Thanks for the video, exactly what I was looking for! You state at 5:09 that autofocus does only work with certain sigma lenses on the mc-11. I've heard differently that it works with certain adapter on ef lenses but only with contrast detect. And now I'm confused. Does this depend on the a7 model? PS: I guess reason for the difference between mc-11 and vello might be internal reflection coating. Or maybe something in the edges of the path of unfocused light. You could look at the bokeh quality maybe.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Sorry I meant a video by Mathieu Gasquet, but he only stated "forget it with ef lenses, it's too slow". So I think I misunderstood him. Anyways, thanks for the video!
Hi Dustin. Great video, as always. A couple of points, if I may. The Sigma adapter (if I remember correctly) only works in Contrast Detect Autofocus, that's why it works in video, but it's much slower when taking photos because it doesn't support Phase Detect Autofocus that latest Sony cameras have. On the other hand, Metabones adapters support both the CDAF and PDAF modes (which is why they are more expensive and much more versatile). By default they work in PDAF mode ( I believe it's called the 'green' mode). To switch an adapter to the CDAF mode you need to power the adapter while pressing the button on the adapter. There are instructions on how to do it on Metabones website, but basically, you can switch them from CDAF (for video or older lens that don't work well/at all with PDAF) to PDAF (which is better for taking stills on cameras that support PDAF, focusing is MUCH quicker). All cheaper electronic adapters support only CDAF.
There is less focus on adapters these days because there are so many native E-mount lenses, so frankly I haven't done a lot of updated research. Last I checked, I still like the Sigma MC-11 th best.
It should be noted that EF-S lenses can be modified to fit adapters by cutting off a little part of that rear extension. There are various videos here that show how to do it. Needless to say, attempting this mod will void any warranties attached to the lens.
The new Tamron primes, Zeiss glass, Tamron 70-200 G2, Sigma 14mm f/1.8 ART. Essentially very sharp lenses are still sharp, though the Canon 35L II seemed to take the biggest hit.
hi dustin, i would like to ask how's the performance of the EFS lenses especially the 24mm on a sony body? Did it produced vignetting? because last time i have checked is that sony's apsc sensors are larger than canon apsc sensors.
I recently picked up an A6300 along with two Metabones adapters: the EF-E V adapter and the FD-E adapter. I love it! I've got a lot of Canon glass and don't want to immediately shift to Sony glass. I do plan on buying the A7R3 within the next six months and may start the shift over then, but then again, maybe not. I love what I can do with even the older FD lenses on the A6300. Yes, I have to manually focus, but I'm used to that. It's not quite as easy as it is on an SLR body, but it's doable.
With newer lenses...definitely. But for some reason for me the older, FD lenses are more difficult to focus on the A6300. I still love it! Of course, it can't replace my 5D Mark III, which isn't the best full frame out there, but it's still fairly good.
I also feel sort of silly now. I haven't had the A6300 long and after hearing back from you I checked the instructions again and started playing with it. Lo and behold! I found the focus magnifier and figured out how to use it. Now THAT makes a HUGE difference!!! Thanks for your comment! It got me thinking and looking deeper in to the features of this new camera (to me)!
I was literally just considering getting a vello for my Canon 24mm pancake to use with Sony cams and couldnt find anyone using this combo. Thank you SO much for this comprehensive review!!
I think the Vello does most likely communicate the lens description somewhat correctly, there are multiple locations and different ways this information is included in the ARW files. The Adobe software doesn't exhaustively try all sources for this information. Maybe somebody at Adobe could improve their ARW support. Excellent video, I always thought I needed the Metabones for any decent performance. Sad to see the speedboosters aren't nearly as good optically as I had hoped for. I was looking for Leica M mount adapters lately and those have such a smal flange distance already nobody was able to make a speedbooster variant. Good to see I didn't miss out.

As to the snow, I liked it too, but figure it's a green screen background loop added later. I do seem to see reflections from something moving behind the camera. But that could have happened when it was originally recorded.
