Definitely the best time to collect physical media. No question
Why not 5 years ago? Everything was cheaper.
The sooner, the better. As he said above, everything was so much cheaper years ago.
I went to a thrift store and bought vhs tapes for 50 cents now i have over 200 tapes and I also collect dvds cds and books
@@TheCommentNinja81because SO MANY releases have happened since then. You must not be very in the scene haha
@@fritzthecat8158 no he is right EVERYTHING was cheaper 4 or 5 years ago. new releases or not the cost of them is much more today.
I started purchasing physical media because I got tired of my streaming services 😮
4k blurays is the very best movie experience in the history of home video
Very true!
If you have the money kaleidescape is fantastic too. It’s just massively expensive.
Especially with a good projector 😊
But isn’t that like saying dvd is the best home video has ever been in 2001?
It’s just the most recent format
Is blue ray really that better
I love physical media I have been building my collection for awhile now. Plus its nostalgic and a past time.
Couldn't agree more!
Old school here I’ve always collected physical media ever since the 80’s music and movies ,I don’t and never will trust internet services because so many todays standers are effecting past and present music artists and films ,now my son doesn’t understand this no matter how I explain it to him, so my physical media collection will go some where after I’m gone. It’s a shame today’s generation see what’s around the futures corner of media control. Remember Fahrenheit 451 it was glimpses of what’s to come.
So I had a over 2,000 DvD and blue-ray collection but I just put it all on an external hard drive that now has over 5,000 movies and tv shows. I even made 2 copies incase. As along as I just keep up with the times and transfer it so much cheaper. I am not trying to be mean or anything either just saying that basically what I did was just put everything on onw DvD or whatever. it's the same logic , I have a physical copy of my collection via external hard drive , only it's 100 times cheaper and let's face it your really just buying the cheap DvD box and crap like that. Music is different and a little before my time so I cannot speak on that. Or at the very least you showed just do it anyways incase of like something crazy like a fire or something.
I remember what a friend of mine asked me when Netflix and some of these other streaming services started to come online. He was like, all of the movies you want to watch will soon be online, so you can get rid of your physical media and free up some space in your home. I was like, what happens if a movie you like gets taken down because it suddenly becomes “problematic” or they no longer want to pay royalties to keep it. No thanks, I’ll keep my 900+ movies and TV series in physical form. That way, I can watch what I want, when I want. Fast forward a few years and this actually started happening. My friend was like, I’ll bet you’re glad you kept your physical copies aren’t you. I was like, yep! 👍🏾😀
Good Job!
i miss the days when you'd buy a movie or tv series on dvd and it came with a cool box with all kinds of goodies.
At least there is still a thriving used market for physical media.
100% agree. Censorship has gotten out of control on streaming sites - owning the original releases on physical media is the ONLY option to get the fully uncut versions. Streaming services seem to be getting worse and worse. I never used to collect physical, but I now prefer having the media there at all times and it's nicer to actually own it. I'm sensing others are seeing the same and physical media sales seems to be going back up which is just crazy when you think about how it went away for a while. I COMPLETELY forgot about all the special features on these things too, it's absolutely incredible how much more content you get!
Here is my issue , I had a 2,000 + collection of DvDs and Blue-ray. Once my cousin showed me how to torrent movies and such, I went through my collection and put everything on an external hard drive and then have just gone that route and sitting on like 5k+ movies and TV. I even made 2 copies incase when got messed up. Keep in mind not a collector and such and just a buyer and watcher but it got me thinking about just selling "used" external hard drives but leave the content on them. Just not sure how legal it would be.
I made the decision last week and I've already scooped up 50 Blurays for $140! Ones that I will rewatch. Way better deal than paying almost $50 a month to not be able to find anything on Netflix or Prime!!
Exactly! Great job!
I like picking up my blu rays and dvd's at garage sales so much more cheaper than the thrift store
Nice! I have gotten some good deals at garage sales as well.
Normal people: Streaming😊
Music/Movie nerds (like me): Now is the time to BUY CDS AND DVDS!!🤓
And your not alone!
Also normal people that stream. What happened to the movie or show I wanted to watch it gone now.
