Black Bear Caught on Trail Camera!

This large black bear was spotted on a trail camera we have installed at our Johnsonburg Swamp Preserve. Black bears are the largest land mammal in New Jersey. While their range has been expanding southward and eastward, they primarily reside in the northwestern portion of the state.
Black bears live in mixed hardwood forests, dense swamps and forested wetlands. They prefer areas with dense cover. In New Jersey, excellent bear habitat is found primarily within Sussex, Passaic, Warren and Morris counties.
