Hey Philip, honest question. I felt as though every review talked extensively about the ISO and Focus (which I admittingly also talked about, because how could you not), but didn't talk at all about design, or about the things that still weren't great. Yes, the design is identical to that of the A7R3, but if that camera didn't interest the viewer, then this would be their first experience with the re-design. So, my pitch was "at this price point" here are the things that matter most to me - and that most people seem to be glossing over or not addressing at all. - D
No recording limit after patch - I used it on three different ones, works like a charm. it is actually just an app (just like "sony remote") to be installed (and, at choice, deleted) on the cam. The patch is called "Open Memories Tweak"

Yep. Just for shits & giggles i checked what would happen if i sold my D810 and go with a A7R3 (i need those extra MPs for detailed/dense Tokyo Urbanscapes) - but to get my most used lenses in Sony format ? 14-24/2.8, 70-200/2.8 - 50/1.2
@We McLaughlins like sigma and tamaron best thing about this is you can use your old apc lens until you can afford a full frame lense yes you will only be using half of the sensor doing this but it gets the job done if your working on a budget.
The 29:59 Limit is not because they want to sell their video cameras. Its because a video camera in Europe costs import tax and a photo camera doesn't. The spec they decide if it is a video camera or not is if it can record 30 min of video in one.
Doesn't Canon just close the file and automatically open a new one (without dropping a frame)? That's my understanding at least. Seems like a viable workaround- why can't Sony do the same thing?
Canon do that for spanning files exceeding 4GB, not for exceeding 30mins. One is a limit on file sizes using FAT32, the other has to do with EU import tariffs. PS Sony do spanning files, but for anything using XAVC-S they insist on using ExFAT cards which don't have a 4GB file limit (and therefore don't have to span).
Stellar camera. I upgraded from an a7R to the a7iii and im really pleased. Adapting canon glass with my metabonez mk4 t is a dream (i hear its even better with the sigma mc-11). Focus is now so much more intelligent. One thing I wish I could do is set mode / settings defaults for video and photo separately (Picture Profile settings and focus mode in particular). I shoot both photos and video from photo mode, and have issues with the focus mode from time to time. Iʻd also like it if pressing the record button could pop a picture profile on just for the shooting of that clip, and return to default for taking photos.
From my understanding Sony didn't add a joystick bc other cameras had them, rather they added it bc their consumers wanted it. Sony is great at listening to their consumers and adjusting their products to meet their needs, which is another reason people are switching from canon and Nikon. Also the same consumers want dials and buttons to be able to adjust setting on the fly without having to look at the screen or go through menu option settings each time. Would setting adjustments via gestures have been a nice add-on? Meh maybe? But definitely not in replacement of physical dials. Car companies learned this lesson as consumers at first thought full touch screens were a cool idea bc they were the latest and greatest thing. However, in reality people hated having certain dials and buttons eliminated bc they could no longer reach, feel, and adjust, they had to look (take eyes of road), focus (on the screen not the road), and adjust. I personally like my high end camera to feel like a camera not a point and shoot. Opinions?
Previous jog wheel/stick didn’t move the focus around unless you mapped a key to press first, then move the point, then set it...was a pain when changing it often and if you accidentally clicked one of he sides then there you go changing iso it one of the other functions...I’ve had lots of find with this lol
Sea Panther "Sony is great at listening at their customers"? Really?Took them years to implement a semifunctional touch screen! Only on a few cameras of course! How about articulating screen? Nope! Functional menu? Nope! Lenses much? Nope! That's Sony...
Sea Panther well, I kinda agree with everyone here. Personally I can live without a touchscreen, however the menu system is something that I can't imagine how it can be so hard to just reorganise. I'd even be fine with the old menu system that we had from the a7 and a6000 till the a7rii, if they'd just reorganised the functions and grouped for example focus setting together. The next big complaint I have is also the hdmi port, they should at least put a mini-hdmi port, instead of that micro-hdmi port, I've already killed about five or so hdmi cables on that stupid port. And then there are the buttons. I used a friend's canon 1dsiii a while back for an event shooting and after switching back to the a7 series those sony cameras felt like 20$ toys. The buttons are mushy, the dials don't really click. Now I wanted to get started on the video features, but then I realized, that there are cameras like the fs5 and fs7 :D. However, I think sony could blow all of their competition out of the universe, if they'd release the fs5 with a dci 4k full frame size bsi sensor and ibis and good autofocus (the one from the a7rii or so), even while keeping everything else the same (codec, body, etc.). And I'm fairly confident they could do it for less than 10k$, although they wouldn't, because pro-video-cam-market haha. Cheers
The 30 minute record thing is to do with a rule in the EU (and possibly) other countries where going over that would class it as a camcorder. That would add, as you rightly point out, taxes etc on the camera. The EU rule I believe expires next year and may not be renewed so potentially the 30 minute thing might come to and end soon. I really hope so.
