    I think that maybe part of it is people trust the label, especially for films that are lesser known , it's like a seal of approval from the label saying that "ohh yes this movie is good and worth a watch" not necessarily because it's a limited edition, or that's what makes sense to me anyways

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  4 месяца назад

      Yeah there certainly is a level of trust involved to some extent. I think I couple of labels are potentially losing the trust a little but there certainly are those ‘dependable’ labels that have earned a level of trust of trust. Criterion and the Eureka masters of cinema series certainly have a very loyal following

    Hey Phill, I don't collect movies, but I do collect Sports cards and memorabilia. Your series on the mindset of collecting and how you've analysed your own habits has been both entertaining and helpful in assessing my own collecting and my priorities. I think it all comes back to quality over quantity. And only collecting what I love. There's never an end point for this, and that's a hard pill to swallow because I think as collectors we become obsessed with completing. And the chase. Yes, it’s hugely psychological. Tremors 2 is a fantastic example-it’s not a bad film, has its fans, and has been widely available for years.
    But when you see Arrow putting out a deluxe 4K version, you stop and wonder why they’d go through the time, money and effort to do it. Is the movie actually a more worthy film than you’ve perceived it to be all these years? It’s available on all the Tremors multi packs, so for Arrow to do this, it must be very special, right?
    I’m sure there are those who have dreamt of having the best possible presentation of Tremors 2 in their library. But was the demand really that high? People who just weren’t satisfied with the blu ray editions and were willing to pay triple the price for it?

It amazes me where these fans suddenly appear from… I’d seen the multi movie sets of tremors being sold off cheap. Nobody was interested. 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Keep in mind these sell outs are of smaller print runs, mostly between 2-5k, I think Tremors 2 sold 6-8k. I do agree a lot of the sales are because of an Arrow Umbrella putting out a limited packaging 4k. I stopped falling for it cause I have a limited budget and I'm fine waiting for the same disc content in a standard case at a cheaper price. It's rare that an Arrow limited contains additional on disc content, and I'm usually not bothered by missing an extra or 2 I may never get to anyway. I will defend Tremors 2 and Super Mario bros as films, I'm a bit younger than you and grew up with both and have always liked them. I think they're entertaining and I think it's cool how much Mario Bros departed from its source material to be something unique and not overly kid friendly. Tremors 2 in the US was a video store and pay/premium movie/cable channel staple for those of us 30s-50s, nostalgia is strong but I'm waiting for the standard.

When i worked for the chain the late 90s early 2000s the target customer was called '£50 man' - and basically would come in weekly and buy a mix of dvd and cd releases. All good films deserve a quality 4K release, American Pie included. That said I can probably think of say 300 films I'd buy before that. Themroc, someone somewhere needs to get that on blu-ray or 4K,
    Masters of the Universe is among the very worst in the long history of Canon fodder, a catalogue that has long since been cherry picked by other labels. I don't know why anyone would pay more than a £1 for it, even on blu-ray. That said I'd love a region B compatible blu-ray or 4K of Michael Winner's remake of the Wicked Lady, a film missing in action here in the UK since the days of VHS.

      It’s amazing that so many still haven’t escaped VHS. Not sure they all need the full 4k limited treatment but a basic dvd or Blu ray edition. I mean, I’ve seen studios / distributors use a print on demand type of process… not sure why that sort of thing isn’t more common place for those that want a particular little known title. Surely more cost effective rather than doing a big print run ?!

    I love nice collectors editions and they help reinforce my enthusiasm for the films I love. I don’t think the problem is that the boutique labels release the titles that they do. It’s more a case of the price point, they keep getting dearer and that will drive some collectors away. I like some low budget niche films. They have more charm than most of the big budget mainstream carbon copy movies. Although admittedly yes some are just plain old rubbish. I think it’s great boutique labels exist for their demographic of collectors. At the end of the day no one is forcing us to buy anything. I think sometimes people on both sides of the discussion get too prissy and criticise too much. We can all buy what we like. Having access and options is key. I welcome the essays !
      Yeah, I have no issue with the boutique labels releasing the more niche stuff at all. It’s more how they’re releasing them (in the ‘limited’ form)and the fact that some collectors just seem to be in that pattern of grabbing each and every limited title just for the sake of that label… it becomes more a case of competition with who has the most or biggest collection over actually sitting and enjoying the movie. It gets to be a very costly game of ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’. But to be fair… all across history there’s always been that thing of ownership and showing off one’s goods.

    Can't believe how 88 Films have grown from a tiny two men, a cellphone and laptop using Starbucks as an office to heirs apparent to the once untouchable Arrow Video, and unlike Arrow Video they didn't have the support of Arrow Films 20 (now around 35) years of experience and millions of £s of assets as Britain's biggest independent cinematic distributor and DVD label (indeed most early AV releases were simply rebranded AF acquisition, a trick they're still playing with the forthcoming Withnail & I UHD)

When they get the right titles the efforts either the picture and content is there and usually worth looking at as an upgrade or purchase if you care for the movie. Whilst I agree with most of this such as Tremors 2 etc - Films such as Super Mario & Masters of the Universe hit a massive nostalgia button with a certian age group - that for years have wanted to see whatever they can for those movies when typically they have been starved of extra features etc as the studios see them as a commercial failure and no longer support them via frequent releases. The Ltd edition moniker is often used to drive sales to target those who suffer from FOMO - and it seems to be working well so far! Mario Bros was such a success that Umbrella are now printing more for sale that arent "Ltd"!

    Yeah these Boutique labels have Hooked people. I do see releases coming and have to question ‘Why’ ?
    Yes I did get Barb Wire ( I quite enjoy it - but I have the Comicbook background nostalgia for it ) but it certainly isn’t a film warranting a release such as it had.
    And you mention American Pie 4K. I really like the movie and some of its theatrical sequels but a 4K limited edition won’t make me laugh any more.
    I think this kind of market is certainly the future of physical media. But it comes to a point where if everything is marketed this way , the ‘Special’ doesn’t apply. Used to be steelbooks were considered special - now practically the norm - these will go the same way ☝️

      @PhillwithadoubleL  4 месяца назад

      It’s no surprise that Barb Wire has its fans, I completely see reasons why. It just amazes me the sell out levels these things get to.
      I imagine some actual fans may miss out because this is limited and seemingly a must own because of its limited status.
      I worry that collectors are just buying things for the label or limited and these things are picked up for the sake of it over the want of it.
      I love the American Pie movies. It could probably have had a nice little clean up and re release but a 4k sparkle… 🤷🏼‍♂️
      I think the boutique labels will be the future of physical media releasing when the studios open up a little more to the leasing options. I just hope they can find a happy medium between something needing a special edition and things just needing a nice standard release.
