I started buying physical media in 2009. I was in high school, no money, but every money I had I bought a movie. it all started at a local video store when I walked in and saw all those covers, I was literally in love. I couldn't only rent them, I wanted them for myself. When I regret it, I know the most expensive thing is going to the grocery store. The movies I buy last forever.
My hard rock and heavy metal cd collection is approaching 1500. I couldn't be happier! I admit the space is becoming limited, but at least I have access to music that can become rare or disappeared anytime in a possibly dystopian future. Cheers!
Exactly the same reason I’m going back to retro consoles. I’m starting an original Xbox collection, a 360 collection, an N64 collection, a Gamecube selection, and a huge movie collection including a wide variety of horrors, sci-fi series, anime etc. I’m also stockpiling enormous supplies of tinned red-meat & powdered eggs so they can’t force me to eat crickets!😉
A lot of folks I know spend their money on cigarettes, booze and fancy restaurants, I spend my money on cds and books, my choice and I couldn't care less what others think.
I’m not ashamed of my collection but I do get annoyed when people put in their 2 cents and say I’m wasting $$ and I should just stream. It doesn’t stop me but let me do what I want to do
Physical media is the only way to go. Just recently, I have heard that Sony is removing or blocking games that people have downloaded. The best reasoning I have heard Sony is giving is that people are paying for the license to use the media, but the people don't "own" the games they buy and download. Yes, that is games, but if this is true, they (and other companies) can very easily translate that over to music, videos, and even books. The only thing beneficial about digital media is the convenience, portability, and the potential to save space. On movies I buy, they all have digital codes on them, so I've got loads of digital media as well. I'll never go away from physical media. When they decide to take all the access away for digital media rights, or a person's internet is down, I'll still be able to listen to music, watch my movies and shows, and play games. That is an easy win for me. The digital thing just isn't for me considering how easily it can be taken away from people.
That’s collecting in every aspect, no matter what it is. But at the end of the day we all love it. Great video! Letting someone borrow a 4K that I recommended it being their first time is my favorite. Top Guns and others always blow their mind; most people at least have a PS5 or Xbox allowing them to try the format. Some people spend money on cars, purses, shoes, guns, golfing a mix of everything. We all have something!
Physical media is definitely the future for anyone wanting a deep, rich experience and learned family imo. That includes books too. I’ve amassed a small library of books, and disc media; DVDs, Blu-ray, 4K etc as well as a growing game collection across various consoles. I will *not* “own nothing and be happy”…
I started last year and and bought my first bluray last October and im close to 1200 films and shows now. 90 percent of my collection are used from kijiji, facebooke or thrift stores. Starting out i was able to buy others collection very cheap. Glad i got in when i did. Now i buy what i dont have and really want. Will continue to grow my collection. I still do streaming and there is still a place for it now. I only keep one streaming platform and change every few months now. I switched twice already and im happy with it.
I love collecting. With a family of 4 I lean more towards DVD because it's less expensive but also because I feel DVD might be a dying breed so I like to collect those although I do have a few blu-rays. If it was up to me I'd get rid of 75% of our streaming apps. Unfortunately my husband and youngest likes to stream more. My daughter and I lean more towards physical media. I love owning my favorite movies.
When I had my own apartment. Internet went from $50, 80, & then a 100, & between netflix & hbo max that was another $40. I ended up just canceling my subscriptions and internet. I've been living without home internet since october of 2022. I never bought into blu-rays when they first came out & now people are trying to ditch them to declutter their homes.
No regrets on collecting physical media. A concern about manufacturers refusing to make units like DVD/VHS players for Collectors. We might still have. precious memories on VHS or even DVD that we won't trust to 3rd parties to convert to digital or Blu Ray! If it gets wrecked accidentally by them, it's gone forever! BTW I'm into Classic Hollywood and any Pre Hayes CODE movies that look interesting, including silent films!
Thanks for the video man. It's nice to hear. For me ti's tough bc there aren't any people in my circle I can share stories and passions for movies. Nobody collects near me so yeah sometimes I get that regretful feeling.

Most of my 4k collection are franchise films. I started collecting blu-rays for movies like Fight Club that don't 4k release. I also started collecting blu-rays for tv shows if it's available.
You should feel pretty smart at this point. You own private property, while everyone else is that the mercy of some company or service to get what they want. I can watch virtually whatever I want with virtually not cost at all, while others are having to pay. My dvd/blu-ray collection is over 1,000+, and that's just movies and documentaries. When you include TV shows spanning from the 70s into the 2020s, you're talking about hundreds more. I couldn't be happier with my physical media. Everyone else can simply be shut out of their entertainment life under the right set of circumstances, and I can't be. I'll stick with that.