Yup - exactly right. Here is the FujiRumors article about it: www.fujirumors.com/yes-eu-import-duty-reason-fujifilm-x-h1-limited-30-minutes-will-change-2018-2019/
Pretty sure that is also a rule in the US, and I don't know how much the tax is, but I'm not sure if I would want to pay significantly more for this camera so that it could record more than 30 minutes of video if I meant to use it for, you know, taking pictures, which used to be the primary purpose of all cameras but these days who knows.
I have carried both my a7s and my a6000 like that from day 1. I have big hands too and the fingers just sit perfectly on the hand grip, never dropped one YET !!!!!
I was going to buy one of these a7 iii but I heard some people having trouble with the shutters not working after being used for a while so I’m stuck what to buy as lots of cameras I have read up on have had problems with them
I’m still glad I got the A7Riii (got the A7Rii 2 years ago). I’m used to 42mp and couldn’t ever go back to 24. I plan to be happy with it for a few year ahead. I loved the A7Rii, but this is a nice improvement.
Dale, this is one of the best assessments I've seen of the A7III to date. I've watched a lot of the Vistek teams videos and I really like the Vistek teams' down-to-earth, practical, transparent, honest, and accurate reviews. I get so tired of Manufacturer-spiff/affiliate-link incentive driven, fan-boy RUclips videos that just recite the spec sheet back to me that I could scream. I've got some questions for you to consider when you get one for real to test longer term: 1) how is the weather resistance on the A7III? Both Imaging Resource and Roger Cicala at LensRentals have demonstrated, to put it mildly, that the weather resistance of the A7RIII leaves *a lot to be desired*, and that bottom plate of the A7RIII has no weather sealing at all, so if you carry your camera around in the rain on a Black Rapid strap with the bottom plate exposed, you're going to be in a lot of trouble. Also, and this is likely more relevant to stills photography than video, but do you know if Sony has strengthened/stiffended the frame to be able to accomodate long, HEAVY, fast telephoto primes like the forthcoming Sony G Master 400 f/2.8? I've seen virtually nothing about this point, and I have considerable concerns that the lens mount is stiff and strong enough to support a torsional load like this. The reason Fuji made the body on the X-H1 larger and considerably thicker, stronger and stiffer, especially around the lens mount area, was to be able to securely and safely mount long, heavy fast telephoto primes, like their to-be released 200mm f/2.0. They even published an engineering white paper about it. I've seen nothing along these lines from Sony.
Hey Stephen! Thanks for your comments! I'd love to be able to test cameras longer, and do weather sealed tests, but I'll likely never be given that opportunity. At least in the same way that that LPTG can do. But, I'm always dubious of mirrorless manufacturers who claim their products are fully weather sealed. You get what you pay for and there also seems to be a lot of parts, which make me suspicious of how well all off that can be sealed. As for the lenses - I have no additional knowledge to share beyond what you already know. I'm often kept in the dark like everyone else, until something lands on my desk (like the A73) and the company is like "here - review this. You have 24 hours." That said, I don't really demand robust mounts for still lenses. This is generally only an issue with big cine lenses, which is why Sony developed the locking E-Mount on their FS7 Mk2. For everything else, it's just assumed you lock the tripod to your lens, not the camera - and the camera's are so light it literally makes zero difference. Thoughts?
Hi Dale, thanks for your reply. To be clear, none of the manufacturers claim that their cameras are weather-sealed, they claim they are "weather-resistant." For example, Canon specifies that their pro 1D-series bodies will withstand a Class 7 rainstorm. The question is a practically significant one rather than a "statistically significant" one: Sony claims the camera is "weather resistant" but suffered significant ingress of water in the Imaging Resource tests. The Olympus OM-D E-M1II by contrast, did not. Also, Roger Cicala has a teardown article on the Sony A7RIII that demonstrates no weather-resistance seals on the bottom deck, hence his concerns. Regarding stiffening of camera frames, I am thinking more of use scenarios for stils sports/racing photojournalism (I do pro motorsports photojournalism, to provide you with some context), where very long, heavy fast prime telephotos need to be mounted safely and securely, in addition to the mounting maintaining the requisite very small optical tolerances. Fuji addressed this specifically by re-engineering the X-H1's frame to be 2X as strong and significantly stiffer (with respect to tension loads) than the X-T2's so as to be able to mount a lens e.g. their forthcoming 200mm f/2.0, which will be long and heavy, along the lines of a Canon 300/2.8. They described the engineering they did to meet these requirements by publishing an engineeirng white paper on the subject. To date, I've seen virtually nothing similar about this from Sony. The A7III body looks to be exactly the same with respect to strength/stiffness as the A7II body. Bottom line: I just don't trust Sony; they have an established track record of cameras and lenses that have significant failure modes from not thinking things through thoroughly and rushing products to market.
