara doesn't know who Amy is. It's amazing how much information is compressed into this short video segment, and how much it communicates. The 10th Doctor's regeneration was very powerful, but in many ways, this is much more moving. It really is a brilliant piece of work.
Very interesting way to think about it I never even thought about how much time there could be in between amy and Clara just makes it so much better seeing her again for him.
906 when he met Amy, and claimed to be 1200 something for Day of the Doctor, then this episode took I think another 600 years (at least 300), so it's been a long, long time since he saw her last and even longer since he met her on that first day of his life. I'm pretty sure he was the longest-lived doctor we've seen by a wide margin. And in all that time, in almost a millennium, he still treasured her memory.
Yeah I get but when the new doctor been on for a while you move on. I am loving Peter at moment and I hope he stays for longer because I want to see more of him and I am not ready for a regeneration and a new doctor yet.
it's kinda like a regeneration for us too, used to the previous Doctor then changes thus we change to to get used to the new Doctor then BOOM another regeneration :(
I always feel like the doctor's final words are a moment of breaking the fourth wall. It's not just the doctor saying goodbye, it's the actor saying it as well. "I don't want to go" is as much Tennant as it is the Doctor. "I will always remember when the doctor was me" is as much Smith as it is the Doctor. I find it beautiful.
Well, this regeneration thing and the Doctor's final speech only exists because the first Doctor wanted so much to continue doing the show, but for health issues he had to go, then the concept of the Doctor regenarating was introduced, as well as every incarnation having a touching final speech to have a proper farewell, so I think you're right ;) !
Nils Robert Hughes 7A Because 9, 10 and 11 had a catchphrase. 12 didn't, but he did constantly sit and tell us to subscribe at the end of his clips. Hence this is funny.
“When you think about it we’re all different people, all through our lives. That’s okey, that’s good. you gotta keep moving, as long as you remember all the people that you used to be.” So true and wise and I would never have thought it. Moffat has this gift for taking something obvious or simple and making it seem fresh and meaningful. It’s like there’s a perception filter around the world and he’s immune to it. We see a world of old statues and cracked walls, he sees a lot more. Moffat gets a lot of hate for not being perfect constantly. but you can’t deny he is fantastic, absolutely fantastic. His biggest flaw I think, is that he knows how good he is. He’s one of/if not, the biggest Moffat fan ever. Which can sometimes make his stuff a bit too self referential, self indulgent or repetitive.
This regeneration perfectly encapsulates Matt Smith's Doctor's personality, as does David Tennant's regeneration. 10th: Loved life - loved every second of it. So much so, he never wanted it to end. 11th: Loved life - loved every second of it. So much so, he was happy where it ended. 11 was much more optimistic I'd say. Both of them were high energy and optimistic, but 11 was more... Willing to roll with it. 10 seemed to cling on to the preferred outcome a little more. He was more determined to have it his way - 11 was determined, but when everything went awry, he always seemed to bounce back and say "Alright so that failed, not my preferred outcome but oh well."
I also think the fact that 11 was expecting to die influenced his outlook as well. 10 just wasn’t ready for the end. With 11s regeneration, it’s as if he’s younger again.
I feel that 10 really suffered through his timeline and I think he wasn't ready for it to end because no matter how much he tried to help, it would always end badly for him. He always wanted to do a little bit more to get it right. Like he tried to help any way he could and he ended up losing Rose to another dimension, Donna had her memory wiped of him, he lost madame pompadour after running to the Tardis for a few seconds, the lady he saved on Mars killed herself and then to still put his life on the line to save wilf after already losing so much. David's portrayal is my favourite. Its harsh at times and doesn't gloss over the tough times he had. 10's regeneration to 11 was my favourite Doctor Who scene, powerful and emotional scene. I cant complain about Matts portrayal though, he did a fantastic job.
Ten's regeneration is sadder than most people think because he only lasted a few years, while Eleven lasted a thousand. Ten's life was way too short and Eleven had way more adventures behind the scenes. Eleven was so accepting because he got really lucky and lived extremely long. He lived so long that his previous 10 incarnations COMBINED couldn't beat his lifespan. This is why Ten was hesitant to go and Eleven was very accepting.
I'd say yes and no. That scene in day of the doctor when 1 of the doctors asks how many children were on Gallifrey, 10 says the number, but 11 says he forgets. There is a lot of emotional turmoil in 11 for the things that were completley out of his hands that he puts on the goofy childish persona to cover the sad and despairing old man that is just beneath the surface.
Used this speech for my yearbook quote. "We all change... When you think about it, we're all different people, all through our lives... and that's okay, that's good, you've gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people you used to be." Incredibly poignant... Matt always had the best monologues. I have yet to see much of Capaldi as they pulled the show from US Netflix before I could finish his season, but I hope he was able to fill Matt's shoes and bring as much life and depth to the character as Matt did.
Capaldi was fantastic and had done amazing moments and speeches too (his war speech is my favorite ever from the show), but Smith will always be my favorite.
People always say David Tennant is the best doctor and, yeah he was amazing but I feel like 11 just connected with us more...10 was awesome in the sense of his acting and the way he made us feel but 11 was the childish, goofy, cool one who will never be forgotten...his dress sense, his favourite line, and his thing for mystery was just one of a kind...it's really sad to me that while all other actors in the revival series all got time to regenerate - breaking the tardis as they did so... - 11 never had that which is why most people don't say he was the best...we never got time to process his leaving in the tardis. Matt Smith was just brilliant at portraying the doctor and it's what we all need now in the upcoming series of Jodie Whittaker
Well 11 lived ~700 years, 10 only 6 month, for me its in the other way he had a lot of time before regenerating, but i still love both as my favorite ones
i can understand that but me personally i like more emotional characters it shows that you know they care and David Tennant wasn't the best doctor because of how his doctor acted he was the best doctor for making the emotional scenes come to life, before David Tennant i thought you could never truly act out the emotion of anger and hate because even though we know what it looks and sounds like, its very hard to show it in acting but then i watched David Tennant in doctor who and i changed that view David Tennant was easily the best doctor for me because he knew how to make amazing emotional scenes that was the best that the show has gotten and probably will ever get again
"I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I swear. I will always remember... When The Doctor was me." That has always felt more like a farewell to the fans than a goodbye to Clara. Like he was telling us that he'll never forget the people and experiences he's had on set and with the fans, that being The Doctor was one of the best times he's had. But all things must end, including his time as The Doctor.
Well, he didn’t forget being Eleven, not long term. Temporary amnesia happens when regenerating, but all the memories came back! And he knew there had been someone, but couldn’t remember the face.
And he forgets how to operate the TARDIS which has been with him throughout the whole of his journey! Clara has only been with him for "the blink of an eye", maybe?
Someone mentioned it before, I think the last lines of each doctor are the actor's feelings to the change 9: You were fantastic, absolutely fantastic and you know what? So was I. 10: I don't want to go. 11: I will always remember when The Doctor was me. 12: Doctor I let you go.
I come back to this video more often than I’d like to admit. Growing up and watching Doctor Who, I used to love 10th as my undisputed favorite. But as I’ve gotten older, 11th has just grown on me, cause so many of his scenes, especially this one, are so relatable to me on a day-to-day scenario, especially during hard times. “We are all different people, all through our lives. And that’s good, you gotta keep moving. So long as you remember all the people that you used to be.” It just resonates with me, and I’ve loved that line ever since I first heard it back in 2014. Matt Smith did a spectacular job, and he’s becoming my favorite as time continues passing. ❤️❤️

