Thanks! It's great to see how well this works with Canon L series glass. I'm wondering if you've looked closely at the edge to edge sharpness with the Metabones adapter? Any vignetting or loss of sharpness at the edges?
Really appreciate you doing this video! Have you tried the Canon 24-70 f2.8 II with this adapter? I am not really sold on the Sony 24-70 GM and would like a better alternative to it. Thanks for showing the 85mm f1.2 L II. Glad to know that works well with it.
I have to agree the 35LII is amazing as well! Couldn't believe the wide open sharpness accross the frame; I photographed by mistake a group of 10-12 people in a straight line accross the frame, at 1.4 and damn everyone is TACK sharp!
Thank you so much for performing and posting these tests. I’ve been searching for exactly this review for a few days and couldn’t find what I was looking for until this popped up on fstoppers. I’ve given up on Canon bodies, but, like many, I have a bunch of great glass. Not going to waste years of my life waiting to see if they make a D850/a7RIII equivalent in 2021 while the rest of the industry is innovating like crazy. Now I know I can use Sony bodies going forward. This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
Could you elaborate (or maybe even make a video) on the AF performance in low light with adapted canon lenses? especially the canon 24-70 f2,8L II. Thats something where the Canon 1dx II realy shines and an important feature in my opinion. Thank you!
BOOOOOM Mind BLOWN!!!! Ive been Super anti using canon glass with sony cameras because I have had awful experiences with the auto focus so this is good to know! Thanks for posting this! Did you have to do a firmware update on the metabones for it to work right?
Forsure. If you need an idea for a video I have a request! Can you do some video testing with auto focus and all that jazz with canon glass and the a7riii??
Which adapter are you using? I have the Metabones and I am seeing a lot of focus hunting with everything from the 70-200, 50 1.2, 85 1.2, 24-105. All L glass and all in a reasonably lit room. I just went to manual focus because it just wouldn't lock on reliably.
The Brotographer thanks. I visited your site and found the info there. I’m still not sure why I am getting all the focus hunting. I am running all the latest firmware.
I'm trying to factor the 114 dislikes? I mean there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. This video 100% confirms the adaptor works so what's the hate? Mf's quick to hate and not even stick around to discuss why. great video man!
Thank you! I have the A7Rii and without eye AF I was considering selling canon glass. Knowing it will work on new body I'll keep it THANK YOU you saved me some cash.
Never mind the long test, I loved the way you tested the lenses and how nicely shared your results with the world, I learnt a lot! Thank you so much Ross and God bless you man!
it focuses and track the eye. But off center points eye or manual are focusing back of front on MC-11. The only point that hit focus is the central one. I wonder if off center points are better on metabones? Kit is A7iii and 85mm 1.2L ii
Do u know if this adapter works just as well with the a7iii since the af on that camera is the same as the 7riii. Seriously thinking about leaving canon bodies.
Which settings are configured for the metabones adapter could you please give much info as possible. I remember when doing the firmware update on Mark IV various options are available to configure.
this really helps for the ppl with a lot canon glas and considering getting a sony body. Do you have any canon mount sigma art lens to compare as well?
cano you test with the canon ef 35 mm f2 older version because i have the a7c and also couple of canon lens 35 mm ,85mm,24-105 f 4 lens can you please test those for me by providing a video?
I've been torn between the R3 and the M4 because I already have canon glass but LOVE Sony's functionality and the only thing I was concerned about was the AF. This makes me feel like I have nothing to worry about so Sony it is
Oh I disagree about that. I used it with my Sigma 135mm art for pro work and it worked just fine. Sure it pulses which is a bit annoying but if you set your focus to focus priority then my hit rate was VERY high. But of course, the R3 with PDAF just blows it out of the water now. Love this camera!
Great video and great news. I’m in the process of switching from the 5D MK4 to the A7RIII. I have a lot of Canon L and none L glass that I was going to trade into B&H. Any chance you can test the 50 1.2?
Very interesting and encouraging. Which settings did you use with your metabones adapter (green mode or advanced?) and the camera AF (e.g. wide and phase detection or contrast detection)?