Sony A7rIV + Metabones V in advanced mode with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L III -- everything works with some AF limitations, notably real-time tracking. In a word: No. Eye AF and Animal Eye AF both work, but the continuous tracking does not. It'll lock on and then lose lock almost instantly if your lens or your subject moves. The native Sony glass will lock on and not let go until you tell it to. That means it'll work fine for portraits, landscapes and anything posed really, but *no* to action, no wildlife unless they're sitting still, and no sports. This also means you cannot focus+recompose, so you're back to using the thumbstick if you want to focus off-center.
Sure. There is a difference in the necessary distance between the optics of the lens and the camera sensor on mirrorless bodies than there is on DSLRs. Mirrorless cameras don't have the room in the camera body that the mirror would occupy, so these adapters actually move the optical path of the lens further away from the sensor to accommodate for that. An extension tube would have to move those optics even further away.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for taking the time to explain this, though, sadly I think I may need to find somewhere that has pictures for my poor mind. I haven't tested that combination with any adapter, so I don't know that I could give an informed opinion. I get the most consistent results from the Sigma MC-11.
Hello Dustin, First of all thank you for the explanation of what Vello Accelerator does. Could you please share your experience with Tamron 70-200G2 lens and MC-11 on Sony a6500 if you have one? Does AF works well or better say adequately? Which adapter could you recommend for Tamron lenses except Metabones one. Thanks once again.
I’m going to test the Metabones 5th generation in a month or so. I would say that the AF works adequately on the MC-11 + 70-200 G2 but not exceptionally. You won’t get Eye AF. Try using AF-C mode to get more consistent results with less freezing
Great video! I am looking to change from canon to Sony but my most used lens is the zeiss milvus 35mm 1.4. Do you think using this lens with an adapter will sacrifice the amazing images this lens produces?
Dustin, thank u for your reviews as always. There is any chance of putting a tripod mount on the mc11? Im gonna use it with the sigma 24-70 art on a monopod for shooting video and aim afraid that the lens mount on the camera will suffer.
Im still not sure which 1 to get lol Ive got the Tamron 15-30 and the Sigma 14mm 1.8 in Canon mount and want to mount it onto an A7r2, which would be better do you think... the autofocus bit doesnt bother me as I always manual focus anyway.
If you don't care about autofocus, then go for the cheaper Vello. Still, since you do own a Sigma lens, I think spending for the Mc-11 might be worth, particularly this time of year when there are a lot of discounts. The 15-30 VC doesn't seem to focus well on any adapters I've used. MF is fine, obviously.
Have you tried metabone iv and v? I found reviews on the fifth generation are hard to find, so I think that maybe you could give an opinion about the difference on the two generations adaptor. BTW, I adapt Canon lenses.
I believe 5th gen uses the same firmware. Difference between the two is in how the lenses are secured on. I am quiet content on speed of Metabones IV but only on slow or stationary subjects. For AF-C, native lens is a must. My version of Metabones Speedbooster have a slight cool color cast but otherwise ultra fun to use.
Hey Dustin , I am 5D IV shooter and considering to switch to Sony A7R III , The Only thing that concerns me is the Auto Focusing using Canon and Tamron Lenses , Currently I use the Tamrom 24- 70 2.8 G1 , Samyang 14mm and the Canon 50mm 1.4 , I Shoot Street actions ( Fast subjects ), Landscape and Video yes RUclips Videos to be precise . I don't do Sports and Wildlife. Would you recommend the switch ? Thanks
I am interested in using the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 on a Sony. How does the AF perform? I've borrowed the Sony Zeiss Distagon, but I really can't swallow the US$1500 price tag considering its optical performance wide open, its AF performance when stopped down, and it doesn't support 20fps either.
Dustin thanks for reply. Oh yea? so its soft on edges? I was looking at the Mitakon Zhongyi Turbo ii but then I saw the vello on sale so I purchased it thinking the focal glass would be better the the turbo, but after seeing your video it seems the image takes a hit. I only do video. The reviews I have seen on the Turbo ii have said its super sharp so im just curious what is better
I seriously, seriously doubt that you can add additional elements (which all these do) and not take some kind of sharpness hit. The 44-2 isn’t sharp on the edges at wide apertures anyway.
I've been using the commlite ef with my sony a7sii for the last 2 years and it works great. but I only use manual focus (the af performance is terrible using the adapter)
Thank you for showing how the 70-200 G2 looks on the sony! I ordered it for my D750 but just to experiment I'll be trying it out on my sony. Sony is a great small package for casual shooting and is a joy to use with vintage glass!