Hi James. In order for large sensors to pull A LOT of data off the sensor (like, high frame rates), they have to skip pixel lines. Otherwise the sensor or processor would melt/overheat. This makes distinct "lines" that then conflict with lines in nature (brick walls, hydro lines, etc etc). This causes lots of artefacting with those two lines intersect. Aka moire patterns.
Hi Nandos, yes that's correct. For Slog3 to work at its best DR and noise reduction, Sony fixes the gain at 800iso. As with all mirrorless cameras, you will continue to need ND filters - which are great to have in your kit regardless (IMHO). - D
there is a reason for 30 min recording by the way and this reason applies for all cameras if you noticed, there is a law in which if you increased the limit it will be considered a production gear, something like that, which it will increase some taxes and some other fees which then consumers will find it hard to buy
My main concern is being able to monitor and operate the camera remotely. I can do it for stills on my A6000 using the PlayMemories APP, but I hear that Sony is not making the A7III compatible with PlayMemories. Have you heard anything about this?
I have the a9 and to be honest I'm happy with the touch screen as is. On my product shooting camera it has full touch and I accidentally change camera setting all the time and it isn't awesome. Even when the camera is in my bag, if it gets bumped and wakes up then the bag starts changing the camera setting as I'm walking or running around. Know what I mean? So I'm totally cool with the lack of touch options on my s9
The 30 min record limitation is due to taxation in some countries and is based around the class of equipment being a photographic camera vs a dedicated camcorder which is my understanding at least, so on a global scale it helps that this is so the equipment is the same through the global comunity.
A guy from Panasonic once told me that the record limit does actually refer to taxes because cameras that shot 30min+ are considered video-cameras and or Camcorders which come with higher taxes. On the other hand when Panasonic released the GH4R it was the same camera as the GH4 but with unlimited record time BUT at the same price range as the GH4. Makes you think ....
What I like most about Dale is not the professional review but that he didn't take the bait of all the negative commenters. Just subscribed to his IG for that reason alone; bonus is he's got nice work too!
does anyone know much about the technical durability of mirrorless cameras like the a7iii with respect to heavy usage and take many thousands of individual photos in a single day? I often need to shoot tens of thousands of photos in a day.... i get by with it rotating 2 DSLRs and know i can replace my shutter every 200,000 or so.... but how would mirrorless cameras like the a7iii deal with this? (taking less photos not an option btw haha).
what makes micro hdmi inferior? In my limited experience, the connector is really flimsy, but I'm interested if it's technically and feauture inhibited/limited compared to the full size connector (i.e high frame rates, etc)
It is quite possibly the worst connector ever invented. I could give you a list that's a mile long. Not the least of which is just trying to plug it in. I come from using cinema & broadcast cameras that use SDI & Full HDMI connectors. These are robust, as well as quick to insert & remove. On set, time is money. The more time you futz with stuff, and break stuff, the more money it costs you. Micro HDMIs have done nothing but cost me time and money. I'm passionate about my hate for them. High ISO differences between FF bodies is a meme at this point. There's less than 1 stop of difference, for stills and in RAW, between any of the currently shipping FF bodies when viewed at the same print size. You can verify this using comparison tools like the studio scene tool at DP Review. People make the mistake of pixel peeping cameras with different resolutions and coming to conclusions based on different magnifications. Scale a high ISO A7r II/III, D800/810/850, or 5Dsr image down to 12mp and it will look better than an A7s I/II image. (Similar noise, better sharpness/detail.) And they will look as good as the latest A7 III RAWs. Lots of other real differences to consider between all the cameras. But high ISO is a wash right now. The big difference in high ISO is jumping from crop to any FF. As good as crop has become at high ISO, it still can't touch FF.
im really curious how good 1080 60fps is? since this doesnt do 60fps @ 4k there are scenarios where id like a good slo mo but i dont find the 120fps accecptable since this typically looks soft an "all" cameras out there.
Hi, Thanks for the great video i just have a question, the a6500 1080 video looked rubbish i want to know how the a7iii compares for 1080p quality to something like a7sii is it any good? Thanks
Was the 120fps clip with aliasing shot at the full frame setting or the super 35 crop setting? In another video I’ve seen by Max Yuryev the full frame image had less aliasing than the super 35 crop mode.