Good test I also have a lot of canon glass and the addition of eye-autofocus will encurage me to possible keep some. However on my a6300 I get zero autofocus on canon lens when shooting video (big drag). Does the face recognition and autofocus now work in video mode with A7RIII? Also I have not seen any tests of Sigma MC-11 adaptor with A&RIII and canon glass to know if it works better with canon glass. Thanks
Thank you for this video! Been looking for this for a while. I have the 16-35mm f4, does it work as well as the 35mm 1.4 you showed in the video? Also, how is the corner sharpness of the 16-35 f4, I believe there were some problems with that on the A7R II. Lastly, have you tried any Sigma ART lenses with the metabones on the A7R III?
Great video! Btw, does the eye focus control works on the Canon L series Mark 1...? ( 70-200 L f/2.8, 24-70 L f/2.8, 100-400 L f/4.5-5.6 )?? Thank you very much.
Hi, I was on B&H site and reviewing the metabones adapter and there are many negative reviews that the AF does not respond. Is there any reason some people are having a great experience and others aren't? Does it have anything to do with the series of lens (i.e. L Lens mark 1 vs mark 2)?
This looks great. Do you think AF works in the real world? A wedding dance, reportage, non posed pictures, dimmed lights (iso 6400, 1/100s, f2 stuff)? The situations you even feel the 1Dx sometimes struggeling?
I have been using the Metabones V to connect my Sigma 85mm and Sigma 35mm Art lenses to the a7riii. Eye autofocus keeps up well, but I'm finding that the camera locks up every so often when I click the shutter. I have to turn off the camera in these cases. I've found that the camera goes down 3-4 times in a half hour window (around 200 clicks). I also want to confirm, my Metabones adapter is displaying a blue light when it is connected. Is the blue light telling me that the adapter is in 'green' mode?
I've been waiting for a test of the 85 1.2 with eye af. Thank you so much for doing this. How much light did you have there? It looked pretty dark when moving back. How does the Sony compare with canon glass overall. The 70-200 2.8 is ii looked pretty slow compared to my Canon 5d iii.
Very useful info. Now does the body give back panel focus info (the focus box) when used with Canon manual focus TS lenses focused by hand? This would be helpful for me to know for landscape work.
Ok so if you put the 85mm Canon lens on manual and racked it around does the rectangle appear when you hit sharp focus? That's how my 5D2 delivered "focus established" bright rectangle feedback display with the TS (which are non motorized lenses).
ok we have the green square on the monitor but can you confirm the photos are focused right on the eye? i mean on monitor while editing the, in LR o PS o C1P or whatelse! thank you!
Hi , could you make this same test but with the Sony A7III? did you ttested Sigma MC-11 , any comment? I am canon user and this is pretty imprtant to decide if I migrate to sony. thanks.
I had a terrible time using the 70-200 canon with the sigma mc-11 adapter. After a few shots it would my focus whatsoever and I would have to put the lens in manual focus and then back to auto focus and then it would work for a few shots and then I would repeat the process. I wonder what’s going on and if the adapter just needs an update or something
Is this any good for the Canon 300mm f2.8LIS its the mark1? if it is any chance the canon converters will also work? if it does work I'm going with Sony if not and I have to sell my Canon gear then I'm going for the Nikon 850.
Would you happen to know how the Sony A7iii works with the Canon 70-200 2.8L, not version ii? I'd keep this lense if it would work for sports at full capacity of the Sony A7iii....What adapter would be recommended for this lense? Thanks
Hi! I’m considering investing in a mirrorless although I’m already a Sony user (99m2), but it is because I want the Sigma 60-600 because I’m covering a lot of Soccer games for the School in working for. I was having a lot of doubts about AF with adapters and how fast they would respond in real life with action shots. Do you have any experience with some really fast sports like soccer or basketball with the 7r3 and the Metabones 4?
Hello I am Canon shooter and I am looking to move to Sony but want to keep my canon glasses.. What's the best converter for the Canon lenses on Sony? Is it Metabone mark 5 or the sigma mc 11?
Hi hi.. very nice video.. many of other video did not test lenses correctly like you did.. good job. A question: I have 25-105 f4 L first series on a 7iii, I tried both metabones 4 and 5 but the result is this: the metabones 4 allow all the 5 kind ok focus (AFS AFC.. ) but the focus don't works at all.. it's strange.. did I meke some mistake? ; And the metabones 5 works well but in the test of tracking.. the green Square follow well the subject.. but the pics are out of focus.. did make still here some mistakes?? Thanks thanks... If someone can help me. Thanks.
damn! you tested all the canon lenses i currently have.. interesting,.. would you trade an old and trusty 1dx for a a7riii? for wedding general and wedding purposes?
