Great video, sir! I recently got back into buying 4K and Blu-Ray movies after doing a big upgrade to my home theater system. It reminded me what terrible video & audio quality streaming offers. A well-made 4K disc (or even a blu-ray) just blows it away. Plus, I got sick of paying for countless streaming platforms where I didn't get nearly my money's worth. I'm back into buying movies & TV shows in a big way and I appreciate folks like you who urge people to get into physical media. Let's keep this community growing!

A really good video which reminds me why I love Physical media. I had ultra violet and fluster and feel your pain. I totally agree with you regarding cultural re-conning. There are so many instances where film companies start tweaking the original view of directors. Another reason why physical media is vital to preserve films and to encourage film companies to restore film.

What you missed on the money portion of your argument is the fact that you HAVE to pay monthly to watch streaming content. You don't pay and you're cut off. If you hypothetically stop collecting or cut back significantly you are free to watch what you own. It doesn't require a monthly fee.

Hey James I wish we could show our Physical media 4K"Collections" here. You started off 2023 with a great topic. Some people got the biggest 4K Tvs whether an LG OLED or Sony but no "Physical Media" collections to show on that high-end TVs. They are not really putting that "High-end" TVs to work. My fear is that people will come to us looking to borrow media when they find out it is the only way to go. And they know we have a huge collection of discs. My neighbor gave me all of her 4K & Blu-rays disc and went all the way with streaming.

But as I’ve talked about to experience truly the best visual & audio quality you need all the different elements 4K UHD Disc, Good Calibrated 4K Player including a properly calibrated high end display & audio system! Though it does seem the more people see videos like this & articles on the news talking about how with digital services you don’t own ANYTHING EVER, the deceptive practices of the digital services are coming evidently to light the more people see & experience it! Definitely important to keep collecting & supporting physical media!

Been a physical media nigga for years now. My interests/love for it came from always burrowing dvds from the library because my family was too poor to buy or rent them, along with the fact that we only had access to public television. Every time I did a quick stop at the library, I would stand there and admire how much media they had on deck and wished to have all that for myself one day. My journey of collecting physical media was initiated when my big brother gave me his friend's old anime collection; the rest was history. As the years goes by and my collection continuing to stack up, I'm getting more motivated to just cancel them all and go strictly physical. Though me wanting to watch the latest movies and shows, along with sharing my account with family is stopping me at the moment. My physical brothers will keep it down no less; also, I was wondering your thoughts on cable?

•Convince is a huge factor, sure streaming is just a click away. But the movie I want to watch is removed and I can't see it anymore.
•Besides that, picture and sound quality is always superior, and don't need internet to enjoy my movies.
•Tons of value with special features, different cuts, deleted scenes, commentaries, etc.
My only complaint would be language options. Now that boutique labels have taken control of most physical media, they offer less language options.
I remember when I was a kid, my parents would rent DVD because it was available in Spanish. Something the theater or TV didn't have. But now it seems that option is going away. HBO Max surprisingly has most of their films in Spanish language, in the US. Some that I didn't even know were dubbed in Spanish because the Blu Ray didn't offer it.

Great video! My family has been buying movies physically all the way back in the days of when vhs tapes were the standard, and then dvds, we have a lot of movies on DVD, then we either bought on Blu Ray or never did. As for me, I'm the only one in the family who still buys physical media with a whole collection of 4K Blu Ray movies I bought myself, and then there are some I thought of upgrading from the old DVD copies our family had for years, like I just bought a copy of Shrek 2 on 4K Blu Ray, upgrading from the old DVD copy because I just thought It was time for a upgrade

But your video is a massive wake up call and reality check and firmly puts me back in the physical media camp. Great video James! I absolutely love some of those special and limited edition single releases and box sets. I think anytime you change or edit a show or movie is a bad thing. You wouldn't paint a new nose on the Mona Lisa or scrub something off a sculpture just because it offends you or someone else. There are plenty of things that offend me but I would never try to change things to suit me, that's just ridiculous and maybe a little self righteous. If I wanted people making decisions for me, I would have never grown up and became an adult. Like you, I like to have all my favorite movies and shows physically in my home unedited. Thanks James!

