What is most surprising is that the "ultimate collectors edition" of the Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit doesn't have the appendices and BTS discs, yet the remastered Blu-ray extended edition set does? It's really bizarre and its clear that it was just a cash grab.
That's the thing that pisses me off the most. Including even the original DVD version of the Appendices in the Collector's Edition should have been required. But, even though the movies were greatly improved by the 4K transfer and HDR, what really NEEDS to have an upscale or remaster done to them is the Appendices. I don't know what digital camera the special features were originally shot on, so maybe getting a higher quality release of the Appendices is impossible. But
The problem with modern films like Inglorious Basterds is that there's nothing to re-scan. Films made pre 2003 have a cut negative, modern films because of digital intermediates break their link back to the original negative once they are scanned. And many of them are scanned at 2k. A restoration would require a complete overhaul, scanning the uncut negative again - they're not going to do that.
Some big studios have scanned their negatives in a higher resolution than 2k but the process to downscale them to 4k costs too much so they just got with the 2k scan on some versions especially doing color correcting is a pain. They were doing color restorations on old films rig when 4k tvs came out and before 4k Blu-ray was a thing. Its very expensive and time consuming
@@domcoke my point is those films are converted to a higher digital resolution thats more like 16k and some movies are not downcoverted due to cost and they used 2k copies to compress Blu-ray. They ended up using the 2k conversion since it was already done and technically better looking over the 1080 Blu-ray version. They don't always need to rerun the negative but the cost to convert the video and time is why they don't. Most of the time anniversary versions have a bigger budget to allow new conversions and treatments.
@@buddychrist I have re-read your reply 3 times. I don't know what you mean by "those films". There are no film negatives that are scanned at 16k. There are *some*, like those that are shot on 65mm that are scanned at 8k. But these are rare. What, exactly, are the cost implications of downgrading something to 2k? [I'm already regretting asking this - cos I'm anticipating word-salad] - Perhaps English not being your first language is getting in the way here. Do you know what a cut negative is? And how this differs from the ENTIRE camera negative having to be scanned in at a higher resolution?
I’m STILL salty about that “Ultimate” LOTR box set. I missed out on those nice steelbooks because I held out for this one. At least I still have the awesome Extended Edition Blu-Ray set that has all the bonus features.
Another thing about the Star Trek 4K release. They are currently working on the 4K restoration of the director’s cut of the first one. So while they are doing that, they released this set with only the first 4 which includes the terrible theatrical cut of the first one. Meaning you’ll need to buy the first one again when they finish the restoration. They should have just waited an extra year for all of them to be finished.
Despite the negative tone, this was an extremely helpful and informative video thank you Jeff! After showcasing the disappointing packaging of The 4K Criterion release of “Citizen Kane” , I think I will now opt for The Studio Canal UK release which seems more user friendly. Happy holidays and a very Happy Christmas to you and your family!
@@richellebrittain2127 I already ordered the Studio Canal version because of how ugly criterion’s packaging was. So as soon as I get my replacement disk I will try to sell it.
@@richellebrittain2127 your right I ordered it from Amazon UK. And I like the Studio Canal version of Mulholland Drive. But I wasn’t gonna double dip on that one too.
Love your channel Jeff,& your input has been very valuable to us. My wife actually watched this episode with me & sure enough she said that Paramount was double dipping on us Trek fans. I'm actually very proud of her for learning how this happens in physical media. Also I still have gripes with Paramount about the Indiana Jones 4K set. Excellent transfers, but one would think that Spielberg & Lucas could've went all out for a the 40TH anniversary of Jones. And yes both sets looked very generic. As for LOTR/Hobbit 4K sets great save. I picked up both used sets for $125. There was no way that I was paying double for a lackluster set. I'm still pissed at Disney for the Star Wars 4K set. Again thank you for your work, & have a Merry Christmas!!!
This was one thing I disliked about both Blu-ray and 4K. Barely any special features. Now dvds on the other hand, mostly had the best special features.
@@tomwells8093 There's almost always room. But you can also add a separate special features disc. The problem is that the studio's just don't want to spend the money to produce extras anymore. Not to mention, part of the reason DVDs had so many features was because it was a new and novel concept. We never had a way to cram hours upon hours of bonus content onto a disc until DVD.