@Briar Kashton i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Question------i have been told by Nikon and tamron, that the new tamron 24mm f2.8 G2, Nikon f mount, that this lenses will not function in auto setting on my older Nikon D50 because Nikon updated this lenses system.....My question is this, will this lens work on my D50 if i only use it in the manual position?....thank you REPLY
It will likely work in manual mode, but I would ask them first. The older Nikons used a screw type autofocus system that is, frankly, seriously outdated at this point.
I RATHER ASK YOU CAUSE I TRUST YOU MORE, I SPOKE TO SEVERAL PEOPLE AND IT TOOK ME CONVERSATION AFTER CONVERSATION TO FIND OUT WHAT I NOW KNOW......WELL, HERE GOES ANOTHER 1200.00 BUCKS.....
I really find this review useful because I want to buy one adapter to fit EF glass to m43. I was thinking to buy Metabones speedboster 0.64x..but now I see that, at least in your case, the glass from the adapter affects the sharpness of the image.. I dont know if that's the case with the speedboster but I have to say..that thing it's very expensive 650$$. I did se some reviews in which the metabones speedboster didn't affect the image but I don't know if that is true because I can't verify this. Where I live there is not an option to rent this adapter. Do you have any experience with that one? Anyone?
I haven't used it myself, but just know that any adapter that employs additional glass elements will cause some image degradation. I didn't find real-world results were punished as badly as comparison test indicates. Sometimes the "look" of images is more important than absolute sharpness. The Vello adapter allows you to experiment with this at a third of the cost, though.
All the earthly conundrums and 'holy' trinities (lens triplets or camera-adapter-lens combo's) aside i wish you a nice 1st of advent (while my wife is making Christmas cards with pictures made by a camera obscure made from a caravan). Greetings from Jalovik, Serbia.
Thanks a lot. But it is not yet Christmas here. I am Dutch, living in Serbia, but we, our family, are still celebrating the western Christmas (24/25 dec) time, with 1st of advent today. The neighbouring houses and the rest of the nation is celebrating the orthodox Christmas (6/7 Jan). Presume you also celebrate 1st of advent today?
Although this posting is a year ago, I still enjoy watching it and I found it very informative. I went ahead and purchased the Vello adapter since I have two beloved EF-S lenses (10-22mm f3.5-4.5 & 70-300mm IS USM) to adapt onto my old Nex-5N. However, I would probably need to say, to my greatest disappointment, the Vello adapter performs badly in my experience in term of autofocus. Even in bright day, the focus speed is slow. The lens always hunts back and forth once and then jitters to achieve the final lock. This behavior was also shown in Maarten Heilbron 's review on this particular adapter. Note that these two lenses are listed in its compatibility chart and Maarten uses much newer camera (A7 ii). The other adapter by Commlite, on the other hand, seems not behaving like that based on the reviews I have seen. In addition, the adapter sometimes does not recognize the f-stop and I need to switch off/on the power to make it work. Anyway, I understand the third party and more affordable adapter does not usually live up to high expectation. But, for a adapter behaving this bad, it is better that Mr. Abbott would consider leaving it out of the recommendation list.
My review was based on much newer camera bodies than yours, so I don’t think you should be surprised that poorer focus systems would produce poorer results. My recommendations were made based on the cameras that I tested in on
@@DustinAbbottTWI I notice the camera you were using is a6500 which is released in 2016. Mr. Maarten Heilbron used A7 ii which is released in 2014 for his reviews, where he has concluded that Vello "... was a relic and unpredictable ..." I wonder if two-year gap makes such a difference. Maybe the behavior is lens specific.
(follow up) The vello adapter shorts out my sony battery during the operation. The battery level suddenly drops from 50% to depletion. Later when I try to charge the battery, it only takes about a few minutes and I get 100% indication but then depletes again after a short while. This 3rd party, chinese made adapter could give you unpredictable trouble like this. Also, I read about the someone's blog, basically saying that with the adapter on the camera drains out the battery more quickly.
