I own a good laserdisc (yes!) copy of that film. If I were to buy the 4k, that you so highly recommended, I would be skipping over 2 iterations of the film: DVD and Blu-ray. Ha!
Very nice list Elliot! Tremors, Vertigo and 1917 really do look fantastic! I was wondering if you could do a video about your TV setup? So what tv, speakers and Blu-Ray/4K player you use?
Tenet is literally the only move I saw in 2020 in theatet. Me and 4 other strangers appreciated this movie all just as confused leaving the theater as we entered it. Thank you for all the suggestions! I have many added to my list now. Subscribed.
Elliot as soon as you have some spare cash do yourself a favour and get the Columbia Classics 4K set and watch it in preparation for the inevitable volume 2. The set is amazing and you won't regret! Don't get me wrong I'm not the world's biggest fan of Jerry Maguire or A League of Their Own. I would have preferred another 2 films from the 50s, 60s or 70s. However they are still good films and look absolutely fantastic in 4K. But regardless of those 2 films the other 4 bona fide classics make the set worth owning anyway. Agree with you on The Blues Brothers too. That's a guilty pleasure film from my childhood and I picked up that exact same release and am very very happy with it. Looks and sounds better than I've ever seen/heard it!
I got the Game of Thrones complete boxset for my birthday from my family :) The episode "The Long Night", which is really dark and hence terribly messed up by compression when streaming, looks so much better on disc. Besides that, I ordered 1917 a month ago but because it was the mediabook version, which seems to be sold out, they are still trying to find it somewhere. I really hope they will succeed
Interesting. I'm sure lower bit-rates when streaming wouldn't have helped 'The Long Night', but perhaps they also listened to all the complaints and tweaked it for the disc. They have removed the offending coffee cup and water bottle I presume? 😂
I had no problems hearing dialogue in tenet. I think people are constantly looking for ways to tear nolan down. I’m not a nolan fan by any means, but I would say this is one of his best, and the 4k visual and sound is amazing.
Good job in summarizing some of the best 4K releases of the year. For me, it was just as good of a year for Boxsets - Blu-Ray or 4K - as it was for the rise in popularity of the 4K format. My Top 10 4K Releases of 2020: 1. Dawn of the Dead - Second Sight 2. Lawrence of Arabia - Sony/Columbia 3. Vertigo - Universal 4. Breathless - Studio Canal UK Limited Collector's Edition 5. Crash - Arrow UK 6. Elephant Man - Studio Canal UK 7. King of New York - Arrow UK 8. Spartacus (Steelbook) - Universal 9. Psycho - Universal 10. Jaws - Universal Top Boxsets of 2020: 1. Columbia Classics 4K UHD Volume 1 - Sony/Columbia 2. Dawn of the Dead (4K) - Second Sight 3. The Cinema of Conflict: 4 Films by Krzyzstof Kieslowski (Blu-Ray) - Arrow UK 4. Alejandro Jodorowsky (Blu-Ray) - Arrow UK 5. Essential Fellini (Blu-Ray) - Criterion 6. Complete Agnes Varda (Blu-Ray) - Criterion 7. The Alfred Hitchcock Collection (4K) - Universal 8. Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits (Blu-Ray) - Criterion 9. Solid Metal Nightmares: The Films of Tsukamoto (Blu-Ray) - Arrow UK 10. Columbia Film Noir Volume 1 (Blu-Ray) - Indicator UK 11. Game of Thrones: Complete Series (4K) - Warner Bros. Doesn't even include the Back to the Future 4K Set, The Ladykillers (4K) from Studio Canal UK, Flash Gordon (4K) from Arrow UK, and the bevy of boxsets issued by Kino Lorber devoted to Hollywood's Golden Age of actors. And, lest we forget, the massive Friday the 13th set issued by Shout Factory, for horror aficionados! Great times to be a movie collector!
Thanks mate, just picked up a Panasonic OLED 65” with 4K player and Atmos sound bar with all the bells and whistles late 2020 and about to purchase a few discs to really enjoy all that 4K tech. Was thinking of picking up Blade Runner 2049, have you got this in your collection ? Any Sci Fi classics that you could recommend particularly with space scenes would really help me out. Cheers
Hi Elliot. Very good list and very informative. A 4k that I got this year that I like very much is Apocalypse Now. It's an amazing movie and the update to 4k is great.
