    Thank you so much for performing and posting these tests. I’ve been searching for exactly this review for a few days and couldn’t find what I was looking for until this popped up on fstoppers. I’ve given up on Canon bodies, but, like many, I have a bunch of great glass. Not going to waste years of my life waiting to see if they make a D850/a7RIII equivalent in 2021 while the rest of the industry is innovating like crazy. Now I know I can use Sony bodies going forward. This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.

    I have to agree the 35LII is amazing as well! Couldn't believe the wide open sharpness accross the frame; I photographed by mistake a group of 10-12 people in a straight line accross the frame, at 1.4 and damn everyone is TACK sharp!

    Thank you! I have the A7Rii and without eye AF I was considering selling canon glass.
    Knowing it will work on new body I'll keep it THANK YOU you saved me some cash.

    BOOOOOM Mind BLOWN!!!! Ive been Super anti using canon glass with sony cameras because I have had awful experiences with the auto focus so this is good to know! Thanks for posting this! Did you have to do a firmware update on the metabones for it to work right?

    • @TheBrotographer
      @TheBrotographer  6 лет назад +2

      Yeah it’s a way to slowly transition. Native glass will always be faster, but this is now a decent option for portrait shooters.

    I've been torn between the R3 and the M4 because I already have canon glass but LOVE Sony's functionality and the only thing I was concerned about was the AF. This makes me feel like I have nothing to worry about so Sony it is

  • @LuisGabrielPhotography
    @LuisGabrielPhotography 6 лет назад +15

    To clarify you DO get Eye AF with the A7R 2 and metabones but only in Advanced mode which uses CDAF instead of PDAF. Thanks for the video!

    • @TheBrotographer
      @TheBrotographer  6 лет назад +1

      Correct, but for all intents and purposes, it’s basically unusable.

    • @LuisGabrielPhotography
      @LuisGabrielPhotography 6 лет назад +7

      Oh I disagree about that. I used it with my Sigma 135mm art for pro work and it worked just fine. Sure it pulses which is a bit annoying but if you set your focus to focus priority then my hit rate was VERY high. But of course, the R3 with PDAF just blows it out of the water now. Love this camera!

    Wow this is great info to know! Thank you for this!
    One thing you might consider that I've noticed other RUclipsrs do is record their camera screen with an external video recorder like the Atomos. That way you don't have to set up a second camera to record your screen when making test videos. Thought I'd mention this in case you weren't aware of this option. Otherwise, your content is already great and informational!

    This looks great. Do you think AF works in the real world? A wedding dance, reportage, non posed pictures, dimmed lights (iso 6400, 1/100s, f2 stuff)? The situations you even feel the 1Dx sometimes struggeling?

    it focuses and track the eye. But off center points eye or manual are focusing back of front on MC-11. The only point that hit focus is the central one. I wonder if off center points are better on metabones? Kit is A7iii and 85mm 1.2L ii

    On this Sony A7r III 3 an important thing is missing which is the color inversion or negative. Very useful for reproducing color or black and white negatives. Many photographers have these negatives in stock and could digitize them. I hope this message reaches Mr. Sony's ears.

    Which adapter are you using?
    I have the Metabones and I am seeing a lot of focus hunting with everything from the 70-200, 50 1.2, 85 1.2, 24-105. All L glass and all in a reasonably lit room. I just went to manual focus because it just wouldn't lock on reliably.

    Thank you for this video. It appears that I'm a late entry to this 2 yr old video. I've done quite a bit or research on the Sony a7riii... thinking, pondering. So. based on a lot of balanced, positive articles and videos, I've ordered it - the Sony a7riii. I'll sell my Canon 5d3 but keep my L glass, and based on this and other reviews on the Metabones V, I've already order another used but great Canon L lens that I've needed. That was the clincher for me to keep my L lenses but still have ths Sony auto/eye tracking - crucial for me. I'll probably transition at some point to Sony native glass, once price points decline a bit. I've notice also that a lot (if not most) new Sony glass has/have no manual focus ring or aperture ring(s). So I like having those 'rings' in my current Canon lenses to fall back on. Thanks again. Cheers.

    EF200/2.8L II w/ the Metabones IV on an my a6500 (so I assume a7RIII too): perfect eye-AF and it focuses faster than it did on my Canon bodies ;-) Also quite good on my a7II.
    EF300/4L on the a6500 focuses very fast also (even w/ 1.4x) but has problems tracking into the corners.