Dustin Abbott, my Nikon 6/2.8, Nikon 13/5.6, rare world's first ATG Nikon 13/5.0 (modified) and ATG Canon EF200/1.2 (modified) work well on Vello Accelerator adapter onto Sony A6500. 1. 6mm @ 2.0 2. 13mm @ 5.0 3. 13mm @ 4.0 (13.84mm @ F3.55) 4. 200mm @ 0.9 (213mm @ F0.85) The best is using it with the ATG Zeiss N210/0.03 (modified for EF).
Tried Zhongyi Lens Turbo, but this is better due to aperture adjustment on EF lenses. I forgot that an F-mount to EF adapter is needed when using Nikon AI & AIS lenses. Dustin Abbott, do they or anyone make A-Mount to E-Mount with 0.71X?

This adopter issue has recently surfaced since 3rd party lens makers are not producing lenses as they once did for Sony, Nikon ,Canon camera bodies etc.adopters don't work....
please, sigma makes a art lens but you must use their adopter with it for the E mount, they now make nothing for the "A" that is new technology, either does Tamron.....Tokina lenses you can keep !......
So many people bought into the Sony "A" mount because Sony flat out lied ! They even sent their representatives out to get reviewed and promised the folks the "A" mount was not a passing phase and will continue to be supported and produced....Sony talked out of both sides of their mouths and i advise you that since you have business relations with them now, you do not get hurt by them...... happily i can say, "personally i do not need Sony support for the "A" mount, but many people are not as fortunate as i am"..........IF i ever buy into another brand of camera i promise you it will not be a Sony.......Sony has abused my trust and i will never ever trust them again.........
I disagree. I love having the option of using my EF lenses on Sony bodies. You just have to be realistic about the strengths and shortcomings of adapting lenses.
Not when these lenses are so expensive!........putting adopters out that do not do the full job is inexcusable .....This is a problem Sony had much to do with creating when they throw away the "A" mount......
Not quite sure what you mean here, Howard. My point is about leveraging your existing lenses on a new system. I wouldn't buy a Canon lens specifically to use on a Sony body personally. I think Sony stopped supporting the A mount more because of lackluster sales. They've been much more successful with E Mount cameras.
my ability to do manual focusing is not good, so i need an adopter that provides 100% of the lens and cameras ability to allow all auto focusing and auto focusing focus points, not just some.....To pay all the money for a lens/camera body and not get all it's features is a bad investment, i find.....
If Nikon goes to image in body stabilization i will buy their camera body plus their 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 lens and sell off all my Sony equipment which is extensive and call it a day....i will not forgive Sony for what they did to the A mount system......Until then, it looks like i will have to make the sony A mount 16-50mm f2.8 aps-c lens hoping this lens will provide a better image than my current 24-70mm f2.8 full frame......i use the Sigma 24-105mm ART. which i find excellent but it's a f4 which causes me to carry a flash unit and i am a little guy and can not handle all this equipment being lugged around...

I have a kit of vintage glass. My favorites are the Helios 44-2 and the SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4
Dustin Abbott Hey ok yeah I can't wait too get those I have the smc takumar 55mm f2 and 135mm 3.5 both fantastic.
Fantastic.
Thanks
Have you tried metabone iv and v? I found reviews on the fifth generation are hard to find, so I think that maybe you could give an opinion about the difference on the two generations adaptor. BTW, I adapt Canon lenses.
I've used the IV, not the V.
Simon Leung Thanks for your reply! Really informative~
Thanks
Check back after I've done my A7R III review. I suspect that everything will focus a bit faster with the improved focus system in it.
Are you switching to Sony A7r3 Dustin ? and if its fine Please also review A7R3 with New fifth Gen Metabones Adapter
I'm not switching, per se, but will probably add one to my kit. I'll test the Metabones V at some point.
Hi Dustin. Love your vids. Can you tell me which firmware update are you using on your sigma mc11?
It is the last version as of this past week. I made sure that it had the most current firmware update before doing the review.
I haven't used that combo as I never had those two items at the same time.
Thanks!
What happens if you run the speedbooster with sigma apsc lenses (18-35, 50-100)?
I haven't tested that. It should theoretically be possible, with the typical vignette issues as mounting them on full frame DSLRs.
