Update: Tarifold, the company who makes the sleeves I use exclusively, is offering Cereal At Midnight friends and family 15% off their order at T3LShop.com by using code CAM15 at checkout. Very cool!
Came back to this video to see if you had one😂👍
Yes actually movies used to come in such sleeves here and the shop keepers used to put them in plastic boxes , also such sleeves were used to cover plastic boxes to prevent them from getting dirty or scratched . There were three sizes 5 , 9 and 12 mm or sleeves for DVDs
I hated this idea when you 1st suggested it but now that I’m out of space and getting heat from the significant other, it’s the greatest idea ever 😂
But Heath, what will I do with my VHS tapes? 😂
Right? I got rid of most of mine about a year ago and I haven't missed them. I need to figure out what to do with the rest of them now.

@CerealAtMidnight introducing Loose Tape in a Bag! A revolutionary new storage system for your VHS movies! From HeathCo!
Use the disc sleeves. Just squeeze’em in!
Put cut VHS boxes in clamshells, that way they'll be damaged and take up more space!
I did this exact thing back in 2010 when I was moving back to the US from abroad... I eventually went back to the cases for a couple of important reasons... I couldn't find specific movies very quickly. Also, resale is almost impossible when you do this. So don't do it unless you don't care about the resale value of your collection. I did start cutting a few of the snapper cases, but it got messy ugly. So, I ended up not doing the rest.
I hold on to the cases in storage.
Yeah this is reminding me of the mid 2000s when we all held our CDs and DVDs in those zip up binders, but around 2014 I found it was easier and better to just transfer all my discs back into their original hard cases for storage, packing, resale, and nostalgia. I understand the storage space dilemma, but I don’t want to go through the inevitable “ah I just want to put these all back in the original cases” in a few years again.
I find the best solution is more square footage, buy a mansion and problem solved.
This is funny - in seriousness, though, these sleeves are excellent.
Back in my DJ days in the early 2000s, many of us in that business put all of our CDs into those slim sleeves allowing us to carry around so much more music. I still had the insert and back art so I always knew the contents. I haven’t really considered doing this for my movies but as space starts to shrink, and it’s shrinking, this is a terrific idea. So consider me trigger free from this video 😂
I'd like to see a hard slim case that holds the art like those sleeves with a spindle. Essentially like CD singles cases so it's rigid, & doesn't scratch the disc like the plastic & paper sleeves do. Yeah I want deep jewel cases, but that suits me & my scratch paranoia more.
This solution to space limitation issues isn’t for me, but for people who don’t mind it, I’m happy for you. I’m too much of a sucker for keeping things in their original form as they were when brand new. I’m probably OCD in that regard. I’d also fear discs getting cracked or scratched (yeah, I know-care goes a long way, but you don’t know my luck with this kind of thing). I also wonder if ringwear could eventually become an issue. I don’t mind curating my collection, getting rid of/selling duplicates on lesser formats, if need be. And even becoming more selective, only buying what I know I will watch is something I’ve been more conscientious of lately in order to keep my collection from growing too crazily.
I can see a limited use for the sleeves, if you need to store the cases/packaging in a separate space and keep the actual discs somewhere else for easy access (where you presumably have limited space). But for me, yeah, there's no way I'd be throwing anything away - there goes much of the value if you ever need or want to sell some of them - so for me this would just be having to find extra space somewhere else, which would also preferably be somewhere not subject to temperature extremes, especially here in a humid climate.
I converted about 700 of my CDs to sleeves in 2008. I am just about finished putting them back into jewel cases. I was noticing ring impressions on some of my tray cards and booklets. I was also doing my DVD/Blurays but my wife was complaining that it is not easy to browse movies this way. So back into case they went too. We just moved into a larger house a couple of months ago so this helps for space.
If you are keeping all the cases and storing them like in a garage or something, then maybe print the covers for the snapper cases to put in the sleeves, and box up the actual cases
I'm also buying those sleeves from Denmark. They really are great! I don't have a lot of space to begin with, and I'm also collecting video games. So I'm displaying the games and putting my movies and music into sleeves. It's a never ending project as I'm also upgrading DVD's to BR/4K when possible. But I'm sure when it's all done, it's gonna be awesome! I've also begun thinking about putting games in sleeves, just because I've been feeling that I don't want any bookcases anymore. But we'll see.