I started in 2020 during Covid lockdown just like you did. My first purchase was also a Scream Factory BluRay that sent me down a rabbit hole of hard copy collection. It was The Fog and The Howling Scream Queen Double Feature. And that was it. I’ve been hooked since. I also collect DJ tracks. But I don’t have as many hard copies as you do because I’ve had to be more frugal with my funds.
I've been very fortunate with sales and having a job that sends me physical media a lot. The Fog is amazing, it's so great, that I actually bought two copies of it on accident right when I started collecting!
Physical media is the only way to go, because if there is an outage or you can’t find it on streaming or it no longer exists to watch because they no longer stream it on tv,Netflix,Hulu,Amazon. Well you alone can watch what you want.
Why should anyone regret collecting whatever it is that tickles their fancies? Provided they're not letting it bury them alive or becoming unable to take care of themselves? When we lose power, or the internet (Some have satellite services), our back up generators and/or batteries from solar provide us (Mostly, for the kids), at least one movie time slot per evening, kinda like our personal 'Theater' where they can relax and enjoy. Try doing that with anything electronic-purchased, that demands you sign in to use. :-)

I've always been a horror gal so that is the vast majority of my collection but I do have some cool comedies and a nice Charles Bronson collection too. I love collecting. I don't regret having such a large collection. I don't regret buying the same title multiple times to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I *do* regret buying a bunch of titles that I had no personal connection with simply for the sake of collecting - especially big collector's sets with ridiculous amounts of swag that serves no purpose. But even there, about half the time, I end up changing my mind about it. For example, I bought that lavish Flash Gordon 4K edition from Arrow a couple of years ago. I had seen the movie a couple of times over the years and didn't really have a strong opinion on it either way - and I regretted spending so much money on that set almost immediately. But I decided that I was going to watch it at least once before selling it - and I ended up really enjoying it during that viewing for some reason. Guess I just needed to be in the right mindset.
Totally agree and relate to what your saying...and double dipping, that's just part of the fun I guess. Makes no sense owning the same movie more than once but its all about memories and giving us a slice of what we perhaps once had. It's our money and we know most of the collection is worth nothing value wise, but can you put a price on nostalgia and emotions. Plus then you also have the joy of sitting and watching the movies. Collecting physical media is a hobby at the end of the day like anything else. The ones who do it, get it...that's all that matters 🙂
I have about 800,900 Cds. About 300 albums. I have 140 still useable cassette tapes. I am dismayed be the computer people that have nothing. Stupidity is rampant these days.
I still collect physical media. Still love it. No regrets. I'm sure we all have our own self-imposed physical media rules. I know I do. Besides, if I own it, I get to control it.
@HunterBoldingVideo For me, I don't like to invest in physical media (typically a film on DVD) unless it's a film that I know I'll re-watch. So, if I catch a movie on TCM or on a free streaming service (like Tubi) and it's a movie I like enough to re-watch, then it will "earn a spot" in my video library. And then, I'll add it to my "purchase list." My go-to site for purchases is eBay because I like the auction/best offer options. Sometimes, they work out; other times, they don't. I will only purchase brand new, sealed DVD's/Blu-rays. Currently, my official individual film library contains 145 movies, plus 2 Marx Bros. collections. Another 40 or so Christmas movies. And a series of TV content (TV movies, complete series, etc.). My biggest concern is that content may be edited, restricted or perhaps even banned when it resides on a streaming service. But when you own it, you've got the whole thing, unedited! Keep physical media alive!
I agree w/you 100%. Frankly I have slowed down on my purchases myself. My last purchase/preorder was Drive 2011, 4K steelbook. Sony released it this year. Love the movie and with a killer sound track. I would like to recommend The Rental 2020 on Netflix from Shout factory w/Dan Stevens. Thank you for the video.
It seems kind of Hit or Miss when it comes to Amoeba, or Half Price Books. Both mailed me CDs with the blob marks on the data side. Either disc rot, or the CD got flexed.
Im overseas and just bought a handful of dvd bootlegs. Their perfect picture quality and got the new Napoleon movie...and the Jake Gyllenhall MMA fighter movie! Ill always continue buying dvds!
Yeah I've heard/read those views too. But it seems alien to me, how can you go from loving your hobby to being totally alienated from it? Like, right now, I'm not feeling buying retro Sega games. I've had been doing it weekly for 4 yeas straight and I want a break. I'm not selling a single one of the games I bought. Nope. They're shelved while I play the Nintendo Switch+5 Pokemon games I bought recently. And I'm still weeding my way through a couple of Genesis/Mega Drive RPGs. Zero regrets. Will not sell. This hobby is for me, that is: retro sega games, DVDs of movies/a series I want to own, or collectable type items, whatever. I love it. Even if I am taking a break from the buying side. It's all good. It's given me cash flow to go buy random Pokemon cards I think are cool looking and put them into binders!