Wrong, wrong and wrong. The 4 K of A N is another version of a multiple version product. That movie is 'living a life of its own'. It's reinvented every time it gets sold. When you say its amazing, we say which 1? Which pizza is amazing?
My top 4k movies are: - The Bourne Movie collection - James Bond - Maleficent (starring Angelina Jolie) - Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (starring Angelina Jolie) - Marvel series (Avengers, Ironman, etc.) - Disney - Fantastic Four series (with live Actors) - Disney - XMEN series - Aquaman (starring Jason Momoa) - Transformers series - Van Helsing - Lawrence of Arabia - Fury - Midway - The Magnificent Seven (with Denzel Washington) - Bumblebee - Hacksaw Ridge - Ford v Ferrari - Justice League - Shang-Chi - Old - Ready Player One My top 4k musicals are: - Mamma Mia 2 Here we go again - The Greatest Showman - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (with Emma Watson) - CINDERELLA (with Cate Blanchett, Lily James) - Lion King, The Feature - Sound of Music - Grease
Great list elliot! Yeah how bout Apocalypto on 4k? Its an all outdoor movie, colors galore, and talk about a movie that may well have invented in-home surround sound. Yeah Mel Gibson's Apocalypto needs a 4k release. Also No Country, Sunshine, and the Thing.
Excellent list Elliot! I finally recieved a 4K player for Christmas and am very happy to have a definitive list of some titles to look forward to getting. Cheers and happy New Year's, my friend!
Amazing list and a few I need to pick up at some point! Your number 1 pick hasn't even been on my radar, so was surprised to see it clinch the title. May 2021 bring us 4K discs of some of our favourite films 🤞 Happy New Year pal!
Elliot! It’s Mac!! This is a great list of movies on 4K! These are some great titles and I love them! 1917, Spartacus, etc are some of my favorites! Also, happy new year and am hoping your 2021 will be better!! 🎥🙌
Cool list. I ordered several and thanks for the mention of the blues brothers, one of my all time faves! Why don’t UK disc come with digital codes? All of the ones I ordered from your list come with codes in the US. Best.
Crash is my favorite movie. The Arrow release is almost perfect, but the omission of Cronenberg's audio commentary pulls it down a notch. The Criterion release has it, and no doubt hold the license on it. It's also worth noting, the transfer and mastering is available on German releases - I think they did the mastering in 4K, and then licensed it out to various labels.
Hey guy! Just stumbled across your channel and I'm a fan. I wondered, what is your (basic, or not) setup advice to get the best possible quality out of a 4K display? Do you leave the settings as is or do you tweak them? The only setting I've made adjusted to on mine is changing the colour temperature from Warm2 to Normal (Panasonic), but I wondered if you had any other advice to help get the most out of the capabilities of a 4K display.
I passthrough all video to the TV display as per the way my Oppo UHD-203 chipset processes it and turn off all the fancy "enhancing" features for cinema mode watching. For cable and streaming etc that's all fine but my Oppo has a superb video chip in it and I want to maximize it's ability to generate a beautifully warm and organic picture, which is far superior to what any TV algorithms will give you.
And Pitch Black too! Arrow had such an amazing year entering the 4K game. I could have included all of their 4K releases on this list. I can't wait to see what they have cooked up for 2021!
So just coming out of Christmas holiday I am wondering where are the holiday classics on 4K... A Christmas Story; Christmas Vacation; Elf... really need to get these done for 2021 i hope
Enjoyed watching this...really happy with 'Tremors' finally after a rough time in HD! Might go for the Hitchcock collection once they fix that track on new sets. Honourable mentions for me are 'King of New York' 4K and Top Gun 4K (apart from the invert shot...giving the bird! That looked daft).
You're obviously wrong brad. All of top pretty boy looks silly outside of 1985. It was obviously a glossy magazine for WOMEN on film. It's embarrassing in 2021.
