    You get rid of those discs and the rights holders have you where they want you. They can edit, restrict, or delete their content at any time and you as a consumer are powerless to stop them. Physical media may take up space… but there may come a day when you can no longer easily stream that film you liked. There are already thousands of titles that are locked in various formats because the financial gain was just not there to keep porting them to the next thing or even bother mastering to a higher quality than the last iteration. It’s sad but true.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      You’re right, and I think that’s partially a reason I’ve been so reluctant to get rid of some of these movies.
      I do value my space but at the same time… I also value (some) of my collection.
      I do use digital a lot more now. I know the risks but for some titles, I’m happy to take that risk and just stick with the digital. There are certain titles though that I just need to make sure that I own for those reasons.
      I don’t think my digital collection so far has been affected by content removal or tinkering. The only tinkering I’ve noticed is the free upgrade from HD to 4k or additional extras added further down the line. I’ve been kinda happy either way what they’ve done to my digital movies to be fair.
      Do you buy any digital or is it all purely physical for the reasons you gave ?

    Probably best to build shelves in your attic. Then you can rotate the display shelves as needed. Besides, the plastic in the attic might actually provide insulation. What's the R-Value for DVDs?

      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      DVDs are next to nothing value wise. Not even worth the time looking at the possibility of selling. The things i had in the attic space. They’ve been unused for many years. Honestly thinking I’m better to clear out rather than keeping hold of them for the sake of it. I don’t foresee them getting used at any point in the near future either.
      I just flip flop between the idea of having a good clear out and then the alternative of having that massive selection of ever I got the urge for any of them.

    I've been using till receipt boxes, that I grab from work, to store most of my movies and TV shows. They're a bit bigger than a shoe box and each one holds around twenty five movies.
    I used to do the same thing for VHS tapes. I had each box numbered and a written list that I kept on a clip board, telling me what's in each box. I need to go through my boxes of discs to categorise them properly and number those boxes too.
    I probably have around 700-800 discs now, so they're more manageable than a huge collection. I don't regard myself as a collector, either. I don't buy discs for the sake of having them. I mostly just buy things I know I'll watch again. If I spot something extremely cheap, that looks half decent, I'll take a chance on it.
    If I don't really like something or I think I'll never want to watch it again, I'll get rid of it. I don't see any point in keeping things just for the sake of it.

    I did something like this back in 2010... after a couple years I went back to normal cases. It became really difficult to flip through and find a movie without a spine. Plus, forget resale... they are super hard to sell without a case.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад +2

      Some of them that I have are pretty hard to sell even with a case. Pennies or sometimes a flat refusal of a title from places like CEX. I think it’s what feeds me ending up keeping so many when they just don’t hold value.
      The bulk of my collection will still be on shelves, will see how I get on with these folders for the overspill without getting new shelving.

    An option for the movies you don't care about alot is digitizing them. You can use vlc or handbrake on a computer and rip the disks to a hard drive. Then from there if you ever want to watch them and a streaming service gets rid of it you have it. The only issue could be if the HDD ever fails so backing up to a second one or the cloud in the future could help as well. I inherited my dad's big bin of movies and I am doing that for the ones I don't care about and then will probably trade them in to buy a videogame or two. The ones I do like though I will try your storage method since my bedroom is getting filled up with physical media as of late lol.

    I did this with a number of releases with sleeves - and put them in storage boxes (they fit perfectly and the bins seem as though practically designed for this purpose). Honestly, some people with extremely limited shelf space store all of their Blu-ray discs this way (and forgo displaying titles more prominently altogether). I don't think I could do that myself as I enjoying displaying movies and admiring the steelbooks, limited editions, slipcovers, etc. too much to do so - but for some titles, sleeving is an easy enough compromise (even if it's not my preference).

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      I’m with you. Not my preference either really but find it’s an acceptable way to kee a bunch of titles I’m on the fence about the need to keep hold of. I do prefer the accessibility the folders seem to have over putting the sleeves into boxes (I even considered the long box style that comic collectors use).
      Also, when I get to design my studio / movie room (when I can finally claim that room of the house from the kids). I’m planning to not actually have much of a movie display / shelving in that room. I want to try and keep it fairly clear. Of course I could change my mind again but at the moment. I’m trying to keep that collection kinda out of the way.