The cases of music CD's I have just throwed away, and some I gave away. But movie cases I'm keeping. Just putting them into boxes and storing down in the basement's storeroom.
Its not for me, but I do think alot of people could benefit from these sleeves. Basically, I got rid of most of my DVDs by buying expanded Blu-Ray/4K cases so I could fit the DVD disc in with the Blu-ray/4K discs. As to the DVD Cover/Insert/slip?? I kept them of course. Gallon bags from Wal-Mart work well. Just stuck them in drawers after bagging them. Not sure I really need to keep the DVD art, but for now I will.
If anyone needs a new home for their discarded cases, hit me up 😄
I think part of the fun is seeing your collection on the wall. I’m quickly running out of space though so I’m definitely keeping this in mind for the future.
Imagine all the room you would have to enjoy your collection in a bigger place to live if you didn't spend thousands of dollars on amassing it.
That's why I don't make a big deal about Arrow Video or Criterion. Buy all my stuff at DVD exchange stores.
It is an interesting system, but it's not for me. I prefer looking at the rows of movies I have collected over the years. Now, I know everyone collects in different ways and that is good. There is no right or wrong way to do this. But you talking about the one thing dealing with cutting the snapper cases did make me cringe a bit. But, hey it's yours to do with as you want. All the best. ~Ron
Ron, I used to feel the same way about browsing my shelves. My collection had overgrown my storage capacity and I had hundreds (maybe thousands) of discs stacked on the floor. We're all headed to some limit with our collection and this is one way to keep it all. As you can see, I still have thousands of movies displayed on my shelves. Curating what deserves to be displayed is part of the fun!
And I haven't cut anything...yet.

This seems tedious and unnecessary.
Clearly the answer is to build more rooms onto your house for more space.
IMO, if the DVD has 3 or more discs just keep them in the case. Definitely for 4.
I see no other alternative to what you are doing here -- if one is going to have a substantial collection and maintain living quarters as actual living quarters instead of as a tacky hoarder warehouse. For one thing, nobody is going to be impressed with someone's collection to the point that it all needs to be out on display like some museum. They're more likely to think you're a psycho. I have a modified version of this where the discs are in thin paper sleeves alphabetized inside uniform stackable boxes with the art inside binder sheets that can be flipped through like some video stores used to do back in the day, especially in the porno backroom. Don't pretend you guys don't know what I'm talking about.
You can buy sleeves for dvds with their cases that are a little wider that the snappers can fit into without cutting the covers. They are not as good quality but at least you wont be cutting covers
How well do they hold up and over time?! I have plastic sleeve for c.d. cases that just come apart.
It’s a smart space solution for sure. Thanks for the update! The only thing I can’t do is cut my WB snappers 😂
Same, I have about 600 of them and they get their own shelf!
I just left the snapper cases alone
Been doing this now after getting stressed with my collection and all the movies piling up. I have a smaller curated shelf of movies I actually really like and then these sleeves in the tarifold box underneath for anything else. The box is a bit pricey for what it is, but seems to hold up really well and looks great and fits these exactly. Have 2 boxes now. Also was able to swap out cheap blue cases for the nicer clear ones on my shelf for any boutique release that got sleeved. Slip cases/rigid boxes are in storage if they came with the release so not losing out. Flipping through the box feels just like flipping through records in a crate. Also made custom sleeve inserts for the Bond collection as the cases that came in broke easily and barely held the discs in place and provided no info on the movies.
I definitely see the attraction in terms of saving space, but I feel like this wouldn't be a great option for limited editions and releases with nice slipcovers, etc. Also, if you ever want to sell any of these titles off later it might be difficult. I would also like to be able to see the spines easier. Unless you alphabetize everything very strictly, you may lose what you're looking for and have to take a while looking through everything.
Those are both valid points: this is not ideal for collectible packaging or for reselling.
@@CerealAtMidnight Which is why, someone could always sleeve standard editions and not sleeve collectors/limited editions. That's what I plan on doing.
That's pretty much what I'm doing too. 90% of my collection doesn't need to be displayed and is nothing special in terms of collectibility or value. The real value is the disc itself. Now I'll have more room to store my box sets, Imprint releases, etc.
