Rick Famuyiwa In Three
Hello fellow collectors, I hope you're doing very well indeed. Today I have the second video in a new series I started where I talk about a particular actor or director and then three of their films. Today I'm talking about Rick Famuyiwa, an American director quite involved in the Star Wars TV shows these days, but he made a couple films in particular, that I've really loved. so today I'm discussing Brown Sugar, The Wood and Dope.

    You watched some great films in July! I watched Day Of The Outlaw last week and agree with your comments. The dance scene was intense to say the least. I was actually disappointed with Dr. No the last time I watched it. The dragon scene you mentioned really irritated me as they could have easily got away without anyone dying. Great The Raid edition you have there. Its an excellent film. The sequel is equally great too. The Station Agent is one of my favourites. It's so underrated and deserves much more recognition. I'm always recommending it to people. I've been desperate for a bluray release for ages.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies 3 дня назад

      Thanks so much for watching! My goodness that dance scene. The sober nature of it gave it such an unexpected edge. You wrote a great review on Insta! Ah that's a shame about Dr No. I know exactly what you mean though. If Quarrel had to die, I felt like it should have been a much more meaningful as it did feel a bit unneccessary in that particular scene. I can't say I was a fan of the entire dragon bit at all really, except in showing that Bond wasn't perfect and made mistakes, but I guess the 60s nature of it charmed me somewhat. Ah I'm so glad to hear you also love the Station Agent! I couldn't agree more. It feels like a perfect fit for Criterion, Imprint, Radiance, or even Eureka, and definitely deserves a great boutique release, and with such a great cast, would surely sell well. Here's hoping!

    How is the image quality? A few were scared this would be an AI upscale of sorts but the Blu Ray vs 4K Blu Ray comparison shots Plain Archive put out showed a vast improvement and it didn’t feel electronic or egregious.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies 6 дней назад

      Hello, thanks so much for watching! I'm not the best person to ask unfortunately as my knowledge in this area is limited. From what I can see, the image is significantly and noticeably 'crisper' in comparison to my Curzon bluray. The bluray's grain looks quite fine as it is, and in the scenes I compared, it does still look present on the 4K disc, but it's hard to notice at times, so I don't know if it's just because it was so fine to begin with or if something was done to the image. Hopefully DVDBeaver will review the disc, as I think they are the standouts for discussing image quality and transfers.

    I've only discovered Petzold few weeks ago and I've already seen 5 of his movies (this doesn't happen to me very often as I don't watch movies that much). Something about his movies is almost addictive, every time I finish one I feel like I want more. Undine was the first film I watched of him (so I kind of went backwards). Undine completely captured me I still think about it almost everyday, and after 5 of his movies, Undine is still my favorite. I absolutely loved that weird ethereal mystical feeling it had while still being very realistic and modern and almost boring? Undine was certainly "boring" for a supposedly "mythical creature", she still had to go to work, still had to deal with the mundanity of mortals. It was almost like Christoph's love is what gave her back her ethereal essence, it's love that gives the mundane lives magic. I loved Transit and Phoenix as well, I loved the feeling of continuity of Petzold's imagination and using the same actors helps with that. Like we're just exploring his consciousness through different stories but same essence over and over. While I also enjoyed Barbara but I didn't love it as much, for whatever reason, it didn't "touch" me as much. Afire was the last film I watched of Petzold and it was another hit. It felt much more personal and down to earth than all the other ones. If you haven't seen it yet, I recommend it. I'll probably take a long break before continuing to his earlier films. I want to return to it with a fresher mind.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies 13 дней назад

      What a wonderful comment, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I couldn't agree more, Petzold crafts these utterly compelling stories and worlds where you just want to see more, and like yourself I watched them in a very short span of time! Undine I think had a sort of magical realism to it, where the realism was particularly emphasised and as you say, the mundane came through, though with Petzold's great story telling to keep things incredibly engaging. Rogowski and Beer are a particularly potent combination I think! Ah I love that, the idea of exploring an essence in Petzold's films. It's often said that directors make one film, and then make the same over and over again throughout their careers, and I think his films definitely retain a key component which just hooks you and connects on some almost heart level. I was lucky enough to see Afire at the cinema last year and I also loved it. I picked up the Janus Contemporaries release which I can certainly recommend. Also, I watched Yella shortly after making this video, and just in case you want to watch it too, I feel like I would have liked to have known that it's actually a remake of sorts of Carnival of Souls. I wished I'd seen that original before watching Petzold's version of it because I think it would have been a richer experience.