Over 1000 movies on blu and 4k UHD disc and i dont have any fascination wuth slip covers or steel books and I dont sort them alphabetically or by release studio. I sort them by my love of them. Eg Top shelf greatness and below as you get to the floor. Its about what data is on the disc and how much i enjoy it.
I enjoy collecting. What I don't like is running out of space on displaying my collection. One thing I don't care about is most of the Vinegar Syndrome releases. Most of the movies don't deserve a blu-ray special boxset.
If they're not your thing, they're not your thing. I support them because of their efforts for film preservation, and they make releases that I really enjoy.
That's the best way to do it honestly. As someone who lacks space. I restarted to collect on 4k in 2019 after selling off my small dvd collection of 300 movies. I figure for the price of $100 just for internet, & $50 for netflix, hbo max, & disney+. I could put that $150 a month into movie / tv show collection. I'm taking my time and being more selective though so I don't accumulate too much until I get a permanent residence.
dont feel down because you like to collect dvds, ignore people who say phisical media collecting is bad, honstly i am doing it and am blowen away by the movies i have never found and watched. also love logging them in Letterboxd
@@HunterBoldingVideo yeah, I hate being "that guy"/ the spelling police but figured when folks scroll through the video library, you wouldn't want that to be the first thing they see 👍
I only have a few regrets when buying physical media. It was not that I got it or the price but it was the fact. That the ones that made the movie had no idea what they whore doing. I mean on one DVD the movie has beyond horrible audio problems. Seriously you can only hear like 20 percent of what anyone says in the entire movie. The other 80 percent forget it its like people whispering its barely Audible. If you didn't see their lips moving you wouldn't even know they whore talking at all. Its like that from start to finish the director never noticed an well that movie is garbage. Because of its audio issue then another one by the writer and director of Halloween 4. I had high hopes for that one but its is a huge letdown. I would not recommend it to anyone. Because it makes zero sense because it's supposed to be about a killer going on a killing spree. But it started like a p rn movie then it was about a witch then it was about a killer. Then there was a ghost that turned out to be the witches ghost that possess people. Then in the entire movie like only one person was killed. So yea I only regret having hope that people actually know how to make a movie. With good picture an audio an a solid story concept that makes sense. Have I spent alot on one piece of Physical media yeas but rarely. But when I do I make sure it's worth it like for a old television show that went on for like 20 years. That's alot of episodes it doesn't even list seasons it list the years. It also has the specials so that's alot so I happily paid like $80 for it.
Regretting?!!?! Hahahahaha hell no, I pity the fools who did away with it all. I look at people getting all excited about some supposedly great car they bought like....yawn, so what? A piece of metal/plastic that takes you from a to b which constantly costs you money. So let them look at me with my collections. I don't regret my 55 000 comics, 6500 dvd/blurays, 5500 cd's, 2000 games and 1500 books.....not a second's regret.
@@pep5158 like DVDs and Blueray discs last forever. LOL I have 2 backups for my main hard drives. I put the drive in my bag and take an entire library with me. How many DVDs can you pack when you go on a trip?
I feel bad for all the sorry people I know in real life who don’t collect physical media. You only have 1 life to live and to choose to watch low audio and video quality streaming is a disservice to your eyes and ears. Shameful and embarrassing 😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡
honestly, as a owner of more than 4k blurays, i cannot see the difference on quality between physical and streaming, id say that mostly the benefit is owning the movies
I emulate, I use flash carts, but nothing beats actually owning the game. Don't get me wrong, emulation is incredibly important for ease of use, and also preservation, especially these digital only games, but there's a place for physical too.

I love collecting DVD's. I have a movie club so I'm always in search of a great movie to feature at club meetings. Nothing like a great movie 🍿🥤🍫🎥
You get it, my friend. The monetary value of my collection means jack shit to me, because it's my memories.
I have about 800,900 Cds. About 300 albums. I have 140 still useable cassette tapes. I am dismayed be the computer people that have nothing. Stupidity is rampant these days.
woow thats an insane collaction, how many rooms do unhabe to store that ? are those still working after a couple of decades?
@@xavomansome of my CDs, vinyl, videogames, and DVDs are over 25 years old, and work just fine. It's called "being responsible".
people who dont have an interest in physical media are so frigging idiotic they have no taste. They have nothing.
I still collect physical media. Still love it. No regrets.
I'm sure we all have our own self-imposed physical media rules. I know I do.
Besides, if I own it, I get to control it.
Damn straight.
