      I only have a few, and usually it was only because they were on sale and would be either a) the only edition available or b) cheaper than the regular non-steelbook. Or both. Never really got deep into them and I’ve been pretty happy about that.

    Never really got into the steel book craze. In all the years of buying movies I’ve only ever bought two and this was because they were on offer in HMV and for some reason they were a couple of quid cheaper than the normal release. They were the Karate Kid remake and Casino. I’m kind of glad I never went down that road.

      I still see folks going mad for the steelbooks, just this week I’ve seen numerous posts about The Crow 4k Steelbook.
      It was at one point a couple of quid more for a Steelbook, now, you’re talking £7 - £10 more per title. It just became a kinda silly pursuit.

    Hi there, thank you for this insight into collecting steel books.
    I have to say I’m a steel book fan and some yrs ago I went through quite a faze with them, and as you pointed out collecting can be a stress as you start opening up your package.
    I have had my fair share of disappointments with dents and crushed steel books.
    I still have my collection although not too many and my collecting has somewhat reduced as they can be expensive.
    But I certainly get where you’re coming from as steel books can look so well presented especially the numbered ones , you know with the plastic card at the back of the steel book that special low number that maybe just maybe be worth something one day.
    Well I very much doubt it 😊

      @@paulgirling9927 it all became a bit too much to handle with the steelbooks. The stress and sometimes disappointment along with that collector mindset of gotta have em all. It just became unmanageable for me. Far healthier for me to just quit collecting them rather than continuing to chase.
      Not everyone collects in the same way but I have a weird addiction thing which meant I was trying to have it all rather than just limiting it to a reasonable amount.
      As for the value, I’ve seen so many of mine that were worth a lot on the resale market plummet in value as new editions or releases came out.
      This video of course is just my point of view, I’m sure there are lots of folks out there that have differing feelings or opinions.

    I have only one: Sucker Punch. I’m a lover of tins (mostly vintage/antique but some newer) and the artwork absolutely floored me. The movie was to a certain degree a disappointment but I love the visuals and this is the only copy I have or will have. I also have Anchor Bay’s Immortal Edition of The Highlander in a metal slipcase, Timeless Media’s release of the old Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon serial in a sweet fat tin case, and a tin boxed Disney Rarities edition of Celebrated Shorts 1920’s-1960’s. I just bought Kickboxer on Blu-ray starring Jean Claude Van Damme for $10 a few days ago on Amazon. Today Sunday I venture to my local Walmart and saw the Walmart was selling an exculsive blu-ray Steelbook version of the same movie for $20+ dollars and the difference between the two is only one is encased in plastic and the other in metal. Other than that there is no difference. There is are NO additional special features on either which is really disappointing, just the movie. In short you are paying $10 extra just to have fancy artwork on a metal frame. Is it worth the extra ten bucks???

      I’d have to say nope. I don’t think it is worth the extra when the content is identical.

    I always like to get the best of the best, so I'll pay some extra for a steel book version since I do prefer them, or better still a collectors edition of something where you get the cool extra stuff like booklets and whatever. I can understand not wanting to do this though if you're always collecting physical media as it would probably end up costing a fortune. I'm not a collector though, I only buy things I want to watch, and if I don't care for something I'll just sell it.
    But, I'd never go to the trouble of replacing something I already own with a better version, unless what I have is in terrible condition, or the better version has a bunch of bonus features on it that my version doesn't have.
    I did think of replacing all of my Red Dwarf DVDs with the Blu Ray box set since there are some bonus features on them that are not on the DVDs, but then I found out that strangely the picture quality is worse on the Blu Rays than how it is on the DVD's, so I'm not going to bother.

No shame!), get certain content unavailable elsewhere (e.g. Arrow UK's steelbook release of Audition for the booklet absent from the standard case, The Hurt Locker steelbook for the director's commentary which has never been put on a standard UK release), or for rectified technical issues (Pan's Labyrinth steelbook for the fixed audio after the standard release was botched). Weird that there was breaking news today that said that Zavvi was breaking away from parent company The Hut Group. No idea if this will affect their behaviours and service in anyway in the future. Can’t say I’m in a rush to find out though.
      There’s still a fair number of Steelbook collectors out there. I still kinda see the appeal but don’t want to get back into them in any way. Prices are way inflated for them now too.

  • @jublywubly
    @jublywubly 6 месяцев назад +1

    I've never understood the appeal of steel books. They'll always end up scratched up, especially where the two halves move together to keep the case closed. They're more difficult to read the writing on the narrower spine, too. If a regular plastic case becomes damaged, they can easily be replaced. We can't do that with steel books.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      I’m glad I stepped back from collecting them. The ones i still have, even though they’re pretty well cared for you can still see the slight scuffing from just being off the shelves every now and again.
      Certainly no longer want to pay the premium to collect them. And it also now really annoys me when some releases seem to only be coming as Steelbook being the only option for its initial release.

  • @Justin-fy7xk

    Steelbooks have a nicer quality feel than plastic bluerays. Its like the cases are from the 1950s. Im sure if blueray was around at that time those are the only cases they would have used because they cared more about quality at that time.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL

      They do have a more quality feel but… more susceptible to damage.
      The biggest thing that bothers me. Yes, they might be better looking and feel better quality but generally. They sit on the shelf and you only really see the spine. Content it king. I’d take a Blu ray in a paper bag if the behind the scenes docs and other extras were better.

    yeah... The only steelbooks I own are extremely begrudging purchases where it was a case of the I had a choice of the steelbook or absolutely nothing in terms of a physical release.
    Really don't like the things, sure they look sorta pretty... But you have to keep the stupid, delicate, and instantly scuffed card sleeve, which tends to get ruined, if you want to keep the information that standard packaging includes as a matter of course - and the disc spindles/case protection feels marginal at best for a lot of them - so it always felt like I was paying more for a worse product.
    Then again I also feel that way about most 'limited' release runs of things - I say eyeing the handful of criterion boxes I've got, all with their creased card sleeves from shipping. And the Twin Peaks set I'm going to port over to a standard case, since the 'premium' packaging is both keeping the discs under a suspicious amount pressure, and leaching plasticiser all over them from whatever plastic they laminated the card sleeves with.