    Hi Warren. Another great video, well edited and put together with great thought and care. I love the western genre and Robert Ryan movies but actually haven’t seen Day of the Outlaw, I will rectify that soon. Thanks for highlighting it. Nice edition of Dr No and I enjoyed your comments. Yes, as the first one, it’s more scaled down and gritty. Moore’s For Your Eyes Only was the first Bond I got to see in the cinema and I loved his era but the Connery ones, with From Russia With Love perhaps now being my favourite when I would have chosen Goldfinger when younger. Great edition of The Raid, what bone crunching exhilaration that is. The Station Agent is such a delight. My sister loves Dinklage and had been encouraging me to watch it for ages, I was really pleased when I found the dvd. And I absolutely love Superman and Superman 2. My folks couldn’t afford to take us to the cinema much as kids but I still strongly remember my dad taking me to see Superman 2. Just brilliant and as you say, John Williams score grabs you right from the start.

    • @goosesmovies

      Thanks so much Neil, I really appreciate the kind words! Ah I hope you enjoy Day of the Outlaw. It was a real surprise to me, though of course coming from the Masters of Cinema collection, I should have known it would be great. I look foward to hearing your thoughts on it! I think my watch through of the Bonds a couple years ago definitely gave me a renewed appreciation for Connery in the role. Moore definitely added a real charm to the role though I think, and you get the feeling that he was probably having a lot more fun than Connery! Ah thanks so much for bringing The Station Agent back to my attention, because it was a wonderful journey to take again. If your sister hasn't seen it, the one I mentioned I think We're Alone Now I can highly recommend, as it's a great Dinklage film. It did used to be on Netflix, though not too sure at the moment. Ah those formative cinema experiences are such a wonderful thing. Amazing how the memories continue to capture our imagination!

    Hi Warren. A good mix of titles. I enjoyed all the X Men films at the time but seem to have lost interest in them now, maybe I’ll revisit some day. I’m quite a big fan of Stanley Baker, even though I wouldn’t say he’s been great in every film. Favourites for me are Zulu (the film that introduced me to him), Yesterday’s Enemy (a Hammer war film), Robbery (Peter Yates calling card to then make Bullitt), In A French Style (acting opposite the wonderful Jean Seberg), Hell Drivers and A Prize of Arms. I do have The Criminal but yes it’s a bit lacklustre

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies 24 дня назад

      Thanks Neil! I think with things like the X-Men type of films, interest ebbs and flows maybe more so then other genres as we are so inundated with that sort of thing these days, and it can get a bit tiresom, but I remember being plesantly surprised at how much fun I had watching these again in 2020, (despite the variance in quality). I can't believe I forgot about Zulu, it's a classic that I've never seen, and certainly need to. I picked up Robbery a month or two ago and enjoyed it quite a bit, I love a good heist film, and Baker seems to enjoy playing a cunning thief. I'm not familiar with any of the others you mention, and particularly curious to see him opposite Jean Seberg, so really appreciate the recommendations, thanks so much!

  • @richardburt1679

    A very varied haul. I agree tnat Stanley Baker is a very underrated actor. The Criminal is not his best but some of his other films also directed by Joseph Losey are much better,in particular Accident (Studio Canal) where he is cast opposite Dirk Bogarde ,and Eve (Indicator) where he appears opposite Jeanne Moreau. A Foreign Affair is vintage Wilder,similar to his other Berlin comedy One Two Three,also released by MoC.

    • @goosesmovies

      Thanks so much for the recommendation! I'll definitely pick up Accident. I'm keen to get more into Joseph Losey's films as well, so Baker and Losey together tick both boxes for me. I really enjoyed Eva, though it's been about a year since I last saw it. I'm a big fan of Jeanne Moreau as well, so it's one I need to re-visit. Glad to hear A Foreign Affair is a good one! Such an inviting range and depth of filmmaking in this haul. Picked a few similar titles myself in the past few months. I hope you get as much out of Long Arm of the Law as I did. Guerrilla film making at its best. The copy of the Taid from Umbrella is even more impressive on your table than the website photos. Enjoy!