Physical media collectors I want to watch this. They go over an grab it an put it in the player an watch the movie or show.
Should be the same for gaming too. Especially if you have an Xbox Series X, there are some backwards compatible games that only work with the physical disc
Jellyfin/Plex makes it so you still stream your or your friends physicals 😊
It’s because everybody starting to realize the truth that streaming services are a scam and everybody’s starting to panic not me. I’ve been collecting DVDs for over 20 years and they all still work and I never have to connect to the stupid Internet to watch my movies.
I made my spare room into a cinema 🎥🍿 room and I've been picking up loads of dvds from charity shops and that , honestly it's the best thing I've done, watching all different movies on the big screen is way better because before I spent most of my time searching through netflix, prime, Disney ect for something to watch, ended up not watching anything 😂 if you have the room, create a cinema room, you'll be glad you did , we have family movie night still, 🎉🎉
Great Idea! I would like to have a dedicated cinema room eventually too.
@@HomeVideoHangouts yeah it's definitely worth it, I'm a big star wars fan so going to watch all the movies on the big screen over the weekend since it's star wars day on the 4th 🤩🤩🍿🎥
May the 4th be with you!
I’ve been collecting physical movie since DVDs first came out and there is nothing better than just pop in a movie on when you want to watch it. I never have to worry about Netflix having the movie I wanna watch or a bill every month. Now I only buy about four or five movies a year when they come out that I like, i’ll buy the new Ghostbusters and Godzilla King Kong movie when they come to 4K blu-ray and it will be so much cheaper than buying Disney+ Netflix and HBO for the year. Streaming is a big rip off I recommend everybody by their top hundred movies physically and you’ll see how much money you save because you will not need all of those streaming services every month
Very true! The costs of streaming services can add up quickly when you have multiple.
I’ve been collecting my favorite shows and movies on DVD, Blu Ray and 4K Blu Ray for years. I recently got some working CRTs and some VCRs and I started collecting VHS tapes again. There’s a Savers five minutes away from my house. :)
Nice! I enjoy going to Savers to but unfortunately the ones near me are typically overpriced.
Buying a large lot is a great way to start a collection. It takes a lot of the flavor out of it once lots start having a bunch of duplicates, but dang those first lots are so much fun. All the better if it's a local you're buying from as shipping can be high.
I feel like the comment section of this video is such a good summary of why new collectors feel unwelcome in the community
There are so many reason collecting now is a great start, if nothing else its the fact that collecting is always fun and media preservation as well as not having to rely on streaming are probably more relevant than ever. Also, starting now is probably better than never starting lol
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the comment!
Been collecting for 30+ years. It has always been the best time to collect
I follow ur videos
You heard the man today is the right time not yesterday today
@@RETRO-RANEYS-RESTORATIONSit’s always been the right time, don’t neeed no one telling me when it is lol
Word! I’ve been collecting since 1998
Amen brother Amen
I’ve ever stopped buying physical media, mainly CDs and vinyl I’ve been collecting them for at least 40 years, I have a few hundred dvds too,,there are so many benefits..
Awesome!
Yes, but the irony is, the fewer people who buy physical media brand new at full price, the less incentive there is for stores to carry them The fewer stores there are to sell them, the less incentive there is for studios to put the effort into producing the physical media. Don't get me wrong, physical media everyday all day, but we have to know what part we are playing in the decline of physical media.
Can’t really blame people with the retail prices of new blu-ray/ DVD movies they expect us to pay
Buying physical media new or used will show demand for it. Also it will force companies to create a good product at a fair price. Wealth is never last, it simply transfers. It will go from streaming to physical. In simple terms. Lol.
I've been collecting physical media for several years now. With the bans on some really good movies, if you have the media you can watch or listen any time you want. Same with books as well.
yes a lot of the same principles apply to books as well.
I’ve always collected Physical Media. Funny you mentioned Laserdisc because I am a big collector of Laserdiscs I love watching movies on that format
Nice! I haven't actually watched a laserdisc but when I see them in stores I always appreciate their cover art. Much bigger space for art compared to a DVD or Blu-Ray.
