- This video shows how to resolve the temporary profile error in Windows 7.
-On keyboard hold down the 'windows' key and press the 'r' key.
-In the run prompt type regedit and hit enter.
-In the registry editor, browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
-Expand the ProfileList key and find the key that has .bak added to it.
-Delete the key that has the same string of characters, but DOES NOT have .bak next to it.
-Rename the key with .bak. Just delete the '.bak' part and hit enter.
-Close registry editor and reboot. You should be able to get back in to your profile now.

If it doesn't work for you... Use Malwarebytes to scan for malware... in my case it was active malware blocking the profile from loading correctly. My machine loaded fine in safe mode, that's what gave me the clue. GREAT VIDEO!
After I do all the steps then reset the temporary profile comes up and when I look at the regedit again the temp file is still there is there a way to fix this??

For me it helped to simply change ProfileImagePath value to your actual user directory (and ignore the .bak key).
This helps if your original profile had more errors than is covered in this video.

I can't begin to tell you how grateful i am for this video... i just turned my computer on for the first time in a long while and it took me to the temporary profile. I have been sitting here crying for an hour thinking i lost everything. Baby pictures, artwork, old letters..... thank you for this video.
For everyone that this is not working, make sure the profile path in the original key is still valid. For example, if your profile path is something like D:\user\profile, make sure "D" drive letter is still mapped to that drive. If not, change it to whatever the new drive letter is. This might happen if you add new drives or remap.

Actually after using some other fixes of which one caused me to just be stuck on windows logo for eternity i managed to boot into safe mode create new admin account move all the important files to the new admin account and completely wipe out the corrupted profile, thats what fixed it for me. I hope you wont have to go through what i had to i think if the fix from vid doesnt work for you either the safest option would be new admin account, i have found another fix which does work for a lot of people but you are running the risk of getting stuck on windows logo without login option or worse black screen just before the windows logo so even though it works for majority im not gonna recomend it bcause when it fails it fails big. I spent entire day to fix it and most of that time was spend on trying to launch at least into this temp accont after couple of diffrent ways I finally managed to get into safe mode and save the day in 10 min.

Didnt work once i rebooted it was the same, i only had 2 registry keys they were exactly the same except 1 had .bak
I have done it twice now (very easy to follow) but every time it comes back on it brings up the message again

THANK YOU!! My Lenovo ideapad overheated and, instead of getting a temporary profile notification, all of my contents were erased except my apps but none of them would open. Now my computer is back to normal!

I have a question: if I have already saved new data to the new profile, will this process delete the new data?
I tried a similar method from another youtube video WITHOUT restarting in the end so it still logged me into the same temporary profile, but when I tried this and restarted my laptop it worked! Thank you so much :)

I did this on a 2008 Server, with many profiles through RDP. Many of them had the -bak suffix. I had to delete all of them (including non -bak) and it finally worked. Thank you! It is a very annoying issue.

For those who this tutorial did not work,
u just follow revert back ur old computer to restore point from previous date during ur computer is normal :
Click Start ( ), click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click System Restore. The Restore system files and settings window opens. Select Choose a different restore point, and then click Next. Select a date and time from the list of available restore points, and then click Next.
Can't do it, just got the admin no working password problem and afterwards this happened while restore would take me to back where I started.

This technique did not solve my problem. I even tried with the disk scan step. When all else failed, I chose to "RESTORE YOUR COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER TIME" and this finally worked! (Systems and Security/Action Center). Hopes this helps.
Been looking through the comments for a fix if this doesn’t work (it didn’t work for me) and every solution I’ve seen gets mixed reviews. so I’m wary of trying any in fear of causing more problems. Where do I go from here? Anyone?
If this doesn’t work I’d recommend trying system restore to restore to a previous date when everything was working. Best of luck

I didn't see the error message. I moved all the data to the temporary profile. When i logged off all the data was gone. Windows did delete it permanently. I used a program called GetDataBack and it still couldn't find it. That program gets deleted files back even if the drive is formatted but it couldn't get the files back that windows removed.
Man I thought that this wouldn’t work bc I read here many negative comments. but it worked!! tysm!!! So easy! I thought that I will never fix this. 😭

Idk why but it just shows me the name with .bak and one with none, it has no duplicates and when I deleted the one with no bak and so the remaining 1 was the one with bak i removed the (.bak) and then restarted my laptop but still it didn't work :(

WORKED PERFECTLY.... Thank you so much for this video... I updated my windows 10 with te latest version tht came in 2020 nd it literally took away all my files and everything i customized in my laptop.. It was basically a new 2004 version windows laptop with just the softwares i installed and i freaked out. I tried so many other tutorials and none of them worked but tis was my SAVIOUR. Easy AF and works perfectly. :)

Yes it works when you reboot...but when you shut off computer and login on again...it goes back to a temporary profile...so you have to do process again...how do you get it work and not have to go through this process each time you start computer!??

This didn't work for me at first, but it pointed me in the right direction. We have an Active Directory domain, and it was a domain user profile that was the problem. I didn't care about losing the profile itself, so I just removed the .bak version of the registry key (from an account with admin privileges), then let Windows create a new profile for the domain user upon login.
Wait, so removing the "correct" version registry key fixed it, rather than renaming it? I will try this too.
I tried this, but I accidentally deleted a different SID key, the last part of SID keys were 1001, 1000, 1000.bak , however, I deleted the 1001 instead of 1000, since I can’t rename while removing “.bak” , I renamed 1000 into 1001 and I removed .bak the SID key with “.bak”, I restarted my computer and it worked. But it still gets me anxious and it makes me overthink that I accidentally deleted SID key, will it still be okay?

I tried it and it partly worked, therefore didn't work. I got back to a profile I had lost 3 months ago .
In the recycle bin o can find and restore files deleted last week but it goes into a folder with proper name but empty of anything else but the retrieved deleted file.
+ any folder I would try to open, I get an error message saying it the path is not linked. Cannot access.
What shall I do?
And at least how to reverse the procedure and get the .bak profiled I deleted?