Semi quote "You aren't going to use the 100,000 ISO unless you are trying to catch the guy who is stealing your carrots in the middle of the night." LOL
Good camera but it seems ridiculously expensive coming from tougher built, ergonomic DSLRs which probably also focus faster. This one looks like they've improved the grip a little but still behind compared to mid range DSLRs.
Great video! I love the fact that you did address the build aspects. One of the things I discovered while going about and trying out some of the a7 series in store, was that the a7rii compared to the a7 has a better grip (a7iii has continued that too which is good). I still shoot on my a65 from 2012 and I love the solid grip that it provides, and it is not something I would want to sacrifice in upgrading to a mirrorless camera (for the price at least).
Don't be 'sorry'...that's too stereotypical for a Canuck. It's not your fault that our friends down south feel that they are the center of the world and automatically assume that everything on the inter-webs is in miles, lbs, Fahrenheit and USD. ;)
5d mark 4 or A7III? In terms of sharpness it is evident that Sony is ahead with this model but what do you think about colour science if you compare it with 5d mark 4
Thanks Ibaadof. I will let the community answer this - or perhaps ask the Google this question. I haven't had an opportunity to use it with strobes. Though, I can't see what it won't work as well as any other new camera.
Hi there, does the flippy Screen still look very reflective when you use it under sunny day? does the start up time shorter when you turn on and off the device?
Thank You Hussain! When you're a RUclipsr you have to have a thick skin and be ok with the open criticism. I super appreciate the nice comments when I get them. Thank you again!
Very useful video. Please could you tell me the h264 settings for RUclips? I had some problem with a sweatshirt like yours with same color, a lot of video noise on shadows. Thanks
No idea. Probably around 18mbps (guess). Me talking to camera was shot on my GH4 with a very dodgy Russian lens from the 1960s. Why? Because it doesn't matter.
Hi everybody ! @Vistek, your low light footages looks really clean and sharp. I tested an A7R II and even in Super35mm my footages always have some grain (even at 200 high iso) and doesn't look sharp enought for me. Did you apply a denoizer on your video? If yes, how did you do it ? =) Have a nice day ! NB: Pleaze don't judge my english
The reason video is limited is because it is a fotocam and not a video cam. It is an legal/customs issue. And also any other slr or dslr fotocam is limited to 30min. (stock there are ways to unlock that cap).
The best one you can afford? I wouldn't put too much thought in it. A compact zoom would probably be a great start. Get something wide for landscapes and into the medium range. So 24-70 is always a classic focal length. Good luck!
thanks for this awesome overview. I've been debating upgrading to the A7iii, and this video just sealed the deal! can't wait to play with all the awesome features now. :)
Fighting so hard with this decision, but still leaning towards the A9 because I shoot wildlife mostly. It seems the buffer and fast fps will be a huge factor with the power of the stacked sensor. BUT the feature set of this A7III for the price point is ridiculously fantastic. I played with both the A7III and A9 at a local camera store. The no blackout feature of the A9 along with the crazy fast fps provided a different shooting experience. Honestly though, both are fantastic cameras.
keeblerhunts Focus system in the a9 polls the sensor 60 times per second. The a7iii 20 times per second. If you’re tracking fast action, the focus systems are Not the same. They just have the same focus Sensors and processor.
A73 and then use the money saved toward buying a used or new A7R2 (a very capable camera) when you need the 42MP. I have A7R2 and A6500 (for crop reach) and plan to add the A73 soon.
The reason it's limited to 30min has to do with classification and export/ import taxes I believe. If it records longer it's not considered a stills camera in some parts of the world and gets taxed higher as far as I know.
@@vistek appreciate the response im wondering specifically about something like this: www.adata.com/en/feature/441 with the higher read write, or you know a low power NVMe usb 3.1 gen 2 in an enclosure with the 3.1 gen 2 chip. On spec here: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1577838-REG/sony_ilce7sm3_b_alpha_a7s_iii_mirrorless.html/specs VS. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1369441-REG/sony_ilce7rm2_b_alpha_a7r_iii_mirrorless.html/specs you can see the s2iii can record better settings for 'external recording modes'. which would just be down to the 3.2 gen1 usb-c it boasts.. vs. the Riii's usb 3.0 usb-c... but maybe that is only via the pc connect option as some kind of soft or compatible firmware is needed on the other end. id love to be able to just record to SSD, but still haven't seen anyone say it is possible yet... but it almost looks likely due to tethering firmware.
"It is just as good if not better at low light," (referring to a7sii vs. a7iii) as stated at 0:41 of the video. That's false information about iso low light capability of a7iii vs. a7sii. Check Max Yuryev's recent video on the comparison of Sony a7iii vs a7sii iso low light test: ruclips.net/video/9YIMkJbxrGU/видео.html You will find that Sony a7iii is only good if you have good lighting, but when it is very low light scene (like filming horror short films), a7sii is still king of low light for video.