      Thanks Chris! Very much looking forward to the Long Arm of the Law films. I'd never heard of them before I saw you talking about them, so really glad I can finally check them out. I can hugely recommend Umbrella's edition of The Raid. Expensive but not overly pricey, and it is an absolute behemoth! Looking forward to your next watchlist video to see what you've been picking up and watching!

    No as steelbooks are awaste of money. Hell even som holographic film slips with the front cover are still better than steelbooks. Such as Independence day or ID4 Ghost Ship 98 and Mirror horror film. Ordinairy cardboard slips are better/cheaper

      No problem at all, I hope you found it useful! It's been a while since I watched all these, but I've just gone through the included booklet again and all the films use the 2013 restorations, except Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot which uses a restoration from 2009. As I recall, most of them looked really good to me.

    Hi Warren. I really want to check out The Beast now. It looks fascinating. George Mackay is great. Captain Fantastic is also very good. I do like my Noir and don't own any of those Colombia sets. I'll have to rectify that in the next sale.

      Hey Roy, I can highly reccommend The Beast. A really mind bending tale that keeps you off balance throughout. I definitely need to check out Captain Fantastic. It's been on my mind recently with Viggo Mortensen releasing a new film, and I'm curious to see more from George Mackay now too. Ah I think a few of the boxsets are sold out now unfortunately, but Indicator has put out standard editions of the individual films so you can just get the best ones without the duds, as there are few in them that are a bit naff.

I've only got one so far from that trio, so definitely need to get hold of the other two. (I'm gutted that I let that lovely BFI boxset slip through my fingers.) I can highly recommend The Beast. Very strange and disorienting, but riveting stuff. Ah I still need to see Captain Fantastic. With Viggo Mortensen putting out a new film, it reminded of it and I definitely need to check it out. Hope you have a good weekend too!

    Enjoyed the video! (and subscribed!). I was thinking of getting this set (except on DVD), but I do have all the films except the "Live Human" documentary one. However, I read something somewhere implying there is director commentary but it wasn't clear if that was just on one or multiple films. Could you let me know? (And also, does it have English subtitles for the commentary?). Also, how do the other special features seem? Thanks very much!

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies Месяц назад

      Thanks so much! It says on the back of the slipcover that there is a director's commentary on 'A Pigeon Sat on a Branch', and 'You, The Living'. However, after checking, it seems like there are no special features on 'A Pigeon sat on a Branch' at all, despite them being listed which I find utterly baffling and disappointing. I checked 'You, The Living' and there is a commentary track available with English subs for it. I'd say the special features listed are fairly light, but I'll have to check as I go through them as to which ones are even actually included!

    • @musical98765
      @musical98765 Месяц назад

      @@goosesmovies Thanks a lot for the info! You're right, that's disappointing they couldn't have come up with more special features, and having nothing at all for "A Pigeon Sat On A Branch" is surprising. Hopefully what there is for the others makes it worthwhile at least. I'm still really tempted to get it because haven't been able to find the "Live Human" documentary anywhere else and really wanted that, but it's too bad there isn't something more on the set for those of us who already have the other films. Such an amazing director though, and I'm really interested to see that documentary. Hope you enjoy the set!

    Great comments, Warren. Three terrific films and she deserved her recognition for them. On a Fargo note, have you seen Kumiko The Treasure Hunter, that’s a really interesting one that references the movie as part of its plot. And I really hope Chloe Zhao will get to make more reality based dramas. Nomadland was fascinating and I actually just picked up a copy of The Rider, which also was really good.

I love that the director used completey different crews for the sections shot in Japan and in the US so that the film has that real shift to it. Ah fantastic, I'm really keen to see The Rider so glad to hear that it's a good one. I'm hoping it's an easy one to track down.

      Three billboards is well worth re-visiting if you come across it anywhere, it's still a powerful film and just as amusing as you'll remember too. Buscemi was so great in Fargo. He's almost maniacal, and the entire scene where he is talking non stop about the other guy not saying a word during their trip, is a classic! Ah that's a shame, if it doesn't capture you I can see why it'd be hard to get through. I'm curious to check out Chloe Zhao's other films to see how they compare.

