I collect Blu-ray mainly now, but i did have a few hundred DVDs and I've done exactly this with them. It's just like you said, when you have limited space but want to keep the movies, something had to be done. I know some will say this will scratch them, so a good way to avoid that is to also purchase the white paper disc envelopes. You can put the DVD itself into the envelope, and then inside the plastic sleeve. Either way, it's a better choice than the binder in my opinion :)
I used the file dvd system with the folders in the end. I went from taking up an entire corner of my living room to a small shelf in my spare bedroom. Much better
Started doing this yesterday. It works for me. Yes it does look they they're pirated 😂. I didn't mind throwing the cases away. After a few years of not using physical it was fine, plus recycling is a good thing . I totally get that people don't like this idea 😂
I'll definitely keep this in mind. I have tons of them. I'm a big fan of 20th century cinema. But for the past few years my kids are also getting heavily into them. And already I have a lot of trouble of explaining to them that they have to put them back into the case. If I go for this solution then I already know that there are going to be even more loose discs all over the place.
This is something I would never personally do but I think the result is great for saving space😉. You could even use a file cabinet style storage device and really separate your collection alphabetically with tabs just like filing documents🤩. I learned the hard way too about the DVD books. Darn hindsight lol🤣 I've thought of downsizing using slim cases before but again I didn't like the idea of trimming or folding the cover art so I opted against that. Main thing is you found a really economic and effective way of downsizing and organizing so you can upsize your collection!😁 My current collection is 1475 DVD's and Blu-rays mostly in original covers with almost 500 in DVD books and 164 VHS tapes. One day I may need to downsize my collection too. Thankfully, today isn't that day lol🤣
@@popculturepedestal Duplicates are good for certain movies I know I'll eventually wear out. I've found a far easier way. I am ripping all my DVDs as MKVs and selling them on Vinted. I have a couple of thousand DVDs done so far on two hard drives I collected for nearly twenty five years but stopped collecting last year. I got to the point where I was spending money that I could afford to spend but would rather use the cash for other things and spending £25 or more on a collector's edition of a film I already own or would only watch once seemed pointless. I also had to have multiple bookcases and then trying to organise them so I could find them and also catalogue them took time I can easily watch something now. I still have a lot to do and now I have an external Blu-ray drive, I can rip some of the Blu-rays as well. I'm not losing any quality on the rips and I can run them through my mini PC connected to my receiver to get the surround audio I got to the point where I was spending money that I could afford to spend but would rather use the cash for other things and spending £25 or more on a collector's edition of a film I already own or would only watch once seemed pointless It does take time to copy the discs, and I do have to store them while I wait for them to sell, but the inconvenience is worth it
Firstly, eww. With that out of the way, 400+ is a lot of movies! I'm at probably around 80-100 but now have a 1-in-1-out policy. I have to ask myself if I'm ever really gonna watch that amount of content and do I need to be the custodian of it on that level? (no, not really) Once I got past a certain point I realized in many cases I'm buying them for the sake of it/out of habit and am now trying to whittle the collection down to the classic, essential and rewatchable, which I balance with a sort of "Now showing" section of 2-3 temporary items I'll re-donate once I've watched them.

I feel u there , my kids leave everything lying around , not just DVDs lol
I live in a small flat. I've done all my DVD's, cd's and some PC games 👍
Do u regret ?
@popculturepedestal not at all. Most of them fit in a small bookcase and a hi-fi cabinet.
Cool

@@popculturepedestal You're welcome! Do you use any software like Filmotech to catalog your collection?
@SheenaAaron-fo9bs I don't , this is why I duplicate quite a lot ha ha

Can alway put them into binders as well
I put these I. Shoe box like boxes so you can flip through like lps at store
I like that
@ Amazon sells 6 pack of black boxes for 26 bucks on quarterly sale. They store about 200 a box. I sort alphabetical then by genere
Good video and great effort, but I always felt like keeping them in the original cases.

I like the idea , but I'd be worried about my hard drives breaking
That's how they store bootleg dvds in Asia.
This actually crossed my mind
I keep a lot of my DVDs, CDs , Blu rays,4k in binder, some of them including box set, on self. Some cases I have thrown away away.
Surely a way to scratch discs? I have DVD's in a wallet and there is a risk of scratches getting them in and out.
I don't see how , when the disks are in-between pieces of glossy paper , in the factory they live on a spindle on top of other disks
@@popculturepedestal very easily done you remember the original buffy and angel dvd sets that was in books getting the dvds in and out was a pain
interesting... but what is a DVD?
It's one of those fandangle movie thingies
i use a DJs numbered cd flight case and a spreadsheet
Seems like a great idea, would it be safe for the disks though?