@@wright96d Very true. Studios get cheaper and cheaper all the time, so they realised not that many people care about the special features. They will do a special collectors edition only if the movie is a big hit. Add in the size of the movie with the high end audio on the disc and it just further made them abandon the extras
@@wright96d I agree my blu-ray of Avengers Endgame and Titanic both had a separate blu-ray disc for bonus features. Since both movies are 3+ hours long.
I'm glad you put that Indiana Jones set on there. In my opinion, there has never been a physical media release of those movies with good artwork and this new one is as bad or worse than the ones in the past. The disks are great but that packaging...
@@CaptainSpalding72 I've got that release and I don't care for it. It's got that cartoon looking picture of him swinging the whip on the cover and the individual cases are more logo than artwork.
*honesty is the best policy!* The only way companies address bad releases is when people call them out and shine a light on it! This is a POSITIVE video. 🤙🏼⚡⚡🤙🏼

Totally taking The Inglorious Basterds to the grave, it's not that bad. T2 is far more egregious lol. I love these videos. Totally agree with you on the Criterion edition I personally hate the digibook/fold out weird slip things in general. I ended up getting Mulholland Drive and Uncut Gems from them. While not as bad, I still would rather have a standard Criterion case with a nice slipbox similar to the Scream Factory Halloween releases. Totally agree with you on the Indiana Jones set. Total missed opportunity. Universal did the same packaging for BTTF. With BTTF I did like the steelbooks better, but I totally agree with you on hiring a real artist for these really expensive Steelbook sets. They could have commissioned Drew Struzan to do something nice. The only people killing it right now with sweet steelbook packaging from the majors is Lionsgate. AND they come with awesome protective slipcovers, instead of just a standard J-card. As a steelbook fan, and an incredible artwork fan, all the majors are really slacking. All the boutique labels just about are doing it right as far as packaging goes. Arrow, Kino, and Blue Underground are doing an amazing job. Arrow really always has. Really looking forward to Robocop and Werewolf in London especially! Keep up the good work Jeff. Thanks for being our voice in the physical media/collectors game. Much love!
Yeah, don't think Inglorious Bastards is that bad but we were expecting something better as we don't see Tarantinl movies coming out in 4k. Disappointing...
@@adriannn3720 I don't think LOTR is a bad transfer. Some DNR but still a pretty solid 4k with better colour timing (not that uggly yellow that blu rays has)
Inglorious Basterds is a good release. It wasn't a letdown at all to me. The 4K release has much better detail and color grading than the blu-ray. I'm very happy with my 4k copy!!
@@djsoulfilter I didn't bought the old blu ray so 4k is good for me although I see just an average 4k, not great. Still waiting for anything as good as 2001 o Blade Runner 2049, for me the TOP 4k releases I have.
I'm glad you highlighted the Indiana Jones steelbook set, it's so fugly. The regular 4K set has better cover art but the construction of that set is so flimsy. Once I got that set, I pulled out the discs and swapped them into the OG Blu-ray set, which is a WAAYYYY better box set
Can we just appreciate that we are still able to discuss physical media? With all the streaming focus, we physical media types are going to be our own cult following, lol. Good or bad, thank you for the video!
I agree. There’s something about getting your hands on something physically that makes it feel special. I’ve never been one for streaming, it just seems lazy to me.
@@kaibricturner8836 I also won’t argue that streaming isn’t convenient, because it is, but at a cost. I personally feel that the audio quality greatly suffers (or will vary depening on your connection speed) as well as no special features to watch. Plus, I like the box art. Again, I realize that people like us who collect and prefer pysical media are a dwindling bunch.
@Chenyu Fan I hear you. I just picked up the new release of 007’s No Time To Die on Blu Ray and DVD from Target and it is the Target Edition and it is glorious! 😁😁😁😁
Ive been streaming content for the last 8 or so years, and while streaming is still my primary source for entertainment (just considering the price for how much you get access to with streaming services) This year i finally broke down and upgraded my set up: got a new 4k hdr qled, a new klipsh sound system and a ps5 so i decided to start getting into collecting 4k physical media and yall... im HOOKED lol its so fun building a collection and the audio quality on 4k blu rays is so much better than streaming. So far i have the harry potter collection, detective pikachu, spider man far from home, and crimes of grindlewald (hdr looks SOO good on that disc) and the next discs i want to get are spiderman homecoming, the blade runners, knives out and dune!
