Greetings from Finland. I had all but forgotten about this release (was excited about it when I heard about it back in the day). Went to the local hypermarket last sunday night and casually took a look at the movie section. And there they were: two copies of the 4K Hesitated a moment at the price, 29,90€ (I usually stick to discounted 4K movies) but went for it. A fellow movie nerd pulled the other copy within one minute, lol.

Good. I’m glad you’re not getting drawn into spending silly money. Its sh!tty you can’t get it but… there will be stock in a matter of weeks… and in a matter of months it’s gonna be even cheaper than the normal retail price. I got mine last week also, dissapointed to see with my own eyes that the complaints about the over processed waxy video were true. From what I have seen online so far, this release is seperating the 4K collectors into 2 camps - those that either want their movies to look as "clean" as possible with all grain removed and the picture smoothed out, or those that want the closest representation to the original look of the film. I fall into the 2nd group - I think the treatment these 3 Cameron releases have received are a dangerous precident for other filmmakers to follow. Going back and changing these movies to fit a certain asthetic is in my mind no different that colourising Black and White films - fine if people want them this way, but at least offer the original version also. they do it in every hobby. The board game wingspan was going for like 200.00 for a while just because people did not want to wait for more to be printed! Stonemire is super good and fast at getting more stock and keeping you informed but they just went crazy.
It never ceases to amaze me. The lengths that people will go to for something once they get swept away in that hype and build up. To be first / to have that one thing that lots seem to want. It’s incredible / fascinating and slightly scary at times seeing people get consumed in the machine.
Madness but I do get it. Used to happen to me when I used to collect Steel books. I will pick it up if you ever gets a UK release. But right now I have got far far too many to watch that has been sitting on my shelf for years☹️
Plenty of time to get to it. They won’t let it sell out. While it’s making money, they’ll still keep printing it. I don’t like the stress of it all, one of the reasons I pulled back from steelbooks too.
100% There was a lot of craziness about this release, most probably because of it not being released in the UK. As you mentioned people were paying up to £90 for a copy even days after release day from the US. Why?! I’d section myself if I spent that much on a standard special edition. Most probably because the listings had actual pictures of the set with slipcover which only fuels collectors needs to have it. I paid around £35 for my import as there are UK sellers importing in… a fair price considering it has to be shipped internationally. The set arrived and was exactly the same with slipcover. Don’t ’most’ brand new 4KS ship with them anyway?!
The £90+ is insanity. Literally a few weeks and it’s release across most of Europe too. If it’s selling, they’ll keep reprinting it. Just a matter of a little time. I think most new release 4k come with the slipcover. Like you say, a lot might be chasing after that but still… I’d perhaps give it a little more time before paying 4 times the actual retail value. I ordered mine through WowHD and besides a lack of communication it was fine.
I’ll keep an eye out on wowHD! I thought about paying for Aliens 4K also because of getting it before pre-sale. But then I had a word with myself, save myself 17quid and wait till it’s released in a matter of weeks! 😂
@@Officiallywilf honestly… I did the same. Holding steady at the moment though. It’ll be in HMV shortly AND my iTunes copy upgraded to the 4k already anyway 🤷🏼♂️ It’s those crazy collector impulses hitting hard !
I'm sitting tight for the French release date and, when it becomes available for import, I'll get it! I rarely watch films on the day of release any more than I read books the day they arrive. I've been known to have books sit on my shelf for ten years before I read them!
Same with some of my book too. Think you’re doing the right thing waiting on the French release… think Spain and Italy have it listed now for the end of April. No doubt France and Germany will soon follow. Sure saves a lot of stress being worried about not getting it if you can just wait it out a little.
@@PhillwithadoubleL True. Also, Amazon France frequently works out cheaper than buying from Amazon UK, even with delivery charges. I buy loads from there!
The stress is caused by tthe people itself. Just be patientt and have faith. If you orderded at a reliable source the order will eventually ship, sooner or later. If you cancel your order and order at another shop you have to wait longer maybe. The special thing aabout it is that it was till ays day not available earlier on this edium or even blu ray. The thing itself is a standard release. Only thing what is liimted is the slip. And that's why I ordered it much earlier then normal because I knew this would be popular. Same with True Lies.