Great video and I agree with everything you said about streaming especially about missing content. One thing you might not be aware of though that I felt I should point out in fairness in regards to changing music soundtracks to generic music is that sometimes happens in physical media too not just streaming. A quick example I can give you is the Diagnosis Murder Blu-Ray set we both own. In Season 8 on the disc that has the movies in the first movie Diagnosis Of Murder it ends with the scene of Dick Van Dyke's character tap dancing with a patient. What you may not be aware of if you never saw the scene when it first aired on CBS is when the music is played they are tap dancing to the Gospel song "Judgement Day". However, when it got released to physical media they changed the music which I personally hated because it didn't fit to what they were tap dancing to. I'm guessing it was changed because of a copywrite thing, but I just wanted to be fair point that out. Still, I'm glad I'm a physical media collector. I may get the Virginian someday now that I know what we see on TV is edited content which I didn't know before.

"I may get the Virginian someday now that I know what we see on TV is edited content which I didn't know before."
And this is why Emergency! is a staple for me on DVD now (notwithstanding the film damage and other artifacts on the third-, fourth- and fifth-season releases of that hit 70s NBC medical/action series, and that fact that many of the episodes on those releases have a modified sixth-season title sequence made for the syndie versions): because even though those seasons were remastered for FETV, METV and Cozi TV, the commercials in those channels' reruns take a lot of the scenes away, so they still feel incomplete, even if those episodes are remastered.

I have a massive physical media collection, and one of my favorite films is Sinister. I just knew that I needed to own that film. I will never give up the idea of ownership. Convenience has also left me feeling overwhelmed; so much easier to look on my shelf, look at a nice cover, and just be much more immersed, than watching it on streaming. Also, the Atmos tracks are much more better on disc.

I jumped back into collecting physical media when it came to my realization that a major drawback to digital streaming is that if your internet connection is choppy or unstable you can’t run streaming apps like Netflix or Hulu etc. without major buffering. This became an issue when going up to my family’s vacation home which happens to be in a pretty rural area and the connection there is not very good which made trying to watch anything on Netflix or whatever quite difficult.I have a LOT of DVD’s and Blu ray movies I’ve collected over the years but I’ve been getting into collecting certain tv shows I really enjoy too

I have a big collection of classic and modern day movies as I want to make sure they never disappear or only exist in cut and altered versions. It’s refreshing to see that you love movies as much as I do, that seems to be lacking these days in favor of viewers who think movies are purely social issue vehicles and have zero respect for any movie over 10 years old.

Here in the UK Blu Ray never really caught on DVD was king. As a result of this mindset people are now switching to streaming services because they think of it as cheap and convienient. Because of this attitude vast numbers of DVDs are being released onto the used disc market at really cheap prices. I don`t care that they are a DVD I would rather have an uncut uncensored DVD rather than a chopped and PC correct 4K. Most european countries have their own version of Ebay and are in the same DVD/Blu ray region, so its a buyers market. It is fairly straightforward to get a multiregion 4K player resulting in machines which basically any discs of any type from any where. This is the way to go for me. I long ago realised that streaming services would be subject the the prevailing political, social, cultural, religious beliefs and that as a result companies would give in and play safe. What offends me particularly is the use of generic music eg I have a complete run of Married With Children but the Frank Sinatra theme song "Love and Marriage" which is intended to be an ironic intro have been replaced by a generic nameless crap which ruins the opening ethos. I don't know if MWC is still available but i am prepared to believe it will be cut to crap by the PC brigade as it "offends" on so many levels thanks for letting me vent

The one thing I truly can't stand is the censorship that is becoming more and more prevalent. It is one of the reasons that I have yet to upgrade many of my disney titles to 4k. They are one of the worst offenders and seem to actively be fighting to kill physical media. Its truly a shame because their catalog is fantastic. Love the video btw.