Experiences may vary. I also said that the low light is remarkable, when you consider the price point, and the ISO level at which people may be comfortable using. I've used the A7Sii (and first gen) more than I care to - and not just for the web, but for broadcast. I shoot in both Slog3, Slog2, and in hypergammas. When I consider my personal experiences, and the level at which I'm comfortable boosting ISO - I feel honest in saying that I think the A7iii gives the A7Sii a run for its money. Especially when you consider its price. Whether one camera performs better in a controlled lab test is completely irrelevant to me.
I think when someone is using it for short films in low lit environment it is very important. For example, filming horror short films, a7sii is the ideal camera. The new a7iii and a7riii (which I owned and tested on) use a denoise internal software to hide it low noise capability; when you film in a really low light environment Sony a7sii beats a7iii and a7riii by far. You will see a waxy video images in a7iii after iso 6400. Under normal lighting most people won't know the difference but who buys these cameras? Most are aspiring filmmakers or photographers. They need information that will benefit them. I suggest perhaps you do an episode on shooting horror film with a7sii vs a7iii and perhaps a7siii if it becomes available. This would benefit all of us. Thanks.
Oh gosh that joystick is one of the most lovely features in the 3rd generation. Changing focus points in the older generations is such a pain. It's true you can quickly change AF points on touch screen in the 3rd generation, but when my eye is pressed against the viewfinder, I don't want my thumb to constantly rub my nose!
Hi Drew, our Sony rep dropped it off for me to try for two days after the camera was announced. People like Jason Lanier are Sony artisans and get to test these products well ahead of launch.
Maybe this is my next camera after the 5D III. But it looks like 7 III is not so reliable/ workhorse camera. We will see... 7 III plus Sigma primes would be a dope combo.
the limited record time is down to taxes, if it can record longer than 29.59 it has to be a video camera and will be a higher rate of tax, the gh5 is so expensive partly due to that. when the gh4 was around they had a normal gh4 and then released a gh4 r which could record for as long as you liked but it was £300-£400 more expensive
What a great review for the Sony a7III. The best improvement is the focus point toggle. The wheel changed settings if you hit it wrong causing some very important missed shots. Alas, I will not be getting this camera because of the "not" improved lcd screen. My Nikon has the same type (fold up or down). My Oly has the very versatile swing out lcd which I find so handy when shooting in portrait mode. And as far as the touch screen goes, I never use it. I prefer my more accurate dials.
Great review. I am now a subscriber. Can you recommend an excellent all around lens for a casual (not even prosumer) user that is less than $1,000? Would prefer to have some zoom capability but also don’t want to compromise sharpness. Thanks.
Hi Jake - thank you for subscribing and the great comment. I might leave it to community to answer your question, but a 24-105 ( i think that's the range) f4 is a good all arounder when you consider how good the low light on the camera is (so you can afford the 1 stop loss over the 2.8 lenses). I'm not sure the price though.
Hello Valters. Thanks for the comment. I can tell you I had the camera for 48 hours and no more - where as many other vloggers had it for up to 3 weeks. Sony never asked that I tailor my review. No camera manufacturer in recent memory has asked me to "say something nice." What you are getting is my honest opinion after 48 hours with the camera.
I think calling the A7 iii a basic model is misleading I researched what lenses would make sense to use with the A7 iii and you can easily double the USD 1'998 you spend on the camera with money you will spend on lenses.
Bike X The World You will always spend more on glass than you will on the body, for any camera. The difference here is that people can more readily get into full frame shooting now with a camera that gives you everything the APS-C cameras gave you, but in full frame for a cheap price.
*Says joystick is useless & redundant

MBearr1221 I lol’d at this😂
Sony fanboy spotted
Haha good point the camera cool dude look wearing a beanie to bed
so what was the feature that (almost) no one is talking about?
Hey Philip, honest question. I felt as though every review talked extensively about the ISO and Focus (which I admittingly also talked about, because how could you not), but didn't talk at all about design, or about the things that still weren't great. Yes, the design is identical to that of the A7R3, but if that camera didn't interest the viewer, then this would be their first experience with the re-design. hahahahahahahhahaha Oh man I laughed so hard with this comment!!!
? You don't need a joystick? I didn't move to sony until they added it. The old method of moving the focus point was awful for fast events...
I've never needed one, but that's just me. Not everyone shoots like me.
lolololol
A7 III has touch screen focus now, why use the joystick?
Joystick is really not a must. 1 good center focus point is just work fine even for 95% of time with some focusing skill.
Touchscreen will replace joystick
Camera can be great,.... but the lenses price.... seriously.... prohibitive!