Yeah I ordered pretty much as soon as it was listed from a supplier I’d used before. I was eager to get it but wasn’t going to let it consume me. Any problems… there will be options, it’s not going to be deleted.
Was it a limited edition ? Did you try Eureka direct ? If it’s sold that fast I’m sure they’ll do a more standard edition (without the o ring slipcover) pretty soon.
It was a limited edition. I preordered. The version I got was a limited run so once sold out that’s it. Maybe they will bring out a standard release without the slip and poster etc.
I can’t wait to watch it again. I’m not sucked in to all the chatter around grain and wax. If it’s a movie I want then I’ll grab it and see for myself… then possibly moan about it 😂
I got it eventually after Amazon US tried to cancel it as it was out of stock at their supplier. Now it's selling on the same site for over a hundred dollars.not sure if it will come back into stock or not. Watched it and very impressed with transfer and sound. The fantastic film.
Glad you got it ok in the end. Honestly can’t believe what it’s selling for. Considering selling mine and then getting myself another copy on a couple of weeks time.
@@PhillwithadoubleL id be careful there's something strange going on and remember this is Disney still not Sony.....yet. there does seem to be a genuine supply issue.

I’d love to see some of the scalpers get caught out.
I got mine on Monday from WowHD I was a little concerned with the lack of comma but was never really that stressed, however what did stress me out was removing that horrendous sticker off the slip cover prepare yourself it’s an absolute sod to get off 🙄 good points on the vid though don’t panic buy I saw some going on eBay for up to £60 absolute madness 😱
While I was making the video and looked at the sold prices. There were a number went for £60+ I’ve not attempted the sticker yet but head a couple of mentions about it. I might just leave it… or hope a hair dryer can help ease it off a little easier.
I thought about just getting the digital too. iTunes prices aren’t too bad. I’ve done it for a few titles on the US iTunes account and to me, generally they look really good. I know there me the arguments between digital and physical but for most, i struggle to see much of a difference.
I can only redeem the movies anywhere codes mate , Crazy people paying over the top for this film when it's available on amazon eu for may!! Hope you do a review on the film once you watch it, I think it looks amazing but I was already prepared for the Cameron "look"
I amazed myself by not pre-ordering this (or the other Camerons) as I reasoned, as you, it's not limited so if I've waited this long I won't stress waiting a little longer - probably until the *inevitable* Steelbook. The UK compred to a lot of other countries seems (to me) to be very easily whipped into a frenzy and panic at the drop of a media (or social media) hat... when some lorries were unable to get to petrol stations a while back it was massively publicised there was plenty of fuel available and stations wouldn't run out if everyone just bought at their normal rate... so of course everyone immediately started panic buying causing the petrol stations to run out, causing more panic buying etc., whereas on the continent, where French and German fuel outlets were affected in just the same way, the occupants of the country didn't panic buy and the blip was barely noticible and hardly affected anyone!
Yeah, I’ve not rushed to order True Lies or Aliens. I’m not getting stressed about collecting anymore. Especially with this titles. A little patience and they’ll be available for years to come. I remember the petrol crisis well. It was crazy. Also… the Covid toilet paper situation. How do things escalate that far that quickly in the uk ?!
I’ve not got around to ordering it yet, if there isn’t a stand alone blu-ray announcement on the horizon, I guess I’ll order in a German copy…….eventually and sell on the 4K copy as I only need the blu-ray element, nice one Phill👍😃👍
I think I’d have been ok with just a Blu ray to be honest. Got a little carried away with the hype and went for it. There’s going to be plenty of options for importing over time that’s for sure. Hope you get it… eventually !
I've been there and done that, not with these current Cameron releases tho. Blu Rays/4K's spend 99.9% of their lives on the shelf, although I do really want a copy of The Abyss and Aliens, I can wait, as I've said 'I've been there and done that' with so many other releases and some of those are still wrapped in plastic unopened and unwatched, so this time I'm gonna give it a while and see how the land lies...
