Owning physical media is yours and will have always access to it streaming you don't own it and if the studio does not renew the license to the streaming services then they pull the movie and you won't have access to it again. I'm a collector so i always buy physical media
Totally with you. Reliable access and guaranteed quality are the biggest reasons for me. Most of my friends think it's nuts but I think relying on subscription services is nuts! lol
I think there’s a different purpose for both of them. Like I said, I watch a lot of great stuff through streaming service but Blu-Rays are how I support them and watch them going forward
Don't forget CENSORSHIP. There are movies being edited because someone got offended, and studio cowards are censoring movies and TV shows to appease the offended parties. Example: The first Spider Man movie. The scene where Peter is using his powers as a wrestler to make money. He jumps up, and trash talks the pro wrestler Bonesaw, "That's a cute outfit, did your husband buy it for you?" This scene has been "altered" so now Peter only says, "That's a cute outfit." If someone is so offended - be it a book, movie, radio show, TV show, music album, or play, they have the options of changing the channel, turning the player off, or just not picking up the media in question.
There's definitely a point to this. Censorship is all sorts of wack. I think we can deviate from a style of speech/comedy with completely cutting it out. If we censor our history, how do we learn from it? If we censor our art, what can we get from it?
To me, it makes more sense to just buy the DVD/Blu-Ray/4K UHD, instead of having every streaming service and maybe not even having that movie available. Plus I love having the cases on display on my shelf.
When I moved out of my parents house at 20yrs old i brought with me my collection of 1200 VHS tapes and about 100 DvDs. When I moved again, now with 2 children and a lot more actual "stuff" I was forced to ditch about 1000 of the VHS tapes because we simply did not have the room for them in our new home. Whilst my local second hand shop was delighted with the donation I myself was almost physically sick. There were movies in that collection that I have never seen available on DvD since. My current DvD/BlueRay collection is only about 200 strong and I miss my wall of movies so much 😞
Reason number 5: Special features and audio commentary. I've noticed that if and when any of these things are included on streaming services (they often aren't), they are treated sloppily and the best special features, like in depth interviews with participants of the film making process, are non-existent.
I just bought a dvd player today got rid of my streaming services and starting ny collection again. I miss owning my movies! Thank God I'm not alone in this.
i like to have total control of the stuff i bought. my oldest disc is from 1998, paid once long ago and still have the access 25 years later. perfectly manufactured discs should last a really long time. that disc from 98 live longer than many websites and went through so many digital changes, and still supported in latest Windows update. my biggest fear is that if manufacturers dont make discs as robust anymore though the packaging get fancier than ever.
@@JakeHageman I just watched the special edition DVD of Fight Club purchased from Amazon in 2000. It played perfectly and looked the same in 2023. That DVD was a one time purchase 23 years ago.

You made a great point, who needs streaming services when you can have the physical thing. I feel like we should all go back to using DVD & cd players to truly own what we buy.
Absolutely! And the pandemic was a big indicator of that for me. Internet and streaming service outages/crashes didn't scare me, I had hundreds of movies on disc to watch on demand!
I buy them because I don’t want any company to be able to take away my favorite movies and tv shows. Physical media has cool box art, it has bonus features, and it shows that you really value the film or tv show if you own it.
I know I'm late to the party, but 4k discs are also compressed. Even the 100Gb disc are compressed, but a lot of discs are only 66Gb. A digital film played at 2k resolution in a movie theater is roughly 150Gb. The full IMAX 1.43 print of Dune is 371Gb.

I have Dune, the 1986 Transformers movie, The Evil Dead (1981), Halloween(1978), Saw X, Scream VI, Rambo: Last Blood, the Lord of The Rings trilogy, and All Quiet on The Western Front(2022). I could probably stand to get a soundbar for my TV so I can have that enhanced sound, too.
@@JakeHageman hot take, but I don't care for Dune. The 4K is absolutely beautiful. But I found the movie really boring. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
It's still worth it to buy DVDs at thrift stores. I am buying Seinfeld a few seasons at a time on DVD. I just pick the nicest from the bunch. Sitcoms like this don't really need 4K high-frame rate.
That’s definitely understandable. I don’t purchase a ton of shows physically. I only have Breaking Bad and Avatar the last airbender, both of which definitely benefit from high definition
@@JakeHagemanThat’s interesting. All the reasons for owning movies are the same for me with shows: better video and audio quality, consistent access, support of the show, etc. Btw, fantastic video! Physical media is the best!