Hi Elliot. Great 4K picks. War of the Worlds is one of my favorite Spielberg films also. 2020 was a challenging year but I must say that I added more physical media to my collection than any other year. My favorite 4Ks of the year or at least those that I picked up are Jaws, Apocalypse Now, Spectre, Full Metal Jacket, Total Recall and Spartacus. Happy New Year! 🎊
Great list! Most of my favourite 4K releases this year are included. My favourite 4K release this year has to be Vertigo. It is just perfect. Will definitely take your word for it and get Spartacus. Im a big Stanley Kubrick fan myself. Was planning to wait and see if they release a 4K Kubrick collection, but I guess it will take some time. A question for you. Do you think that Spartacus is a better 4K relase than 2001 A Space Odyssey, in terms of restoration quality? For me 2001 is overall the best 4K Title available, so Im curious if Spartacus tops it from your point of view?
Great top 10! Only thing I don’t agree with is Rear window - the blu ray looks a lot more natural. The 4k looked over saturated to me. Great content love all your videos.
Hello Elliot and thanks for this list. Just one suggestion...and it's not to do with individual films. It's about HDR. In the UK, the BRD does not tell us whether the HDR is '10' or 'DV'. In your summation of each disc, you just waxed lyrical about the quality of the HDR without telling us whether it was 10 or DV. I have the Sony x700 which unhappily does not automatically select the type of HDR present. (Panny does, I believe). So please remember this small but important detail on any other future reviews. Very many thanks.
Hi David, thanks for watching. This list was only meant to be a quick rundown of my favourite 4K discs of the year, not an in-depth review as such. But yes, I'll keep this in mind for future videos like this. Cheers!
The Ladykillers is a dream come true. I first saw the picture back in 1977 and fell in love with it but most North American home video releases have been mediocre to fair at best, at least to my eyes and ears. Thank you for the review and looking forward to this purchase👍
Thank you for this list, I'm adding a few titles to my Amazon wishlist as i slowly build up my 4k collection. Does anyone else use an Xbox for 4k viewing? I'm torn if it's worth buying a stand alone player for Dolby Vision/HDR 10+ to for the few films i have that support it.
Does anyone here know of how I can order an Arrow video from the UK? I've tried ordering directly from their website but apparently they won't ship to the US. I am specifically trying to order Crash 4K - so far to no avail..
This message is to Elliot Coen. I see that Criterion will be releasing their version of Crash on Blu-ray. I CAN pre-order that in the US. My question is which should I get - the Arrow 4K or the Criterion Blu-ray?? Realistically for me can only afford one of the two...

I’ve finally upgraded to 4K and I’m glad you included War of the worlds. I thought it was an excellent release, especially regarding the audio. I definitely need to get 1917, seems like it’s on a lot of top 10 lists.
Lord of the Rings was a huge disappointment, especially for the price. The noise reduction is horrendous, especially for slow scenic pans- it just wipes out detail. It's clearly upscaled from a lower resolution as well. I really hope Tremors gets a regular slipcover release at some point.
So ive seen Crash, years ago, and its a great watch. And i was ready to buy it on 4K, due to you mentioning it in this vid, But pulling up the 4k version on amazon it goes from $50-$100 (usd)?! Just buy the blueray version on amazon for like $28. Great video overall though, i just bought war of the worlds. cant wait to see it in 4k.
Got quite a few on this list but yet to see. Ladykillers only arrived December 30th from Zavvi UK. Watched the Psycho individual steelbook and Flash Gordon. Will probably treat myself to Crash (never seen it either).
Tenet is absolutely gorgeous and is visually perfect, I did have to put the audio up and down a lot though, like there's making a choice in the mix and then there's cutting from scenes that are extremely loud at the volume you've set it at and then not being able to hear any dialogue in scenes that are quite long and are just dialogue scenes because it's too quiet and as an artistic choice I think that's baffling because people couldn't even understand the plot and once you are straining to hear what people are saying and make it out you realise it's not complicated it's more or less a standard James Bond sort of plot but is really engaging because it's a bit inventive with its concept so it sets it apart a bit from those films.