I know that all too well. Even stone cold favourites still sat on my shelf still sealed. I’m trying to change the way I collect and the desperation to own. See the prices drop that rapidly now that I just want to try and wait a few out. See what happens with a sailboat and prices. A couple of limited edition I already waited out and picked up at around half the price a few months later. Still easily available.
@@PhillwithadoubleL The other thing is I sometimes want to give it a while inbetween watches, I have 'Duel' 4K Steelbook but I watched the DVD version last year so it's sitting on the shelf until I feel ready to watch it, same goes with American Werewolf in London, I got the 4K Box Set on sale, I paid only £14 for it and I've seen it online for over £70 but I watched my Blu Ray copy of it last Halloween...it might just sit there for a year or more but that one's still a bargain
Even though I own quite a few 4k the difference in quality for 4k isn't as stark for me as the difference from dvd SD to blu ray HD even with a great tv, I feel it definitely doesn't warrent the price increase imo. Obviously each to their own but that's my opinion
Same for me to be honest. I think if The Abyss had a remastered Blu ray without the 4k. I’d have been ok with that. I don’t think the difference is great enough between Blu and 4k for a lot of the re-releases. I’ve heard some rough reports on a lot of them.
Stress? Preorder day one, then cancelled thinking of going to my local Walmart and picking all three for sure. Don't have to tell you the outcome of the story.😂😂😂 I laugh because never saw it coming. Yeah, it's that stressful, then some. Received True Lies past Saturday.😅 Two more to arrive between April and May.
Jeez, had no idea stock in store was that bad too. Do you avoid digital or have you checked out the iTunes / VUDU digitals ? Think they’ve been available for quite some time.
It’s only an old Sony thing. I’m not sure of the model. It’s one that played 3D discs too. I got it from a place called MultiRegionMagic… I think there a link on one of my previous videos about multi region. It does multi region dvds no problem, for Blu ray you literally hit a button on the remote to change region of the machine.
I honestly couldn’t give a toss about that one - it was never favourite 😂 I’ll pick it up at some stage, once the hype has died down there will be loads of copies about. Got it on DVD it’ll do for another 6 months.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Exactly, it’s just FOMO. It is really stupid that in 2024 the BBFC feels the need to censor any film - it’s also inconsistent, I recently watched one of the most horrible (but good) films I’ve ever seen called “The Untold Story” from 88 films - the finale features an entire family including young children getting horribly butchered by the anti hero of the story - you are not telling me that passed uncut but a rat death didn’t 🐀 🙄
@@Dessan01 it’s amazing they will censor like that and yet surely they know how many folks will just import it now 🤷🏼♂️ I mean, use a disclaimer or something. No need for an outright ban.
I didn’t bother. Although it does make me laugh the amount of complaints about the picture quality, similar to True Lies in that it doesn’t look natural. There’s just no pleasing some people. I’m really in no hurry to get it, especially on import and like you say in the video, would I actually rush to watch it or would it just sit there unopened for god knows how long.
I don’t think a lot of people would admit to how long an item sits on a shelf unwatched. It’s more about the having than enjoying for a majority it seems. The picture quality complaints. Im sure there might be issues but I can’t help but think that a lot just jump on the bandwagon and use buzz words they’ve heard others use. My eyes aren’t the greatest. The picture will likely be fine for me (I hope)
This one was challenging but a must have. My copy arrived yesterday from a UK based seller on eBay for £48 (He must have made a fortune) I was watching a bid that reached £110, that's nuts. I haven't watched it yet but i'm looking forward to it, decided to keep my 2-Disc Special Edition DVD as it has a cool booklet and nice packaging. My question to you is how much did you pay for your copy?