You are DEFINITELY not alone Jake. I'm totally agree with you 100%, man. I have NEVER bought anything digital (games included) and if I have (which would be rare), it's because it's not available physically. I'm sorry but all these people that are saying 'oh but digital is the way of the future and it's just so much more convenient' and crap like that, well firstly I hope you like it when your digital content you PAID for gets deleted from the servers of where you bought it from, because here's the thing. You paid for a 'temporary license' to buy your content (you don''t believe me, go and read the ToS attached to said game/product. It says it CLEARLY in black and white). Not a perpetual license so you can own it forever (yes there IS a difference for people that are also going to give the argument for PC software, especially photo editing software from publishers OTHER THAN those greedy pigs at Adobe). And secondly, for those people that are going to give the 'convenience' argument for digital, but I'm sorry but that's just sheer laziness in my opinion. How hard is it to go over there to a DVD/Blu-Ray Player or console and put a disc in so you can watch said movie or play said game and OWN it forever? Not to mention actually 'physically' going down to a retailer and picking a DVD/Blu-Ray/game up off of a shelf to SUPPORT brick and mortar retailers and the everyday people that actually 'work' in those places? Not very. Or is it too much of a challenge for some or most?
And the crazy thing is there's not much of a price difference. Most new blu-rays are $25, and purchasing a digital movie is usually $20. And you still get the digital movie with the physical release! What you get for the extra $5 is SO worth it. The physicality means so much. The VHS tapes I grew up watching Star Wars on mean so much more than if I watched them from an iTunes purchase LOL
I recently got into movie collecting and I've spent over $1200 but now I have over 240 films including over 40 in 4K. Feels amazing to own my favorite movies in the best or second best quality available. One movie in particular that I'm happy with is Anna and the apocalypse. I was lucky enough to see it in theaters with my sister and we loved it right away. Its not available on any streaming service so I decided to purchase it and ended up having to import it from the UK. But now I own it forever and it's beautiful. The UK edition even came with both the theatrical and extended versions on separate discs so I really got 2 copies of the movie. Feels great!
My number 1 reason for owning a physical copy is having the best picture and sound quality available My number 2 reason you can't censor my media I have on my shelf
After many years of being a pirate, I started buying some of my favorite Blu-ray movies based on my top favorites, my goal is to reach at least my very top 50 movies to this day, maybe some more extras as time passes by and new titles make the top list. i Its also crazy i thought pirated movies looked really good on my pc connected to my tv, i mean it never hurt having them for free and having the honor to watch any movie I want once they are available but I thought i was downloading the best quality yet, really did not know the impact of popping a blueray on my ps4, extremely noticeable details. So yeah, now that bluray is realively cheap thats one of my goals for this and the upcoming 2024. Maybe later on ill flipped them or something and start buying the ultra hd versions when they become cheaper.
Highly recommend going to 4K UHD if you can! But do some research first. Some like Oppenheimer or Top Gun Maverick are AMAZING, while others are awful like T2 or Pirates of the Caribbean.
I still rent Blu-ray’s and DVD’s from Redbox and rip them to my NAS. I do this whenever I find myself wanting to watch a movie or show that’s not available on Netflix, Prime, Hulu, or any of the other services I subscribe to. This is how I ended up with a vast library of ripped content, which I can play from any device in my home.
Another thing to consider is the future. We’ve seen a lot of these streaming sites merge and basically they’re creating cable all over again! We’ve seen them raise prices too. Who knows in the future you might have to pay $80 for your streaming service and you’ll still have commercials. It’ll be circle. Also, with this recent “software update” you never know if your internet, or a streaming service may be effected. With physical media you’re off the grid.
Thrift stores are a great way to find random and even obscure stuff people have forgotten. Salvation Army, Habitat, Goodwill, I ha e found some great stuff.
I have contemplated selling mine and doing streaming but I just cant bring myself to do it. I spent years collecting, I would never get any sort of return from selling them. It wouldn't be worth it. But I have gotten rid of some movies that I never see myself watching again so there is a few. Having reliable access (especially older movies that I grew up with) are always there. Plus a major reason is sound. It is always, always better on disc no matter what streaming. Now that i have a great 4k oled tv. Im getting some 4k movies that I only had on DVD to see how much better they really are.
Also, physical media means that public libraries can purchase the movie/tv series and make it available for their users. Very practical for public library users who may or may not have the money to purchase physical media and let's say it, simply to make it available at a lower cost for the maximum of people. Democratization of culture is always a win in my book ! :)
Good video. I still buy the odd Laserdisc and vhs. As for new stuff, if i want to see it, i go to the cinema first. If it was something I haven't seen at all I'll buy it. I also support importing 3d movies as they become increasingly scarce. There are so many streaming services now and i just don't want to pay so much each month for it.
