There's a fine line between being a collector and being a hoarder.
One must ask oneself... "Is this worth watching again?"
    Peace on earth.

I like to collect things I love. Movies like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation is a tradition for me to watch at Christmas and the streaming services just don't show it, so even though I only watch it once a year I love owning it.

Ya for me is if your reallt collecting you want to display play make sure it's cleaned up ect. It doesn't look like piles of trash that someone can't bring themselves to throw out. Imo it's hording when it's not uniform and it's all over the place not on shelves ect..

Well certain Movies you only watch once or don't plan on keeping will double or triple in value right after you sell it cheap. Happens all the time. Theres a balance we try to keep. If theres a movie I want Like MonkeyBone on anchor bay Ill let a couple other titles go cheap to another collector so I can get a new one I want.

This is exactly it. I basically just buy food and what I collect. My friends will criticise how much I spend, when they're out spending $20+ a few times a week on meals out, then more on coffee and other small items. I don't see an issue either way, as we both get enjoyment from what we spend on, but I like having my purchases be permanent items, rather than something I consume or throw away.

I only have 2 rules I think any collect needs to follow to stay sane and to keep enjoying the hobby:
    1) DON'T give into FOMO (indulging in FOMO here and there is fine. We're all human. But don't make it a habit)
    2) don't be afraid to let your collection be fluid - as in, it's ok to get rid of some stuff here and there. Just because you bought it, doesn't mean you NEED To hold onto it forever. I cleared up a LOT of space and made a bit more collecting money getting rid of discs I realized I didn't have much investment in or attachment to. If you really take to the time to go through your collection and think about it, you'd be surprised at how many discs you can let go of. And that just makes it easier to get what you really love/want.
Collecting physical media is like collecting anything else: You need to work out how it works best for you as an individual. That includes space, budget, curation, pruning as needed, having self discipline with splurging and blind buying, FOMO, etc.
If you're gonna dedicate time and money to collecting physical media, figure out a plan of action first before you go hog wild.
If you have a plan that works for you, it will make collecting FAR more enjoyable from the outset.
That's not to say you have to always be 100% rigid and unmoving with the rules you set in place - but following them for the most part is the healthiest and easiest way to curate a collection you love and are proud of.

Yeah, I never let anyone borrow my physical media anymore. I used to a lot back in the day, but I rarely got it back, they'd say "oh yeah, sorry, I forgot, I'll bring it next week I promise." But they never would. Ornif they did, like you said, it would come back trashed. For some reason people who borrow stuff never take care of it.

All of these points are abosolutely valid. I've been collecting for decades, and sadly, i've had to restart my collection once before after my house was broken into and all my movies were destroyed in the process when i lived in Boronia way back in the day :( Now my collection has grown enough for me to feel like i'm back to where i was back then, with some cool physical copies of unreleased movies that nobody else in the world has. I’m in my 50’s now, I’ve been collecting since the VHS days, I love physical media but every time I upgrade I tend to sell the other version or at least only keep the disc itself itself if it is different(a DVD, edit version, features) then place in an disc envelope into the blue-ray or 4K case to add to the rest so not to have a separate case for every single different version, this way my shelf’s don’t become overloaded so quickly, another thing you need to think about before collecting so much is what will eventually happen to your collection once you’re gone, cause let’s be honest, most of our family and friends have no interest in our hobbies, most of our collection has no value to them even though we know that a lot of our collection is very valuable and can be sold for a lot, but most people don’t think of disc as valuable like baseball cards, comics, coins and stamps collecting, our stuff will be thrown away, donated or sold for pennies on the dollars, give this some thinking before trying to collect everything cause you can’t take it with you, me personally I am selling and downsizing my collection to the movies that are nostalgic to me so I can relive the best memories of my life

Great points and agreed about all of them! One thing I also find myself struggling with at times is the constant re-ordering of shelf space. I have a bit of a weird system for it (genre, then country or actor or label, it's a bit all over) but when I run out of space I basically have to take everything out and re-order again. Can take up to 2 days 😅 So try to plan ahead but it's always a bit of a struggle.

Just stash the ones that mean the most to you in a CD binder to save space and toss out the cases. It's all just a bunch of cardboard and plastic that's eating up space. I was all about DVD physical media in my 20's, but i i have zero interest in it anymore. If anything, scoring sealed VHS copies of some of my favorite cartoons or movies from the 80's and early 90's sparks more nostalgia. DVD's are a 2000's 'thing', when pop culture was absolute garbage. :P But to each their own. Everybody is on their own little journey, do what brings you joy and happyness!