    I've been thinking a lot about physical media. I currently don't have much but I'd like to own a lot because of changes to movies I love and lots of movies disappearing. I'm thinking that maybe storing on hard drives is the answer to the disks. It's definitely more dangerous as it can be lost.... But I think my girlfriend will kill me if I fill the house with discs.

      Where I am at the moment… don’t let it overwhelm or run away with you if you do start collecting more. Sure, I have a sizeable collection but there’s a very small percentage that actually gets used. It’s nice having the collection but sometimes I wonder why I have such a large collection… and now, a few years down the line. Most of it is worth pennies and doesn’t hold that resell value if I chose to try and sell any.
      Be careful with your collecting, it can become an addiction, but then… it’s not as bad of an addiction as some other things

I made a pact with myself to only collect my favorites on 4k & focus on franchise films for marathon purposes. I'll still buy blu rays here & there if it doesn't have a 4k release like Fight Club, Suckerpunch, Priest, & Queen of the Damned. With the recent announcement of best buy exiting the physical media space it pretty much leaves me going to amazon these days. My main issue with these sleeves is the idea of storing a disc in anything without a proper disc hub that actually covers the bottom of the entire disc. When it comes to any kind of sleeve, it is easy for things like dust to get in there over time, and hard to get it out. Removing a disc and putting it back in can cause scratches, and the 4K disc format in particular. I need an actual proper disc hub for each disc, and preferably ones that don't overlap.
    But I do agree with you on the space issue, and I'm thinking about my potential options for this. I'm getting to the point where I'm considering putting discs in as compact of cases as possible and printing up custom artwork for them. There are CD poly cases, which are basically (when looking at them from the front) roughly the height and width of a CD jewel case, with the depth of the spine varying depending on how many discs the case will hold, and they are made of sturdier material than a CD jewel case. Think of them being roughly similar (in terms of how they open, store movies, etc.) as a DVD or Blu-Ray case, but just a smaller size. And I've found some sites selling them in bulk for MUCH cheaper than most DVD and Blu-Ray cases, especially multi-disc options.
    The idea of storing my movies in anything other than normal sized DVD and Blu-Ray cases is a concept that I wouldn't have even entertained a few years ago. And I would typically want each movie in a series stored in it's own individual case rather than all of them in a single case together. But my priorities are changing with space becoming more and more of an issue. In if we really think about it, in hindsight the size of cases for DVDs, Blu-Rays, and most video game formats from the PS2 onward are unnecessarily large. If the standard had just been smaller cases the size of CD cases (but again, preferably made of sturdier material), that would just be what we'd be used to, and it would take up less space. Instead we've had these absurdly large cases for years. And then, back when DVDs were new and more expensive on average, and they had to make the packaging seem more "premium" for pricey TV season sets, you had things like digi-packs for sets of 4 or 6 discs that are ridiculously wide (by contrast in years since there have been DVD cases that hold 6 discs that are the exact same size as a standard 1 disc case).
    As just one example in my collection, I have all of the seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel on DVD in their original large DVD digi-packs. They were all 6 discs sets except for Buffy Season 1 which is 3 discs. So all of Buffy is 39 discs total, and all of Angel is 30 discs total. There are some 10 disc poly cases that I've found that will take up less space. This means I could store all of Buffy in 4 of those cases (with 1 empty hub, they don't make a 9 disc version), and all of Angel in 3 of them. And if I start doing this with a lot of my collection, especially TV shows, they will take up less space, and I can adjust shelving for the reduced height and store more.
    I do plan to go through my collection and see what I can get rid of. There have been some impulse buys over the years that I can do without.
    But also, as part of this, while I may get rid of some redundant titles (having the same movie in multiple releases/formats), if there are things like bonus features that didn't carry over, I may hang onto different versions, but put them all in one case together. I've found rather inexpensive CD poly case options for 1, 2, 4, 8, and 10 disc cases when bought in bulk (6 discs seems more elusive... I've seen some on ebay, but they are pricier and don't have an outer sleeve to put art work in.... which sucks because I do have some scenarios where that would be a more happy medium for my needs). And for some movie series, I will likely try to put all of those movies in a single case or as few of cases as possible.
    There will definitely be some tiles that I keep in their original packaging either because I really like that original packaging, or if it is a more rare, out of print title, even if it's something I want to keep and don't plan to sell, I'll probably still keep the original case. I may even look into these sleeves in your video for keeping some of the original artwork stored away, but I wouldn't use that for the discs, themselves. I'll also hang onto some Steelbook and slipcovers.
    Basically once this is done, for the most part, there would be no more separating my DVDs and Blu-Rays (4Ks are already mixed in with Blu-Rays since the cases are the same size and they usually include a Blu-Ray disc anyway). It would just be most of my collection in these cases taking up as little space as possible. But I really want to get to the point of curating my collection, getting rid of I what I don't really need, and getting what I am keeping to a point of taking up as little of space as possible.
    But I do also want to be careful about what I get rid of. Some movies aren't available on streaming, and some that are now may be removed later if there is ever any complication with the rights to the movie in the future. If it is something I may want to revisit, I will hang onto it.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      I’m working through trying to curate the collection. The sleeves and folders are helping for some of the titles I’m on the fence about. Many of those titles just aren’t really worth anything to anyone else so I just think that I might as well keep them rather than trying to sell for pennies.
      Of course we all also have that bunch of titles that we just don’t really want or want to keep which somehow got kept in the collection (because we’re collectors), I’m at the point now that I’m ready to see the back of this sort of collecting and have the more curated collection that fits my own tastes.
      Those tv show box sets though, youre right. Many are so oversized. And also frustrating when they change the styles over the seasons too.