In my case one of the main reasons is the quality, the loss of BITRATE in both video and audio is super notable, the DOLBY ATMOS loses a lot of quality, just do a bitrate test of the same movie in the 2 versions, the versions streaming and the physical version in 4K, and you can notice in the numbers the great loss of quality, and of course there is nothing better than being the owner of the movie and being able to watch it whenever you want
Censorship is why you should keep your collection and have a disc reader that’s not connected to wifi. No one can even get the original Star Wars trilogy that aired in theaters anymore. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the original trilogy without George’s new edits. It’s pretty sad that I’ll never experience the thing that people fell in love with
That’s a good point! It’s tough that I can’t get those theatrical editions in Blu-Ray or 4K. Highly considering taking the digital files I have and making my own Blu-Rays out of them 😂
Censorship can happen with physical media too. There is a sitcom that I watch that has cut scenes and edited music on the DVD's. The only way to watch the original version is TV reruns.
I don't think it will be gone. Think of how it started. We could only watch movies on cable, then we wanted to own them. VHS became very popular, we could finally own a movie. Then with video on demand people were convinced that they could watch what they wanted when they wanted. Once the stream services start to limit what you can watch, and increase prices, physical media will be demanded again.
Tbh, I don’t have a blu Ray player , but what i DO HAVE is a vcr 🥳 and I loveeeee vhs’s and I love to buy vhs’s of old movies that aren’t really available everywhere
Will always buy physical copies if I can. Movies, games, books, cds etc. It's just feels better to physically own something. And a thing to worry about streaming and storing shit on the cloud is that there is a higher chance of somethings becoming lost media. Just imagine all the obscure stuff out there that is still good but could eventually be lost and never be seen again.
Yep. That's why I'm concerned about streaming originals. I'm very fortune to have a handful of streaming originals on disc (Marriage Story, Sound of Metal, Loki season 1, and more). We need to preserve this stuff!
Nice commentary 👍 For me a big draw is also Blu-ray 3D. It's essentially the only way to get films in that format haha. But all of those films are also playable in 2D, so my friends get to understand the appeal as well through my plex server including all my DVDs and 4K lol. One note I know it was a quick explanation but it's worth noting that the video is always compressed. Uncompressed would never fit on a disc haha. Also, audio is nearly always compressed too (except raw PCM), but the difference is that it's typically lossless compression whereas video is never consumed in lossless form.
I will buy Blu-rays of movies I really like. I don't care at all about 4K. For me, the quality is better than a stream, and they usually give you the digital copy anyway which I like when traveling.
I love how a lot of classics look on 4K. I recently rewatched Wizard of Oz on my 4K disc and it was pristine. I am definitely with you on digital copies. I travel a lot and having a lot of my collection with me on flights.
@@JakeHageman Oh yeah I mean if they rework it where care actually goes into it (mastered at 4K with no revisionism) then sure it will turn out great. I have a few examples that are really well done (Alien, Lawrence of Arabia, Dark Water, etc). I just think most times these days I'm fine with paying $4-6 for a rental in 4K and watching something once or twice. I don't often revisit a lot other than the classics.
Quit right, digital or video stream services are nice for random watching or explore but physical media, quality and direct accesibility and last the extra features !
People never understand the collector (and ownership) mentality! I don't even waste my time explaining to them anymore!! In 10 years I can be watching something, that they will NEVER be able to see again....😃
I’m curious why you find it sad! I have BluRays and 4K because I like to have the highest quality available (sometimes that means Blu-ray over 4K). But some films have AMAZING 4K transfers, especially those shot on film. Jaws, 2001, Wizard of Oz, etc. Criterion collection does amazing work in that regard.
Two sentences explain why I collect physical media. I own it indefinitely, and I never have to worry about prime video or itunes losing the licensing for my favorite movie. Also, I never have to worry about it moving to a different streaming service.
I've already collected physical media but i noticed something about the players. I always owned sony bluray players but after heavy usage they eventually have problems. I decided to buy a new one but they were slimmed down with no features and bad quality and parts like the vcrs. I bought 2 sony 4k player just in case the buold quality goes down. Eventually they'll stop making them commercially and pnly high end ones will be available.
No features?! Sony blueray players have wifi, can stream Netflix and tubi, usb, dvd upscaling, bluetooth......no features?! What are you talking about?
I have 3 shelves full of various DVDs but I'm also a movie prop collector of my favorite franchises. My basement more or less has been converted into a man cave
What I noticed is people who streaming movies are not really movie lovers, more like movie likers... Streaming is more like let's watch something shall we see what's on demand. People who buy physical media don't want just to watch something, they want to watch that specific movie, because they love that movie...