I just upgraded to a 55’ TV with a 4K UHD player and even on a reference disk like Bladerunner 2049 up close I’ve noticed that each pixel from the disk is way bigger than 1 pixel from my TV which would indicate that these “4K” disk aren’t actually native 4K? For example viewing written text on my PS4 menu seems to provide the native 4K sharpness I was expecting from this new format. Is this because a 4K disc can only provide 100gb of information which isn’t actually enough space to provide a native 4K image for the entirety of a film? LOTR 4K was an absolute mixed bag with regards to image quality and I can understand and respect that older films will come up short but even in shots without visual effects I was less than impressed. Is this where 35mm falls short of 4K detail? Any answers are appreciated 🙏🏻
I agree, War of the Worlds is very under-rated and is one of my favorite Spielberg films, too. The 4K makes it even better. Even on my 5.1 system, the sound blew me away more than any prior releases.
NO. It's rated exactly what the community wanted to give it. If the community decides those 2 individuals are disgusting human beings then the community IS right to knock em down. Your gossip won't change public opinion. Don't think my pointing stuff out to you is my personal opinion. You're missing information and I just told you what the community knows.
I applaud Nolan/ Tenet for going all out with the IMAX scenes. MI Fallout was the clearest disk I had ever seen and Tenet has overtaken it! Sound levels were not that bad for me either! It was just annoying that as a viewer I had no idea which volume level to use at the start then the gunshot in scene one scared the crap out of me!
@@halexd3017 At the time, in 1980, I was disappointed in the movie for two reasons: the images were soft and blurry at the theater I saw it and I wasn't prepared for the heavy camp element. But now I love it!
Australia released the studiocanal Flash Gordon in its standard edition, which I bought and loved - then nearly 2 or 3 months later they decided to release the limited edition version with the poster, art cards, booklet, Life After Flash doc etc. So I caved and bought it again for that.. however it did not come in that glorious hard box you got in the UK, instead its this cheap cardboard box that opens up like a cereal box... a bit annoyed about that, but love the movie none the less.
Oh no, that's a shame about the packaging difference. I'm glad you enjoyed the 4K presentation of Flash Gordon. Thanks for all the support on the channel, Luke!
I don't believe in buying bad movies just because they're in 4K and "look great" and I don't mean so bad it's good because I own Tammy and the T Rex in 4K.
It's going to be down to your preferences really. I greatly enjoyed the film but a lot of people don't like it. I didn't just buy it for the 4K specs FYI - I'm a big fan of Ang Lee and his work, even this recent period of his career. I hope that helps!
I bought my copy from Germany because it included the 3d version of the film & was also a steelbook. Picture & sound quality were both excellent & like many others I also enjoyed the film too
I agree War of the Worlds is under-rated in the Spielberg cannon. I bought and saw the 4k disc before the Criterion release of the original. I grew up loving the original and still do but now having seen them both again this year I have to say I like Spielberg's version better.
I haven't watched it yet but I picked up Gemini Man strictly because of it being 60fps/4K. I'll watch it just for the spectacle. Even though I know it's controversial, I wish they would given the same treatment to the Hobbit Trilogy. I'm not a big war guy but I may have to give 1917 a try.
Holy shit dude is that your video collection on all those book cases. Damn I had one Ben hole unit full not 6. Jesus Christ. I ripped discs to hard drives and dumped them all. Then I went back to buying 4K and getting the digital copies
Nice list. Funnily enough I was watching Spartacus on 4K a few days ago. The transfer is amazing. Its probably my least favourite Kubrick film. To me the Kubrick release of the year was Full Metal Jacket (which had a very nice but under-rated transfer). The Jaws, Tremors and Flash Gordon 4k's were very nice to see, especially Flash Gordon, which has had a lot of bad luck with transfers in the past. I am one of the other people with a soft spot for Gemini Man. The 4K of this and Lee's earlier film Billy Lynn's Halftime walk were very interesting.
My favourite 4K release of the year was the Hitchcock box. It was so much fun to watch them and marvel at the detail and clarity of the films. I have always thought the Birds looked kinda bad but they pulled off some magic and made it look great. The film itself is the worst in the set in my opinion. Vertigo and Psycho are top notch.
the Hitchcock collection has issues with skipping discs (see amazon reviews) AND we all know 4k discs are horribly prone to scratching and this release has cardboard sleeve style slide in book type holders and from my own experience this type packaging is horrible for scratching discs.

