  • Barred owls (Strix varia) have a distinctive hooting call of 8-9 notes. It sounds like the owl is saying "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you all."

I've got a pair of them in the trees near my house. I can hear them calling back and forth. The rats and mice are getting active now that fall is here, and the owls have plenty to feast on. There's an old elm tree out front with a hollow in it. Screech owls and barred owls use it as a nest or lodging. They have everything that they could want. So, here they are. I've seen the whole life cycle, from single, to courting to mated pair, to building nests and then come the little owlets, cute as can be! It's fascinating and cute to watch them fledge under the protective eye of a nearby parent (the males do help with the rearing in some owl species), Then to see those babies grow and become adults, and hear them in chorus in the nighttime and just before dawn is lovely. Amazing and beautiful birds. Even though I'm technically "in the city", we have so many trees and so much wildlife, we are truly blessed.

So is anyone else using this to “talk” to a nearby owl?

Same. We have had them on our porch multiple times. Pairs, sometimes 4 or more near our house.

I'm in Tioga Co Pa. Birdwatching and heard this owl. Used this audio and it came right in and landed in front of me with Blue Jay's chasing it. We starred at each other for about 30 sec before he moved on. Really cool Owl. 5/26/24 7:00 am.