Hi Bro! EHm, I tested my Metabones on the Sony this week and had a problem.. The Adapter loses it´s black "hair" from the inner lining, making the sensor SUPER dirty! Happens also to you? Or is my Metabones copy odd? THX
Just curious...would you happen to know how the 24-70L and 70-200L (older versions) would work on the A7III?
How well does eye autofocus work when there are multiple people in the frame? Is there a way to tell it who to focus on?
can you give me the link of this adapter ??

Thank you very much for the kind words. I’m glad that this helped you. I hope it gives your Canon lenses new life.
Great work!!! Is it a real 1.2 because the camera said 1.3
What adaptor did you used for this test? it is a great video.. thanks
The Metabones Mark 4
Could you elaborate (or maybe even make a video) on the AF performance in low light with adapted canon lenses? especially the canon 24-70 f2,8L II. Thats something where the Canon 1dx II realy shines and an important feature in my opinion. Thank you!
I don’t ha e that lens unfortunately.
Does the Metabones V focus better than IV?
BOOOOOM Mind BLOWN!!!! Ive been Super anti using canon glass with sony cameras because I have had awful experiences with the auto focus so this is good to know! Thanks for posting this! Did you have to do a firmware update on the metabones for it to work right?
You’re welcome! No this firmware is several months old.
Super cool! Im highly considering buying this now. Ive never wanted to fully switch to sony because sony glass is so expensive!
Yeah it’s a way to slowly transition. Native glass will always be faster, but this is now a decent option for portrait shooters.
Forsure. If you need an idea for a video I have a request! Can you do some video testing with auto focus and all that jazz with canon glass and the a7riii??
You don’t get video AF.
But which adapter you used??
Metabones Mark IV.
Gret vid...
I have to switch to sony.. but wanna use my canon L glass.. wts ur final opinion
Metabones Mark IV.
The Brotographer thanks. I visited your site and found the info there. I’m still not sure why I am getting all the focus hunting. I am running all the latest firmware.
same here with my IV Metabones and latest firmware (Canon 135/2, Sigma 50/1.4 Art)
For eye af u have to keep pressing the ael button? Or keep it pressed down?
Does the AF-C works great on video too? Can you test it out for us? Thanks for the video!
There is no auto Focus when shooting video.
Great video! Answered some of the things I was wondering! It doesn’t work for video, right? Cheers from Japan!
Should the model move forward and back for this test?
I'm trying to factor the 114 dislikes? I mean there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. This video 100% confirms the adaptor works so what's the hate? Mf's quick to hate and not even stick around to discuss why. great video man!
Haha thanks for the kind words. It’s easy to sit behind a keyboard and criticize people. I always appreciate positive comments!
Just got this camera. Have you go try my canon 50mm 1.4 and tamron 70 200mm g2
Thank you! I have the A7Rii and without eye AF I was considering selling canon glass.
Knowing it will work on new body I'll keep it THANK YOU you saved me some cash.
You’re welcome!
Never mind the long test, I loved the way you tested the lenses and how nicely shared your results with the world, I learnt a lot! Thank you so much Ross and God bless you man!
Thank you!
Thanks. I was previously adding up the value of my Canon L glass to see which sony glass i could get. Im re-evaluating this idea now.
Thank you for sharing. Do you have a list of all compatible Canon lenses supporting eye-focus function?
Unfortunately I don’t.
Thank you.
Great review, no time wasted, thanks
You’re welcome!
Need help. I have the Sony 7RIII and the Canon 85mm F/1.2 and the camera says (lens is not attached correctly or is not supported.
I'm shooting a lot of video and I have a few L series lenses. I want 4k video. Would you go with the a7iii over the 5d mark Iv
Yeah the A7III all day.
The Brotographer thanks 👍 I subbed
Thanks so much Anthony!
it focuses and track the eye. But off center points eye or manual are focusing back of front on MC-11. The only point that hit focus is the central one. I wonder if off center points are better on metabones? Kit is A7iii and 85mm 1.2L ii
Do you have any test of autofocus for video? Thanks!
Do u know if this adapter works just as well with the a7iii since the af on that camera is the same as the 7riii. Seriously thinking about leaving canon bodies.
I don’t have that camera, but my assumption is that it works just as well.
Broto, at least for portrait the Canon 85 F/.1.2 works better with Sony A7RIII than any Canon camera at f/.1.2???