Just discovered your channel and only watched a few of your videos, but I love what you’re doing and I gotta say that it’s a huge disappointment to hear that about the Middle Earth set. At a minimum, they could have at least included the appendices for both trilogies.
Thanks for this. I was considering the Star Trek 4K set, but not anymore. Another reason is that Paramount is going to release a 4K Director's Cut of The Motion Picture, but it is not included in this set.
Paramount will probably release a set with the TMP Director's Cut, Part 5, Part 6, and Generations, but if you want Part 2-4, you will need to buy this current set.
they’re working on a new Indiana Jones movie in production right now and when that gets released to theaters after that they’re going to release another 4k set
I think you're mistaken about the Road Warrior audio issues. As I understand it, the Atmos version contains altered bits, a few removed or replaced sounds that sound wrong to people who know the film by heart. But the real issue is that the audio menu option claims that the original audio is included in the non-atmos versions and it's not. All the versions of the audio contain only the new atmos version. There is nothing wrong with the downsample, though. The problem is that it is altered. Yes, it is a bummer that they didn't include the original audio, as advertised, but the discs are still on my local store shelves and I doubt that most fans will know the difference. This is all old hat to Star Wars fans, except here you can listen to the original audio on the included Blu-Ray.
Agree there is also the generic issue with Atmos that quite often the new mix is compressed and less dynamic than previous mixes in DD or DTS - just another example of general ignorance around these issues by the people employed to remix soundtracks - or auto AI processes which don't even have human ears in the chain.
oh good to know! thank you for the clarification because I was super bummed when he pulled that up because I've been wanting to grab that! I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on it.
What are the major differences in the audio compared to the original? Because I have the whole trilogy on blu-ray as separate discs. And that would be horrible if they altered things like Star Wars.
@@DelcoAirsoft I read that some engine noises are altered and a dog yelp was removed. It seems like there would be a video analysis of the differences, if they were significant, but I haven't seen any video comparison yet.
@@kentoad8948 Interesting. Yea hopefully they are not large enough changes that they are overly obvious. But honestly I feel like most people wouldn’t care enough about this movie. Which is a shame.
I'm a Star Trek fan, so I went ahead and bought the 4 movies. Paramount lost money with Star Trek Next Generation on blu-ray when people were waiting on a complete set instead of the initial individual seasons. Because of that, Paramount nixed DS9 on BD. There might be less chance of that with the movies, but I still wanted to support the physical media to make sure Paramount will continue to work on all the movies (and I'll then buy those movies: looking forward to seeing Motion Picture Director's Cut in 4K).
@@rb6725 Fans have been trying for years. There is a petition for it. The battle is the way the production shot all the footage on panavision camer film then transferred the footage to video to keep VFX time and production time down. Results were very clear in the effects from seasons 4,5,6 and 7 with what they could achieve. However over half the episodes and effects are trapped in a 480i container so would need remaking from scratch effects and unlike TNG all the original live action footage would need to be found from the masters and is a massive effort. Think TNG cost $30m to restore, remix and remaster all 174 episodes and they never saw a return. Ds9 would cost more and the market has shrunk further for physical and TNG was the test ground being the most "financially viable" of that era of star trek. Its sad but... the fans are trying. There's test footage on you tube for DS9 in HD I'm sure. But it's been a while since I checked
@@jefffan171 - I still think that Viacom is now going to use one of the new sophisticated AI computerized upscaling routines (Deep Image, perhaps?) to get both DS9 and Voyager to HD. I think it will happen at some point in 2022 and debut exclusively on Paramount+.
@@lovetheblue6659 Well that should help generate some much needed subs. As I doubt Discovery and Picard can pull the numbers needed alone for them to turn a profit. Don't think we'll see P+ till March 22 anyways??? Oh well

Ya that was super disappointing. I’m super happy I bought the regular steelbook version. It looks awesome. Funny I thought maybe I should hold out for this “ultimate collectors edition” they were talking about. Haha nope. It’s just a cash grab to sucker in the LOTR superfans that need to buy everything they put out.
@@chrisd6736 the superfans couldn't even tell the images had dated badly and required an up date. Is it really a cash grab or do you deserve one? They understand the market. Maybe you're out of your depth with this.