Couldn't agree more, feels like physical media is having a bit of a revival
Yes it definitely seems like it!
Im a young guy that just recently started grabbing 4k blu rays of all my favorite movies and started finding out that not all 4ks are the best versions of my favorite movies. Not only that, but a lot of streaming services are only streaming the worser versions. T2 is a great example. Now im tracking down all these versions of physical media and am finding myself with a bit of a collection lol
Plus some platforms have started to censor and edit old 'offensive' releases
Ya that is unfortunate. Splash is one movie I have in my collection where that was the case.
@@HomeVideoHangouts what happened with "Splash"??
The streaming service version of splash cuts out some of the scenes that contain nudity.
*lets get Physical!*
LOL
I work at an auction on the weekend, we sell physical media cheap… sometimes CD’s and records go a little high but generally they are going for less and less, especially DVD’s. But we’re kind of a small town auction.
Nice!
@@HomeVideoHangouts Wish i could find 80's CD with the packaging that was so great. They were like 15-20$ in 85-86...
I’ve been collecting dvds for years. I’ve never signed up for any streaming services because at any time they can delete shows and movies
And they do... all the time.
I collect anime dvd /blu ray as some get taken off app so I can all ways be able watch it
Ive purchased all the tna impact ppvs on dvd and the entire Dragonball, dbz, gt, and dragon ball super on dvd recently over the last 6 months. Tons of stuff that isnt available on streaming. Ive been getting killer deals buying used and new. Great advice
Thank you! Thanks for sharing!
Have been keeping/collecting dvds and cds for a long time. Got into blurays for a bit, but dvds are good enough for me. Some obsure tv shows are only on dvd also. Ive been collecting those for years now. Trying to get all the old school 80s/90s tv shows i watched as a kid. And obviously a heap of movies lol. A lot of enjoyment in collecting physical media. Subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing and thanks for all of your nice comments!
Consider the following;
First Spotify is free with ads so people give all their CDs and records away
Then Spotify stops being free so it’s a small fee
Then Spotify is expensive
Now is a great time to collect blu rays and dvds they are super cheap at thrift stores compared to when I purchased them years ago
Very true!
make sure they aren’t damaged, they can damage the laser on your player.
I've been doing this for the past couple of weeks. Purchased all my favorite movies from multiple thrift stores for around 1-2$ each.
Thanks for this video! Nice breakdown of the benefits of physical media collecting. The quality of a good blu-ray or 4K beats streaming in most cases and owning your media is a huge plus 😀.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've been getting so many almost new blu-rays from thrift stores. It's awesome!
Plus if you own the movie they can't censor the movies because 0.00000000001 of people was triggered because of a movie was a product of it's time
Absolutely! I try to tell people this. Very few actually get it. If you love movies, get the physical copy.
Exactly!!
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Always loved having physical media. I have a good number of DVD’s, BluRay, XBox and PS games (PS4 and PS5). Still have some original XBox games 1st gen. Recently started going back and buying some old classic anime like Macross and Vampire Hunter D. Fun hobby!
Yes it is! I sold off a good amount of my retro videogames to upgrade my home theaters sound system but I do miss having a big collection of videogames. It is hard to find time to play them too though.
I started collecting back in 1997 .
Nice!
Wow 1997
You must be at retirement age huh ? 😏
@@HomeVideoHangouts Thanks man love your channel! Do you even think easy to find $10 360 games, PS3 etc, will even keep going up in value over the next 3-6 years? I DO NOT COLLECT for value, I just love holding, using them and putting them on display but wanted your thoughts
@@graciemckenna8283 I’m 44 and been collection since 1998..you sure are a donut aren’t you sweetie 😂
Another plus of physical media is creating your own "streaming service" by creating a media server from ripping your movies for personal use!
Just discovered your channel randomly just a few minutes ago. Man, what a great video on collecting physical media. I have a massive collection and have been collecting blu rays since 2010. Just upgraded to 4k last NOV. Still collect both. Awesome insight and please keep the videos coming.
Thanks for watching! I will!