Reselling is not a problem. Just put them back in the case if you want to sell them. Cases cost pennies.
This is exactly what I have been looking for. I just need to find a binder that isn't so expensive.
I don’t like this solution. I recently saw a lot of 24+ desirable movies sell for only $6 on eBay because nobody bid on movies pictured in sleeves. The artwork will probably be damaged somewhat from putting it in there and handling it over time and the discs could get cracked easier.
A possible cracked disc is a good point. The best movie cases protect best with good hubs.
Thanks heath you just saved me in my apt from being closed in on my collection this idea saved me a tons of space an now I can grow my collection even more great job man ❤
But what about the empty cases? general recycling facility's/curbside won't take type 6 plastic, so unless you can find a specialized company that takes then what are you doing? just wondering
I used to work in Blockbuster years ago and due to some new hair-brained company rule, we had to ditch hundreds (if not thousands) of the black DVD cases!
The manager was all for ditching them with the normal rubbish collection but I suggested that we donate them to the many Charity Shops in the town to avoid sending them all to landfill.
I took hundreds of them round to the all the Charity Shops and most were happy to receive them saying that they would bundle them up in tens and sell them for a quid or something. They thought they'd be ideal for people with broken cases and the like, so it was a win/win situation - the best of all situations, I think you'll agree!
Ah, the happy memories of 'Blockbuster Days' come flooding back...
Heath, I think you should do a Cereal At Midnight video called Serial Cutter At Midnight. Take out some large, sharp scissors and cut all those snapper cases up. This would be funny to torture those fans who frown on this idea, haha.
That would definitely cause an outrage!
Fascinating. Sigh. I just don't know what to do or think.
Could you do a video tutorial on sleeving the Warner Bros. DVD cardboard packaging, I have a copy of Pleasantville I got from Goodwill Bins I'd like to sleeve.
They don't fit in sleeves unless you cut the cardboard, which is what I do.
One question. What do you do with old plastic boxes? Do you keep them or toss them?
Its a very good idea .I grade my movies. If their grade A or B movies like Star Wars, Jaws etc etc they stay in original packing.Anything i grade C to D like Resident Evil or The Core i put in sleeves like you have.
I love you my friend but I could never lol.
I cut my Warner as well. Eeek. lol
UGH. I'm probably going to do this at some point.
keep your DVD/CD is the jewel cases people this is such a silly idea.
I’ve been using sleeves, first on CDs, since the late 90’s. There’s no other way.
I do like this option but standard DVD covers have been bad for so many years now I no longer feel a need to keep the artwork. If there's a notable amount of special features printed on the back I'll cut that out and put it in with the disc.
The sleeves help with storage but I'd be afraid of scratched discs. I prefer to keep the cases. 🤷
I'm on the same boat, need to make sacrifices to preserve physical media and this storage solution to save space is a good choice. Thumbs up!
Hey Man. Thanks. I just ordered a few things. I got DVDs 📀 that are take space. Can’t wait to organise my shelf.
Just have to say been following you for about a month. And we live in small home. And wanted to keep collecting but pretty much max out.
Then saw this video what a game changer
Thanks
I'm so glad that I could help!
I just love keeping dvds in their original cases, looks much better especially when you have different coloured dvd cases for certain movies.
I've been doing this for a few years now, it was either reduce the size by removing the cases or getting rid off a lot of my collection. Once I have them in the plastic sleeves I then put them in large plastic storage containers which lock shut and I put a few silica gel packets in the large boxes for a little extra protection. In the large plastic containers I can flick through the movies and pick something out to watch
Savage... just.... just savage...
Great video, you've gave me ideas for storing my more than 2700 DVDs, blu-rays and 4K! But i don't want to fold covers so the multiple DVD one's seems good to me! I hope they can make these for blu-rays too. And yes a way to close the pouch would be good on these too.
Thank you for this, Heath. I'm nearly in the same boat in terms of my collection overtaking my entire home. I missed the first 'Storage Hack' video so I am so glad you did an update. I know what my next purchase is gonna be. Even if I just use the Terafold for my DVDs, that'll save me a lot of space! Thanks again for this!