Disney canned Artemis Fowl. I got to watch it three days before it permanently left streaming. Its not on Physical media either now. I quite enjoyed it. Pity I can't watch it again.
"Everything is on streaming anyways..." bs. The moment an actor gets into any type of heat, everything they were in is on the chopping block. That and not having absolutely everything conected to wifi is kind of freeing
Its nice to not give disney+ or paramount or some other streaming services money. I can watch the original 6 star wars movies whenever I want or indiana jones, Top gun. Or DC movies like batman so I dont have to waste money on Max. Or when Christmas time comes around like now I can also watch home alone 1 & 2 and dont have to give disney money to watch those kinds of movies. Something else for collectablility is I enjoy going to conventions and I recently got my blu ray of Deadpool signed by gina carano and have it on display in a protective case. And can still watch that or the digital version I redeemed if i want to. Was pretty cool cause deadpool was my first blu ray I ever bought cause the year before I got an Xbox one for Christmas and was able to watch blu ray. And maybe next year if I see someone I like I could have them sign one of my other movies.
That’s awesome you have that collectible!! I was explaining to a friend yesterday, it feels like I’m engaging in film preservation in a cool way. Keeping art alive!!
Same to me. I collect more CDs, Soundtracks- especially Game Scores. I hate MP3. I love the beautiful package of physical OST-Albums. Most japanese Game Score-Releases are godlike.
This is awesome! I used to collect CD’s but now i don’t have anywhere to play them, which sucks. I’m particularly proud that I have all the Star Wars soundtracks on CD!
The quality on blu ray is just simply superior to streaming services it’s just a shame a lot of what I like at least don’t have blu ray releases it’ll be nice I don’t care about cost I would find a way to afford it
Owning streaming movies is more expensive. I got 100 dvd's for $30 recently. Owning those same 100 movies via stream would easily be in the $1000,s of dollars. It's a huge ripoff.
When I recommend a movie, I ALWAYS get asked "what streaming service is it on?" and it's so much fun to say "it's not on one, I just own it". But it always deters them away. They don't know what they're missing sadly
@@JakeHagemanDisney are the biggest jokers announce they are ceasing physical media in Australia then a few weeks later announce 4K steelbooks of Prey The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 Loki season 1 and Wandavision for US market
the digital dystopia is here. i went on amazon where i have bought almost all of my physical media over the last 10 years and there is none available. i just bought DVDs as late as 2 weeks ago and now there's NOTHING! Its all streaming trash. the stories about your digital purchases disappearing if the stars or directors say or do something bad are going to explode. actors whole careers are being wiped out if they criticize the woke madness is already happening, look at Ryan Reynolds. i wasn't paying attention until like 4 months ago when i saw all the videos warning of this coming. luckily i bought 99% of all the movies i wanted long ago. if you wanted physical media now ebay is your only option. i hope the normy freak who think streaming is the bees knees are happy.
It has definitely helped me gain access to films I wouldn't otherwise have. I usually don't buy films until I've seen them, and so having access elsewhere is helpful. Films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest don't have a Blu-Ray release, which makes it hard to find them, but I originally watched it on Netflix.
You buy them so you don't have to pay every month to watch tv and than you own it if you decide not to pay every month! It's no wonder why everyone has no net worth use your brain!

My collection list: boxd.it/4dStE
Yeah, it sure does get expensive real fast.....
My number 1 reason for owning a physical copy is having the best picture and sound quality available
My number 2 reason you can't censor my media I have on my shelf
After many years of being a pirate, I started buying some of my favorite Blu-ray movies based on my top favorites, my goal is to reach at least my very top 50 movies to this day, maybe some more extras as time passes by and new titles make the top list. i
Its also crazy i thought pirated movies looked really good on my pc connected to my tv, i mean it never hurt having them for free and having the honor to watch any movie I want once they are available but I thought i was downloading the best quality yet, really did not know the impact of popping a blueray on my ps4, extremely noticeable details.
Redbox is GOATED! But the selection is so small though that it's hard to find anything good now
I love your vision of movie, Story Telling !
That's what it's all about! Film is such a dynamic medium for storytelling
Awesome video man!
Appreciate it!
CRYSTAL CLEAR
Another thing to consider is the future.
We’ve seen a lot of these streaming sites merge and basically they’re creating cable all over again! We’ve seen them raise prices too. Who knows in the future you might have to pay $80 for your streaming service and you’ll still have commercials. It’ll be circle. Also, with this recent “software update” you never know if your internet, or a streaming service may be effected. With physical media you’re off the grid.
