LIMITED EDITIONS vs STANDARD Blu ray releases - Are limited edition WORTH THE MONEY ?

  • I’ve been considering whether it’s worth spending money on ALL of the new limited edition releases we’re getting recently.
I’m afraid I feel guilty that I’ve been buying things I don’t need or miss out.
I take a look if it’s truly worth paying the premium to have these titles as limited edition and figure out why I’m buying these things !
Do you collect the limited edition box sets ? Do you do it through collecting / fandom or just getting swept away with owning the premium editions ?
    Let’s discuss below…

For my husband and I, it totally comes down to the movie itself, the distributor, and the quality of the limited package contents. Firstly we ONLY buy any 4K or boutique that means something to one or both of us. Price of standard vs limited often dictates our decision and we don’t tend to consider mainline studios or HMV limited/exclusive releases as they’re usually just full of inconsequential tat with no visual upgrade. Discs should contain new transfers and extras, both digitally and physically, should be worthwhile that have been put together with thought and care. Resale value or so called bragging rights are not important.

👆🏼👆🏼 spot on ! This is what I’m trying to shift my mindset to. I’ve recently picked up a bunch of second sight releases as standard editions down to where my interest on the movie lies. Saved a lot of money and space doing it and I still have the content I’m really interested in. And I’ve stopped with the limited boutique (expensive) blind buys too. Far too often they were blind buys of the limited edition as that gear of missing out was strong and the hype across social media about a new limited release always swayed me… which is kinda dumb when I sit and think about it.

Some Blu-Ray movie releases have had mid, or less-than-mid, quality releases.
Young Guns, for example, had a Blu-Ray release years back in 2007 that was pretty mid to less-than-mid. It was just a slight improvement over the DVD.
Recently, Young Guns had a 4K release come out that was built from a new remaster of the movie, and not only has the movie in 4K quality but includes a new Blu-Ray that features this newer remaster in 1080p quality. That alone has a markedly higher quality over the one from 2007.
And on top of that, we had Young Guns II release on Blu-Ray finally a couple of years ago.
Otherwise, I would only recommend a limited edition or boutique/label release over a standard one if the Blu-Ray is much better and perhaps includes a good slew of extras to show the love and labor put into the movie.

@@DeanTheLaughingMann you’re right. I think with the re releases we need to take a closer look at what the new package offers. The care and attention to a new presentation of the movie or some in depth extras would be the stronger reasons for me to jump at a re release now. Don’t need those art cards or posters !

    • @modestyblaise4167

@@DeanTheLaughingMann As I touched on, it’s the new transfers that are the key. A general rule of thumb is that those old ~2007 releases use a HD masters made for DVD. The technology and methods used were minimal and antiquated. If we take the so called HMV Premium releases, for example, some contain the same old discs and others contain brand new transfers on the U.S. Warner Archives label or the Paramount releases from 2020 onwards. They’re substantially improved in every way and totally worth upgrading to. 4K UHD or new 4K transfers on Blu-ray are the ones to own in my opinion. Packaging should never be the deciding factor, but if the film is loved and the transfer definitive, why not have a nice package with worthwhile supplements.

I hear you man, there's limited money and almost limitless releases. I never buy 4k upgrades of blus I own, and focus instead on new titles. I just got Criterions After Hours, and cancelled a 4k blu double dip to do it. And the Ulysses cut is an exceptional curio.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL

I’ve tried to switch up my mindset recently and consider how much the movie means to me rather than getting swept up in that new announcement hype.
It’s a struggle at times but once that hype has died down, usually my interest has too.
I’ve found that instead of hitting add to basket and order. Just adding to the amazon wishlist instead has slowed me down.
I’ve actually taken to selling a portion of my collection. More considering if they’re worth a revisit in the future rather than if they look nice on the shelf.
And we all know space is a premium as our collections grow.

I think bonus content & art style of box are some of the biggest considerations. Also consider display quality on your TV! Resolution isn’t everything, color correction & deinterlacing can be more important & properly upscaling to a modern display is half of what these releases do for us as viewers.
I’d say only buy your favorite movies in the “special” set version. Don’t worry about special editions until they release titles that punch you right in the heart! This same thing can happen with video games.
Sometimes the shopping & FOMO is as much fun as enjoying the content, and then you look back at a collection you only feel so-so about it, instead of looking at your collection and being genuinely proud of the money spent and excitement to enjoying it a piece at a time.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL

I’d been buying the limited editions for the sake of it. Massively pulling back to do what you’re saying either only going for those that truly hit me.
Bonus content is the biggest consideration for me. Not as bothered about the artwork on the box. I’m of the mind set now that if I like the art then I’d rather buy a print and properly display it…
Although I have saved some laser disc for the artwork. Some are in frames ready for the walls.

I’ve seen so many drop rapidly in price and then the realisation that I don’t use anything beyond the disc in the limited packaging.
It all compounded and made me stop and actually think why I wanted the limited edition… I was mostly riding on the hype and excitement from others.
Of course, there have been titles that have been some of my favourite movies… for those I’ve made sure to get the limited edition movies. Anything else now, I’m kinda happy with the standard release.

