    Physical Media Forever!!

    • @sideswipe1261

      Every chance I get I buy physical media! Music or movies, I like having the discs in hand, the booklets, case, highest quality and nobody can tell me I *don’t* own it!
      Some companies are trying in court to claim consumers *do not own* the digital media they bought! Nope! They gotta come to my house and try to take what I paid for!

      @CockworkOrange 3 года назад +10

      @@Harlock2day I have to disagree with you, but that is just a personal thing. I think having the movie as a disc stored in your shelf is far better than digital. You know if you have the disc then the movie belongs to you nothing can happen there. With digital or streaming there can always be a problem with internet, account things, licensing problems and so on. So it is technically not yours you are just renting it basically forever. But I completely understand your point too. As i said, just a personal thing for me :)

    • @Harlock2day
      @Harlock2day 3 года назад +17

      Not only but streamers control what is out there in their catalogue and may choose to withdraw a title from their catalogue. With discs you are in control.

      @Matt Risnes They've already censored or removed movies. Maybe not the ones you want to rewatch, but it has already happened.

    • @alexxbaudwhyn7572
      @alexxbaudwhyn7572 3 года назад +5

      Besides highest video bitrate available and lossless audio, biggest long run reason for physical media is control, mentioned by others.
      Pride of ownership of a well curated, thoughtful, well maintained film collection is also a major source of HT/film/cinema geek street cred
      😎

    • @alexxbaudwhyn7572
      @alexxbaudwhyn7572 3 года назад +2

      @Matt Risnes While I agree that streams from the major players in recent years has improved re video quality and can be quite excellent and convenient, the long run issues of ownership, control, censorship, etc, are other reasons for discs as others have stated.
      Just wait for unskippable ads and previews in the stream world.
      And removal of politically incorrect content and scenes moving forward. See most vintage WB and Tex Avery toons.
      The only other way to get 4k disc bitrates and lossless audio is the the Kaleidescape system used by wealthy HT owners. So if discs go away, only the wealthy will have access to the highest quality level, just like the old days prior to dvd and ld, when only the wealthy could afford a 35mm or 70mm projector at home, and rent or buy film prints for personal use

    I haven't been able to pick up the Hitchcock set yet. I'll go with Joker, Midsommar, RAD, Jaws, Doctor Sleep, 1917, LotR, Beastmaster, Dictrict 9, Columbia Classics Vol 1, Zombie, and Flash Gordon.

      1917 and Joker are big omissions from a best-of-the-year list. I'd also have to throw Total Recall in there.

    Its been an Awesome year for 4K releases, I've bought so many UHDs this year, my favourites are LOTR, The Hobbit, Jaws, Flash Gordon, Columbia Classics, Back to the Future, and Bloodshot because it looks and sounds so good. One good outcome of coronavirus has been the huge number of excellent catalogue releases this year.
    Like you say, the Columbia Classics is the best set I own, the care and attention to detail is outstanding. I will preorder Volume 2 in a heartbeat.

    Right out of the gate I agree wholeheartedly with you on your assessment of LOTR. Asking for perfection is not just a lot, it's an impossibility because, objectively speaking, perfection doesn't exist. Each person's definition of "perfection" varies by their subjective criteria.

    So everyone is obsessed with 4k, but movies and TV are shot in 2k, so 4k Blu-rays are just upscaled discs too get a higher resolution. For that you have to pay $30 per movie? You can't even see the difference between 2k or 4k.

    I understand completely why you say what you say about the Columbia box-set; I respect it. But I completely disagree. I have nothing against box-sets; I bought, in fact pre-ordered the Hitchcock set you have at No. 5 here, I bought the Criterion Bergman film-set and put it under the Christmas-tree for myself; I own several other sets of films, and am already saving up cash for the Wong Kar-Wai set being released in march. But they all have one thing in common; they share something important beyond the studio which made them: A Director, an actor, a trilogy of films; there's an important connection which binds them together. The Columbia box-set is sold as it is ONLY because a studio wants to blow its own horn; the ONLY thing the films have in common is the Columbia screen. I have less than no interest in Tom Cruise, and even if I had to buy a Cruise-film, it wouldn't be Jerry Maguire. That film is then bundled with a couple of films which make many of the top-50 lists of films of all time, by Directors who stand heads and shoulders above the average in very select company. I cannot support these box-sets which go against everything I believe in with my collecting: I spend money on films I love; films I want to own with pride, which I will want to rewatch and revel in; Jerry Maguire, and frankly, A League of Their Own are NOT such films. If other fans of your channel are either A: lovers of all of the films in the Columbia-set, or B: willing to spend their hard-earned dollars on films they don't like (and I'm assuming some will be getting it for exactly the films I don't want!) to get the ones they DO want; fine, enjoy yourselves! I will not pay $100 for two films and what I regard as useless filler. Again; I respect your heralding this set; I'm glad it's available! But I will not buy it. And if they now release a Vol. II with a mix of gold and dross; it'll sadden me deeply.

    Thanks Jeff for another great review, yes definitely save physical media, there is no other choice, I have a massive blu-ray collection and I just love the fact that when I want to watch a certain movie, anytime, I can always pull it off my shelf and push and play, without physical media you have to rely on streaming services Hulu, RUclips, Netflix etc streaming on a sometimes horrible picture and trying to find certain movies, old classics, 80's movies etc, most of the time they don't even have it on their sevice. Keep up the great work!

    The Booklet and 1080p Blu-ray are the same as in the Universal 100th anniversary blu-ray digibook release of Jaws from 2012. Unfortunately its only the US slip box/lenticular cover set that contains the booklet. WIth the steelbook missing out. Agree. Due to whats happening in the world. This year has been mostly older re-releases on 4K. Which is a good thing.
