The chimney cakes (kürtőskalács) actually originated in Transylvania, which was a part of Hungary prior to World War 1, but is now in Romania. Therefore, they are actually Hungarian and not Czech. We have been to Molnar's on Váci út several times and love it. You should have waited for the crowd to thin out to go in! Hy!! If you'r intrested to try some strange and uniqe Hungarian food and Drink, here is a little list for you :D

    For Warm-Up: Zwack Unicum
This is a bitter liqueur, the original recipe comes from the late 18th century, this little black drink has an alcohol content of 40%, and the taste comes from more than 40! herbs and spice plants. Drink it ice cold and with responsibility!!
    For Appetizer:
A slice of Greasy bread with redpepper and purple onion. Yes! The grease comes from a pig or a duck maybe a goose :D just slush it on the bread slice, salt, pepper, onion. and ready to kill someone with your breath!
For main course: Attention! Deep Water!
I can't fint the exact Englis equivalent so... in Hungary we just say: Velős Pacal.
If you are a vegan person, or just want to sleep well in the next few days, skip this course.
It's hard to explain but, harder to understand why we eat it, why we love it. But after this long introduction let's see what's on the plate.
The Garnish is common, but the points are ,,Velő'' and the ,,Pacal''. So the ,,Velő'' is Pig's brain...Yes brain. I know. The ,,Pacal'' is Beef Gastric. I'll leave time for it. Made with fat( like greasy toast), onion, red pepper(paprika), salt, black pepper, etc. Cook it and eat with potato or noodles. So, yes brain and Gastric. We are not sick!
If you are still hungry, just take a little dessert, called ,, Túrórudi ''!
This is a sweet cottage cheese bar coated with darkchocolate, many hungarian child's favourit, but not just for kids. :D
And Finally, we can't miss it. A perfect digestive drink, helps you to digest, disinfect, freshen up, make you relaxed. It's an all in one medicament. The Original Hungarian ,, Pálinka"! We can tell odes from it, but.... unnecesary. Alcohol content between 40 and 52 percent.( Hungarian FireWater)We can make it from allmost all kind of fruits, but the most common kind is the Szilva Pálinka (plum brandy). If you think Unicum was a strong one, just take a Pálinka for your health, take one more for anybody health, take a few just for fun, and after that just try to take some straight step, or say something clearly.
If you try this combination, DO NOT LEAVE THE TOILET, sure we do not consume the foods and drinks listed above together, but each one can be found separately on our desk.
I hope you have a chance to try it all! You have to! :D

The restaurants in it is first floor are just very low quailty, shitty places for tourist... There is a tons of nice streedtfood, or Hungarian restaurants in the town. I hope next time you will find the real good places. Lets deep dive and find useful infos on the web, instead just run to the closest popular place to your hotel.

No, the markethall in Budapest is not converted, even it looks that way I give you that. But this steal frame construction method by Gustav Eifel had been for a while a real rave in Europe and worldwide. 3:26 You are absolutly right. Originally Nutella had been an industry done chocolate-haselnutcream for bakeries and restaurants as a filler for certain deserts. The Germans had started the fashion to spread it on bread and the smart Italien salesman ( Ferrero ) were more than willing to manufacture it in this way.

just to give you some more information on lángos. the dough was originally made from potatostarch instead of nomal breaddough. these days however, potatoe is hardly used anymore due to cost.

Just curious. Do you stay in the Hilton Hotel? Just checked and the rate for August is nearly 300 AUD a night. Pretty dear indeed.

If you come back to Hungary in summer at least visit Lake of Balaton not Budapest (Budapest doesn't look very different in summer). Badacsony (Badacsonytomaj) is great with some medieval frotresses (Szigliget), you can hike there, has great view on the lake and traditional hungarian wines to taste and buy from cellars.

Budabest bathhouse reminds me of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. Also cols and also a lot of steam coming of the water. Awesome ending!