Mine I think was around £28 - £30. I ordered from WowHD as soon as it went up for pre order. I usually pay PayPal so it’s all sorted and paid for so I don’t clearly remember exactly how much. I had a look through the eBay sold prices and was amazed at what some sold for. I don’t like the practice but I completely see why the scalpers do it. If they can buy for that £30 and sell at around £100 🤷🏼♂️ The only way to stop them is if folks stop buying from them at the inflated prices but… the desperation to own that ‘thing’ seems to outweigh common sense
I remember people buying this on Laserdisc. Then when it was released on DVD, people went back to the Laserdisc. Due to the cuts. Personally, I’ve never seen it and never will. I am not a James Cameron fan.
The internet is full of highly strung nerds with first world "problems" like this I'm afraid. Personally I don't like this film so have no need to circumvent the draconian UK censorship of this title. Also thumbs up to the director for refusing to heel to the jack boot👍😎
Highly strung seems about right. Admittedly some of the issues were caused by the retailers (from some posts I read about) but really not that much need for the craziness that ensued
Yes 🙌🏼 I do see a lot of creators relentlessly covering the same new releases in the same way. I don’t see the value in me trying to cover the same ground. Especially when I don’t have the keen eye for detail on a release that some others do.
Its hoarding behavior, I have it the movie is just as mediocre as when it was in the theatre. I can see if it’s a NEW release of a great movie (dune 2) but mostly its hoarding behavior. If it wasn’t collecting movies, people would be “collecting” empty takeout containers.
Absolutely it is hoarding behaviours. It’s something I’ve (and still do) struggled with for many years. I’m managing to reign it in but there are still some titles that see me slipping back to old behaviours. I think this release of The Abyss has gone a bit mental. It was always something I was going to pick up. I could have waited but this one kinda had me. Also, really looking forward to Dune part 2. Still not seen it but frickin loved the first.
I cancelled my order with Amazon US but managed to get a reasonably priced copy from a U.K. Ebay seller. Now that I have it, I wish I hadn’t bothered. I don’t like all the image smoothing.
I’ll glad there were a couple of eBay sellers that weren’t scalping too hard. Shame you’re not happy with the release, surely it’s gotta be better than that old dvd though ?!
I can't believe people pre order dvds for a ridiculous price when they can just wait till it gets released and it's much cheaper. doesn't make sense. look at American Sniper. holy crap.
I’ve started to hold back on quite a number of things. Became tiresome having releases still sat on the shelf sealed and seeing prices plummet in store and online. Literally throwing money away just to have that thing sat on the shelf.

It never ceases to amaze me. The lengths that people will go to for something once they get swept away in that hype and build up.
To be first / to have that one thing that lots seem to want.
It’s incredible / fascinating and slightly scary at times seeing people get consumed in the machine.
@@PhillwithadoubleL I hear you :) 99.9% of the time plenty of what ever do come up used a few months down the road!
It’ll be in HMV shortly AND my iTunes copy upgraded to the 4k already anyway 🤷🏼♂️
It’s those crazy collector impulses hitting hard !
Noticed how the Bouzereau doc has a record (4) retrospective time stamps: 2012, 2013, 2018, 2023 ?
I can't find the eureka release of She Shoots Straight anywhere. HMV and Amazon it's out of stock for many weeks now
Was it a limited edition ? Did you try Eureka direct ? If it’s sold that fast I’m sure they’ll do a more standard edition (without the o ring slipcover) pretty soon.
It was a limited edition. I preordered. The version I got was a limited run so once sold out that’s it. Maybe they will bring out a standard release without the slip and poster etc.
@@ChinaRising if it’s sold super well and the licence is still with them I find Eureka pretty good for issuing standard editions.
I dont care what anyone says. I cant wait to get my 4K copy
@@Paulaston77 yeah, don’t think I’d bother with the hassle of selling and rebuying anyway. I’m not in that game of profiteering.
I see why others do it for the quick cash. Just not something I’m into doing.
It’ll be interesting seeing the prices when it’s released across Europe and there’s the options of the imports from other places.
There were a number went for £60+
I’ve not attempted the sticker yet but head a couple of mentions about it. I might just leave it… or hope a hair dryer can help ease it off a little easier.