Yes EU bureaucrats are morons!
Opinions?
Great points Sea Panther. Thanks for the comment.
Previous jog wheel/stick didn’t move the focus around unless you mapped a key to press first, then move the point, then set it...was a pain when changing it often and if you accidentally clicked one of he sides then there you go changing iso it one of the other functions...I’ve had lots of find with this lol
Sea Panther
"Sony is great at listening at their customers"?
Really?Took them years to implement a semifunctional touch screen! Only on a few cameras of course!
How about articulating screen?
Nope!
Functional menu?
Nope!
Lenses much?
Nope!
That's Sony...
I can agree on most of those points but will disagree on the lenses, Sony has introduced a ton of lenses in the last three years
Sea Panther well, I kinda agree with everyone here.
Darlington Football Club Which is one of the reasons why Brits voted out.
Well that would be fantastic. Especially if they lifted the limit with a firmware update.
Yup - exactly right. Here is the FujiRumors article about it: www.fujirumors.com/yes-eu-import-duty-reason-fujifilm-x-h1-limited-30-minutes-will-change-2018-2019/
EU is the kindom of tax !
Pretty sure that is also a rule in the US, and I don't know how much the tax is, but I'm not sure if I would want to pay significantly more for this camera so that it could record more than 30 minutes of video if I meant to use it for, you know, taking pictures, which used to be the primary purpose of all cameras but these days who knows.
that hand grip part had me on the edge of my seat was just to hard to watch lol
My goal is to keep people on the edge of their seat. :)
I have carried both my a7s and my a6000 like that from day 1. I have big hands too and the fingers just sit perfectly on the hand grip, never dropped one YET !!!!!
Did you watch the last 5 seconds? Unnecessary anxiety inducing end to the video!
I was going to buy one of these a7 iii but I heard some people having trouble with the shutters not working after being used for a while so I’m stuck what to buy as lots of cameras I have read up on have had problems with them
But why on earth my Sony has lots of noise in the black?? Is it some setting squeezing I should do? Please please help me!
I’m still glad I got the A7Riii (got the A7Rii 2 years ago). I’m used to 42mp and couldn’t ever go back to 24. I plan to be happy with it for a few year ahead. I loved the A7Rii, but this is a nice improvement.
but is it really better in lowlight than the a7s ii? There seems to be a lot of in camera noise reduction compared to a7s ii...
Thank you so much Dale, Helpful and informative review! God bless and good luck!
Glad it was helpful!
could you do a comparison between the a7iii and Canon's 1DXii and explain what the extra $3700 for the 1DX buys you?
reason for 30 minutes is to pay less tax its classed as a stills camera
u can thank the EU for that ;)
Then why didn’t they provide for the possibility of removing this restriction using firmware, such as in the a6400?
I am researching out the Sony a7III and felt you did a good job of your review. Thanks, it really helped.
Thank you Mario! I really appreciate the kind words.
Is that lens there the kit lens that comes with the camera?
Which Vistek is this filmed out of? Calgary?
For slo mo frame rates on Sony cameras, setup the 1&2 on the dial. Works great for me, it's a turn of the dial to get to my custom settings.
I do something very similar on the GH4/5. Works great. Thanks for you comment Lex!
What do you mean at 8:25 when describing the issue with 120fps? Didn't quite understand that.
@@vistek Didn't expect a reply, thanks for the clarification!
A7iii or a7iii? Without thinking about the price? And what would be the first lens I should buy with either of them?
One question, when shooting in SLog is the ISO still only 800 and above? Are we stuck with ND filters and silly high shutter speeds?
Awesome review
I'm going to buy this camera
u say movie button on front? what were you on?
I have the a9 and to be honest I'm happy with the touch screen as is. On my product shooting camera it has full touch and I accidentally change camera setting all the time and it isn't awesome. Even when the camera is in my bag, if it gets bumped and wakes up then the bag starts changing the camera setting as I'm walking or running around. Know what I mean? So I'm totally cool with the lack of touch options on my s9
Oh, I know, I know-- it is a thin camera strap, which can double as a hoodie tie (or did someone else already say that?)
The 30 min record limitation is due to taxation in some countries and is based around the class of equipment being a photographic camera vs a dedicated camcorder which is my understanding at least, so on a global scale it helps that this is so the equipment is the same through the global comunity.
Where is everyone getting these cameras ahead of release? It's not just the big review sites, it's TONS of RUclipsrs...
Looking for a Sony Alpha full frame. I shoot video, stills, and astro. All in equal parts. Must I choose? Thanks.
Could Sony not do a firmware download where it takes the 29 min 59 sec limit off.
Michael, you're a good man. Thank you!!!