I didn't notice holy crap
Its been 10 months i know, but you messed the quote up a bit, its always remember, not never forget.
Most of the doctor regenerations are like for at least new who. It's part what the character is saying and part the actor saying goodbye to the role.

I had tears in my eyes the whole time, but when I read this and noticed... That was too much.
I love that he looked at the camera when he finished that line. He knew, we all knew.
in the read through of the script matt smith started crying and was comforted by Stephen Moffitt.
I think every pre-regeneration speech in NuWho is the actor talking
His era was full of fresh new audience members, a lot of young children started watching the show with his run. So his words about remember who you are as you grow and change... That's very much, like a Mr. Rogers moment, talking to the children in his audience. Matt was always particularly good with the kiddos.
I love the symbolism in him taking off the bowtie. To me it means that he's fully accepted that his time is up

"How can a Face so Young, have such Old Eyes"
One of my favorite lines ever spoken too the 11th Doctor, and how its stuck with me for all these years
If you remember, this was the exact opposite of what River told the Doctor in her very first appearance.
@@babachacha8214 Hm pretty cool then since it's an even earlier plot point I missed that's very important to The Doctor. It's one of my favorite little call backs in the series as the Doctor's eyes always tell the truth of his age even if his face doesn't. Just a great show.

Same, Matt Smith is a brilliant actor.I feel like he was specifically born to play as The Doctor
@@whovianjc4342 indeed, that's a very different type of hate
I was one of those people…. But now? I actually think he is the best Doctor in this show. He wasn’t narcissistic or overly angry like the others. He was the most human Doctor. The very flawed one who tried.
My fav Doctor has and always will be David Tennant but god damn do I love Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor
Fun Fact: I call people Fantastic as the best compliment thanks to number 9
But Morbius was the reason I ever became a Whovian

This and the quote from undertale "It's you. Despite everything it's still you."
I can say the same, because it is the truth.

As much as I like David Tenant's regeneration, this...
_This_ is my favorite.

But Matt Smith's story was drawn to a satisfying conclusion and showed us it was his time to go, even if you don't like the next one you'll always have his fantastic story arc and a "Always remember when the doctor was me,"
so your saying that Matt greeted death like an old friend..................

Tenant was my all time favorite. I didn't like Matt at first, but after watching a couple more I was glad we had him
To be fair, the Tenth Doctor lasted for what, like five years of their life?

