This was very upsetting when I logged on everything was gone, except some programs, it's a corrupted file for your profile log in here's the fix, I guess it's a known problem with windows 7 and can happen more then once.
I talk and film myself logging into my computer and having a default profile come up instead, all my settings were gone, I show you the FIX, thanks for watching.

Haven't logged into my youtube account in years and have never left a comment, but I did this time to say this is great. I am not a total computer ignoramus but normally when I'm looking for a fix for something the instructions aren't clear, or it gets to a point where my system differs so I can't do what I'm meant to do. Your video is extremely clear and well thought out. I followed the steps, right down to having to change the tmp from one folder to another as it didn't work on the first try. Hallelujah my desktop changed from black with nothing working as it should back to the way I'd set everything up over the years. You saved me a lot of time and frustration. Thank you so much.

Worked great. When deciding which file to label .tmp and which to leave blank... compare the 'ProfileImagePath' property for both.
Folder with 'ProfileImagePath' : C:\Users\Temp (should end .tmp)
Folder with 'ProfileImagePath' : C:\Users\YOURNAME (should end BLANK)

Thanks Jordan, this worked for me. I did shortcut the process slightly. I renamed the profile with no .bak to .tmp, then took the .bak off the other, then renamed the .tmp to .bak. Worked first time. The only worrying thing is that it happened at all. How many people would be completely stymied by that!
I can confirm that this also works for Windows 8.1, however, the last 4 numbers of the registry folders will be 1001 instead of 1000. Worked like a charm man, thanks for the vid

After the newest Windows 7 update and my antivirus update happened one after another, my profile also became corrupted...this solution still worked for me, as well! I had to use the second solution as well. Thank you so much for the easy to follow format.
Remember when doing his second option to change the second .tmp into anything else, then make the first blank .tmp and change the second into blank. Apparently they can't be named the same during that renaming process. Anyways yeah it worked. Instant subscriber

I'd like to chime in and give a huge thanks as well. Like someone said, for me everything was fine and then I was dished out this very nasty and alarming surprise. This fixed worked for me, what a HUGE relief! It was the second option that fixed mine as well. (This actually seems to make the most sense when you look at the details in the registry keys). At any rate I'm all fixed.....thanks again!

Great help but I would advise everyone to export a copy of the registry file to their desktop or C:\ drive before carrying out this procedure. Then they have a backup to go to if there is a problem.
So go to file\export and select a name (regbackup perhaps) and a location to save the file to.
If you need to restore to the version of the registry you started with go to file\import select your saved file and import it back.

Try to left click 1 time on the name of file, it'll be highlighted then left click again at the end to edit it. That should work.

Just as a note, my profile was so corrupt that it did not even allow me to open the "regedit". It kept saying that my "Internet settings were preventing me to open the file". I tried to change the internet Options but it was not saving. So what I did, I just created another Administrator profile with a password and used that profile to follow your steps. The first one did not work for me but the second one worked like a charm (switching the .tmp around).

This worked for me, on a large company domain, seems Microsoft pushed a Win7 update out last night that corrupted profiles, as I've had to use this on 3 machines as of the writing of this comment. I went ahead and just named the TEMP profile (the one without the .bak) to BAD and renamed the .BAK one to the normal profile, taking the .TMP off the key, rebooted, and it worked on 3 laptops.

Although, in our case, we didn't have ours conveniently labeled with a ".bak". we picked one of the two at random, failed, then picked the other one, success!

Hey it doesn't work for me I have 5 accounts on my PC and when I do it the other accounts and the account I was thing to fix disappeared from the login screen and gave me two options - one to my brothers account - the one I was using to try and fix it - and another to a random account I have never seen before called 'other user',. Please please help!!!