    • @rolandofgilead43
      @rolandofgilead43 Месяц назад

This would be my 4th video of your content that I've enjoyed, time to subscribe lol.
I like how while we are thousands of miles apart (Californian here lol) we have the similar issues with physical media, i'm always like being told to sail the seven seas for the movies , and I'm like "but muh bitrate tho" which flies over their heads.
I fell out of love with streaming kind of recently with Castlevania on netflix, it was the final few episodes of season 2 and the bitrate made all that beautiful animation crisp up like a chicken nugget of ugliness, it was awful lol.
My homies were like "why are you starting a collection with all these convient options?" and I was honestly replying that I wasn't going to collect everything, just the things I like, which is how it starts I imagine hoo-boy.

Another thing that rarely gets mentioned from 4K collector RUclipsrs is that some 4K's have freeze and skipping issues. I just tried a playthrough of The Dark Knight for only the 2nd time and I've been hit hard by this issue out of nowhere. Cleaning disc hasn't helped. Had this issue happen with 2001 A Space Odyssey, Ready Player One and managed to move past this issue on Braveheart by cleaning. Some discs and or players are faulty.

I think the intention at the start when film was invented, was to visit the cinema and watch. Then VHS was to rent what you wanted to watch at home and then return. Then we started buying home video, we bought what we wanted to watch again and again. Now the world has changed, where we feel we want everything whether to watch or just to display.
    Perhaps it's a modern addiction.

    • @rolandofgilead43

or people are just lazy these days and most of them don't realize that streaming is nothing but renting a movie they think they own it but than if say netflix loses the rights to it because their contract expired they get pissed it's no longer there. but if i want to pick up season 1 of Supernatural on Bluray i can go to my shelf but on netflix the music is changed. and for some tv shows streaming sometimes edits tv shows as well Netflix does that with the cross overs if they don't own the cross over and a cast member is in one show from another show they don't own. case in point SVU they've edited that cause they don't own chicago fire.

They moved and instead of trying to get my games back to me they left them in the place when another one of our friends moved in. That friend lost or sold them. I think there should be new digital physical media. Micro SD is sufficiently cheap enough now. Have a dedicated touchscreen for digital print material. Maybe even dedicated SD magazines for servers to use, best of both worlds?

I don't like loaning out my DVD's, either
Damage can sometimes be unavoidable, unfortunately.
My issue is with them saying "not watched it yet..." and then takes 6 months to return.
Things can get quite awkward by then
Also, my collection is entirely my personal taste and wasn't intended to leave the house, tbh...watch it at mine, if invited to, or buy your own 👊

New subscriber here. I’m a big time physical media collector who rips all my physical media from VCR to 4K to my my PLEX Media Server for my personal ownership and use and no one else but my household family and friends (which are only 4 people). I still have all my physical media stored for easy access if I really want to pop in a movie. But more often than not I can stream full quality within my home network. Full quality of whatever it was I ripped. It’s basically my personal “Netflix” except in full disc quality. I get what you’re saying mate. But I personally like the combination of owning the physical media and streaming it through my PLEX interface at will in whatever format of SD all the way to full fledged 4K Dolby Vision/Atmos. It’s cool, you may want to try it out one day. But either way I love your channel and you put out good, honest, practical content. Thanks from the USA brother 🇺🇸 😎👍

Collecting comics, albums, books, models, videos, manga, would be impossible if I didn’t own a home, and even with a two bedroom, I’m cramped. I don’t even have a large collection, and someone in an apartment couldn’t have the stuff I’ve accumulated. Honestly this is one of the reasons that I’ve shifted to buying much more digital media when it comes to stuff I’m just curious about; one the price is often significantly cheaper, and when I travel I have access to it. The other thing is that because of space consideration a lot of stuff isn’t immediately accessible because it’s boxed up in the attic somewhere, and I have no idea where it is, even though I know every thing I own, doesn’t mean I’m going to be able to necessarily find it. I’ve actually rebought stuff simply because I couldn’t find the copy that I owned when I wanted to watch it, or read it. lol.
Also I’m been trying to get my hands on some Vegimite ever since that Men At Work song back in the 80’s.

Being married to a wife that doesn't share my love for physical media in a relatively small house, ive had to make comprises. Basically i have around 450 blurays on display, and the rest are in sleeves with the slip cover. I have secured space for another 200 on display but the rest will simply have to be sleeved.
Perhaps one day ill have a larger house and i can go all out. But until that day i gotta do what i gotta do.

8:00 Not just that but you're also lucky in my case if you ever get it back. I've lent a dozen or so games to actual relatives over the yrs and the number of times they either don't give it back, or think they've already given it back etc... is frustrating to say the least. Then a year or so goes by and they end up trading it in to get a newer game or cause they're upgrading console etc forgetting where it even originally came from. Bye bye my copy of Demon Souls... Yeah no more.

I believe I have a knack for finding good eBay sellers. And the ones that aren't, maybe at most two a year for me, you can easily get a refund from eBay. The craziest seller I had during the pandemic claimed my pay method was faulty, but wouldn't drop the transaction. Had to call EBay and talk to someone. A few text messages are usually all that's needed. But this seller (it was for SNES Doom), was full of sh*t. The worst experience for me, but I still kept my money.