Agree with you on The Blues Brothers too. That's a guilty pleasure film from my childhood and I picked up that exact same release and am very very happy with it. Looks and sounds better than I've ever seen/heard it!
I got the Game of Thrones complete boxset for my birthday from my family :)
The episode "The Long Night", which is really dark and hence terribly messed up by compression when streaming, looks so much better on disc.
Pretty Spot ON list. Good job Elliot. Looking forward to more of the Best Blu-ray reviews on the tube.
Thanks so much Chris!

Great times to be a movie collector!
Good for you
Thanks mate, just picked up a Panasonic OLED 65” with 4K player and Atmos sound bar with all the bells and whistles late 2020 and about to purchase a few discs to really enjoy all that 4K tech. Was thinking of picking up Blade Runner 2049, have you got this in your collection ? Any Sci Fi classics that you could recommend particularly with space scenes would really help me out. Cheers
Great review. Did the French classic thriller 'Le cercle rouge' go under your radar? This masterpiece has been remastered in 4K .
If I buy a movie 4K UHD on Amazon or fandango using my smart Tv is it the same quality as me buying the disc?
Hi Elliot. Very good list and very informative. A 4k that I got this year that I like very much is Apocalypse Now. It's an amazing movie and the update to 4k is great.
Hi Michael! Absolutely, the Apocalypse Now presentation in 4K is stunning. Thanks for watching!
Wrong, wrong and wrong.
The 4 K of A N is another version of a multiple version product.
That movie is 'living a life of its own'.
It's reinvented every time it gets sold.
When you say its amazing, we say which 1?
Which pizza is amazing?
Hello, I live in New York, please where can I buy physical digital media movies mixed in Auro 3D? Thanks
I really like your list! I watched Beetlejuice yesterday and was shocked at how clear it is!

I already know what would be the Number 1 of 2021, A Clockwork Orange
Yes Yes Yes! Here's hoping it shines as brightly as the other Kubrick discs we've had on 4K so far.
A clockwork orange is that movie you know is so good but you just can’t recommend to anyone lol.
Does anyone know how to submit something for the corrected disc for psycho? I didn't know they were sending out replacements.
No one mentions king of New York. That was an amazing job by arrow.
My mistake: I didn't realize Arrow released King of NY in 4K. I thought they'd only done three releases so far!
Yeah agree it was a great 4k disc with full screen
And Pitch Black too! Arrow had such an amazing year entering the 4K game. I could have included all of their 4K releases on this list. I can't wait to see what they have cooked up for 2021!
@@ElliotCoen good shout with Spartacus. It looks incredible. Nice to have a classic shot on film at no1.
@@ElliotCoen and let's not forget their amazing 4K release of Cinema Paradiso!
So just coming out of Christmas holiday I am wondering where are the holiday classics on 4K... A Christmas Story; Christmas Vacation; Elf... really need to get these done for 2021 i hope
Hi Neil. Yes I do hope we get more holiday films on 4K for the holiday season in 2021! Thanks for watching.
Wonderful video, beautifully presented as ever
Wow 12k views already. Great list. Gonna do my top releases this year also
Thanks so much mate! Looking forward to hearing your list
Great choices in there. Spartacus absolutely blew me away when I saw it. I had to pick my jaw up from the floor!! And it's 60 years old. Wow!!!
Thanks for watching, Brad! I didn't manage to get the Top Gun 4K disc but I'm hoping to see it this year.
You're obviously wrong brad.
All of top pretty boy looks silly outside of 1985.
It was obviously a glossy magazine for WOMEN on film.
It's embarrassing in 2021.
Great video. You've got yourself a new sub. 👏🏼👏🏼
Hi Dave. That is a great selection of films! I've loved seeing your collection grow in 2020. Here's to a great 2021. Happy New Year, my friend!
That's fair enough! The colours are very strong compared to previous releases so mileage may vary. Thanks for all of the support :)
My two favorites were Dawn of the Dead and Crash. Probably because I've waited so damn long for decent copies of both.
Both were very much worth the wait!
Nice list, always interesting to see what other people liked this year. People are sleeping on how good Parasite was in 4K
Thank You for introducing and reporting those great 4K discs to us.🎁🚀
My pleasure! Thanks for watching, Cyrus!
