Windows is a very weird operating system. All the time it comes with some new, annoying and strange issues. So today we are going to see one such issue. Have you ever face a situation where you logged into your user account and you get this Pop-Up notification saying that
"You have been signed in with a temporary profile"? Which further says that,
On the top of that if you had any files saved on your desktop or my document, they all are vanished. Don't worry its not actully vanished. They are still there in the system. So without panicking follow the instructions in this video very carefully.
"You can't access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out. To fix this, sign out and try signing in later. Pleaes see the event log for details or contact your system administrator."
Clearly None of the suggestions from the notification is going to work and If you avoid this and continue working with this temporary profile, then beware, the data you save on the desktop or mydocument, will be deleted once you are logged out. Because its a temporary profile. So this issue occurs when the User Profile of the account is corrupted from the system.
In order to resolve this issue. Follow the steps shown in this video.
So first of all, log into the another Administrator account if you have created on the system. If not, you can enable the Built-In-Administrator account. You can do that easily by watching this video.
SIDs or Security Identifiers are unique for each user account. So this SID is the uniqe identification for my user account.
Now go to the Registry Editor. For that Go to the run command and type REGEDIT and hit enter. Now on the right hand side select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and click on find. Type "ProfileList" and hit Find Next. It will search this key through whole registry editor. You can expand the following path and find this Key manually.
Once you find the ProfileList key, you will find multiple SIDs if you expand it. Each one associated with different user account. So our SID is ending with 1001. Lets find out if its present? Yes its there. And you can see the duplicate entry is also there with the extension .bak.
You can identify the user account associated with each SIDs by selecting any SID and on the right hand side pan, find the entry "ProfileImagePath" whose value shows the user account name associated with it. This is the user account Administrator in which I am currently logged in. Like wise, if you select the key, ending with .bak you can see the profile associated with it is my real account and the another same key is associated with profile named TEMP.
This is the user account which is causing the issue. Each time I am trying to log in, i am getting logged into this TEMP profile and getting that pop up notification and am not able to see any files on my desktop or mydocs.
So you might be wondering where are my files? For that go to C Drive. Users and select your real user account. In my case. Its this one. Go into that and go to Desktop. There it is. All the files are there. Same for MyDocuments and Downloads.
Now I hope the situation is pretty clear for you. Let me summerize it for you. This is my real account with this name. I am trying to login to this account. But due to some fault the SID for this account has been changed with the extension .bak. And one same SID has been created which is associated with the user account TEMP. This one. So each time when I logged into to my user account, it fails to recognize SID associated with my user account and then logged into that Temp account.
So in order to resolve this issue. We will first take backup of my user account to some other drive or external USB. I have already done that. This is just a precaution step and now I am going to delete the SID associated with TEMP profile. Rename the real profile and remove .bak extension.
Sometimes, the profile name associated with this .bak account which is your real account also gets changed. So in that case, after renaming this SID by removing .bak, also rename the profile name from here. Just double click on ProfileImagePath and change it to your real user account. I am not going to do that, because in my case it has not been changed.
Now close the registry editor and restart the system...
Login to your user account. You will be able to see your files on your desktop now. And that pop up wont appear again.

the sign doesn't come again, but all my files in desktop and download and others are still in my user folder, is there anyway to get them back to their original place?
Guys if this doesn't work. Search for Administrator in the search bar after clicking the window button Type "Administrator" On the left side youll see add account Type ur account name enter pass word then switch to it. Everything will then work just fine

To those who havent gotten it to work, and always come back to Preparing Windows, I suggest if all else fails, do a system restore. It wont affect your files whatsoever, and I got back to my Microsoft account. I asked Microsoft Support for this, and my computer's okay now.
Can it work even if you have to create a restore point?

Really helpful video, thank you. Unfortunately, it hasn't worked for me. After I have deleted the temporary file and renamed the '.bak' one, I restart the PC but it sets up another temp profile and renames the proper one to '.bak' again. I have tried it several times but this keeps happening. Do you have any other ideas please? Thank you.
That’s what happened to me :-/ Something is triggering the temporary file that went unresolved
After deleting the "temp" registry and renaming the original one, it renames itself back to "user.bak" and it still creates the temp profile

Hi from Greece. I read below in the comments that some people follow the procedure but the problem returns. Make sure you also do 2 things: 1) double click the refcount of the "good" sid and make sure it is zero, 2) DOUBLE CLICK THE STATE OF THE GOOD SID AND MAKE IT ZERO. Also check that the filepath of the good sid correctly points to the correct folder (i've seen the drive letter be wrong in many cases)
For those who didn't find it work,
Use system restore,allow it some time....that's it ur pc will return to what it was without affecting files.This worked in my case,thus sharing it..

1.) Guys, i deleted the built-in administrator account in the Users folder in Local Disk!!
2.) Now when i log in to the built-in administrator account, it tells me "You've been signed in with a temporary profile. You cant access your files, and files created in this profile will be deleted when you sign out".
3.) The built-in administrator account now shows as "TEMP" on the Users folder!!
4.) How can i get/recover my built-in administrator back!!