And when you have streaming services and digital they are controlled by someone else band Yes quality is better on DVD blu-ray and 4k and special features and extended directors cuts are a must watch for me and so far it's only on Physical Media. Physical Media is the superior format great topic James🆒👍 oh wow James you have no streaming services? I have been a bluray community/forum member (same name)since 2007 and have over 15k bluray movies, 600 or so 4k and counting. DVD has shrunk to only about 1200 now.
The last few years I have been getting more and more scratched disc's that are brand new releases. Shout factory is by far the worst, they're scratched, smudged, and even have fingerprints on new day 1 sealed releases whether from amazon or directly from shouts center. Not sure if it happens at the manufacturer or when the disc art is printed. I'll buy 4 of certain ones like dog soldiers 4k or they live steelbook 4k and all the disc's are scratched, sometimes 4 is enough to get 2 good discs but sometimes it's not, crazy, maybe I should open them in a darker room lol.
I have 10 custom made shelves made from beach hardwood that are 7 feet high and 54" wide and my shelves and room are filled up anyways. So now I purchase 4K releases for action, sci-fi, and horror only. For animated, drama, and most tv shows, and less action stuff I just get the digital only. Then my kids can watch the animated stuff without messing with the disc's at all. It's a nice mixture and I don't need 4k for most animated stuff and it's nice to not have to switch disc's for the TV shows. Once your rooms get filled up that's a nice option for you. Just get the 4k releases that matter most. Or sell/giveaway movies you don't like.

I think I’ve said before the biggest killer for me is not only are they more expensive out of the country but then the huge amount you pay to ship them here. I know I had one company in Australia that took so long to ship me my stuff they offered me a free movie but the postage to send it from Australia was $30 and I can buy the same title here in the US for $24 so while it was a nice gesture on their part, it was kind of worthless.

One of the many problems that I have with streaming is that according to an article from the mid 2010s the quality of the video of a 4K video stream is only as good as a 1080p Blu-ray Disc and that’s at the very best quality and with HDR. If that’s the quality of 4K video on streaming than I am not surprised that HD and SD video dose not look very good at all in comparison to physical media. That and all of the other issues that you talked about (for example the classic episode “The Germans” of the classic 1970s British sitcom “Fawlty Towers” was removed from streaming services for a short time by the BBC after the death of George Floyd for reasons I will not get into here), is why I love physical media. I was really into physical media in the 2000s during the heyday of DVD, however I then got out of it in the late 2000s. I got back into physical media when the SF Bay Area was going into lockdown for the first time in March of 2020. This was when I read about streaming services reducing their bitrate even father in order to allow even more people to watch their streams due to the fact that many more people were going to be at home than they have been otherwise. I am sorry but that pushed me over the edge. I decided that I would rather watch my movies on DVD and especially Blu-ray. I live in a bedroom and I have almost all of my collection in my room. So if you even only have a small bedroom you still have room for DVDs and Blu-Rays. And I am not at all surprised about all of the things that streaming services do that make it so unenjoyable unfortunately. So for me nothing can beat physical media however for a very small number of things streaming is the only way to go. That is especially true when it comes to watching Formula1 without cable and watching old episodes of “This Old House” and “Flip or Flop”. Those types of shows will never be released on physical media. Otherwise I stay away from streaming. Lastly, yes physical media is not dead and the start of this possible new growth in the United States was started, in part, due to the vinyl revival of the 2010s.
P.S if you love old television than you need to get the television show Frasier on Blu-ray. It’s very funny, it has very good video quality, is in true 1080p HD, and the video quality is of course so much better than it is on streaming.

I don't currently have a 4k UHD player that plays 4k discs, Blu-ray's DVDs and CD's any recommendations for a 4k UHD player that plays all those formats that don't break the bank that a great deal for Christmas coming up...

I know to the best of my knowledge there’s one series that I own that was never on any streaming service and isn’t currently on any streaming service that I currently own on blu ray the Spider-Man 1967 series.

I saw someone a few days ago on The Lord of the Rings subreddit showing off a trilogy set of the films they had just bought on Blu-ray with the caption "I don't even remember the last time I bought physical media". I know their intent was to show that they love the movies so much that it's the one thing they care to physically own... but goddamn it scares me how much of the population relies solely on shitty, perpetually charging streaming services with extremely limited libraries.
Meanwhile I'm sitting here with about 8-900 DVDs, Blu-rays, and physical games, with probably at least 2-300 more on my ever-growing wishlist and I buy two or three DVDs and Blu-rays every week to whittle it down (though I somewhat regularly splurge and buy ten or so at a time every so often). Physical media is king. I like OWNING the things I like, so that no one can take it away just because some rights contract expired or some arbitrary bullshit like that.

