WB stepped up this year and had some solid top 10 picks. It was a rare if not, once in a lifetime chance to compare theatrical mixes to home systems, same day.. The streams were only decent but fortunately we get the quality physical discs too. Great list 👌
Great list shane I knew snyder cut and the suicide squad and chaos walking would be on this list. Can't wait to check out dune again, it sounded amazing and looked great in the theater.

I would add The Green Knight to the list. Sharp and colorful image with solid black levels, and immersive audio. The movie itself is another story but at least in tech specs it's a champ.
My favorite 4K for the year was The Final Countdown. The shots of the F-14's flying over the ocean has tremendous depth and rivals Top Gun in many shots.
Wish Master and commander, was in uhd. Great movie, and a great demo, especially the scene when the ship is attacked, and the opening scene with the creaking of the ship..
Great list, my picks for best 4k demo discs include Candyman 2021, The forever purge and Space jam 2 New legacy. These are the cleanest and great sounding discs this year. Candyman in my opinion has the best Atmos sound I heard this year, it is atmospheric and very unsettling.it had the hairs on my neck standing. Candyman 2021 is my number 1 disc of the year.
I am nitpicking but both zynder films had imax sequences but in the tech specs you said they were shot in 35mm, should it be 35mm and imax? Otherwise great video
@@therealshanelee I see so its shot in 35mm and no IMAX camera were used but when we say the "IMAX" scenes they are just cropped versions of the 35mm that was shot. ZSJL and quiet place 2 are the only ones I’ve expirienced out of your list but they both sounded great (i don’t have a 4k display but I do have 5.1.2 atmos). After seeing a few positive reviews for the audio quality I decided to buy Monster Hunter... and it's honestly one of the worst audio mixes I've heard in a long time! Yes it's loud and the bass hits hard in the intro, but there was absolutely no subtlety to it what so ever IMO! I just got worn out by the sound of characters rolling on the ground being as loud as gun fire and explosions, so ended up just turning the volume way down to make it through to the end of the movie. Dune, on the other hand, was a perfect mix in my room!
I can't do the DC movies. I just don't like their style. I continually fall asleep. And while Godzilla v kong is all the things you said, you neglected to mention that the audio is very quiet. I had to go to near reference level to match other movies.

Doesn't Batman v. Superman Ultimate Edition crop the sides off in some scenes? Like it wasn't shot with IMAX cameras so didn't Snyder just crop the aspect ratio to give it the feel of IMAX? It's like one step forward and one step back, more on the top and bottom but less on the sides? I'm legit looking for clarification here from somebody that has seen both.
He did shoot some scenes with IMAX cameras, just like Nolan does on his films. No cropping. In fact you can see the comparison in this video at 11:30. More picture at the top and bottom and same sides.
@@MattyDante that's right. The home releases for the Nolan films and others crop the IMAX scenes to a 16:9 ratio to match a TV. Snyder left them at the full IMAX ratio of 1.43:1.
Dune has a beautiful cinematography and its dolby vision MEL mode is quite an eye candy. The desert looks fantastic in the daylight on dolby vision. But I'm not a fan of the excessive soft look manually introduced into the movie. Certain shots of the film, even without digital effects, can look like 2k rather than 4k imo, even on this UHD disc instead of HBO MAX streaming.

I KNOW from another youtube video from reviewer in Ireland that they have the 4k versions with atmos sound already of "TWISTER" and "DAYLIGHT". THANK YOU.
These are reviews of physical 4K releases, not 4K digital streams. I’m sure the transfer will be good since it’s a WB release. However, I for one won’t be picking it up because I was not a fan of that film.
No time to die doesn't belong. Beyond that, very good. Unbalanced sound mix. The Atmos isn't doing much. Voices go from ok to 'what?' Outside of HDR, its obvious there's a better master out there. The cropped imax isnt great. Venom 2 isn't as good a movie, but audio/video is leagues better. 'only doing Atmos/dtsx, eh. Take the phantom menace. The dts-hd mix is better than the newer Atmos one. Here are my useless, irrelevant, pointless $.02 comments on the quality of the ten movies chosen. My list completely ignores audio and video quality and is strictly about the quality of the films themselves. Your opinions may vary: 10. No Time to Die: a very well made movie and excellent fitting send off for Daniel Craig’s tenure in the tux. 9. Monster Hunter: absolute intelligence insulting junk. I think the only point of PWSA’s career now is to make movies so that his wife can get cast in it. Also, how does this hack still get funding for his movies and why does Capcom still allow him to get anywhere near their IP? 8. Mortal Kombat: an okay reboot of the franchise that is still full of silly nonsensical moments. The lead character is wooden and uninspired but Scorpion and Subzero are the MVPs of the production. 7. Elysium: a okay movie with great SFX and heavy-handed message but nowhere as good as Blomkamp’s best which is District 9. 6. Justice League: an absolute slog to sit through that is painful to watch. The additions and subtractions Snyder made did not appreciably improve the movie because the original writing has tons of problems. The best part is that this will be the last DCEU movie that Snyder directs because WB has moved on from him. 5. Chaos Walking: I didn’t see it. Neither did anyone else. 4. A Quiet Place II: overrated with an abrupt sequel bait ending. The script felt rushed and unfinished and so does the movie. 3. Godzilla vs. Kong: an absolutely ludicrous over the top movie with a thin plot used solely as an excuse for shameless overacting (especially from Bichir and Gonzalez) and 1s and 0s in a CGI computer colliding against each other. 2. Suicide Squad: a bare minimum reboot improvement over the first movie. A movie that thinks it’s funnier than it actually is like the class clown who tries too hard. This movie’s biggest sin is not doing anything whatsoever to move the overall DCEU forward or give it any much needed momentum. 1. Batman v. Superman: SAVE MARTHA! Miscast manic Mark Zuckerberg hand feeding Jolly Rogers to a senator. Depressed bipolar Superman. Ridiculous Batman wet dream where he fights Superman’s Nazis in the desert. Zack Snyder. Honorable mention: Dune: a very good visually stunning movie with an abrupt ‘PLEASE GREENLIGHT A SEQUEL!” ending.
I found showing new viewers the first part of Quiet Place 2 to the opening credits then switching to Quiet Place 1 avoided the confusion on what was going on…..in 2021 I enjoyed searching for, and watching in 3D, Monster Hunter and Godzilla V Kong. whats in your top 10 then?
Most of these movies suck from a plot/acting overall rating standpoint. Mortal Kombat and Kong are trash
I found showing new viewers the first part of Quiet Place 2 to the opening credits then switching to Quiet Place 1 avoided the confusion on what was going on…..in 2021 I enjoyed searching for, and watching in 3D, Monster Hunter and Godzilla V Kong. Oh no where is My Fair Lady? Is it in the closet with ‘The Ten Commandments’?