    Very interesting! Could you do more of a landscape shoot with the Canon and Tamron glass? I'd love to see corner sharpness at something like f/9 or f/11. I've heard some people say with adapted glass the flange distance causes corner sharpness issues for landscapes which are not noticeable on shallow depth of field portrait shots.

    I did test tracking a7r3 BIF (with sigma 150-600) and my running child with 85L and results were not good (Metabones iv) with 85L. The results were better with a9 and 85L where I found it autofocuses better than Canon 5dm3 with 85L. Sigma 150-600 with a7r3 for BIF did pretty good. Slow moving objects same results as you show - it works.

      Dmitry Brodsky 85L really isn't that good when you are tracking a person moving towards you. The Sigma 85mm ART works better in regards of autofocus.

    • @DmitryBrodsky007

      True, except in my test (you can see in one of my A9 videos, that same 85L tracked successfully my wife walking toward and away at an average speed)) it worked somewhat decent with A9 for tracking her. However with A7R3 so far it could not match its performance with A9. I have not tested the Sigma Art 85 so cannot say anything

    Good test I also have a lot of canon glass and the addition of eye-autofocus will encurage me to possible keep some. However on my a6300 I get zero autofocus on canon lens when shooting video (big drag). Does the face recognition and autofocus now work in video mode with A7RIII? Also I have not seen any tests of Sigma MC-11 adaptor with A&RIII and canon glass to know if it works better with canon glass. Thanks

    I had a terrible time using the 70-200 canon with the sigma mc-11 adapter. After a few shots it would my focus whatsoever and I would have to put the lens in manual focus and then back to auto focus and then it would work for a few shots and then I would repeat the process. I wonder what’s going on and if the adapter just needs an update or something

    Hi, I was on B&H site and reviewing the metabones adapter and there are many negative reviews that the AF does not respond. Is there any reason some people are having a great experience and others aren't? Does it have anything to do with the series of lens (i.e. L Lens mark 1 vs mark 2)?

  • @rainerflucke1135

    I bet all of Canon's next cameras (with or without mirror) have Eye AF (even the entry mirrorless m50 has it) - and you can use canon glass on them :-) - i like the usability , the handling and all this so much more on the canon bodies so far.

      I don’t have the A7III anymore, but the adapter really makes a difference. I’ve never had those lenses so I’d do a bit more research on their compatibility.

    Hello!
    today the mkiv its discontinued, now is mkv, but, this one is the normal mkiv? or the ultra 0.71x that is more expensive that the normal??
    I'm asking because I don't know if I should buy the "Canon EF Lens to Sony E Mount T Speed Booster ULTRA 0.71x II" or just the "Canon EF Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Mark V)" this is really cheaper

    Hi! I’m considering investing in a mirrorless although I’m already a Sony user (99m2), but it is because I want the Sigma 60-600 because I’m covering a lot of Soccer games for the School in working for. I was having a lot of doubts about AF with adapters and how fast they would respond in real life with action shots. Do you have any experience with some really fast sports like soccer or basketball with the 7r3 and the Metabones 4?

    • @TheBrotographer
      @TheBrotographer  5 лет назад

      I definitely wouldn’t adapt lenses for sports. Go native for sure.

    What a pity that I sold all of my beloved Canon L glass (which included the 35, 50, 85 and 135 among others) and switched to... Nikon. When I did it, Sony cameras were just starting and adapters were pretty primitive. At the end, I happened to switch again, now to Sony, and I'm really missing my former Canon glass, especially when I see how well they could perform (AF wise, I mean). I envy you! :)

    I have been using the Metabones V to connect my Sigma 85mm and Sigma 35mm Art lenses to the a7riii. Eye autofocus keeps up well, but I'm finding that the camera locks up every so often when I click the shutter. I have to turn off the camera in these cases. I've found that the camera goes down 3-4 times in a half hour window (around 200 clicks).
    I also want to confirm, my Metabones adapter is displaying a blue light when it is connected. Is the blue light telling me that the adapter is in 'green' mode?

    Great! Thanks so much. Any one know if the Canon 35mm L 1.4 (version 1) works as well as the version 2 with this combi? It is my favourite piece of glass of ALL time and I have missed it since moving to Sony. The Sony Distagon 35mm 1.4 has not won me over at all.
