I bought the A7RV for the screen, EVF, and better stabilization. Having great AF is just an added benefit. For what it offers, it’s an incredible value. Zero regrets!! I will never buy another camera without a 4-way screen - it’s simply amazing to use and makes you want to go out and shoot.

i went from an A200 after 10 years of usage to an A77M2, and I was astounded. 9 years later I'm still amazed. The A7R5 is the next step, and I would be happy enough with the A6700 if it weren't for the lack of buttons, the bad screens resolution and the bad 1/8000 FES rolling shutter.

I love sony and love using their cameras, but their lack of firmware updates to provide new features within their cameras is annoying. They literally could update most of their new cameras to have updated features but it feels like they simply choose to not do it... it's the Apple effect sadly 🙃

Agreed. I don't own a Sony, but we also need to also take in account the processor. The logic built into it is designed to work with the current hardware. I'm not sure that throwing a software update to previous hardware would work well or perform exactly the same.

Sort of, but not really... Apple still provides updates all the way back to the iPhone SE & 8 (based in iOS 16). I agree on the lack of firmware. That being said, Sony could take a page from Apple on updates (or Tesla for that matter).

I upgraded to an a7rv from an a7iii. Absolutely worth the upgrade. Feels better in the hand, love the flexibility of view from the screen, the EVF, the custom buttons and focus, the lot! I did worry files would be too big, but that 60mp sensor is my favourite feature of all. I use 20, 35, 55 and 85 primes (plus 70~200 f4) and the abilty to crop the sensor gives makes them all zooms. 4:28 no I don't think they can do anything about it because they built in an extra chip into the A7RV for the improved AI autofocus. The A1 does not have that extra chip so it isn't possible with an update.

Let's build some Alexa tech into our cameras so all we have to do is say "switch to spot focus" (as one example of dozens). The menus are so deep now and this would help so much with workflow!

4:34 Autofocus update for A1. This depends on the build in hardware of the A1. AFAIK A7R5 has a new AI chip dedicated for autofocus functionality. Eg. A7III never received the realtime tracking autofocus, simply because it doesn't have the hardware to handle it.

I thought you were going to rant on the A7RV, but as I watched the video I understood your frustration. If I had an A1 I would be upset there hasn't been a firmware update especially given the price. I picked up the A7rV and have been very pleased with it thus far. So far it feels like the first Sony camera that doesn't feel compromised (I'm not an avid video shooter) so that may be why for me. I also am pleased to have the lower resolutions as well. There are many times I don't need or want the large 61 meg files, and having 26 is plenty for less critical imaging but still plenty to make great prints.

I agree Pierre. I have the A1 I was not going to order the A7V until I played around with one and the autofocus blew me away. So I ordered the A7V and in a way kind of feel ripped off that the A1 doesn't have this technology. I think they should do everything they can in a firmware upgrade but with the extra processor for the AI on the A7V, I don't know if they can. One thing I do like about the A1 better is the stacked sensor which lets me shoot and silent mode without worrying about distortion. The other day I was doing some street photography with the A7V in electronic shutter for silence and I got a lot of distortion with fast-moving subjects. So I guess the A1-2 is going to be the perfect camera where they'll try to suck 8K out of us! 😁

This is just my opinion about my own work: I don't consider nailing focus or exposure to be the primary challenges in photography. Instead, I find the primary challenges to be composition, subject selection, lighting, perspective, etc., and these are things that I don't think technology can really do for you.
Focus and exposure are the mechanics of what a photographer does, but I don't see a lot of people saying things like, "Wow! That exposure is terrific!" or "That shot is so well focused!" Focus and exposure are pre-requisites and it's important to do them both properly, but I don't think it is generally part of the "art form" (with some obvious exceptions, of course, as you can intentionally use both to create specific outcomes).
For me, if I can get those mechanical pre-requisites out of my way so I can concentrate more on what a photographer ACTUALLY does, that's a win.
TL;DR - Does the A7RV make photography too easy? For me, no...because I still have to choose the shot and tell the story. Sony can't do that for me.

The A1 doesn't have a dedicated chip/processor for auto focus. That's why it doesn't have the same capability of the 7RV. There are things they can add, but let's face it -- SONY is in the business of making MONEY. I have a feeling that all cameras that have been out there for a while will never see some of these updates (focus breathing, focus mapping, additional audio focus modes, etc.) not because they can't put them in there, but because they're waiting to include those features in NEW models coming out. Why would they constantly give existing customers all the latest and greatest updates (that firmware will support) for FREE when they can make people wait and then pay another $4,000 for a newer camera WITH those updates (and new features)? I'm waiting for a camera company to realize that they could sell these upgrades via PAID firmware updates, or maybe one day they'll attempt a "subscription" model for new features via firmware (bug fixes would still be free, hopefully). I shrug at the thought of subscriptions (I hate them, and avoid them)... but PAYING for added features via firmware update would be better than holding out for a whole new camera body every 4 years. Pay-for-updates might attract more consumer/prosumer adopters, while a new camera body every 4 years is more reserved for your professional class shooters.

It would be cool if Sony used camera user eye tracking to tell where you're looking in the viewfinder to pick the focus subject. Then expand that to a bluetooth range of sunglasses/eyeglasses that could pair to the camera and then have the option for an overlay and the ability to track where your eye is looking at and pick focus from that.

Not really needed as much with the AI AF in time as it will improve. The eye tracking AF like Canon is less reliable as friends have the camera and say it doesn’t work all the time.

You can change the exif data en masse with exif tool and it takes a few seconds to do hundreds of files. It's literally a non issue - just keep the command with an asterisk instead of the file name in a text doc, copy it when needed and execute in the folder you want to change: r. click on folder - open in terminal - paste - enter... wait 10 seconds and done.
And the AF from RV isn't in A1 because it uses hardware that the A1 doesn't have. Would you prefer if they keep new tech just for the flagship release? Then the A1 still wouldn't have it, but the RV would also be a worse camera. Nobody wins...

The A7R5 seems tecnically amazing i just wish it had no rolling shutter when using silent electronic shnutter like the over priced A1. As far as the AI getting to where it knows where to focus. Canon already has a feature where the focusing will go to where your eye is looking when looking through the view finder. And Sony needs to copy that feature. As someone who has used an A7r lll for the last five years...i kept hearing about Sonys new ergernomics. So I went to a store to hold an A7r5 just to see how it felt in my hand ergernomicly. Expecting. To love it. But the first thing i noticed instantly is how much heavier it felt compared to my R3..it was a very noticable difference. and even though the grip is bigger. I didnt like the way it Felt in my hand. So i was disapointed. I fellt like there was even less room between my fingers on the grip and the lens. So the camera is bigger and heavier but still doesnt feel comfortable in the hand. But i loved the adjustable screen.

The AI focus already exists in the iPhone with prores/Raw images. The iPhone saves them as .dng and produces a "focusmap" on the picture of the subject, even including the objects they interact with. Ty Cheng has a great video about it. :)

Instead of complaining that a new camera is doing some things better than a much more expensive 2 year old camera, you should be like: "Wow it's amazing that we can spend less money and get more things, that's like anti-cripple hammer!". It also means that the A1 II will also have this AI chip, an 8 step IBIS, the 4-way articulated screen etc.

  • @thegeneral123

A1 does not have the computational power of the A7RV so no, it's not going to be possible to update it via firmware as it's a hardware limit. I do agree though that Sony are jipping camera owners with the lack of firmware and quality of life improvements. They're the top and know it. Arrogant company. At the very least the A1 and A7SIII should get the A7IV features.