No media in the bathroom?!? Noob. 😂
I have to wonder - and if Tarifold is reading these comments it would be nice to hear from them - why does a blu-ray sleeve cost more than a DVD sleeve? It is the same material, presumably, and blu-ray cases are actually smaller so they should be cheaper to produce. I won't hold my breath on an answer, especially seeing how they can't keep them in stock apparently. But I would be curious to hear how they justify that price difference.
I've wondered the same thing. I figure it's because Blu-ray is more niche and they probably sell less of them. Maybe we can get an answer, though to your point, that's not something I expect them to address.
No offence to them I sure they have cost they have to deal with but £25 is way to much for literally plastic like for 50 blu rays it come to 50p per peace of plastic which ideally used be 10-20 p each.
Such a great space saving idea!!!
It's funny, I'm not a stickler about a lot of things most collectors are sticklers about...but I just can't behind doing this with my collection. I won't knock it. It's a logical solution to space saving, but for me if my stuff in just slipped into a sheet of plastic and stored in a box, what's the point? While the most important part of collecting physical media is the, duh, media itself. For me a big part of it is the display of said media. When a portion of it is stuffed into a box, that defeats the point. By that point I may need to consider getting rid of some of my collection.
I think this a genuinely good idea for people who don't want to part with some of their collection but need to clear up some space, but for me it ain't it, lol.
When CD/DVD/Blu-rays/4k Discs are purchased they are housed in a protective environment (Cases) for a reason: when seated in the center hub proper, the bottom of the disc is touching nothing - there is 1/16" or less of space between the disc bottom and the case for absolute no touching on anything, the top too, for those older 2-sided DVD discs. Slim/Ultra-Slim DVD cases or CD cases also offer the same protection, while saving more horizontal space. It will work! It will work!
You probably also know that discs are stacked one on top of the other, dozens tall, when they're manufactured. The idea that nothing touches the playing surface isn't real. They're touched the moment they're made, and then frequently touched during packaging as well. This method is safe and saves more space than slim cases while also preserving the artwork, for those that care about such things.
@@CerealAtMidnight Good point. However when we receive the discs, they are smudge, finger-print, and scratch free in their safe and secure cases, artwork with side sleeve or booklet. Your viewers may prefer the alternate choice of 5mm wide ultra-slim cases which fit all discs. (Advertised as 4mm, but closer to 5mm). That's about 3 cases to 1, standard is 14mm wide. They also have literature clips on left panel to hold inserts. Purchased from LDBMart on Ebay. For the snapper Warner Brothers cases, I keep them as is because I like them, easier to open.
I'm really NOT a fan of putting in sleeves but preserving the covers like this is so much better than everything else I've seen... going to give it a try for my DVDs. It seems T3L won't export to the UK which is annoying but at least (after some problems) I've found them on AmazonUK
The best ones are the double disc versions from T3L. Its the same as the quadruple one you show but has only two pockets so it works for storing single disc or double disc, and you get more in a pack It does save a hell of a lot of room and you don't need to fold the covers over. Even if you do, they don't get that hard crease that you're giving them for the single disc sleeves. Having said that, I do mostly use them for regular standard blurays or DVDs to make room for all the collector's editions I now get.
No way in heck would I trash my collection like that.
I've started sleeving as well and my guy you are missing out. So much space can be gained. I've been sleeving my box sets and steel books. Throwing those away. It's been a game changer
@@Tyler7P7 Hey, you do you. I take better care of my things than that. I'm not creasing all my artworks. And I don't want a box of sleeves, I want a collection on my shelves. He's only peddling this junk cause they're giving him free product.
I wonder if the disc might cause ringwear on the paper sleeve over time.
I had my disc in disc binders and the discs were not in good shape after years they had ware that doesn't happen with regular cases
I don't want to hear any more crap about "Oh, I can't buy physical media - it just takes too much space ..."; one more excuse out the door... :D
Man this looks like a good solution for me. Most casts I am ok with getting rid of and slimming down the tower to make space for more media!
I live in a studio so I've very limited space. My VHS collection is in the closet but my discs are outside. I use those 336 discs carrying cases for most of my collection especially DVDs. Most of the boxed sets get to stay intact. I give away the cases, put the sleeves apart in a box and the discs in the carrying cases. This has freed up a lot of space. Your method looks great too and you keep the sleeves out to see. Good project and cool video Heath!👉😃👈
Hell no. Get a bigger house.