I don't usually bother with special editions anymore but I theoretically still would go for it for many films if a CD soundtrack was included since I still listen to music on CD. (I've never even touched Spotify.)
As far as I can remember, the only DVDs I ever bought with an included CD soundtrack were all Japanese anime.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  7 месяцев назад +1

No, I’ve taken a step back and really considered what was important to me about the release. It isn’t the extra art cards / poster or booklets. It’s the content on the disc.
I’ve been swept away with the fear of missing out or wanting to show of that I have the boxed edition of various titles. I’ve not ‘needed’ most of these releases in a limited edition variation. The standard edition works just fine for what I need.
If it’s a movie I love then I do tend to swing towards the nicer presented limited boxes but I now seriously consider before I make that impulse purchase.
It’s al very well marketed to the collector community. It’s to a point that the fans create more hype for a release than the company putting them out.

You actually do get the Ulysses Cut on disc 2 on the standard edition.
Arrow seems to have messed up on these.
Disc 3 on the LE says "Limited Edition Exclusive" on the info on the back but when you look on the info on the back of the standard edition disc 2 is the same one called disc 3 on the LE. What gets left out on the standard edition is the disc called "disc 2 TV Cut" on the LE.

You got some good things to go at if you’re only just starting. One thing I would say, do a spot of research on which edition is best for you and make sure you buy for the right reasons.
I’ve felt pressured into buying things I perhaps shouldn’t have. It’s led me to a large collection that has a good chunk of films that I’m not bothered about watching again (some of them being limited edition which I paid a premium for).
And don’t be precious about titles that you’re not keen on, a trade in can make a dent in the cost of the next titles that you REALLY want.

I’ll make the odd blond but still too, nothing wrong with that but, I am no a little more considered with what I grab on a blind buy.
I’ve started using wallets too, not a huge number in wallets but it’s certainly helped with the space issue.
I’m trying to be more selective in general, it doesn’t always work but trying… trying to bring that mindset in that if I watch a movie and it isn’t one that I personally care for, that I move it on rather than it staying in the collection. Had so many that have sat gathering dust purely because I felt like I ‘needed’ to keep it just on the off chance that I may want to revisit it.

The answer to "why spend twice the price to get the limited edition over the standard edition?" is easy: because The Guest is awesome and deserves it! Also, I actually really love the soundtrack, so having the CD was nice. I'm spending over $100 on the stupid Umbrella Entertainment collectors edition of the Super Mario Bros. movie, which comes with not one but TWO books. Why? Well, why not? I think it's fine to buy limited editions of films you actually like. 100% if it’s a film you really like then the limited edition is the way to go. I think I’ve just grown a little tired of being sucked into buying the limited release of everything. It’s my own fault really but some of the titles I own in limited format… I either shouldn’t really own if it’s for myself or I only really need the standard release.

I do collect certain movies, such as Dawn of the Dead and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Even then, I don't buy every release of Dawn of the Dead. Partially that's because the limited edition sets are always imports and also because they're so expensive!
If I'm in a shop and I see a limited edition of a sci-fi or horror movie next to the regular version, I'll usually buy the limited edition version, because I'm very much into special effects.
I've seen some movies and TV series available on DVD, Blu-Ray and UHD, but it's been a movie I know I'll only watch on my second computer monitor, so I just buy it on DVD, because it's not worth spending the extra money on a higher definition version.

A great collection doesn’t need to be a great BIG collection.
There’s also the thing of who I’m collecting for. I used to think it was impressive having such a large collection. Think the realisation that when people actually visit that nobody really cares besides yourself… it’s kinda a wake up call that I need to collect just things for me and not think about how it might appear to others… that really don’t care too much. Possibly why I find so many groups that like to share their collections, when nobody close to you care that much… you gotta find someone to share it with.

I think Criterion do their editions nicely. They never push an edition of a movie as being limited and you don’t see any with over the top packaging.
The recent release from Radiance have also been nice in that respect.

