Hera Almost Blown Off Nest! | Intense Storm.
On Friday, June 14 2024, the state of New Jersey experienced severe thunderstorms. Some parts of the state experienced heavy rain and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Hera, our resident nesting female osprey, felt some of the effects of the storm, so much so that she was almost blown right off the nest! Luckily for Hera and her recently hatched chicks, she was able to hang on and hunker down.

The pesky red-winged blackbird has returned, only this time he is going after Zeus! It's not uncommon to see red-winged blackbirds act this way, as they are territorial by nature. Although the visitor is being very bothersome, Zeus does a great job protecting the eggs! Zeus Brings a Plastic Bag to the Nest!
Просмотров 214Месяц назад
While working on their nest this season, Zeus brought a plastic bag to the nest to use as nesting material. Unfortunately in recent years, plastic has become a common nesting material for ospreys, as it looks similar to natural nesting material and collects in the same areas where they gather nest material. Plastic poses a threat to young osprey as it can lead to entanglement. Luckily for Zeus ...

Nothing Can Get in the Way of Hera Decorating the Nest...Not Even Zeus!
Просмотров 371Месяц назад
While Hera attempts to redecorate the nest, Zeus keeps getting in the way. Her solution? Continually drop a massive stick on him until he gets the not-so-subtle hint and moves out of the way (spoiler alert, he doesn't take the hint)! Ospreys in New Jersey primarily nest on human-made platforms. Nest building takes place in early April. Male ospreys usually fetch the nesting materials and female...

A great horned owl was spotted visiting Hera and Zeus's nest while they were away. It is likely that the owl was using the platform as a hunting perch. Wonderful news!
I'm in Tioga Co Pa. Birdwatching and heard this owl. Used this audio and it came right in and landed in front of me with Blue Jay's chasing it. We starred at each other for about 30 sec before he moved on. Really cool Owl. 5/26/24 7:00 am.