My "worst box set" is the Zack Snyder trilogy. The box itself is clunky. No digital codes for Man of Steel or Batman V Superman, the set is missing the bonus features discs from the first two and buying these 3 separately is significantly cheaper than buying this set
I totally agree on Citizen Kane regarding how annoying the replacement disc process is, but I like the packaging quite a bit (although full disclosure I have the three disc standard blu ray, not the 4K, so I don't have the issue with being unable to remove the disc). The Wong Kar Wai set has folding artwork too, I like them both quite a bit, it creates a ritual as part of the process.
That Indiana Jones set highlights the paradox of popular movies getting physical releases. Because they know it will sell, they can cut corners to increase their profit margins.
Great I just bought Beyond Thunderdome hope it's not the bad copy. How do you go about getting a replacement from them once they put it out? guess I could just send it back to Amazon....I was also disappointed in the audio on Labyrinth, way too front heavy.
I watched Inglourious yesterday and it is a very good 4K transfer. This is my viewing experience only and others may have very different results due to different set-up and preference. I watched on a Sony native 4k projector with a 1.5 gain 120inch screen and Panasonic HDR optimizer on with standard setting. The image is noticeably sharper and brighter than the 1080p bluray. However I wouldnt tell another to buy or avoid simply based on my viewing experience unless I know that person has the same preference and set-up as I do.
This guy must of been drunk or high when he watched the Bastards. I thought it was one of the greatest 4k transfer of all time. It smokes the bluray. I'm watching it on Sony A8H and a OPPO 203.
The transfer is great, dude is an idiot. His sale price argument is absurd, too. Tons of 4k titles had huge discounts for the holiday. Nothing weird about that.
The main issue He had with the Film was on account it still used an Old Transfer and had the usual " Half of the Film scenes look better on the 4K and the other Half looked better on the BluRay" stance. But overall it's still a great Transfer but missing a few of the Modern Enhancement offered on New Transfers.
Inglorious looks and sounds amazing on my set up and the box set is awesome. The Indiana Jones set is absolutely pathetic!! They were selling that set for £45 on black friday! Still didn't pick one up! Indie deserved so much better
I’m sick of Paramount Blu-Ray box sets being made of flimsy cardboard rather than a stronger material. Hell even Disney (yes, Disney of all people) use a strong material for their box sets. The only box set where Paramount didn’t go for the flimsy cardboard was for the 4 Star Trek movies.
Thanks for this, it's very useful and informative. And wow, Terminator 2: they've been churning out re-releases of that since the DVD format. It's like they just don't care.
I love Inglorious on 4k and the packaging ain't that bad on Citizen Kane but to each their own I guess. T2 I haven't checked out yet but haven't met one single person who said it was a good transfer so I'll skip that one for sure.
The problem with 4K is always, you need to check all the Information about the Disc before you buy. Back in the day where only 1080p Blu-rays existed, you could just Go and buy. No Research needed.
Regarding Star Trek, the fact that only 4 of the films are included, is exactly why I didn’t pick it up. Also I didn’t care for the Indy steelbooks BUT it was better than having to pull the discs out of those cardboard flaps that tend to scratch the discs. BTW very cool and informative video. Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Great subject. Overall really love your videos especially the best UHDs. I love that you do it a few times a year coz it keeps me updated. Only negative is, I always have to fast forward 50+ seconds to get to the point
First off, I always enjoy your opinions and insights. I kind of wish you would have had two separate videos, one video for worst 4k UHDs audio & video, and one for worst packaging. I watched this video thinking "Ok he's going to go over the worst transfers of the year". Nope. Spent half the video talking about bad packaging on some of these releases. I personally don't care how the packaging is on the movies as long as the disc is secure and undamaged upon arrival. I know, probably minority here, but that's just me. I've never seen the Indian Jones movies, so when they announced it was coming to 4k, I was excited. I didn't care what the packaging looked like. I was thrilled to hear I could view this in the best way possible, on 4k. I was hoping to hear more about bad audio and video releases to avoid. Anyway, just an opinion comment from me. Always looking forward to the next video.
Disagree on Inglorious bastards. The movie had rich colors and Deep blacks, very detailed picture. Might be because I have an OLED, because I have seen numerous reviews dissing this movie. But it's one of the best I've seen.
I have a question Jeff I was given X-Men Dark Phoenix for Christmas in 4K and it has a white line going down on the right hand side of the TV picture never had this on any other 4K release is there a problem with this Disc, no line with the Blu-Ray. Thanks in advance with any help.