@HunterBoldingVideo
For me, I don't like to invest in physical media (typically a film on DVD) unless it's a film that I know I'll re-watch. So, if I catch a movie on TCM or on a free streaming service (like Tubi) and it's a movie I like enough to re-watch, then it will "earn a spot" in my video library. And then, I'll add it to my "purchase list."
My go-to site for purchases is eBay because I like the auction/best offer options.
I don’t feel bad for a single second for collecting my physical media. I love all of my movies! They are my babies and my pride and joy.
And you shouldn't! Be proud of that collection!
I found out Best Buy had a special person follow me around the store cause I was there so often buying movies. I never stole a thing in my life.
Now you can just buy online and not worry about being profiled
It seems kind of Hit or Miss when it comes to Amoeba, or Half Price Books. Both mailed me CDs with the blob marks on the data side. Either disc rot, or the CD got flexed.
A word to the wise, Don't listen to "THEY."
But THEY are so persuasive sometimes.
@@HunterBoldingVideo What happens when you die? Who will inherit your collection if anyone wants it at that point.
Im overseas and just bought a handful of dvd bootlegs. Their perfect picture quality and got the new Napoleon movie...and the Jake Gyllenhall MMA fighter movie! Ill always continue buying dvds!
If I lost my movies it would be losing part of myself
I have only a couple of things I’d maybe get rid of
They're telling me the same thing but I don't feel bad. They attack me like they're angry I own it.
Collecting is always the way to go it's not even close. No regrets.
Love it!
No. Don't live with regrets for anything. We are human. We are flawed. Enjoy life.
Fuck it all and fucking no regrets!
Hell yeah to that!
I pay $1 to $2 per movie from salvos couldn't be happier with my collection.
You overbought the blue ray, so then you bought the steel box blue ray combo after?
I got the 4K SteelBook from work through Scream Factory.
@@HunterBoldingVideo Okay thanks, makes much more sense lol
I feel no regret! #TeamPhysical
As you shouldn't, love that collection.
I can dig sorting it like that.
@@HunterBoldingVideo Yeah I mean who wants Terminator 3 next to Terminator 2 😜
I enjoy collecting. What I don't like is running out of space on displaying my collection. One thing I don't care about is most of the Vinegar Syndrome releases. Most of the movies don't deserve a blu-ray special boxset.
If they're not your thing, they're not your thing. I support them because of their efforts for film preservation, and they make releases that I really enjoy.
Just call it a physical archive. It's for "historical preservation."
It's called a library.
Collect physical contents of ur all time fav movies. Everything else u can borrow from local libraries and ripped them.
Sing it soul sista!!! 😅 jk.. well said sir! Thank you for that. My collection is growing!
Everything you said. I agree. Subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
People think I should just stream. Things get taken off streaming constantly so I’d rather have physical media, thanks.
Where do you get your shelves?
Prepac Triple Width Wall Storage on Amazon.
I have mine from A-Z and I have a few movies I regret buying i.e the viking on 4K
It’s only a waste if you buy stuff you don’t care about just to have it like some people do.
I'll have the last laugh when movies they enjoy go our of circulation in their streaming services and I can still watch my copy.
dont feel down because you like to collect dvds, ignore people who say phisical media collecting is bad, honstly i am doing it and am blowen away by the movies i have never found and watched. also love logging them in Letterboxd
Love it, Letterboxd is great!
Well shame on all of us Physical Media collectors!!
SHAME SHAME SHAME SHAME.
Most of those that are burnout about collecting are mostly unfocused collector that buy too many movies they don't really love. That's my opinion.
No one told him about the thumbnail?
What about it?
@HunterBoldingVideo in big bold yellow letters it says "SHOLULD". Unless that's how the kids spell "should" these days.
@@MrMice... Thank you for telling me, I missed that.
@@HunterBoldingVideo yeah, I hate being "that guy"/ the spelling police but figured when folks scroll through the video library, you wouldn't want that to be the first thing they see 👍
@@MrMice... I appreciate it a whole lot, was just one of those things when I was editing the picture, my brain just blocked out the extra letter. 🤣
When I hear killing spree.. I expect John Wick to appear out of the shadows.
I have never had anyone telling med collecting movies is dumb.
You'd be surprised how many people are saying that its stupid to collect physical movies.

Have you ever been in the middle of a movie you are streaming and have your internet cut out. That is why you need physical media.
I was showing my parents the latest Dungeons & Dragons movie and the stream kept having to stop to buffer, it was maddening.

You don’t need more ‘stuff’ you need more games. That’s why I use flash carts or mod my consoles. Plus I have more money for consoles.
I emulate, I use flash carts, but nothing beats actually owning the game. Don't get me wrong, emulation is incredibly important for ease of use, and also preservation, especially these digital only games, but there's a place for physical too.
I need permanent access and streaming and downloads do *not* provide that, no matter what people claim