I’ve been putting my movies in sleeves for years now using the T3L sleeves. I was gonna do a video on it but you beat me to it! Damn you!
I’ll still have to do one and show how I store the sleeves.
I already did this with all of my CDs and DVDs (except the bigger box-sets and WB snapper cases). I don't think I'll open up/fold the snapper cases, it's just too bulky as it is and won't work well in the sleeves IMO. You don't really save any extra space with the bulky box-sets (or much at all) so I won't do that for bigger box sets.
I'm doing it with Blu-ray releases now and plan to order a lot more of the sleeves. I'm out of space, too. I'd rather have my limited editions/collectors editions on display and just sleeve the standard editions like this because of how much storage space I have. These really are a great solution, I find myself now flipping through them like the sleeves are records - using the bins designed for these.
What are these Warner cases you are talking about?
It's those cars that only have plastic at the back and snap closed along the side overlapping the front, which is cover art cardboard. Hope that makes sense.
Thnx for the video! I’ll be doing this with my Blu’s& 4k that have no slipcovers. This is a great alternative
I've used these sleeves on a few hundred of my DVDs so far, and they work great! For now I'm keeping them in a banker's box, which I've used as storage for a while, but I'm open to other/better options.
I'm not sure I'm to the point of using them on any Blu-rays or 4Ks though. I definitely wouldn't damage the artwork/special packaging on anything. I'd just compromise, and keep the space on my shelves for those.
While it's gonna trigger some - unless you are blessed with free space in your home (that your SO is willing to give up) - sleeves are my go to option. Nowadays if I find a blu ray release that isn't special, I just sleeve 'em. Currently have at least 50% of my blu rays in sleeves (collection over 2,000 at this point), to the point where I feel I have control over my collection now.
These are cool, glad i have enough room for my four binders, because i don't want to buy from Amazon. If i get enough blu rays i might check the company's website again.
Thank you, Heath for all the help. Especially for those of us new to the collecting market. Great X-Men t-shirt. Being that you are a Jim Steranko fan in case you don't know he created that classic font that has graced the comic since he drew a couple of issues way back in 1966.
I know I'm late to the party and you have had a good experience with tarifold, but for those cardboard snap cases, DiscSox sleeves hold them perfectly.
I jumped in on this after your first video and it has been great, I use it for Blu Rays and DVD's that do not have slip covers, making my collection on shelves look better and not to mention it freed up so much space. I can now credit Heath for how I store my complete collection, from the shelves to these sleeves and storage bags. Thank you!!! 👍👍😁😁👍👍
This hack has been a lifesaver for sure. I started with CDs and DVDs (and the kids' Blu-rays), and I'm definitely going to start on my Blu-rays as soon as the sleeves are back in stock. It helps that the majority of my Blu-rays don't have slipcovers, whereas my UHD collection generally does.
I use this method as well. In my point of view, the main problem of this method of plastic case is the possibility of mold, because is so tight and with no air flow.
Great update, & great partnership! A smart company taking advantage of the relationship in a positive way, & we all benefit.
I got rid of all my cases four years ago and when I moved house. Never looked back.
Love these sleeves. I immediately ordered some after your 1st video. And spread the word to other collectors who also ordered some. I found a little basket that fit 2 rows of sleeves, so that worked out. I'm sure people could find something at Dollar stores, yard sales or whatever
I dove into Tarifolds (DVDs and Blus) over the summer, along with some internal protective sleeves. I've really loved this for sleeving up my "burner" discs - anything that's got two or fewer discs, is not on something that looks like a boutique. So, anything from Criterion to Kino to Warner Archive still stays in the boxes for now. Same with all the 4Ks for now, even the bland, empty boxes. I also don't de-sleeve Warner snapper cases - and oddly enough, that makes these things (always the bane of my storage, going back twenty years) kind of a fetishized, collectible thing? I never thought I'd look at my Big Red One or Night Shift DVDs with the same eye I give to, like, Vinegar Syndrome or Impact. All of this might change in the future, of course, but for now it's helped me declutter about 1200 discs into cases.
