Zeus Brings a Plastic Bag to the Nest!

  • While working on their nest this season, Zeus brought a plastic bag to the nest to use as nesting material. Unfortunately in recent years, plastic has become a common nesting material for ospreys, as it looks similar to natural nesting material and collects in the same areas where they gather nest material. Plastic poses a threat to young osprey as it can lead to entanglement. Luckily for Zeus and Hera, this plastic bag ended up blowing away shortly after we recorded this video.
    Almost all osprey nests in New Jersey contain some type of plastic. We can all help by reducing our use of single use plastics. Here are some simple ways that you can help:
    ~Never release balloons!
    ~Reduce your dependence/consumption of single use plastics.
    ~Reuse or repurpose things that can’t be recycled.
    ~Pick up plastic litter.
    ~Dispose of trash responsibly.

    Plastic sucks. Glad NJ is trying to minimize.