Why? If you put the extras on the 4K disc, that lowers the space available on the disc, which means the actual movie will have a lower bitrate. It may not be a huge hit, and you probably would not notice it, but as purists, I think we all want the highest quality possible. Putting the extras on the Blu-Ray makes sense, as it's going to be inferior to the 4K, anyway, so may as well put SF's there. I like what they did with Braveheart or 2001, where you are getting 3 discs, 1 for the 4K, 1 for the Blu, and an SF Blu.
Can you reply with the link of the mad max anthology disc replacement, had no idea of this issue as I only have watched the first one in the set so far.
Hi. Just subbed to you and looking at old vids. Zavvi have just released a special collectors edition of Inglorious Basterds - is it the same disc (its still Universal)?
@@JeffRauseo It’s a UK exclusive And has a solid magnet close box, 2 exclusive steelbooks with Metallic finish slip cases, collectors cards , cast poster, photo booklet, behind the scenes booklet, art cards, character cards and playing cards . Thankyou for this list - not only warnings aboout the transfers but the packaging as well. And am so relieved that I am not missing out on the LOTR 4K set - which makes me happy I have the Hobbit and LOTR trilogies on the the bare bones 4K releases. Looking forward for your top ten 4K release video👌✔✔
Completely disagree on Inglorious Basterds. I don’t know what you’re seeing, have the Steelbook and it looks great on my set up. The rest of your choices I agree on or understand.
I agree with you. This guy must of been on LSD, when he watched the Basterds. I think it's one of the greatest 4k transfers of all time. I watched it on a Sony A8H and OPPO 203. This guy loses all credibility with me. Maybe somebody paid him to trash the disc? Who knows. This disc was perfection. It smokes the bluray.
Hey Jeff, love the channel. Huge fan. Question, I picked up Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome ( one of my all time fave flicks ) do you know if it has any audio issues when each movie is picked up individually? Or just a box set issue? I’ve seen nothing but terrible reviews on Amazon about the Mad Max box set. Made sure to stay clear.
Jeff, you mentioned T2. Any chance you could do that review again, maybe compare the different versions. I have versions of it going back to VHS including two Blu-rays, original and remastered downscale from 4k blu-ray. Would like your take on which version should be the definitive version
There is no definitive version. They all have deficiencies. The most consistent looking is the 2015 Lionsgate Blu-ray with theatrical and the extended cut. Sure it's using the old HD telecine, but it has the least amount of DNR with some natural film grain. The mix is the same 5.1 EX Gary Rydstrom remix as most previous Blu-ray releases plus the abysmal 4k disc.
I appreciate your takes on all these & I'm new to the 4K game. I just ordered about $300 in 4K movies & wish I would've discovered your content sooner, ie T2. However, I stay away from the steel books due to wanting to pack as many classics as possible in my DVD hutch. And that's why I didn't go for the Indy steel book collection. Keep up the good reviews please!
On the topic of Kane packaging…you would hate how Criterion packaged the Wong Kar Wai set. Fantastic transfers all around but they did something similar with the folded packaging and it’s a nightmare to guide through it.
If you're in the guilds then it's standard contract language that the companies are required to solicit approval from the director and/or DP on a new physical media release. I strongly suspect IB was approved by Robert Richardson.
Inglorious I think looks good but it's not a huge jump. I'm definitely not going to say it's bad, it's just not a big jump from the Blu-ray. I do still think it's an upgrade though. How much of an upgrade is up to you and what you feel is worth the price. While I'd like to be blown away with each upgrade, some of these just aren't going to benefit a whole lot when the Blu-ray is already good. It's the older films or movies that get new scans are the ones I get excited for.
I am a massive film collector but live in a small apartment, so the first thing I do when I buy a new movie is throw all of the packaging and even most times the disc with the added extras (which I use as coffee coasters) in the trash and all my movies are cataloged and put into one of my Aluminium storages cases.. which live behind my sofa..
Do you have a Home Theater? I just found you forgive me if you do this, but I would love a Best / Worse Atmos / DTS:X video. I have been doing HT for 25 years and good atmos is the greatest thing since the junp to Dolby Digital
This was the most positive, negative video I've seen. It's fascinating to hear all the mistakes that unfortunately keep getting made in this format. But it's constructive to lay it all out and maybe call more attention to it. Video and sound are usually the first thing to get called out, but there's not enough attention given to things like packaging and design. Something like an awesome cover art can be the deciding factor for whether I upgrade a disc or not.