I’d have to agree.
Work fine on canon cameras in live view with duble pixel af :)
Gustavo Ulloa , I agree with so much that I sold my one.
But, it won't track eyes like that....
HAHA that's sad!!
Which settings are configured for the metabones adapter could you please give much info as possible. I remember when doing the firmware update on Mark IV various options are available to configure.
this really helps for the ppl with a lot canon glas and considering getting a sony body. Do you have any canon mount sigma art lens to compare as well?
I hope to test that soon.
cano you test with the canon ef 35 mm f2 older version because i have the a7c and also couple of canon lens 35 mm ,85mm,24-105 f 4 lens can you please test those for me by providing a video?
Does anyone know if the Canon 50mm f1.2 works with the Metabones 5 on the Sony A7r III ? Thanks!
Thx a lot, very useful! Was metabones in green mode? I didnt think green gave you eye af....
Whatever the regular mode is is what it was in.
I've been torn between the R3 and the M4 because I already have canon glass but LOVE Sony's functionality and the only thing I was concerned about was the AF. This makes me feel like I have nothing to worry about so Sony it is
Michael, now several yrs after your comment, how did the Sony camera work with your Canon lenses with regard to eye autofocus? thx
To clarify you DO get Eye AF with the A7R 2 and metabones but only in Advanced mode which uses CDAF instead of PDAF. Thanks for the video!
Correct, but for all intents and purposes, it’s basically unusable.
How did you get your aperture to change using the wheel on the back?
HEY, I HAVE A QUESTION DID U TEST THE AUTO PHOCO FOR VIDEO? I want to buy that body and I have Canon lenses. Really cool Review
Hey I released a video on that here. ruclips.net/video/2xMj5b-gKyA/видео.html
Great video and great news. I’m in the process of switching from the 5D MK4 to the A7RIII. I have a lot of Canon L and none L glass that I was going to trade into B&H. Any chance you can test the 50 1.2?
Unfortunately I don’t have that lens anymore.
do they all track that well in video mode also?
No, I’ve released other videos on that.
I've been looking for a review like this since the a7riii came out! Thanks for doing this.
I’m happy it helped!
Very interesting and encouraging. Which settings did you use with your metabones adapter (green mode or advanced?) and the camera AF (e.g. wide and phase detection or contrast detection)?
I was in green mode, wide area continuous AF.
About time these adapters are starting to work! Yay!
Great test! Thank you very much! Sad thing is that this seems to perform better than the same lenses on my 5D IV
I'm seriously considering switching to Sony. Did you test any other lenses like 85mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4?
And how is the focus in dim light?
Great video, exactly info I was waiting for. Have you tried Sigma MC11 adapter with this setup? Thanx.
I haven’t yet.
I did test eye focus with MC11 adapter. I think it autofocuses better than I thought. Here is my video:
ruclips.net/video/kQrYvL85Xj8/видео.html
Good test I also have a lot of canon glass and the addition of eye-autofocus will encurage me to possible keep some. However on my a6300 I get zero autofocus on canon lens when shooting video (big drag). Does the face recognition and autofocus now work in video mode with A7RIII? Also I have not seen any tests of Sigma MC-11 adaptor with A&RIII and canon glass to know if it works better with canon glass. Thanks
No AF in video still. I’m trying to get an MC-11 to test as well.
Walter here for some lenses ruclips.net/video/aFkvURCqJBY/видео.html
What about 24-70 2.8 Mark 1 and 70-200 Mark 1
For Canon glasses, do they have eye-af in off-center areas as well?
For most lenses yes.
will a 50mm 1.8 stm work decently or well with the 5th generation adaptor on a a7r3 ??
Thank you for this video! Been looking for this for a while. I have the 16-35mm f4, does it work as well as the 35mm 1.4 you showed in the video? Also, how is the corner sharpness of the 16-35 f4, I believe there were some problems with that on the A7R II. Lastly, have you tried any Sigma ART lenses with the metabones on the A7R III?
He says in the video towards the end that the 16-35 f/4 works fine.
Thanks for the video man it was very helpful!
Wow! That gives me a lot of hope switching to Sony as I am currently using a Canon mount Tamron G2 24-70mm F2.8 IS which I absolutely love.
Have you tested with metabones V?
Just the IV. I've been told that the V has a better build and focus hold, but has the same features as the IV.
I have Metabones V with R2...it's good but never the same as native lenses.
