  • Hello fellow collectors, I hope everyone is well. Today I have another discussion video for you, and it's one that I've been working on for a long time. I originally had the idea to discuss steelbooks early this year, but my thoughts often have seemed to go back and forth as to how much I enjoy them, and my view on collecting them. However, with the recent Casablanca release coming in at £40, which I pre-ordered, the shockingly poor quality of the steelbook, brought the discussion back to the forefront of my mind, and so I decided to complete the video, and see what others might think of this area of collecting.

    For movies you know you will see, or have already seen many times before, it is worth it. But don’t buy as if it was an investment. Unwrap them, display them, watch them.

    If you open the Steelbook, and put it on a flat surface, you can use a box-cutter to separate the metal from the plastic case (Just slip the tip of the box cutter in between the metal edge and the plastic, and then gently tip the plastic case upwards). You can then use your hands or a blunt object to take the dents out. Once done, the metal will snap back into place. There are videos to show you how to do this.

    I keep finding DVD steelbooks at thrift stores here in the netherlands. Last week I found a DVD steelbook of Sin City. I'm just gonna toss the DVD and put a 4k disk there instead - Boom! A 4k steelbook for 1/2 the price!
    I bought my first 4k steelbook literaly yesterday. Polar Express for 15 euro. I dont think I'll ever spend much on steelbooks. I'm an all or nothing kind of guy, and I can't go all in on steelbook collecting. I already collect vinyl, so it would bankrupt me! I'd rather just bargain hunt and occasionally get one i really want
    LOVE the b-roll of nature footage. please intersperse more of that into your videos!

    I've never had an issue with damage on my steelbooks. Some of my oldest ones going back to 15 year old DVDs have some scratches. Though they're in better shape than the 15 year old DVD's paper covers I have. When I'm buying steelbooks a lot of the time it is for what I think is cool alternate art. Rarely do they have exclusive features on the disc itself. If they do it's a plus but features have become more rare the past decade. It used to be you'd get a movie and there would be multiple commentary tracks, hour long features of the making of the film, interactive lore info games/books. Now you're lucky to get one commentary track, and they spout subtitles as a bonus feature.

      When the art is done right, steelbooks can certainly be such a great presentation of a film. I just wish we had more alternate art on offer to choose from. It was nice having the two Spiderman No Way Home artworks to choose from. It definitely seems that feelies inside is now just limited to the premium companies, though every now and then I'll be surprised that a standard release has some art cards included.
      Ah that's true, I think it's just the boutique companies these days still putting great effort into the extras on the disc. Thanks so much for watching!

    I've bought a lot of steelbooks and always told my mother a lower price than what they really cost. She says it's your money you work for it then why did you pay that much.

    I only buy them is there isn't much in the price difference than the regular release

    Great video 👍. I agree with you. Zavvi has just saturated the market with Steelbooks and a lot of lazy designs. I prefer the premium release and try to get second-hand copies for reasonable prices. You're right that we are seeing certain films. Just get reissued time and time again. It's all about choice at the end of the day. Would be great to have you on a livestream next year to discuss this subject if you're interested?

      Thanks so much for watching Matt! It's been sad to see a decline in the quality of the regular releases, but at least we do have the premium companies still making some fantastic steelbooks. You seem to have a real knack for getting some great deals on the second hand market! Certainly a skill I wish I had more of.
      Thanks so much for asking, definitely a possibility. I have been thinking I might be open to putting my face out there a bit more.

    Keep in mind that the premiums also include World Exclusive Art (WEA)- which means the art on that steelbook only exists on that release and nowhere else.

      Lol, lions gate has been doing well with slipcovers on their steelbook to help minimize that. Also a neat design can be added to fit the steelbook.

    (Probably fortunately) for me, I've never been a huge fan of steelbooks due to how much of a gamble they are and also as you said, if you're just displaying the spines, they're not that special. The only ones I go for these days here in the US are the best buy exclusive ones that come with slipcovers that not only add character to the design (like the American Psycho 4K peeling mask effect), but also add a layer of protection. Although even with those, I only get them in person from a store to avoid receiving a damaged one. Enjoyed the video!

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies  Год назад +1

      Thanks so much for watching Evan! Ah I forgot about the Lionsgate steelbooks. I should have mentioned them along with Mondo, as I also like that they have the slipcover as well, which as you say adds some nice artwork highlights, but also more protection, and with steelbooks, every little bit of extra protection helps! I actually imported the Hell or High Water release because we didn't get it over here. Also I couldn't agree more, getting them in person if possible is absolutely the best way to go, and then you're not having to just hope that it makes it through the post in good condition.

    Steelbook Central protective slipcovers. Get some. I have knocked steelbooks off the shelf from 5 foot height- no problem when it is in the protective slip.

      This is a great shout, I should have remembered to talk about the protective covers you can get for them. The annoying thing for me is that I often like to keep j-cards on, which means the covers don't fit unfortunately, but that's certainly not the case with everyone.

      You can buy slips that not only fit steelbooks with J-cards, but also ones that you keep in the original wrap.

    I paid $30 for a lovely steelbook the other day at Walmart, then got it home and opened the cellophane to see that the spine was fully split and the front of the book fell on the floor. Frustrating.

    I used to collect, particularly the Marvels ones. Unfortunately (or fortunately for me) I had a number of awful experiences with Zavvi which meant I was never going to buy from them again which, given they have 90% of the market in the UK, meant I stopped picking any up. As you say the effort that is put in to most of them nowadays means that most are not worth picking up plus the price increases.

    I will only buy 4k steelbook if the cover art looks like the original poster art or if it looks better that the 4k slipcover version, if there both ugly then I will hold off and buy a used one only to pull the disc out and place in the blu-ray case version

  • @MrEdWeirdoShow
    @MrEdWeirdoShow Месяц назад

    Only 10% of films are available as a steel book.
    And not every steel book is not just a blu-ray one.
    The only time I'd bother to get a film in 4K steel book is when it's a metal to metal tie in title, like Battleship.

    Steel books are sucker books. As cool as they are, and some are absolutely gorgeous…..it’s just a way for companies to sucker you into paying more. If you like collecting them, I think are cool but not worth the $$ in my opinion. I get just as much joy out of a nice slip cover.

    • @MrCREWCRUSHIN95

      Of course you are gonna pay more- it's a more expensive process. Its not plastic and paper- its artwork on metal. And the orld xclusive rt on many premium steelbooks in one-of-a-kind.

    dont really care for steelbooks or gimmicky box sets ever since I bought the Bladerunner set from zaavi, after looking at all the silly knick knacks i decided to never both with any extra stuff, all that mattered was the content, its nice when there are slipcovers cause it makes it more uniform looking on the shelfs and protects the case a bit but steelbooks are totally counter-intuitive protection wise, they are to fragile and easy to damage. With that being said I just bought a steel book of requiem for a dream cause it looked so awesome lol

    Great video! I was an avid SB collector for many years(I currently have a huge collection) but in the last 2-3 years have basically stopped buying them, mainly due to the price tag. They kind of feel like boat anchors at this point. I don't really re-watch them or look at them anymore. I am kind of in a place where I am seriously starting to think of getting rid of them. Which brings up a whole other issue of whether they will hold any value, especially with new 4K versions getting released all the time. It is quite a dilemma.

    You would think STEEL wouldn't dent 🤦 cheap ish
    I only get steelbook when I want to display my fav movies - I don't like the covers that have NO INFORMATION about the movie whatsoever 🤷