I am in the minority that I could give two craps less about packaging, protection, features. Just want the 4K disc and it to look and sound great. The more we want companies to pour a lot of time into a beautifully packaged and supported thing the less likely companies will want to do it.
I don’t understand your logic at all. Why would wanting companies to put more effort into the packaging make them less likely to want to do it? That makes zero sense. “The consumers seem to really like the great packaging, extras etc, let’s do less of that if we want to sell more discs…” It’s the opposite of supply and demand. Also wanting a great sounding and looking 4K and wanting nice packaging aren’t exclusive from each other. You can want both of those things at the same time. And the idea that pouring more resources into the packaging and presentation means taking away from the actual 4K disc is literal nonsense.
@@tommarshall9927 companies already don’t want to support 4K. Heavily invested in streaming so if people are demanding extra time be spent on adding all these fine details they will probably be less willing to do that since they want streaming
Road Warrior always had terrible audio issues. Especially in the big scene where Papagallo is explaining the breakout plan, his voice drops in and out constantly. Probably just shonky recording on a remote location in 1981.
I used to collect dvd’s and Blu-ray’s. Gave up on it just as 4K Blu-ray started. Done buying the same movies over and over just for better picture and sound quality.
I totally agree with the Indiana Jones Steel Book set, I pre-ordered it from Best Buy and was very disappointed with the art work and packaging when I got it!!! Love this idea for 10 worst categories! Great Channel!!!!
I’m surprised Kino’s 4K Silence of the Lambs didn’t make it as a worst. Not only was the first 20 minutes of the video screwed up; the audio was incorrect and, in contrast to Criterion and WB, Kino refused to do a replacement program and basically took a “Take it or leave it” stance.
I felt dumb when I went and bought the Lord Of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies in 4K, because I found out literally only a few days later that they were gonna do a compilation release later on, and felt I should have just held out and got that instead. Seems I made the right call after all with the individual trilogy releases. Thank you.
They're not the same thing. You need to get real. If It's different its different. A 1st edition is unique. They go to all the trouble to stamp these things as 1st edition and 2nd edition and 3rd edition etc.. They're not the same thing.
I've had to many issues with the disks being burned faulty. There seems to no way to return them for replacement. SUX I'm stuck with one bad disk in a collector set and a couple individual disks. Bummer!
Thanks for saving us a few bucks on garbage discs! To be honest I am still pretty happy with Mad Max on Blu ray. Garbage packaging on Citizen Kane! I absolutely fully endorse your Middle Earth pick! I was so disappointed in this, it is hard to even express it well. My favorite movie series ever. And this is supposed to be an ultimate collector’s set without all the extra content? Give me a break! I have all the previous DVD and Blu Ray sets. So this would do I suppose. But I am not gonna buy it, the half assed way they released it!
Whilst I haven't seen the 4k Terminator 2, I would think nothing could be worse than Gremlins 4k which I bought last week. Some parts of it is on a par with VHS quality. These companies should be ashamed of themselves.
Once I slid the discs out of the CITIZEN KANE box, I put the discs in slimline jewel cases. I do that with any disc, whether bluray, 4K or CD that comes in a cardboard sleeve.
I did get that ultimate collectors edition from lotr and the hobbit. €229. I do wished more special features were on it, but tbh for me it doesn't really matter as much. I never watch those things. I rather watch lotr and the hobbit a 2th time in 4K. And i love it. I like the box also, if for me there could have been 1 thing better, it would have been metal cases. I like the design, but metal would have nailed it. It stands next to my normal dvd's, extended dvd's, normal blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray (only hobbit trilogy), extended blu-ray box sets and fits the collection well. 4K looks stunning on these. I can't agree with your decision because of it, sure it might not be enough for you, but the 4k movies are amazing, the sound is amazing. You should have put this in the worst package instead of worst overall... Because it isn't the worst in everything.
