I like to run it on older hardware in the 32bit version, tick a few checkboxes, change a few settings, get rid of the transparency/3D stuff and it will run fine on any old potato, and run most 98/2k/xp programs/drivers/hardware with little problems.

I was hoping that happened but with XP. XP was just... bliss, y'know? Windows 7 is definitely the greatest I'd say, but XP was just special. Also what I dearly miss about both old OSs is that their Search functions so much better than modern Windows... I am on Win11 right now, but I have purchased StartAllBack, installed Shell by Nilesoft and it's a bit disjointed but a bit more pleasant experience since I can customise things without them being _too_ disjointed like reverting the context menus to Win10 which just doesn't fit well with Win11's aesthetics. Also, actually my point here was that I set the start menu to like Windows 10 and stuff and the search is miles better. I just hate that they introduced internet to mostly everything, I hate the accounts, I hate the ads, the bloatware, like half of the problems of modern Windows is just these. I do quick edits outside of plain trimming (which can be done in Photos, which doesnt accept opus codec in videos which explains them being silent) in fricking Windows Movie Maker. Clipchamp used to not bother me so much but they then decided to do the stupid accounts thing like its another platform, and they also dont let you export with custom resolutions and settings. I miss XP so much man but everytime I get that hit, I realise a lot of stuff dont work with XP anymore, like I downloaded an archive version of Encarta Kids so I could show it off to my siblings and maybe give them member berries if they even were conscious beings when i was able to use it and find it on school computers. i think the easier question would be, what can you not do... i think it boils down to a handful of online games that mandate specific anti-cheat methods (core isolation, tpm, secure boot etc.) or those that exclusively want a fully fledged directx 12 implementation. and then you have some huge application suites like from adobe who just artificially put a stop to launching their software in windows 7, simply because they do not "want to support" it anymore. yet, adobe creative cloud versions 2020/2021 still work on windows 7. and these have a very very rich feature set already. so if you want to avoid using win10 or even win11 then there is not much you have to leave behind.

I was planning to use just the default Windows Media Player too but it didn't support opus codec. I already converted most of my media files into m4a or aac or whatever and not opus but I already like MPC-HC at this point but at least I can trim videos quickly with Photos which also wouldn't work with anything opus in it which explained the silence when I tried to trim things before.

Literally everything I wanted to use was still working on WIndows 7 up until last year. Didn't have to do any weird workarounds. I really only switched to Windows 11 because steam stopped working. If you played super modern games, Windows 7 probably stopped working way earlier, but I mostly play games that are 5 to 10 years old so for me everything worked flawlessly. If Windows 7 was still supported by steam I would have no issues using it today.
(And no, viruses were never an issue for me, if you are smart on the internet you have nothing to worry about even when using an old unsupported version. It's mostly just fear mongering that makes people think old unsupported versions will somehow self destruct as soon as you go to one sketchy website)
I see Windows 7 like I do a classic car. If it still works for all your use cases, then it's perfectly fine and anyone trying to tell you that you are wrong for using it because "it's not modern" can screw off. Even after being on Windows 11, it literally doesn't do anything I couldn't already do in 7. The times of OS upgrades being actually meaningful are behind us, unless you use niche modern features. If a classic OS works fine for all your use cases and you protect yourself from any viruses, you have nothing to worry about and you aren't "wrong" for using it. Different tools for different people. A modern OS isn't objectively better than Windows 7. If anything, all the stupid crap they cram in now a days probably means you are better off using an older OS if you can manage.