But to me, nobody will ever match The Raggedy Man
Eccleston was a Warrior
Tennant was a Protector
Capaldi was a Beloved Madman
But Matt Smith, The 11th Doctor, The Raggedy Man... Will always be MY doctor.
Thank you Matt for the emotions you gave me. And I promise, I SWEAR to you... I will always remember, when the doctor was you.

John Cordone I don’t think I ever considered how much time could have passed between Clara and Amy honestly. That’s incredible to think about
Very interesting way to think about it I never even thought about how much time there could be in between amy and Clara just makes it so much better seeing her again for him.
*11th doctor*
906 when he met Amy, and claimed to be 1200 something for Day of the Doctor, then this episode took I think another 600 years (at least 300), so it's been a long, long time since he saw her last and even longer since he met her on that first day of his life. I'm pretty sure he was the longest-lived doctor we've seen by a wide margin. And in all that time, in almost a millennium, he still treasured her memory.
And that's the speech 🙏
I feel so dead inside whenever there is a regeneration. It breaks me each time.
Then each doctor has "their moment" and become the doctor.
It excites me.

"I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER WHEN THE DOCTOR WAS ME"*
I like how everyone's regeneration cycle is explosive but with Capaldi it's like instant lmao
what if at some point they all were fighting for staying and 11 just let go
I always feel like the doctor's final words are a moment of breaking the fourth wall.
But that isn't really true.David Tennant actually could have played for one more season but decided to leave after 4.
"I will remember everything"

“When you think about it we’re all different people, all through our lives. That’s okey, that’s good. you gotta keep moving, as long as you remember all the people that you used to be.”
So true and wise and I would never have thought it.
"The man who regrets, and the man who forgets"
Used this speech for my yearbook quote. "We all change... When you think about it, we're all different people, all through our lives... and that's okay, that's good, you've gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people you used to be." Incredibly poignant... Matt always had the best monologues. I have yet to see much of Capaldi as they pulled the show from US Netflix before I could finish his season, but I hope he was able to fill Matt's shoes and bring as much life and depth to the character as Matt did.
Norkix ... He did
He did. He brought me to Doctor Who. And now he's gone. And so am I.
Capaldi was fantastic and had done amazing moments and speeches too (his war speech is my favorite ever from the show), but Smith will always be my favorite.
I’ve used Matt Smith’s final speech for my plaque on my graduation from basic training and gave it to my mom, and she loved it ever since
People always say David Tennant is the best doctor and, yeah he was amazing but I feel like 11 just connected with us more...10 was awesome in the sense of his acting and the way he made us feel but 11 was the childish, goofy, cool one who will never be forgotten...his dress sense, his favourite line, and his thing for mystery was just one of a kind...it's really sad to me that while all other actors in the revival series all got time to regenerate - breaking the tardis as they did so... - 11 never had that which is why most people don't say he was the best...we never got time to process his leaving in the tardis. Matt Smith was just brilliant at portraying the doctor and it's what we all need now in the upcoming series of Jodie Whittaker
I agree
You're not missing out on Jodie, trust me
Well 11 lived ~700 years, 10 only 6 month, for me its in the other way he had a lot of time before regenerating, but i still love both as my favorite ones
Yes I was born 2010 so I just have a bond to him I win never let go that 11th doctor costume I got when I was like 3 times fly.
i can understand that but me personally i like more emotional characters it shows that you know they care and David Tennant wasn't the best doctor because of how his doctor acted he was the best doctor for making the emotional scenes come to life, before David Tennant i thought you could never truly act out the emotion of anger and hate because even though we know what it looks and sounds like, its very hard to show it in acting but then i watched David Tennant in doctor who and i changed that view David Tennant was easily the best doctor for me because he knew how to make amazing emotional scenes that was the best that the show has gotten and probably will ever get again
"I will not forget one line of this. Not one day. I swear. I will always remember... When The Doctor was me."
That has always felt more like a farewell to the fans than a goodbye to Clara. Like he was telling us that he'll never forget the people and experiences he's had on set and with the fans, that being The Doctor was one of the best times he's had. But all things must end, including his time as The Doctor.
I love how they did such a long buildup and then changed him at the most unexpected moment. Still sad though, I'll miss Matt! :(

'I will not forget one line of this. I swear.' And then he forgets Clara.
He got his memories back 😊
Well, he didn’t forget being Eleven, not long term. Temporary amnesia happens when regenerating, but all the memories came back!
And he knew there had been someone, but couldn’t remember the face.
He probably only remembers being eleven because he spent a thousand years with that face.
And he forgets how to operate the TARDIS which has been with him throughout the whole of his journey! Clara has only been with him for "the blink of an eye", maybe?
Someone mentioned it before, I think the last lines of each doctor are the actor's feelings to the change
9: You were fantastic, absolutely fantastic and you know what?
So long as you remember all the people that you used to be.”
It just resonates with me, and I’ve loved that line ever since I first heard it back in 2014. Matt Smith did a spectacular job, and he’s becoming my favorite as time continues passing.