While I can’t really agree with most of this stuff since my player doesn’t play 4K UHD Blu-Rays, I can agree on the Indiana Jones and Middle Earth box sets For Indy, I have the recent reissue of the Blu-Rays from I believe 2012, but I agree that the cardboard they used is flimsy as hell and they steelbooks themselves have rather weak artwork. And what really kills me is that I have the Star Trek: The Original Series steelbook set from October which, while it uses cardboard as well, the steelbooks there look great. And more…And beyond, while I can say that Paramount isn’t the best when it comes to steelbook artwork, they have proven themselves capable of doing good artwork, like with the John Hughes Too Cool For School Trilogy (Ferris Bueller, Pretty in Pink, and Some Kind of Wonderful) steelbooks they released around the same time as the Indiana Jones steelbooks, in addition to the Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Wolf of Wall Street steelbooks (the latter of which I don’t have). As for the Middle Earth box set, I don’t really care about extras and I rarely ever watch them as such, but I can understand hardcore fans getting angry about the lack of those appendices and behind the scenes discs. I recently picked up the 20th Anniversary released of the Extended Editions of the LotR films on Blu-Ray which has those 4K transfers on 1080p Blu-Ray in addition to the appendices and behind the scenes discs, so, the fact that they were willing to include those extras on a BLU-RAY release, but NOT a 4K release…is just insane, man
I personally find the critique on the Inglorious Basterds 4K absurd. It looks absolute fine to me, no issues and like I remembered it from the cinema (just better, obviously). I don't see it as tempered with but instead as the original digital intermediate with added HDR. I guess the Blu Ray image was tempered with much more. Mad Max II & III audio was also fine. Maybe not the original but you'd have to be a super fan to notice. Also everybody interested in physical media releases of Star Trek should buy the new set or who knows if there is going to be another one in the future. It is again fine for what it is.
But
@AlasdairGR Also they were shot in 2K with 4K scan. So it really worth upgrading to 4K here?
I still got the Lotr + Hobbit EE "Book-Version" with 2 Bonusdiscs each along the 4k. What isnt a cash crab today...
@@buddychrist I don't understand your point
No, the negative for that film definitely still exists.
I’m STILL salty about that “Ultimate” LOTR box set. I missed out on those nice steelbooks because I held out for this one. At least I still have the awesome Extended Edition Blu-Ray set that has all the bonus features.
Yea the steelbooks were way better
I think the LotR release in general is terrible. The DVD is better.

@@adriannn3720 I thought the 4k was great. I'd heard many good stuff. I feel _fooled_
Kane is coming from WB in the UK. WB has had the U.S. rights to the RKO library for years & expanded that to worldwide rights in 2016.

@@richellebrittain2127 your right I ordered it from Amazon UK. And I like the Studio Canal version of Mulholland Drive. But I wasn’t gonna double dip on that one too.
Yes but did you realize this movie has a curse on it.
I think it has a lot to do with the discs themselves. Because of the size of the movie there isn't a lot of space left for lots of special features.

He’s right about Indy. Indiana Jones is dirt, mud, vines, jungle, sweat. It’s filthy. Sterilised white is really odd as a choice.
Exactly my thoughts! You put it better than I did
Great stuff Jeff. As collectors we deserved much better Indians Jones and from Star Trek and Inglourious Basterds to name a few.
I'm glad you put that Indiana Jones set on there. In my opinion, there has never been a physical media release of those movies with good artwork and this new one is as bad or worse than the ones in the past. The disks are great but that packaging...
For the blu ray steels artwork they used the original poster art, unless that was just here in the UK?
@@lockey88 Raiders had a decent poster but the others were so-so. IMO
Their first release to DVD back in 2004 had excellent artwork

Much love!

Good point!
Have not gotten my hands on the discs themselves so have no opinion, but I remember his original review of that box set as being much more positive.
100% this.
A remastered DS9 would be fantastic. Its much darker visually compared to TNG and a remaster would really look great.

@@dreyn7780- are you seriously defending this set? Why?
Digi paks need to be banned. What a terrible way to store a disc and booklet. I hate them so much.
My "worst box set" is the Zack Snyder trilogy. The box itself is clunky. No digital codes for Man of Steel or Batman V Superman, the set is missing the bonus features discs from the first two and buying these 3 separately is significantly cheaper than buying this set
I also heard that the Batman v Superman 4K disc is the old one with the messed up HDR, not the new Remastered disc.
The movies themselves don't help
I totally agree on Citizen Kane regarding how annoying the replacement disc process is, but I like the packaging quite a bit (although full disclosure I have the three disc standard blu ray, not the 4K, so I don't have the issue with being unable to remove the disc). The Wong Kar Wai set has folding artwork too, I like them both quite a bit, it creates a ritual as part of the process.