You made some fantastic points in your video. I have begun collecting 4K UHD's of films i really like and would repeat watch, also picked up DVD's when 6x for £1 in charity shops and have always bought physical console games. I do think media centre's are a good compromise for people that like Netflix style content delivery but without the loss of content being taken offline, rip your films / tv to a hard disk and then stream it to any household device.
Thanks for the kind words!
New sud here/ for me, I started growing my collection again. I found people are going back to physical media also. I love movies and I’m love sharing it with others. I love having it in my hand. I just shot my first steelbook wall video. Let’s gooo!
Nice! Thanks for subscribing!
As a fan of stereoscopic films, the last few years have demonstrated most 3D discs are out of print now and as a result prices are rising and many are becoming hard to find. The best time to collect is always now!
Ya I bet the 3D movies will be harder to find or more expensive because a lot of people don't have 3D tvs anymore.
I got back into Laserdisc, spun Raiders of the Lost Ark Japanese Rental Disc. Until my player fails that is, since no repair or parts replacement. My small apartment streaming would make more sense.
Thanks for this video enjoyed it 😊. I'm still new to collecting movies but I have buzz for selecting and physical holding it in my hands, brings me back to blockbuster ❤
Im glad you enjoyed it! With blockbuster gone we have to start our own collections. My house is slowly turning into a blockbuster LOL 😂
eBay specializes in hard to find CDs, vinyl records and DVDs especially for the folks who love Italian horror films and rare slasher films from the 80s also eBay is good for finding nostalgia toys clothing jewelry ect
Yes! Ebay is important for all types of collecting.
You pay $$$, though.
i have 1300 dvds have never streamed and never will...
Thats great! Good for you!

Im glad i started collecting over 20 years ago

Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey there 🖐️ Jonny here. You popped up on my suggested today (because we review similar things I'm assuming). Great video. I'll check out more of your stuff over the weekend (sub'd in the meantime 😉).
Thanks! I’ll check out your channel as well!
Loved the video I subbed!
Awesome thank you!
It depends, the cost of Vinyl has almost doubled in the space of 2 years. Im in Australia. When i started getting into vinyl 5 years ago. It was pretty rare to see anything new over $30 AU. Almost everything had some sort of liner notes because that's what many love about the media. Today its $55 or greater for a new release and no liner notes on many releases. Retail stores like JB Hifi frequently would do 2 for $50 deals. It really helped me getting started. However i know that if i look after them, i won't be subjected to the righs moving between artists and labels and or streamers pulling the content because of political trends. Just last weekend i bought Moana and Encanto on vinyl for my daughter. She absolutely loved it. You don't get that experience with digital.
Thanks for sharing!
Amen
Brilliant subject
New sub ❤
Thank you!
Great video 👍
Thanks 👍
As a PC gamer, I can say I do not miss 5 plus CDs to install and a key code you had to have. I think movies will always have a physical market due to better quality on a disc but gaming disc is going away. Basically, anything on Xbox Series and PS5 you need a patch or maybe even online to play.
Good points! PC software has definitely gone digital quicker than other types of physical media.
I started a few months before the walmart and best buy announcements by complete chance and now those dvds overstock are entering the flipper market. Ive been getting sealed stuff at flea markets for $1 or less. Its insane. I wonder how long this flood will last before it dries out. I also do the goodwill outlet and a dvd is 15 cents. I know this wont last
Good points! We have to get the deals while we can!
I agree 100% Sir, i was listening to this while doing work , did you mention 3D movies, i didn't think so, but i think those are also worth collecting because you can also view these in VR headsets but the good ones are too expenseive now, if prices come down and more people get VR headsets i think alot more people will also want to buy 3D movies. Great video
Thats a great point about 3D movies and VR!
@@HomeVideoHangouts Thank you Sir !
No Problem!
Also. Support your local library. It's free to watch and read
Yes! Libraries are great as well!
The bargain bin at Walmart and complete series for 60 or less. Got south park 1-10 for 44$. Ad supported streaming with no sign up/sub like Pluto, Tubi and Roku.
If you grew up with blockbuster and cable, these are indeed good times especially when you consider cost of everything else with inflation.
Good points!
