Resilience is a skill that can be learned, and I was watching a creator who totally embodies it, Laura Kampf, she’s such a great example of resilience.
When it comes to being more resilient a lot of people probably think that being more resilient means “Just try harder” “Suck it up” “Get over it” or “Just push through”. They think that the way to be more resilient, the way to overcome obstacles is to just force yourself to be motivated and keep going even if things aren’t working. And, while grit is a great characteristic, just forcing it can’t be your only tool. If you really want to be more resilient, you’ve got to have a toolbox of skills to rely upon when it all hits the fan.
So in this video you’ll learn 6 ways to be more resilient. And I’m going to give you lots of examples of how to be resilient from Laura’s channel. Let's get better at feeling.
Resilience means to bounce back. So for example, rubber is resilient. Resilience means getting back up just one time more than getting knocked down. I think some people think mental strength comes from just being super tough, super strong. But I would disagree. Ice is strong, but it’s not resilient. Resilience is a combination of toughness and flexibility.
It’s not just trying the same thing over and over again. It’s not just trying harder. It’s not just willpower. It’s trying something differently. So let's watch some an example of a resilient person:
00:00 Resilience is a skill that can be learned
01:09 What is resilience- Resilient people have 6 characteristics:
    02:06 1. A belief that everything is Figure-out-able
05:21 2. Resilient people ask for help
07:14 3. Resilient people build skills to tolerate emotions
09:39 4. They focus on what they can control
11:27 5. Flexible thinking is a sign of resilience
    13:55 6. Laughter and resilience

The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

My biggest pet peeve is everyone always saying “seek help from a professional.” That’s like saying “go to the moon.” Unless you have $200 to spend per hour of help, or even $100 or even $50, which takes many many sessions to really build a relationship with the counsellor and work on things, then it is not accessible. I am not ashamed or hiding a need for help. There is just no way to “seek professional help.”
Anyway I do get good information online and your videos are super helpful and all of these online videos and articles are a blessing. I just wanted to say that professional help is not an option for most people

Just like some others have said, I really needed this today. I'm 65 years old and I have cerebral palsy. The older I get the more difficult things become. I need to start working out again to strengthen all my muscles, especially my legs. I'm in a bit of a catch-22 because how do you strengthen your muscles when you feel you are too tired and weak to workout? After watching your video, I am determined to find a way to start again and build on my progress. Maybe isometric exercise is the best way for me to resume my workouts. Thanks again!

Loved your video. I'm following Laura on RUclips and this is exactly why she is an inspiration. After a series of terrible events in South America (robbery, no money, no passport, trauma etc) I learned first-hand that the worst thing you can do to yourself is declaring yourself a victim. It takes away all your power. There are always more possibilities than the can think of. Next lesson was that help is always nearby, IF we open our eyes to it. And if we're prepared to take on the task at hand. No use crying for help when your car is stuck, start pushing.

I watch Laura and I agree. I love that she doesn't give up and figures it out and always laughs even when she might want to cry.
This also made me wonder if I am resilient too because while I used to get depressed. I don't anymore. I thought I just grew up and decided to not give a flying .... Eff anymore. But I touched on at least three of those points. I'll have to check out your anxiety videos if you have any and send them to my daughter.

I’m stuck early on in this vid. So renovating a house you could afford to buy and alter to your liking is on par with wading through problems like war, racism, and poverty, which harm specific people on a global scale? I’m honestly not trying to be one-track minded, but the level of concerns certain people have are like a thorn in the eyeball to people with literal life and death issues to navigate- daily.

    • @munchkin0518
      @munchkin0518 Год назад +41

I agree. While Emma makes some excellent points about resilience that we can all learn from, the type of leisurely confidence that Laura exhibits is contingent on financial and emotional support systems, both past and present. It's clear that Laura has the funds and time to make an abundance of mistakes and replace damaged materials immediately. It probably helps that the process, however prolonged it gets, generates video content and more funds along the way. Not to say we shouldn't strive to build resilience as much as we can - but just be aware that not everyone can afford to be so indulgent of their own blunders in reality, and it may be difficult to undo the frustration that comes with "screwing up" that was hard-wired into many of us as children.