Hmm. That Vello looks almost exactly like my Commlite adapter. Perhaps a rebrand of the V2 Commlite?
I have no idea.
How do you think the Vello Accelerator for a Helios 44-2 m42 with ring for with A6500 ? I was looking at the Lens Turbo but the Vello was on sale
I've tried the combo. It works fine, though IQ takes a bit of a hit, particularly on the edges.
All of these work fine for manual focus, but most people want autofocus. My tests are more focused on the autofocus end of things.
Thank you for showing how the 70-200 G2 looks on the sony! I ordered it for my D750 but just to experiment I'll be trying it out on my sony.
Sony is a great small package for casual shooting and is a joy to use with vintage glass!
It really is great with vintage glass.
you all prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know a way to log back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid forgot the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me!
@Tate Jeremias Instablaster ;)
@Briar Kashton i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Question------i have been told by Nikon and tamron, that the new tamron 24mm f2.8 G2, Nikon f mount, that this lenses will not function in auto setting on my older Nikon D50 because Nikon updated this lenses system.....My question is this, will this lens work on my D50 if i only use it in the manual position?....thank you
REPLY
Great vid Dustin, u r one smart dude.
LOL
I was thinking of getting a Sony 6500. My 24 and 50mm Sigma would be perfect with this combo!
Using the MC-11 should give you good results.
tamron 100-400 + mc 11 can AF?
Yes - how quickly depends on the light. In good light, quite fast. In poor light, expect some pulsing before achieving focus lock.
thank you very much. my english is very poor. tamron 100-400 have tripod mount ring ,so i want tamron not sigma
Just remember that you have to purchase the tripod mount separately.
Merry Christmas to my Serbian friend!
Yes we do
Although this posting is a year ago, I still enjoy watching it and I found it very informative. This behavior was also shown in Maarten Heilbron
's review on this particular adapter.
That’s possible. There’s definitely different behavior with every lens.
Thank you for putting this out there. I was think of getting both the Metabones and Sigma MC11 but now you saved me 400 bucks!! Thank you!!
My pleasure.
Dustin Abbott, my Nikon 6/2.8, Nikon 13/5.6, rare world's first ATG Nikon 13/5.0 (modified) and ATG Canon EF200/1.2 (modified) work well on Vello Accelerator adapter onto Sony A6500.
1. 6mm @ 2.0
2. 13mm @ 5.0
3. 13mm @ 4.0 (13.84mm @ F3.55)
4. 200mm @ 0.9 (213mm @ F0.85)
The best is using it with the ATG Zeiss N210/0.03 (modified for EF).
That's good to hear.
I wish I had snow to play in :V
We’ve got plenty for you.
Gr8 as always
Found a sigma mc 11 clone for ef mount af zooms
Ok in daylight like reel thing
Will velo help me. Probably need tp try
“Milage my very”.... how true
My canons are af zooms older models
Sold my canon modern pro 70-200 2.8
I'm not sure how the Vello would compare to your current adapter, but at least its lower risk in terms of price.
This adopter issue has recently surfaced since 3rd party lens makers are not producing lenses as they once did for Sony, Nikon ,Canon camera bodies etc.adopters don't work....
Tamron and Tokina have just announced E mount lenses, and Sigma will by the end of the month.
please, sigma makes a art lens but you must use their adopter with it for the E mount, they now make nothing for the "A" that is new technology, either does Tamron.....Tokina lenses you can keep !......
A mount is probably never going to receive third party support again. It doesn't even get first party support.
Adapt a 40mm 2.8 pancake Canon
It works fine.
Very good review, but your mileage may vary.. Haha..
It does seem that people get varying results with adapters. Then again, people have varying standards.
sooooooo, forget using an adopter, save your money.....
I disagree. I love having the option of using my EF lenses on Sony bodies. You just have to be realistic about the strengths and shortcomings of adapting lenses.
Not when these lenses are so expensive!........putting adopters out that do not do the full job is inexcusable .....This is a problem Sony had much to do with creating when they throw away the "A" mount......
what comment would that be?
I don't really know why Canon and Nikon haven't embraced IBIS more; Sony does that very, very well.
adopters are for people who have lots of time to waste cause they do not work . big waste of money,. time and energy......
You lost me at Sony.
LOL!