Takes one to know one :)
does anyone know much about the technical durability of mirrorless cameras like the a7iii with respect to heavy usage and take many thousands of individual photos in a single day? I often need to shoot tens of thousands of photos in a day.... i get by with it rotating 2 DSLRs and know i can replace my shutter every 200,000 or so.... but how would mirrorless cameras like the a7iii deal with this?
(taking less photos not an option btw haha).
Can I do surfing shots with this camera???? Please help me out
what makes micro hdmi inferior?
Please sign my Change.org petition.
is it possible to hack 30 min limitation with firmware update?
So can I ask the q.? What was this promotion shot with?
thanks 4 d video .......can i use flash on a7iii in electronic silent shutter mode.....tnks
Hi,
Thanks for the great video i just have a question, the a6500 1080 video looked rubbish i want to know how the a7iii compares for 1080p quality to something like a7sii is it any good?
Thanks
Was the 120fps clip with aliasing shot at the full frame setting or the super 35 crop setting? In another video I’ve seen by Max Yuryev the full frame image had less aliasing than the super 35 crop mode.
Great video and very useful for those of us who are about to buy a Sony a7 III.
Semi quote "You aren't going to use the 100,000 ISO unless you are trying to catch the guy who is stealing your carrots in the middle of the night." LOL
Does the A7iii have an optical low pass filter?
The A7III is $2000, not $2600.
Canadian dollars. We're in Canada. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
That makes more sense then. =)
Don't be 'sorry'...that's too stereotypical for a Canuck. It's not your fault that our friends down south feel that they are the center of the world and automatically assume that everything on the inter-webs is in miles, lbs, Fahrenheit and USD. ;)
It's $3000 in AUD :(
Read the description
How about if you put those additional upright Battery will it prolong the recording video?
5d mark 4 or A7III?
In terms of sharpness it is evident that Sony is ahead with this model but what do you think about colour science if you compare it with 5d mark 4
How many minutes of 4K video will fit on a 32gb card with the Sony A7 iii ?
I created a custom button on my a6500 for the Record Start and Stop on the rear of the camera. I didn't like the corner button either.
Thanks for the review. Do you recommend sony a7III for fashion and editorial shoots? Syncing it with strobes and flashes ?
Thanks Ibaadof. I will let the community answer this - or perhaps ask the Google this question. I haven't had an opportunity to use it with strobes. Though, I can't see what it won't work as well as any other new camera.
What iso does the human eye see?
what camera are you shooting yourself with?
Hi there, does the flippy Screen still look very reflective when you use it under sunny day? does the start up time shorter when you turn on and off the device?
Yes - but they all do. I haven't found one that doesn't. Start up seemed pretty quick, if not nearly instant.
Maybe I'm skipped that part, but what about overheating during video recording?
Hi Hanselbeck. I didn't talk about overheating because I discovered no issues with it.
Great review ! don't let anyone put you down !
this was very informative for me (trying to decide between A7R3 and A73)
Thank you !
Thank You Hussain! When you're a RUclipsr you have to have a thick skin and be ok with the open criticism. I super appreciate the nice comments when I get them. Thank you again!
Hussain BH hey what did you end up choosing? I’m trying to decide between them as well. (Wildlife and astrophotography)
@@BrokeSpaceLaser Definitely A7iii and maybe get an APS-C body (a6400) for wild life.
Saad Azzahrani You dont need apsc if You hsve this full frame with crop option in this model, You have two in one and silent mode to wildlife as well.
Why? Because it doesn't matter.
thank you. sorry, what doesn't matter?
hi guys, a sony A7 III, will work when connected to powerbank ?
Hi everybody ! @Vistek, your low light footages looks really clean and sharp. I tested an A7R II and even in Super35mm my footages always have some grain (even at 200 high iso) and doesn't look sharp enought for me. Did you apply a denoizer on your video? If yes, how did you do it ? =)
Have a nice day !
NB: Pleaze don't judge my english
Hi Storai, no denoiser was used. What picture profile are you shooting in?
The reason video is limited is because it is a fotocam and not a video cam. It is an legal/customs issue. And also any other slr or dslr fotocam is limited to 30min. (stock there are ways to unlock that cap).
What lens do you recommend for a trip to Japan with the A7III?
The best one you can afford? I wouldn't put too much thought in it. A compact zoom would probably be a great start. Get something wide for landscapes and into the medium range. So 24-70 is always a classic focal length. Good luck!
thanks for this awesome overview. I've been debating upgrading to the A7iii, and this video just sealed the deal! can't wait to play with all the awesome features now. :)
Thanks Huong!
The 30min video recording time I think has some issue to do with tax. As Nikon i believe also have a 29min limit.