Laura uses free materials as often as possible or recycled ones and donated ones and often trades things for other items. She is not a wealthy woman young woman. Her income is from her RUclips Chanel but it is not without any cost to produce the segments. The maker life has a very different mindset and that mindset is to be resourceful
And resilience is a requirement of being resourceful and making do with what you can do. She recently lost her housing in a brutal winter and had to resort to building a shelter to use while working on her house. Her friends have helped by donating labor time but in tern she helps them. As she currently is homeless the rent money she was paying were then used for things such as insulation and roofing.

An interesting and helpful video. Although I think it's important to recognise our own limitations because we all have them. Becoming unwell with stress and depression can often be caused by not recognising or respecting these. We are generally not brought up to do so particularly at school. My life could have been so different if only I had known this.

You seem to have a glow to your skin and a sparkle in your eyes. You seem joyous. It's lovely to see, and I'm happy for you.
Resilience can help, it's true, but it's a cure-all. For example, if your brain is traumatized by a same-species predator, or a horrific car accident, or even seen a horiffic accident where people are killed, resilience is NOT going to be enough to help cure your PTSD because your brain is in charge of your locus of control, and PTSD is your brain with a severe glitch keeping it stuck in a trauma/threat loop from which it can't emerge.
Sometimes you need more than just "resilience" to get through things. Resilience is a great place to start, though, and building it is essential.

I liked the video. She seemed a really chill lady.
I've been naturally anxious since I was a child and my Mum was super anxious. Everytime my parents had a setback they would be so stressed out, like the opposite of this video.
I'm probably even worse than my parents as I have depression too. Tend to ignore my problems and accept poor living conditions and some abuse.
I do think a better video might be following an example of someone who is really depressed and shows resilience to get better. Going from where I am to where Laura is seems like a lot of steps and it might help to see someone starting at a little lower point?
I'm commenting though as I liked the video and hoping for more

I hear you. I've been in that deep, dark place too, where instead of being able to feel inspired by those with well developed coping skills, I've felt a terrible sense of shame & alienation.
But the seeds were planted.. by being exposed to those further along with their skills, who encouraged by their example.
It was something like a light in the darkness, which I gradually grew towards.
I've been a long time growing and strengthening, but I have emerged into the light and warmth after somehow keeping going through all the hard places.
The encouragement came from those who had found their place in the sun, and often after their own struggles.
So keep on keeping on, Polly, and whoever else reads & needs some hope at this time ~ keep growing and reaching for your time in the sun✨🌼
Love and blessings to you 💚🌱🌿☀️🌴

I appreciate your videos on mental health. I'm currently an intern getting my masters degree in counseling. I've shared your videos with several of my clients. I would just say. As a fellow therapist and former Mormon, I would really encourage you to examine your participation in the Mormon church. This organization has been on the wrong side of virtually every positive social change in history and they continue to actively work against the LGBTQIA community. The leaders are extremely dishonest about there finances as well as there history. I would just encourage you to examine if this organization really lines up with your values and who you are. Thank you again for the extremely helpful content.

Once you are an actual counselor, do you plan on calling out your clients on social media for beliefs that don't align with yours? I am going to hazard a guess that you would not. When you are a professional counselor, you know better.

Sounds like you’re in a hard spot. I am 60 with two dependent daughters. Things are tougher in many ways than when I was younger. And I get frustrated that life’s challenges never seem to stop. But I do find I have more wisdom & perspective on my side & that this helps to compensate for youthful energy. I rely a lot on dark humor just to keep laughing & try to find small ways to nurture myself every day - even a quiet moment with tea & toast & knitting or a hot shower. Cold showers give me an enormous boost as well. 😂 I want my girls to remember my example when they get to be my age - I hope it makes them smile. I hope you can find some comfort & inspiration somehow. 💗💗💗