Thanks....some great recommendations! Also very well presented.
Thanks so much Lorne!
Very nice reviews.
Thanks so much!
I’ve ordered more than a dozen discs from Arrow UK and never had a problem with them refusing to ship to the US.
@@headlibrarian1996 For some reason I get sent back to the previous page when I click (review and pay). I tried sending them a message with (contact) with the same result.
Hi Elliot, what about 4 k The Shining, 4k Full Metal Jacket and 4k Goodfellas. Have a great 2021!
Are all 4K discs region free?
Yep
Hi Divyen! Yes, 4K discs are not region locked, so you can happily import releases from around the world. Cheers!
My favorite 4K blu ray discs are:
1. Joker
2. Parasite
3. The Dark Knight
4. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
5. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
How do I get that Dawn of the dead in the US?
I’ve finally upgraded to 4K and I’m glad you included War of the worlds. I thought it was an excellent release, especially regarding the audio. I definitely need to get 1917, seems like it’s on a lot of top 10 lists.
4K is only half of the product.
Have you heard of sound bars?
Home theatre?
If you thought W of the W was 'excellent' then you haven't seen much.
@@dreyn7780 what are you on about? Of course I have. Probably have 150 4K titles at home.
Spartacus is simply amazing as a 4K disc. Jaw dropping restoration.
Hitchcook Rear Window and Vertigo was amazing.
Ha! The first two you mentioned - Jaws and Tremors - I just ordered!
I’m surprised Joker is not on this list!
Such a great showing in Dolby Vision.
Joker was certainly a great disc too. I would have it included it on the list had the list been longer. 2020 was a great year for 4K!
"Tremendous" list Eliott! 😉👍
Haha, I like the word! Thank you for watching :)
Great list - I’d held off on the Hitchcock collection but this pushes it over the top for me.
I recently bought Flash Gordon and it is light years better than when I saw it in the theater waaaaay back in 1980. Phenomenal!
Of course.
You saw a 35mm theatrical print and the UHD is a 35mm negative 4k restoration.
@@halexd3017 At the time, in 1980, I was disappointed in the movie for two reasons: the images were soft and blurry at the theater I saw it and I wasn't prepared for the heavy camp element. But now I love it!
What about Bugsy (1991) in 4K? In FULL HD maybe??
I bought 4K tenet and 1917 now I jus need 4K tv lool
I have 4k tv and movies but no 4k player..
Why nobody put in their tops full metal jacket? , i think it was very clear the images at a close level of the shining and 2001
Australia released the studiocanal Flash Gordon in its standard edition, which I bought and loved - then nearly 2 or 3 months later they decided to release the limited edition version with the poster, art cards, booklet, Life After Flash doc etc.
@@ElliotCoen thanks for the continued great videos! Happy New Year!
Out of your top 10 I only have the following on 4K 1917
Same with me but I’ll be buying tenet soon.
they need to restore the movie TROY to 4k hd-ultra and I would buy this one.
Genuinely curious, with movies like Gemini Man, if its in 60 fps AND you max out motion settings, how would this affect the overall look?
Anyone have Gemini man? Is it really worth buying? Keep hearing hype about it
I don't believe in buying bad movies just because they're in 4K and "look great" and I don't mean so bad it's good because I own Tammy and the T Rex in 4K.
I'm not a big war guy but I may have to give 1917 a try.
funny i also bought crash on 4k having never seen it , waiting to receive mine , glad the quality is superb with no digital interference !
OMG! you sound exactly like jackfrags!
You sound almost exactly like JackFrags...
I do get that a lot, haha
I was thinking Samwell Tarley
Thanks for watching, mate! I'm glad to know a fellow fan of Ang Lee's recent films.
Question: can you turn HDR off?
The Shinning & The Joker are very high quality.
Your Top 10 4k list is so much better than Jeff at “Films at Home” Top 7 list🍻👍 Your night & day compared to Jeff on 4k picture & audio quality 🍾💪🏼
Is that JackFrags voice?
the Hitchcock collection has issues with skipping discs (see amazon reviews) AND we all know 4k discs are horribly prone to scratching and this release has cardboard sleeve style slide in book type holders and from my own experience this type packaging is horrible for scratching discs.