The same with my video games I will only purchase physical media that does not require the Internet to play games as a service or live service games. Whatever you wanna call them are a fraud when they’re being sold under a perpetual license and not a subscription license.
Its been a few years since i added movies to the collection but this year ive started collecting again especially with some of my all time faves coming out in 4k!
Awesome! Ya it's great to see more movies getting released on 4K.
been grabbing physical copies for killer deals lately, taking advantage of stores trying to rid the physical media stock is going to pay off later on...
Same! Great strategy!
I collect physical media DVD'S that is don't have streaming services
I always buy DVD's at target sometimes ebay or Amazon
Lover it👍🏻
Thank You!
Have a question about 4K Blu-ray that I purchased at Target that has a glitches in the disc. I recently purchased Apocalypse now final cut. I played the Blu-ray. It was great. I just got a 4K player and my final cut 4K disc chapter 7 freezes glitches won’t actually play but all the rest of the film chapters play and look fine. What does one do? who do you contact? to, get a new replacement copy of this 4K Blu-ray Disc of A.N final cut is it Lionsgate? On RUclips. There was another Apocalypse Now final cut 4K Owner that had a similar defect issue more or less in the same exact spot on the 4K disk were mine froze up and glitched out. I'm all for physical media, but if you buy it and it doesn’t work, what do you do?
Sometimes you can reach out to the studio to ask for a replacement but usually the best route is to reach out to the store where you bought the movie. Do you know for sure it's not your player? What player do you have?
@@HomeVideoHangouts I realized I had a bad disk after my 90 day purchase at target they did not honor the return. I tried calling Lionsgate and left a message and tried to get a hold of an exact and the guy just blew me off anyway thank you for responding. Much appreciated.
I agree at my local store You can get some really good Blu-ray bargains. Physical media is definitely on the way back Just for a few pounds slowly collecting my 4K movies
Awesome!
For example, today on Amazon, they are selling the old Christopher Lee movies for next to nothing on Blu-ray ones I don’t even have 😮😊
Ya I saw they have this Christopher Lee Blu-Ray collection heavily discounted amzn.to/3xTq8Gp
looks like it has 8 films.
@@HomeVideoHangouts good to get other peoples opinions on movies
Bought 2 DVD and 2 Blue-Ray this month
Nice!
You make excellent point hate to say I don’t buy physical media no more took to much space last physical Blu-ray I bought was Megan iTunes will not play uncut version for some weird reason after I bought movie., I converted my physical media to digital and kept some physical media box sets and steel books
Boxsets and Steelbooks are fun to collect.
Also, compare physical media to books!
It's almost like there should be some sort of store you could go to and rent movies. Wouldn’t that be neat?
I love dvds my local spot i get them 10 for a dollar ..even box sets for 10 cents
Nice! Glad you have a spot to get good deals.
💯 agree with everything you said they started off cheap and now they Ridiculous price I recently started collecting 4K
With the money I saved from cancelling all my streaming services I can least I’ll buy a couple a month if not more to be honest, you never seem to watch a movie when it’s on Netflix but when you put a dish in, you seem to sit and watch it and appreciate it more .,I do think streaming services won’t be round for long getting too expensive
I agree! Im more likely to continue watching a disc I bought rather than if im streaming it.
Good for collectors but if it isn't used or on sale, the prices are ridiculous. And buy a few players or you collection could become a large set of coasters if players don't start selling better.
I have found lots of used players cheap at thrift stores and it also helps that videogame consoles have players built in.
Year is back when everybody was with vinyl you could see the trend changing when it went to CDs. I could go to garage sales and I could get complete collections of next to brand new vinyl for dollars literally just five to $10 and every album would be in pristine collection. I picked them up because they were cheap. Did I need them know they were worthwhile to get and they look at vinyl making the resurgence same thing with this media crap I’ve been looking for certain types of DVDs that I know are worthwhile to watch and most of them would be the comedy sector of a series I have 2/3 of friends all this all the DVDs they put out over years literally for a dollar apiece and these dollar apiece have three or four DVDs in each series The hardest one to find is 2 1/2 men I just picked up series one and two each of them have four DVDs in it for a dollar apiece. I can’t tell you my source because it’s a donation to raise money for their their income and they’re not doing it from big money they’re just doing it for donations but I agree with you 100%. This is the time to go on out and pick up. DVDs really is like again my big emphasis I’d say pick up the TV series DVDs, if a TV show was on for 10 yearsit’s worthwhile to have because you’ll you’ll be watching them for weeks. Thank you have a nice day.