I managed to buy the digital code for £5. Looks absolutely stunning. This will do until my eu edition arrives in May.
I thought about just getting the digital too. iTunes prices aren’t too bad. I’ve done it for a few titles on the US iTunes account and to me, generally they look really good. I know there me the arguments between digital and physical but for most, i struggle to see much of a difference.
I can only redeem the movies anywhere codes mate ,
Crazy people paying over the top for this film when it's available on amazon eu for may!! Hope you do a review on the film once you watch it, I think it looks amazing but I was already prepared for the Cameron "look"
I've ordered it from Amazon ES, got to wait till May ffs. I think all the discs are the same and region unlocked?
Spain will be the same region as the UK so no problem there. Pretty sure the US Blu ray discs showed all regions too.
Not too long of a wait !
Biggest difference is the price tbh.
Buying BluRays for £1, il do that instead lol
@@johnnycarrotheid think that’s the way to go a lot of the time.
The Abyss was only on DVD officially
Pre-ordered as soon as it was available on Amzn; still no idea when it will ship, but probably late April...
From US Amazon ?
Guessing that demand was way beyond their stock levels. Bummer that you’ve still no idea.
Had mine last Saturday didn't even know there was a problem
The Facebook groups had been going wild. Quite amazing to see.
What kind of multi-region Blu-ray player do you have? Because I’m looking for one and can it also play multi-region DVD’s?
It’s only an old Sony thing. I’m not sure of the model. It’s one that played 3D discs too.
I got it from a place called MultiRegionMagic… I think there a link on one of my previous videos about multi region.
It does multi region dvds no problem, for Blu ray you literally hit a button on the remote to change region of the machine.
I honestly couldn’t give a toss about that one - it was never favourite 😂 I’ll pick it up at some stage, once the hype has died down there will be loads of copies about. Got it on DVD it’ll do for another 6 months.
Oh yeah. That price is only coming down from here. That hype is pushing this one to god status.
Grab it on Black Friday for like $10 !
@@Dessan01 it’s amazing they will censor like that and yet surely they know how many folks will just import it now 🤷🏼♂️
I mean, use a disclaimer or something.
If they can buy for that £30 and sell at around £100 🤷🏼♂️
The only way to stop them is if folks stop buying from them at the inflated prices but… the desperation to own that ‘thing’ seems to outweigh common sense
I remember people buying this on Laserdisc. Then when it was released on DVD, people went back to the Laserdisc. Due to the cuts.
Personally, I’ve never seen it and never will. I am not a James Cameron fan.
I’m amazed with the absolute trauma this has caused for some people.
I like the movie but… it seems to have gone way beyond that for some folks.
stress all due to uncertainty
Yup.
Obviously the title has been perhaps more popular than anticipated but the retailers really do need to get better with their comms.
Im hoping a limited edition does surface didn't get this upon release
Did you place another order Matt ?
Think amazon Spain are listing the basic version now.
I’ll put money on a Steelbook soon !
@@PhillwithadoubleL I'm happy to wait ☝️
The internet is full of highly strung nerds with first world "problems" like this I'm afraid. Personally I don't like this film so have no need to circumvent the draconian UK censorship of this title. Also thumbs up to the director for refusing to heel to the jack boot👍😎
Highly strung seems about right. Admittedly some of the issues were caused by the retailers (from some posts I read about) but really not that much need for the craziness that ensued
It caused insanity because content creators feel the need to one-up each on the same exact content. I do like your perspective though!
Will it have this cut
ruclips.net/video/pgtiE1e0HVs/видео.html
It has both the theatrical cut and the directors cut 👍🏼
I can't believe people pre order dvds for a ridiculous price when they can just wait till it gets released and it's much cheaper. doesn't make sense. look at American Sniper. holy crap.
I’ve started to hold back on quite a number of things. Became tiresome having releases still sat on the shelf sealed and seeing prices plummet in store and online. Literally throwing money away just to have that thing sat on the shelf.
Man have dvd there lol what waste of money film is one time watch .sell that crap man
I could make some money off eBay by the looks of things.