I love the hard cardboard slip case editions that usually come with a book, poster, art cards etc. But, are they worth it? Probably not, but they do look nice and I can’t help myself. They DO look nice don’t they. Think it’s part of my back and forth around collecting the limited editions. For a movie I love, I really do enjoy getting that limited box set. But, more often than not I also get drawn into that path of getting other limited editions too, a lot to do around the ‘limited’ number and also the comments around how great someone else thinks it is.
I’m considering doing a video either me quitting social media for a while and seeing if it affects my want and need for particular releases. When I haven’t got that hype or those comments in my head for each announcement. You are not alone…😂😂😂 I have the exact same addiction. I could’ve made that video myself. You absolutely echoed every sentiment that I feel. I am exactly in the same position as you. I have 509 4K titles which I started collecting in 2021 at HMV and Zavvi in the 3 for £30 sales. This then moved to the 2 for £24 and then the 2 for £15 and then the limited editions and boxsets. I then started scouting eBay, Amazon, Amazon Italy, Amazon Germany, Amazon US, WowHD and started importing from abroad.
I currently have 17 limited edition Titles on pre order!!!
When I initially began to collect 4Ks, I said to myself I am not going over £10 for a title, I will only buy/collect something I would watch over and over without being bored, I would only buy something that I could easily reach for and out on, and not have to be in the mood for, not have to think do I really want to watch that?!?!
I have not watched a single one of my purchased titles!!!! Every single one is still sealed. The standard titles I then began selling off and replacing with limited edition boxsets as they looked nicer. I will only ever look at the fluff probably once when I open the title for the first time 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️
I am in the throws of building, converting and completing my home cinema in my lounge…in the meantime I began collecting 4Ks which I could watch on completing the room, which quickly has become an uncontrollable addiction. They’re also not bothered if they miss out on titles at the point of release. ..so it’s time I kerbed the addiction and held off purchasing on initial release.
I also have a feeling I’ll most likely be selling of titles I purchased for the sake of them being “nice looking” limited editions, although I enjoyed the movie as well, but enough to buy the boxset, I don’t know…we’ll I do, I bought it as I was pulled in by the artwork/Steelbook/tat, but they’re not films I would watch again and again and again. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of titles that are keepers and connection with, but I do know there are quite a few that don’t belong in my collection, and especially at the price I paid for them.

There were also extra versions on the Bruce Lee box set. I saw that and I thought, I'm not paying 40 to 50 gbp for each of the 3 movies I want in the set. Now each movie is available for 22 gbp. That's a savings of almost 50%.
I have another story. I bought Night of the Living Dead 1990 when it first came out on Blu-ray from Twilight Time limited release. That release had horrible picture quality. It took another 2 releases before the picture quality was finally good enough.
Transfer quality is actually a big sticking point for me. Why should I waste my money on a poor transfer. Batman 1989 in 4k is an example of an annoying transfer. How the Grinch Stole Christmas 2000 - this transfer is so bad, I actually prefer the Blu-ray.
The point is that you are not likely to miss out on much if you don't get the limited edition. Movie studios and record labels always rerelease popular titles.

I’m currently holding off from picking up Miami Vice, fee sure there going to be a 4k release of it following the 88 Films blu ray version

    Buy whatever is cheapest.
"Special Releases" of a dying format is just a last money grab before its gone and they cant cream off anything more from them.
£75 i saw in your screengrab, i could go and get a random 75 blurays for £75 right now.
£1 each and thatd likely how much worth they will hare in future, or less.

It’s amazing what you can pick up older titles for now. Look at dvd. You can pretty much pick those up for free now.
It is nice that ‘some’ of these release are getting a new scan to improve picture quality but such a massive premium to have that in a special box is pure cash in.

      Yup and I had/have a lot of DVD's.
Having DVD's a couple decades old, that are unreadable now due to age/disc rot I don't trust I can store them and watch them in the far future.
2006 PS3 released so that's when my BluRays started, and that's creeping up on 2 decades for the ones in my collection that I bought at the time.
Prices have fallen through the floor, majority of people are giving them away or selling 10p a movie to the music magpie's etc. and tbh that's been going on for a long while.
Expensive discs are just a last-gasp cash grab before it's gone.
And since it's a rather niche market, resale won't be there. Limited supply of people interested in a half dozen copies of the same movie with tweaks of special features. Special features that tended to make It onto Utube (don't know if it's the same nowadays tbh).
My "I've gave up" is showing lol
Tbh any cheap BluRays are just direct replacing the DVD copies and it's dvd I started on

Erm is not the quality of the large boxset 4k which is 2160p, blu-ray is 1080p . Lately i am only buying to replace old dvds, soon i will get face/off, jan 29 Thelma and Louise, yesterday i got Trancers on 4k 2 discs region free, which is replacing a dvd, before that Blue Steel import blu-ray to replace my old dvd , and 6 weeks ago i bought Cliffhanger on Steelbook, again to replace a very old dvd, why people still buy them baffles me, when blu-ray is 1080 p, why settle for something inferior? Please do not say players are expensive because before the current crisis you could get a blu-ray player very cheap even refurbished, and then go to 4k later.

Oh it baffles me too that dvd still massively outsell Blu ray and 4k.
I’ll be with you on that Thelma and Louise Criterion release.
I do still have a few dvd knocking around but mainly when they’re just not available on any other format… why are we still waiting on so many. Panic room is crying out for a better release. (Thankfully Abyss and True Lies on the way soon 🙌🏼)
When rebuying it’s worth considering the reasons why. If it’s the re-release / repackaging of the same old disc then I’ll try to hold off… if there’s an upgrade in picture or extensive extras then it might be worth that pick up.

Unfortunately, yep. Have far too many still sealed. I think many collectors probably do too.
Sucked into an ordering habit with a fear of missing out on a limited release and realistically, just not enough time to enjoy them.
I’m currently sorting through the collection and making the decision which titles aren’t important enough for me to keep. Some will be going.
It’s been an addiction more than a hobby.
