Something to try for people who get the error message when they try to change the .bak folder name (in my case my 2nd account was the "Guest" account that didn't have administrator access so I am guessing that was the issue)...
1) Re-start in safe mode by repeatedly hitting F8 (I needed to get a USB keyboard to do this as it didn't load wireless)
2) You can then log into your regular account and follow the instructions in the video (all the way through - I assume the people who "lost" their data didn't do the full switcharoo!?)
3) Reboot and it is fixed. Or at least it was for me!
4) Set up an administrator "Spare" account in case it happens again!
A great fix for a worry inducing problem, many thanks to the original poster.
How do you rename it? It won't let me rename the bak or any other profile thing ;(

I have just experienced this problem yesterday and my user guest account failed to logon..thx for your video..i followed it step by step..it helps..no need to go safe mode..once restart everything goes back to normal..your're the BEST man..

Thanks. Only problem I had different from the video is that I could not log into any other account. I restarted in SAFE mode (using F8 key) then followed the excellent instructions in this Video. Thank you.
Not everyone has 2 users. I can't switch accounts
I only have one user profile too. I was able to reboot and logon in safe mode, and then follow these same instructions. It worked for me.
I only have one account as well and I couldn't even get into safe mode.

Thank you for such an easy, straight forward video fix. I tried to logon to my computer to get ready for a meeting and was met with this error. Panic! I only have one user profile, but by rebooting in safe mode, I was able to follow these instructions and it worked. Beautiful! Back to work for me! Thank you!!

If you have an external link to Gmail, such as a phone number to reset the password, or a second Gmail linked to it, it will be easy

import notice and help: guys if you using the 1903 verion of windows 10 then you will no longer see the .bak extensions. to fix this issue, observe the accounts with same name and numbers, characters and letter in your profile list indicated in this video then delete those accounts with same numbers until one is left and keep that one in use. also know that the last digits of those account will be different but others digit will always be the same. I recently faced this issue on my windows 10 64 bit version 1903 and I fixed it by taking risk to do this and it worked without problem. on top of that advanced system care free version will slow down your computer(the free version), so be careful out there and it will also stop most of your apps from running smoothly, yes I am saying for it happened to me so watch out

With my very limited experience with this, I was surprised that your instructions worked; however, when logging into the user account that was affected, all my records are gone. Pictures, photos, music, files, everything. HELP PLEASE!
Hello, I have a problem, I'm in the folder profile list deleted accounts what should I do?
If you don't have an extra profile just go to safe mode by restarting computer then pressing f8 before windows loads. Worked like a charm thanks bro, now I think I'll make a backup disc lol lifesaver!

There are three questions. I would be grateful if you know the answers:
1) In the folder to the name of which I added .bak, there are only three files - (Default), ProfilesPath, RunLogonScriptSync. In the folder in whose name I deleted the .bak, there are not only these 3 files, but also 6 others. If after restarting everything works, do I need to copy 6 missing files from one folder to another?
2) In other videos people claim that need also in the folder in whose name deleted the .bak, change the Value Data to 0 in "RefCount" and in "State". I did it. Was this superfluous and I need to change Value Data to some other values?
3) The folder in the name of which I deleted the .bak is located in the TEMP directory. It affects something, and does it have to be moved somewhere?
i don't have .bak or .ba on SID..but i have that error msg whenever i tried to log-in to admin acct. (i have two accts., admin and standard user) wat to do?

The computer i am having trouble with is connected to user directory and there are none with the .bak also I have about 20 different profiles.
I can get the home screen but if i click control panal its says sever whatever i don't know what to do

Nove fyi safe mode is active activated by pressing F8 after restarting. The login normally and do all of the steps in this video starting with start button. This should allow you to be an admin. Good luck

how if the username is in domain group and the PC is in shared computer so it has multiple username? and also the .bak file are not shows up? how to fix this scenario because I faced these many times.

You should have a bunch of extra keys under ProfileList since there are multiple users. When you click on one of them you should be able to reference the path shown in the 'ProfileImagePath' string to determine which user the key is for.
As far as not having a profile with the .bak, that is something I have not encountered unfortunately. Best of luck.