    I saw Fargo when I was 12 and I liked the police officer character and the town though the rest was a bit full on for me. I do have it on disc and I should rewatch it again and see how it goes as I’m sure I would appreciate it more now. Three billboards yes I agree it was brutal and I haven’t seen it since so I will give it another watch too. Nomadland is a really great movie. I really enjoyed your reviews and discussing the movies side by side. Some very interesting thoughts.

      Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words! I imagine watching Fargo at 12 years old must have made quite the impression! I can certainly recommend re-visiting it, and especially after so long as it will be full of great moments you will have forgotten all about. Bolster yourself for Three Billboards! I can safely say that it packs just as much punch as the first time you see it, and I was so glad to see that Nomadland retained all the quiet beauty that I remembered too.

    Hello Warren thanks. Your watch videos are always up there in my favourites. I could listen to your musings all day. Shoplifters is Incredible and as you say very moving. I've also seen and quite like Air doll. Very odd though. I have Brokers but not got onto that one yet. The Hustler is one I've has through vhs to dvd to bluray. Right up there in my favourites. You can almost taste the smoke in them pool halls. One of the most atmospheric films I've seen. The Thin Man is a series of films that's been on my watchlist for the longest time but they seem to be incredibly difficult to come across.

    • @goosesmovies
      @goosesmovies 2 месяца назад

      Ah thanks so much Roy, that's incredibly kind of you! I'd say Shoplifters is in my top 4 of the whole year so far I think. Brokers was my first Kore-eda film, and while it was definitely solid, for me it didn't quite reach the heights of these other two, though I'd like to give it another watch. I'm going to try to pick up Monster soon, and look forward to checking that one out as well. Ah I can certainly see why, my goodness I'd forgotten just how amazing The Hustler was! I totally agree, that atmosphere just emanates from the screen and you feel like your also in a dark pool hall watching the titans battle it out. Hopefully we can get a 4K of it one day! No idea why The Thin Man is so hard to come by, I had to import the warner archive edition from the US. It would have been a great one for HMV Premium to do. Warner seem to have stepped up their archive releases here though, so hopefully it'll be more accessible before too long. Thanks so much for watching!

    Nice mentions, Warren. I have The Mosquito Coast on dvd and didn’t realize it’s hard to come by. I like that period in the 80s when Ford was getting more adventurous with his roles and style. I’d quite like to see the recent series of The Mosquito Coast with Justin Theroux and Melissa George but don’t have the Apple streaming service. I’ve been meaning to rewatch both The Hustler and The Color of Money, it’s been ages. Nice steelbook you picked up there. And yes, Jarmusch films are great, possibly Mystery Train still being my favourite. I have the Criterion of Stranger than Paradise . All the best

      Thanks Neil! Yes I'm not sure why it's been so hard to track down, I think it's probably been about 15 years that I've been wanting to check it out, so pretty happy I finally got the chance. I'm quite keen to see Witness now, with Ford and Weir in what I think was their first collaboration. I hadn't heard of the show at all until I started trying to find the stills for the video, and came across lots of Justin Theroux. Quite keen to check it out myself as well! I can highly recommend re-visiting The Hustler, my goodness it blew my socks off. Sadly I wasn't keen on The Color of Money though. I've yet to see Mystery Train as the German set I have just has the German subs, so I'm waiting to pick up a copy with some English ones! Like yourself I think it's lots of peoples favourites of his. I keep finding DVD steelbooks at thrift stores here in the netherlands. Last week I found a DVD steelbook of Sin City. I'm just gonna toss the DVD and put a 4k disk there instead - Boom! A 4k steelbook for 1/2 the price! I bought my first 4k steelbook literaly yesterday. Polar Express for 15 euro. I dont think I'll ever spend much on steelbooks. I'm an all or nothing kind of guy, and I can't go all in on steelbook collecting. I already collect vinyl, so it would bankrupt me! I'd rather just bargain hunt and occasionally get one i really want LOVE the b-roll of nature footage. please intersperse more of that into your videos!

    Yes! I love Roy Andersson, and feel he's criminally underappreciated in the blu-ray community, at least as far as I'm aware. Speaking of great Curzon box-sets, that I alluded to in my comment from your Kaurismäki-video, this set (or at least the limited edition) is way up there for me. I really hope you enjoy the other films in this set, as they're nowhere near as "streamlined" and narratively driven as Swedish love story. I'd love to know your thoughts when you get around to them!