      Since doing these videos on RUclips it’s pushed me to take a good look at my collection and make changes that I’m not sure I would have if I hadn’t started thinking about the various aspects of collecting.
      Got a good load that’ll be shipped out soon I think. Especially after doing a count up for what I actually own a couple of videos ago. Bet I found over 100 more in the attic run for this video. It’s crazy.

I would only be able to do this with titles I didn’t care about - you’d find a lot of “40 year old virgin” and “Wedding Crashers” in my sleeves. I think when collecting movies a lot of people fall into the trap of "Ohh look its 3x DVD's for £5" and buy a tonne of shovelware films that they wouldnt normally care about. My advice would be to sell off films that you would rate as below 6/10 and keep / buy only your most favorite films to avoid clutter. Also i personally would not go with sleeves, they may save on space but it removes any value the media may have in the future, buyers will want the cases, selling discs on their own defeats why people collect physical media (For the artwork, disc manual and physical object).

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      I won’t be going with sleeves for the whole collection. Most of what Ive sleeved are movies that I’m on the fence about and don’t currently hold any real value. Trade in or trying to sell would end up as pennies and not worth the hassle… unless I’m donating.
      Feel like I’m going through a bit of a phase with my collection and wanting the space over a huge collection or the stress in finding space and time for a large collection.

  • @neillumbard7419
    @neillumbard7419 6 месяцев назад +1

    Fair questions. I've wondered the same thing myself.
    Sleeving movies is a good idea to save space on titles that you might not necessarily need to display on your shelves (if you have limited shelf space) and still want to keep titles. It's a great "storage hack" (I prefer them in cases but find the sleeves a good option with storage considerations). I tend to get rid of plenty of releases over time. I keep a ton, too.
    If you enjoyed a movie but don't have the room to display them all and/or haven't seen it yet, sleeving is an OK option, IMO.
    Yeah, it's a "fine line" from hoarding - however, the movies have actual value (better PQ/better AQ from streaming) and if you ever felt like watching or re-watching one, it's there to access it. If it's one you didn't enjoy/know with certainty you would never rewatch or consider worth keeping, then it's basically hoarding stuff that should be given to goodwill or sold on eBay, etc.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      It’s the ‘what if’ that pushes me to try and keep some titles. What if I ever wanted to watch again. The likelihood is the ones that I’m putting into sleeves may never actually get watched again. But, they are movies I enjoyed to some extent. Of course, in my collection there are a number of movies that realistically I’m not going to sit and rewatch.
      The movies I do care about that I know I’ll appreciate again. They’ll stay on the shelves in their original packaging for sure.
      In terms of streaming. I find it an acceptable option for those lower grade titles I’m just not as bothered about. I honestly don’t see that much of a difference with my set up to worry myself if it’s digital or streaming. I’m sure with bigger better set ups you can see a difference but with mine, I haven’t get the eye to notice much at all.