If the 1DX struggles, this will too. This setup is going to excel in portraits.
can you pls find out if the sony 6500 does it too ? thank u
How are the adapted lenses working in low light focusing? I’m thinking of using some for a wedding but am afraid they will fail me
I've been waiting for a test of the 85 1.2 with eye af. Thank you so much for doing this. How much light did you have there? It looked pretty dark when moving back. How does the Sony compare with canon glass overall. The 70-200 2.8 is ii looked pretty slow compared to my Canon 5d iii.
does it work the same with sony a7iii? and is it also work the same for video mode?
Very useful info. Now does the body give back panel focus info (the focus box) when used with Canon manual focus TS lenses focused by hand? This would be helpful for me to know for landscape work.
Unfortunately I don’t own a single tilt shift lens lol.
Ok so if you put the 85mm Canon lens on manual and racked it around does the rectangle appear when you hit sharp focus? That's how my 5D2 delivered "focus established" bright rectangle feedback display with the TS (which are non motorized lenses).
Does this work just as well with the Sigma MC 11 adapter ?
awesome, but what about AF for Video? with canon 24-70 2.8 mkii
AF in video is possible. But not very good.
is the adapter make lenses work perfectly of the lens it self? like i have canon 100mm and 24-105mm are they will work with eye tracking?
Is it the a7iii or the metsbones adapter?
May I ask how did you customized changing the aperture with the rotating dial ? Does it work on Sony a7iii?
Thanks,
It’s just a setting in the button setup.
Hmmm, I wonder what you’ll do once the Sigma ART Sony native E-mount lenses come out?
Do you have the mc-11 adapter? Can you test out some canon lenses with the sigma adapter? Thank you!
I did test eye focus with MC11. I think it autofocuses better than I thought. Here is my video:
ruclips.net/video/kQrYvL85Xj8/видео.html
ok we have the green square on the monitor but can you confirm the photos are focused right on the eye? i mean on monitor while editing the, in LR o PS o C1P or whatelse! thank you!
For sure!
Is there any feature A7RIII cannot do with Canon glass yet? Also I really would like to see them support Nikon glass.
Hi , could you make this same test but with the Sony A7III? did you ttested Sigma MC-11 , any comment? I am canon user and this is pretty imprtant to decide if I migrate to sony.
thanks.
What settings do you use for the A7r3, af priority ?
Thank you! I have three of these lenses and am buying the A7R III. I'm getting a Sigma adapter, so hopefully it will still work too...
Pls let us know if it did? Tnx in advance.
Hi, Could you share me link to metabone MarkIV, you did use in this video review?, thank you
God bless Sony for eye autofocus
It misses it a lot of the times even when it supposedly was eyefocusing
I definitely wouldn’t adapt lenses for sports. Go native for sure.
Thanks for this review! Really helpful and everything was on point!
Absolutely. Thanks for watching!
Why u use shutter 1/80 mate?
Thanks.
grammar
Hi
Very very instructive vidéo. Thanks!
Question: have you tried the sigma mc 11 adapter? It’s much cheaper that the metabone ones....
Sergio
Yeah I’ve tried it. It works better with Sigma and Tamron glass. The Metabones works better with Canon glass for the most part.
damn! you tested all the canon lenses i currently have.. interesting,.. would you trade an old and trusty 1dx for a a7riii? for wedding general and wedding purposes?
In a heartbeat!
Did you use green mode or advanced mode for eye-AF with the metabones? I assume advanced mode, but just confirming.
Green mode.
Ok, that’s weird, since Metabones says you can’t get eye AF inn mode. Good to know
They don't advertise it. Sony allowed for it on the A7R3.
Will this also work on the a9 with the Metabones Mark IV adapter?
Absolutely.
Does this also apply to Video?
Thank you very much for this great video! Do you have chance to test tamron 24-70 and 70-200 g2 adapted? Thanks
I hope to have that in about 2 weeks
amazing! thank you! What about video AF?
Check out my channel, I released another video on that.
Can we get the same performance from Sigma mc11?
Do you have a 28-300 to test out
Why is the camera not showing f/1.2?
Hi Bro! EHm, I tested my Metabones on the Sony this week and had a problem.. The Adapter loses it´s black "hair" from the inner lining, making the sensor SUPER dirty! Happens also to you? Or is my Metabones copy odd? THX
How is video autofocus on the A7R3 with non native glass ?