I have a Container Store near me and over the summer I picked up about five of these "media boxes" -- I like them fine, though the lids don't fit all that great. What's great is that they are rigid, stackable, and store about 300 or so (Tarifolded) discs per box. As I'm very much out of room, the stackability is preferred over the flexible/fabric and plastic crates for me. Here's a link:
www.containerstore.com/s/office/craft-hobby/iris-media-storage-box/12d?productId=10009241
I have almost 600 snapcase DVDs, I love collecting them!
Do you think the DVD sleeves would work for Blu-Ray? I just think it would be better financially to buy the DVD sleeves since they come with 100.
The solution for Warner DVD snapper cases is to pray that they all get upgraded to blu-ray!
Do you know what type of plastic the sleeve is made from? As an LP collector I know some plastics can off gas and damage discs over time. I assume it may be the same with DVDs & blu-rays.
I don't, but it's worth pointing out that off-gassing with DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K cases is already a huge problem. A lot of these movies are shipping straight from the distributor with greasy discs.
They're listed as polypropylene. So, the same thing blu-ray cases and comic magazine bags are made out of. It should be archival-safe and acid-free.
@@CerealAtMidnight I'm kind of horrified you just moved a large portion of your collection into these *without* knowing... 😄
I like this idea. I am a former TCG (magic, yugioh) player. So I appreciate sleeves like these for my collection
As long as you never sell those I'm fine with it.
Nothing worse than getting a generic case.
Color scan (and save/back-up) any that you feel like cutting. Color reprint/copy and cut the reprint. Store the original in safe area.
It’s not a horrible idea but yeah, I’d still have to keep all the bulky plastic. So that would still be in storage (basement or attic) but the in house look would be cleaner for sure.
You just need more shelves and storage space. Stop wasting space on luxuries like furniture. 🤪
"The things you own end up owning you".
-Tyler Durden (Fight Club, 1999)
A quote I believe with all my heart, which is why I choose to actively take control over my possessions and don't give them authority.
Although, to play devil's advocate: Tyler Durden doesn't exist, either in Fight Club or reality, and was the result of a schizophrenic break with reality. Tyler Durden as a character is the manifestation of Chuck Palahniuk's emerging homosexuality.
Don't let the things you own become a Tyler Burden
You sold me thanks for the info Heath.
Totally unrelated to the topic of your video but where did you get that awesome hat ?
Interesting concept , but not for me. I keep my collection around 1000 movies at all times , this gives me enough space to manage the collection and keep them in their existing cases. Part of the love of movie collecting for me is being able to physically see them on a daily basis. I don't impulse buy or feel the need to collect every movie that comes out for a specific company or movie line.
I like the idea. Need to think about it more at least for the movies. I think the cd sleeves would be better in my eyes if you did not have to flip down the back tray sides. Maybe they will make them a tad wider to make the back paper lay flat instead of folding the sides down.
Remind me, what do you do with all your various empty cases? Or you probably don’t get rid of much but down the road if you don’t have the case, will anyone want it in that condition? Will those sleeves also hold the slip covers? How expensive is the postage from that company?
Thanks I jumped on these currently I have movies that don't fit on my shelves they are in boxes, now I have a way to store them and access them easily.
I have the same problem but the solution I took for the past 15-20 years was to store my media in 7mm blu ray and dvd cases as opposed to the normal 14mm so I get 2-for-1 space wise. I shun the hi-swag collectibles and try to keep my collection content as disc-based as possible. I tried sleeves but the thing I didn't like about sleeves was that they're not readable from the spine. Just like you I don't have a solution for snapper-cases yet so I just leave them be for now.
I want to get x2 double dvd sleeves with protective felt and a storage box, but I can't justify paying $112 Canadian. Ouch.
IT's SO much cheaper to order directly. I don't know why the prices in Canada are about 3x higher than everywhere else.
@@CerealAtMidnightno one cares man
The hack that i use that has been helpful has been double or triple blu-ray cases. If you have 2 films say for example dead snow 1 and 2 you take the 2nd film and flip the artwork inside out and put it inside the case facing the opposite way from the other films artwork. So you can house 2 films in 1 bluray case.
Been considering doing this with CD jewel cases for years now
they should make a version with a printed blue or black (or even red) strip at the top so it still has that look of the bluray/4k(/hddvd) cases
if your gonna do that just put them in big cd cases - same thing. a storage unit would cost about the same
Is it absolutely essential to put those paper sleeves over the discs before you put them in?