Sub Killer How many Folders are there in your C:\Users folder. Write down the name of each folders here.

Techno Math Administratior, Public and my account.
But i deleted the administrator........now its just the public and my account

I carefully followed the steps in the video several times, deleting the temporary profile and renaming the .bak profile by removing the .bak extension and renaming the value data with my original profile path C:\Users\MyUsername but my PC keeps signing me back in with the temporary profile every time I restart the PC. Please help!

For me, this didn't work until I followed all of the steps while logged into the TEMP account, not the Administrator account. That is when both the 1001 (TEMP Account) and the 1001.bak (My real account) appeared, and I deleted the 1001 (TEMP) one, then renamed the 1001.bak (Real account) one to 1001 like the video says. Then I restarted my computer and logged into my profile like usual, and although it took a while to load, everything is back to normal, but clearer!! I have no more annoying pop ups, and my user folder has my actual name now!! Thank you so so much!!!
How did u log into the temp account when it logs u into it every time u log in? Like others, when I restart it does an update and I'm back into the temp account when I log back on, what did u do differently?

I did this once and it worked, then it happened again so i followed the steps but the second time it didn't. if i accidentally deleted the wrong user how do i get it back?

Search for Administrator from the search tool bar after clicking the window button. on the left hand side u will c Add account or search account option click on that type ur deleted account password then switch to it..
Only one s-1-5-21 folder without .bak, immediate help please....

I did this from beginning to end and I still see the pop up notification. My username didn't need to be renamed as it was the real user name.

@@anuvarshini4095 No, had to create another log in account and made it the main account. Haven't got my old files back but there is a tool to download to do that but I haven't did it yet.
@@redeemed1352 after you have created a new login I think you can just copy all the files in the previous user and paste it, after running a scan. 🤔
Thank you so much for this brilliant solution! I had changed my screen scaling from 125% back to 100% and then signed out as required, but I had 3 folders open. When Windows signed back in, this temporary profile error occurred. I followed your instruction and the problem is now fixed. :-)

The method not worked for me. After completing the procedure as explained by you and after boot the same problem appears again and the file with the .bak extension appears again. I don't what to do.

guys i am good at computer because i get my marks in 90 or higher so i have a better solution for y'all first thing is direct shutdown your computer and then go in safe mode then a setup will come saying something is preventing windows from starting then direct shutdown again and this time again run in safe mode if u see launch repair startup click on that to it will give u the same so if it doesnt come in the black screen where u haven't shutdown the computer properly go in safe mode again it doesnt matter because they both will be the same thing let the repair setup do its thing for a few minutes or hours then u are back in your normal account! remember make sure u had a account or this wont work
Hello I am having a problem...when I tried this a while ago renaming the profiles did not work for me..and now I don't even see the .BAK anywhere in the profile list and it is still logging me in with a temporary profile..I tried system restore, I tried disk defragment and nothing seems to work. I tried this way in the video and it didn't work. Maybe because I have Windows 8.1? I did System Restore and that worked! System Restore is at Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced System Settings > System Properties > System Protection tab. I waited a few hours for my PC to process it. None of my files were deleted in the process! System Restore recommend that I go to a restore point just before I installed iCloud. It says that iCloud might be the cause of the problem. Just before the problem began about a week ago, I was trying to use OneDrive for the first time. Maybe iCloud and OneDrive are the same thing? A message says that programs linked to iCloud might be corrupted, so you have to re-install those.
I wrote too soon. The temporary profile came back after it updated and restarted. I Restored again. I'm back to my original user desktop. I'm afraid if I turn it off, it will go to temporary profile again. So I leave the PC on all the time.
I followed the steps but The notification still popped up and can't save files(its all. temporary) once restarted, all gone

I'm at this point thinking there is something under the surface that's causing it in my case it happens literally every time I boot my computer up. It's been this way for almost 3 days now and it's the same thing. I first log in and I get the temporary profile, I sign out and then sign back in and then it's fine, it signs in without incident in the 2nd go. I don't know if this method will work in my case. It's been happening ever since I installed the Mental Ray plugin for MAYA 2016 so I'm thinking there may be a connection.
Uninstalling avg somehow caused this issue for my friend's laptop aha.

My computer is connected with network server this may cause a problems to my network server connected to other computers?
I wish I went to this before I went to other tutorials. The first tutorial told me I needed to delete the .bak and the other one. I can still locate all my original files in the C drive, however when I go to the profile list in the registry editor there is no more .bak file and the 1001 number has been changed to 1002. Any way to still fix it?
Marisa ok. There is no issue if you are not getting that pop now. As you said there is no .bak file now. So considering your issue is already resolved, here is the solution you can apply to your current 1002 profile.
1) Go and locate your original files (You can get it under C:\Users\"YourUserName")
2) Copy this folder "YourUserName" and paste it in the newly created profile.
3) You can find the name of the newly created profile name by going into the regedit and locate the key ending with 1002. Check the value for "ProfileImagePath" Suppose the new profile has the name "NewYourUserName"
4) So copy all the contents from "YourUserName" to "NewYourUserName".
Restart your system and you will find all your files and folder back on where it was previously.