      @@PhillwithadoubleL yeah, it is a ton of movies. I have always been more of a function over display guy with movies. I buy them to actually use them, so very few are displayed. If I had a bigger house, I would build an entire room with built in shelves floor to ceiling. To display and host them all. But I unfortunately don’t have that kind of space. So I just keep them in the 540 disc cases like I mentioned. So I can easily watch them. Even then it is still sort of a pain. I would prefer the floor to ceiling shelves with cases. I do have a dedicated theater with 4K projection. And 7.2.2 surround. And Dolby Vision and HDR capable. But I don’t want my theatre cluttered up with movies. I have slowly been building my digital library too. Up to almost 1K digital titles. Much more convenient for everyday watching in most rooms. I know I have way too many movies. But that is for two reasons. First, I plan to donate my collection when I pass away. It is a great collection for historian purposes. As I have a good bit of rare and out of print titles. And small run titles. So that is more the reason I have so many today.
      Also, I was in a severe work accident some years ago. That I almost ☠️’d in. As a result, I have a lot of permanent injuries. So I now work from home. And I also don’t go out much anymore. Due to mobility issues. And so I have become a true film buff over the years since my accident. That for me is my entertainment now. Along with making music. As I can no longer play sports or work out. Or hike or any of the things normal people can do. So having a massive collection, I can say, over the years, I have honestly seen well over 10-12K of those films.
      Not ultimately what I would want if things were different. But I struggle at times to be able to walk or use my hands, due to the spinal cord damage and neck injuries from my accident. So movies give me something to do. Especially when I am in severe pain. 🤷‍♂️

      Thought I’d keep myself on track with learning by creating as I’m learning to do things. Thing is, I’ve been rather enjoying creating these videos around collecting and things so will probably continue to do this along with what I want for my voice work… I may end up with a 2nd channel eventually. Undecided whether I can mix some of my acting things within this channel.

    Every non-Blu-ray disc and case I have eventually ends up in the attic because every movie I have I transfer digitally to my Plex server. I display the Blu-rays and certain select DVD collections (like my season 1-15 of Supernatural, seasons 1-10 of Stargate etc) on my living room shelves. Everything else goes to the loft because if I want to watch it I just fire up Plex and hit play. (I do have a bunch of "dupes" things I had on DVD that have been superseded by Blu-ray. I should get rid of them.) of the title. $1.25 per case is much cheaper than you'll pay buying them alone, especially factoring in shipping. Plus, you could always sell the discs online. There are plenty of people who just want the physical movie & don't care about anything else. Unfortunately, the dollar trees near me rarely carry blu-rays, never 4Ks. My wife and I just built a shelving unit on one wall of our "tv room" . We probably have close to 1K combination of blurays and dvds. Most newer movies we buy (or rent) on streaming unless it's something we really like (Oppenhiemer, Barbie, ect.) we purchase physical media. Yes, been "double dipped" more than once! lol! Our fear is that most of the movies we own on physical media won't be (or aren't) available on any streaming platform. Hang on to it any way you can brother!

      I have that fear for some titles too but… I increasingly use steaming service now. Either to rent or buy. The movies I love I’ll still buy physical but trying to move back to renting first through the digital platforms. I spent years being burned buying films I hadn’t seen which turned out to be not great… and many I still filed on my shelves.
      Double dipping and constant upgrades are things in guilty of for some movies.
      Storage… it’s a constant battle.

      Ya, My biggest problem with streaming is tv shows disappearing. I learned my lesson after selling my dvd collection of a sci-fi tv show called Continuum... it's out of print and isn't available on streaming anywhere that I can find. I try to focus on more niche titles these days when collecting.

      I still realise i have a problem with having far too many titles. The stuff that I won’t watch again. They’re making their way out soon. But it feels good to have a proper home for some of the other titles. I may not watch them all again but at least for some I still have that option.

      I was actually talking to another friend who I worked with in Blockbusters. Trying to remember how many movies they had in the small store where we worked after I did another video about the numbers in my collection. We think I have more titles than that had in that Blockbuster store. 😂
      Blockbuster had double the amount of cases too. The empty rental case for the store and the ‘dot boxes’ behind the counter.

    I am against these because the movie is either worthy enough to have a tiny sliver of its own real estate on a shelf, or it doesnt. Improving your shelving is the answer, not getting rid of cases imo.

      My issue is… I just don’t want more shelving. I want the living spaces to be pretty clear from my addiction.
      I was against these for a long time but I just didn’t / don’t want to let go of some of my collection. Maybe I will over time but at the moment, this has provided a slight solution to the space and chaos of the collection

      I’ve not decided what’s happening with them yet. I think they’ll mostly be donated to someone who needs empty cases. But if they are heading to the bin then they will certainly go to the recycle bin. Preference is for someone who needs or wants them when I’ve finished organising the ones that are going in the folders.