That's a great point
Would you ever collect from the Salvation Army?
I've decided after ten years of collecting to get some movie titles from Thrift shops.
I have two local resell vendors of DVDs and Blu-Rays: Half Price Books and Game X Change. Haven't looked into Salvation Army, but I will!
I'm in too deep at this point 😂 but yeah the quality jump we've taken even in the last 20 years is INSANE!!
Awesome background music. What is it
I just found a bunch of indie-rock copyright free music online! Couldn't tell you what tracks though.
It’s pretty sad that I’ll never experience the thing that people fell in love with
You can on VHS! Maybe even Laserdisc. I have THX-1138 on Laserdisc and that's the original movie.
That’s a good point! It’s tough that I can’t get those theatrical editions in Blu-Ray or 4K. Highly considering taking the digital files I have and making my own Blu-Rays out of them 😂
They're on the 2 Disc DVD editions from 2004ish. I own them.
Censorship can happen with physical media too. There is a sitcom that I watch that has cut scenes and edited music on the DVD's. The only way to watch the original version is TV reruns.
K, I just found out from the ad on your video that we're getting a 5th Ghostbusters movie...
I plan on buying a record player
Thank you for the correction! I was more so speaking relatively, but I appreciate it!
I bought the Blu-ray for Mitchell's vs the Machine's love that movie
I have that one too! Great movie
Forget them people I collect them to I go to the thiftstore and buy DVDs and blu ray for a $1 or 2
Quit right, digital or video stream services are nice for random watching or explore but physical media, quality and direct accesibility and last the extra features !
People never understand the collector (and ownership) mentality! I don't even waste my time explaining to them anymore!! In 10 years I can be watching something, that they will NEVER be able to see again....😃
It's also something to do 🤷 movie hunting is so fun 👹🤸🔥
Correction 7:50 will be less compression on the disc.
Yeahhh I know that now 😂 got a LOT of comments like this hahah. But you get the point! It's a noticeable difference
I love films, I love physical media. I have VHS, DVDs, Blu Rays. Not that much 4K. I find it sad people only want 4K now.
They don't seem to be able to make players that don't skip.
I have 3 shelves full of various DVDs but I'm also a movie prop collector of my favorite franchises. My basement more or less has been converted into a man cave
That's amazing!
Yeah, I’m back to physical media after all the streaming shenanigans of late.
I don't blame you! Preserve art while we can before it's too late!
they can't be put behind lock and key by streaming plus not everything is online
When the pandemic happened, the internet outages and Netflix crashes had no effect on me. Had all my movies on demand! It was SO freeing.
Keeping art alive!!
subbed
thank you!!
I still buy physical media, and my younger brothers think im crazy. Until they cant find it streaming and HAVE to borrow it from me.
When I recommend a movie, I ALWAYS get asked "what streaming service is it on?" and it's so much fun to say "it's not on one, I just own it". But it always deters them away. They don't know what they're missing sadly
Great video man, all the reasons you gave were perfect. These PLEBS just don't get it smh
You got that right. I hate seeing Best Buy and Walmart reduce their physical media catalog
I wanted to rewatch Daredevil, Netflix's production and ffs I can't because they took down this title because of efing D+...
That is more of the work changing ownership than anything else. I would LOVE a 4K release of that show though. So incredible.
Because IT IS Not 2123....i love the smell of film collections in the morning...
Friends ask why I buy and collect physical media when you can stream it?
Same freinds whe they cant stream a certain movie Can I borrow your disc :)
I’d be like 💀🤦♀️ no buy a copy for yourself
number 1 reason: you get a copy of the film you love!
Pirate bay is still a thing lol.
There are so few decent movies now worth £30 to watch many times
Same reasons go here for music.
Yes!! I love my vinyls so much.
Mate, no picture on media is uncompressed
Yeahhhh I know that now 😂 but relatively, the point still stands!!
let's not forget censorship and banning episodes in streaming services
That's a REALLY good point. Look up what streaming services did to the film The French Connection. Kinda messed up.
Your lastname is a common name here in the Netherlands, do you have roots here?
I believe my family comes from Germany! Could definitely be wrong though.
Hello.
Also paying for a service for a long time is throwing your money away.
The day you cancel your service you have nothing.
I like Austin powers movies
Cool 🤘🏼
Physical for ever 👍 I have over 5800 movies , digital sucks you don’t own it . And your not supporting the industry.
WOW!!! And I thought my 430+ collection was good 😳
I collext video games
Because you’re a geek?