I’d hate to only just now be getting started. Lol
Why? It's never been cheaper
Especially if the internet goes down
Good point!
omg the space needed for it and the time it would take to actually get up and play a DVD. 😆
It's not for everyone but at least physical media can't be taken away from you.
With the exception of Netflix I never got into streaming. I won’t even stream music, if it’s not on vinyl records I don’t want it
I collect 4k blurays, but only the ones that I like and not in hordes. In my opinion, 2024 lacks the amount of titles Im interested in than last year, I liked many of the releases from 2023 like National Lampoons Vacation, Trading Places, and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the most exciting release Im remotely interested in right now is, I guess, Robocop 2.
I been collecting for years and it seems like it's getting more expensive
I have a great dvd and blu ray collection. I have a bunch of NES and SEGA games, however, Steam and GoG are my weakness. No physical games on Steam, how can I sell an unwanted Steam game?
Yes being able to sell is one of the benefits of physical media.
How many years do you think a DVD will last, and still be watchable (if stored correctly) ?
Typically 50-100 years. It varies.
I have so many dvds and other things that I am waiting for them to stop making
I live in Australia and the physical media scene is getting a bit of a resurgence here, even despite the closure of Sanity's retail stores. Physical media distributors like Madman and Umbrella Entertainment are still putting out great releases and while most of the businesses that stock physical media have gone online only (like Sanity), we still have stores like JB Hi-Fi and EB Games for physical movies, music and games. One tip I have for Blu Ray collectors in Australia is if you can't find a title locally, import it from the UK or Europe. Both regions share the same code (B) so releases from the UK and Europe can work in Australian players and vice versa
Im in Australia too! Yep JB still good here. Some stores slowly seem to be lowering the dvd/bluray sections, but still ok. Second dvds are everywhere, it's really good.
I would be interested to see what physical media stores in other countries look like.
I never got rid of mine 😂
I would love to collect DVDs but all the dvd stores here in the Philippines closed permanently and has no plan to reopen
Im sorry to hear that. Are you able to purchase them online?
@@HomeVideoHangouts yes I was able to purchase one online but man going around the store picking DVDs and vinyl's is nostalgic
Thats understandable. If you ever travel I'm sure you could find some places to shop in person as well.
@@HomeVideoHangouts maybe they will reopen in the future when DVDS get their popularity back but as of right now there's no sign of them reopening
Netflix i canceled 4 years.i see they have tv shows now.ill stick with physical
I've been getting DVDs at garage sales for almost nothing. Make offer for entire box. Get for 25 cents a piece!
Garage sales are a great place to find deals!
I never went for streaming, always physical so I can always watch my content anytime. Sorry, but I SCOFF at people deciding to switch away to streaming from physical ever since the early days of it. It’s like rental businesses like Blockbuster! Nope. Give me my discs please!
Yes! Ownership is important!
I buy my DVD CD VHS and records from eBay
Nice!
ive watched a couple of these types of videos and the one thing that seems to not be discussed when it comes to the online services is CENSORSHIP when it comes to what they allow you to see.
With the world getting softer by the day, im sure there will come a time that someone will find something offensive in Star Wars (for example) and Disney will simply remove it from what they show you online
I agree. Censorship is a big issue especially with Disney. I think all the streaming services are doing it to an extent though.
I don’t disagree but I like new content
If this man goes missing we know why
There is still a niche market for physical media and should be around for awhile. But it's over for the main stream. Younger generations are streaming on devices. No way are they about to start cataloging hundreds of disks to then manually search through, load on a player to watch. The physical space dedication alone is a non starter. It is over.
Good point! Although I will say I have seen the younger generation getting into shopping for records which makes me think some of them will consider collecting movies as well. Retro videogame collecting is definitely on the rise among young generations as well.