One thing on my My Little Pony season 2 and 6 DVDs is that two of the episodes didn't escape censorship but they're unedited on streaming (I think) that I hate.
The Last Roundup and Where the Apple Lies are two of the episodes censored. Where the Apple Lies changed the word cider to juice which is ridiculous. And the Last Roundup changed a character that had a disorder for 'sensitivity reasons'. Hoping a complete 4K set gets released with all the unedited episodes of the show.
But still love all my other physical media that I have that weren't edited.

I did a quick and dirty count of my DvD collection, 1,000-1,500 discs, vs 7 movies I've bought on Amazon Prime. At least 2 of those becaused they were not available on DvD when I wanted to watch them. That's not counting my wife's separate collection.
I never got into streaming because I saw the way it would go after cable did the same thing in the 1990s (for me in London at the time)- spread the shows you want over multiple channels so you have to pay more.
That's before we get into the censoring, poorer quality, their ability to just cut you off at any time, etc. issues.
A chunk of my collection came with me fro the UK to the USA in 2009, so all my DvD players are multi-regional. Regions are another way to control what you can watch, and what you pay for it.
I love looking through my collection even if I don't end up watching a movie, just seeing the title on the spine reminds me of previous viewings.
If I'm going to watch with my kids I want the uncensored version, so we can talk about how culture changes over the years and so forth.

Since the beginning of broadcasting, virtually every signal is comprimised. It has happend in the past, it is happening now, and will continue to happen in the future. This is especially true with streaming because the content provider needs to make a profit, and profits only happen if you cut as many corners as possible.

What also bugs me about Disney is Song of the South is not on physical media or streaming/digital either due to it offending people thinking it's racist... It hurts me and makes me mad that the Disney parks are getting rid of splash mountain due to people being offended by the movie and the Disney park ride... Plus the Disney parks are to expensive for people with low income to go to the parks owned by Disney... The Disney Parks are only for the rich people... Plus streaming services like to hike prices too much for people to cancel their subscriptions... I can see streaming dying before I can see physical media dying... I have the streaming services like Max for the discovery content because none of the discovery content like HGTV Food Network and so much more don't have physical media releases like Peacocks competition shows like Americas's Got Talent doesn't have physical media copies and AGT on Peacock only the new seasons are on Peacock you can't watch any of the past season's on there either which makes me angry...

This is going to be a long comment, but I'd like to get it out here-- per what you said about the tactile feature of physical media when it comes to movies and television series (that you can feel how those releases feel, and how big they are, and enjoy the packaging and artwork and all): there is another subject that is somewhat unrelated to what you were talking about here, but is somewhat similar as well, and that is newspapers and magazines (especially newspapers).
Why is this important to me? Because many newspapers and magazines today are cutting down in print (and have been), moving most of it to digital, and leaving the print copies in extremely bastardized form (the Greenville News in my area is owned by Gannett/USA Today Network, and is one of perhaps at least 200, maybe more, of that chain).
The reason I dislike that is because it now costs $4 for a very-much-stripped-down "Sunday paper" (I put that in quotation marks because such things [and newspapers in general] are not what they used to be). This isn't the only case, however-- it now costs $3.50 for even a daily, and, worse, they no longer publish on Saturdays; worse, you only get 20-30 pages per day, so you get nowhere near what you pay for (40-50 on Sundays).
On these grounds, I started sometime ago to have a collection of old newspapers (spanning 1963-2003) from way-back-when (most of them, I have gotten from EBay); I have these on the same grounds you've explained here, albeit in a different way (the tactile feel of the paper, the size of the sections, the artwork, layout, graphics and pictures, etc.).
It's through this collecting, therefore, that I get to (and have gotten to) see what certain newspapers were like way back when, even if the papers I purchased under those titles were the final-ever editions (some of which I have seen and experienced in this manner have included the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the Colorado Springs Sun, the Dallas Times Herald, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, etc.).
I collect these because when I was a boy, a Sunday paper had far more than you get now (news, sports, weather, editorials, classifieds, TV guide, comics, local Sunday mag, Parade mag, etc.); daily papers weren't too shabby either, back in the day.
All that said, I thought I would bring this up to provide another viewpoint, hopefully, to what you were talking about here.

Becoming a movie buff more and more. Can not stand the way streaming compresses video content or edit. So I will go out of my way to get it on disc. I want to experience things the best way I can