Nice video thanks. By the way what’s the beanie?
you can link to an external monitor with a usb-C to HDMI cable yah? Or does the USB-C not have a video out option?
Hello Greg, I don't think so. I think USB is just for tethering.
A73 vs A7R3? autofocus versus megapixels? Have any of you tried both cameras and compared them?
A73 and then use the money saved toward buying a used or new A7R2 (a very capable camera) when you need the 42MP. I have A7R2 and A6500 (for crop reach) and plan to add the A73 soon.
I’m mostly interested in video, and am deciding between the gh5 and this a7 iii, any advice on which way to go?
Cheap Traveling Trev. For Video GH5 Is Good With 4K At 60 And 30 Fps. And Have 10bit Rate.
The reason it's limited to 30min has to do with classification and export/ import taxes I believe. If it records longer it's not considered a stills camera in some parts of the world and gets taxed higher as far as I know.
I'm definitely going to get this... im just worried about mirrorless... im clumsy :(
hey do you know if you can film right to a HDD on it?
Hi Zee, you can use an external recorder like an Atomos.
@@vistek appreciate the response im wondering specifically about something like this: www.adata.com/en/feature/441 with the higher read write, or you know a low power NVMe usb 3.1 gen 2 in an enclosure with the 3.1 gen 2 chip. On spec here:
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1577838-REG/sony_ilce7sm3_b_alpha_a7s_iii_mirrorless.html/specs
VS.
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1369441-REG/sony_ilce7rm2_b_alpha_a7r_iii_mirrorless.html/specs
you can see the s2iii can record better settings for 'external recording modes'. which would just be down to the 3.2 gen1 usb-c it boasts.. vs. the Riii's usb 3.0 usb-c...
but maybe that is only via the pc connect option as some kind of soft or compatible firmware is needed on the other end. id love to be able to just record to SSD, but still haven't seen anyone say it is possible yet... but it almost looks likely due to tethering firmware.
Is it cold inside your place?
The a7sii will do slightly better low light tho?
Yes, at higher ISOs, say above 3200 or 6400.
Is the a7iii 1080p 120fps quality better than the 1dx ii?
"It is just as good if not better at low light," (referring to a7sii vs. a7iii) as stated at 0:41 of the video.
That's false information about iso low light capability of a7iii vs. a7sii. Check Max Yuryev's recent video on the comparison of Sony a7iii vs a7sii iso low light test: ruclips.net/video/9YIMkJbxrGU/видео.html
You will find that Sony a7iii is only good if you have good lighting, but when it is very low light scene (like filming horror short films), a7sii is still king of low light for video.
Thanks.
So if you are not shooting horror films? It's good?
"Whether one camera performs better in a controlled lab test is completely irrelevant to me."
Whereas gut feeling is a far more useful gauge?
Is there a crop with 4k?
Hi Rasmokey4, there is not! Full frame!
Will you guys have a demo unit in store before april 11th? Would love to come in and check one out to see if I'm going to "upgrade" from my A7SII.
Hi James. Sony couldn't confirm that with me, but they did say that it is currently in our Mississauga store until EOD tomorrow (March 17th).
i thought this dude was gonna start rhyming in the beginning.
How did you (and some other people) get the camera before it’s out??
Hi Drew, our Sony rep dropped it off for me to try for two days after the camera was announced. People like Jason Lanier are Sony artisans and get to test these products well ahead of launch.
Maybe this is my next camera after the 5D III. But it looks like 7 III is not so reliable/ workhorse camera. We will see... 7 III plus Sigma primes would be a dope combo.
Which lense is that?
the limited record time is down to taxes, if it can record longer than 29.59 it has to be a video camera and will be a higher rate of tax, the gh5 is so expensive partly due to that. when the gh4 was around they had a normal gh4 and then released a gh4 r which could record for as long as you liked but it was £300-£400 more expensive
Great Vid! What's the over/under that you got the Lanier flip on the first try? hahaha
I'm 100%. I've been flipping cameras and lenses for years and I haven't dropped one. Yet....
Thank you Tloopfan!
I wish Sony and every other camera manufacturer would just add an articulating flip screen like the GH5. They're so versatile.
what lense is that??
Yes S&Q sounds like a great feature BUT :) it is only 1080 and the slow motion is with bad compression...
Yes the 120p compression has been an issue with their cameras all the way up to the FS5. Good point.
is a7iii or a7r2 which one is good ??
How u get the camera before release? Oh for positive review
Yeah, bodies are 'consumables'. Lenses are forever.
Calling a $2000 model is just silly. It's the basic A7 model but it's not a basic camera. It's like Hasselblad calling the H6D their basic model.
John Campbell unless you switch from Nikon and cannon to Sony, like I did!