Great comment. Ritual is a big part of the fun of being a collector!
However I wouldnt tell another to buy or avoid simply based on my viewing experience unless I know that person has the same preference and set-up as I do.
personally I wasn't a big fan of my 4k blu ray of inglorious Bastards. I felt super off
This guy must of been drunk or high when he watched the Bastards.
Nothing weird about that.
dont assume my preferences bro this is current year
The main issue He had with the Film was on account it still used an Old Transfer and had the usual " Half of the Film scenes look better on the 4K and the other Half looked better on the BluRay" stance.
But overall it's still a great Transfer but missing a few of the Modern Enhancement offered on New Transfers.
Still disagree with Inglorious Basterds. Really not that bad at all. Let down, sure, but doesn't belong in the same conversation as T2 on 4K.
That random shade on Adam Sandler! Haha love your stuff Jeff.
I agree on the Indy set, the art is boring. A box set with printed copies of maps and mini props would have been awesome.
The problem with 4K is always, you need to check all the Information about the Disc before you buy. Back in the day where only 1080p Blu-rays existed, you could just Go and buy. No Research needed.
Not really true. It’s basically the same. There have always been errors and bad transfers and the like.
I really would like to start seeing all Extras on the 4k disc and the removal of the blu-rays entirely from 4k releases.

What link did you email WARNER BROS about replacement ROAD WARRRIOR & BEYOUND THUNDERDOME 4K discs?
I have to admit that I love that packaging for Citizen Kane. I absolutely need it!!! 😍😍
If you're in the guilds then it's standard contract language that the companies are required to solicit approval from the director and/or DP on a new physical media release. I strongly suspect IB was approved by Robert Richardson.
I agree with you on the middle earth collection. I have both the 4k and blu ray sets just for the special features.
I enjoy the upgrade and consider it the 4K best buy of the year at $9.99.
Just out of curiosity, how was the audio and video of the LoTR/Hobbit set?
Do you have a Home Theater? I just found you forgive me if you do this, but I would love a Best / Worse Atmos / DTS:X video. I have been doing HT for 25 years and good atmos is the greatest thing since the junp to Dolby Digital
Thanks man!!! Always looking forward to new content!!!
@@KyleCollective that’s not how it works at all
Road Warrior always had terrible audio issues. Especially in the big scene where Papagallo is explaining the breakout plan, his voice drops in and out constantly. Probably just shonky recording on a remote location in 1981.
Great consumer advice. I’ve also taken your advice and just got 5 of your Top Ten best 4K discs, thanks for your reviews and have a good Christmas.
hello, what you think about Goonies,Hocus Pocus and Top Gun quality in 4k? MERRY CHRISTMAS
All 4k releases should toss the blurays. I never got a vhs with every dvd release. £25 for each fil is robbery
Great Video. Thanks for putting this out, very helpful and informative. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
I’m just getting in to blue rays and 4K discs is there any very nice cheap ones??
I used to collect dvd’s and Blu-ray’s. Gave up on it just as 4K Blu-ray started. Done buying the same movies over and over just for better picture and sound quality.
I totally agree with the Indiana Jones Steel Book set, I pre-ordered it from Best Buy and was very disappointed with the art work and packaging when I got it!!! Love this idea for 10 worst categories! Great Channel!!!!
Indiana Jones is just fine.
Back in the day a fan could only buy a plastic cup.
I got the 4k Anthology Steelbook Of Mad Maxx 4 Movies From Zavvi..Will Those Be Good ??
@@dreyn7780 ? Are you sure that comment was meant for me?
I held out for the "ultimate" hobbit collection. Once I realized how lame it was, I bought the two 4K box sets on sale instead.
@@veronicareitherreese6671 that is what I am going for also.
@@DangerousDevilOfficial don't. The transfer is terrible.
@@adriannn3720 is it really? Dang it! How am I supposed to get a proper 4K of these films?
I love Lord of the Rings but that box set is too expensive for what it comes with. It's much cheaper to just get the trilogies separately.
While I can’t really agree with most of this stuff since my player doesn’t play 4K UHD Blu-Rays, I can agree on the Indiana Jones and Middle Earth box sets
For Indy, I have the recent reissue of the Blu-Rays from I believe 2012, but I agree that the cardboard they used is flimsy as hell and they steelbooks themselves have rather weak artwork.
Found this video and really enjoyed it. Very much refreshing and very informative
